do I get this or a MiBox or similar Android TV boxes?

    • This gives you ability to run Windows or Linux OS's. I like using OpenElec which is a Linux based Kodi install.

      • +3

        Should switch to LibreElec ;)

        • Yep, OpenElec is pretty much dead now. There is only one developer working on it at the moment apparently :(

        • @dealspider: The latest Krypton based kodi works pretty well on my old NUC N2820 and with MQ7 skin and animated posters

    • Do you want Android or Windows/Linux? Answer that, then everything else falls in to place.

    • +3

do I get this or a MiBox or similar Android TV boxes?

      Chalk, cheese and oranges.

If you just want Kodi, get a $50 'android' box and install LibreElec.

If you want proprietary streaming: netflix & Youtube, get the Mi Box.

If you want a general-purpose HTPC/server with a full OS to play around with and don't mind spending a few times as much, get this.

If you have a 4K TV, be careful as this does not have HDMI-2. Will all 4K TVs work at 30Hz UHD with this?

      • I found that some cheap devices struggle with some formats, HEVC, Bluray ISO, TrueHD/DTS HDMA etc

    • Pretty well as @paintoad says - all depends on the platform you prefer.
This'd be my own preference, but mibox is a lot cheaper if you're constrained by $$$.

    • Mi Box 3 can act as a chromecast also

  • NTEL?

    • Opps updated my bad copy and pasting

  • +1

i had this model just to play with mostly. It is incredibly quiet and quick with the ssd. however as soon as you start to want to run flash, browse several tabs at the same time, it soon gets puffed out. it was fine as a network thingy to attach storage and printers. I never tried xmbc because i dont like it and dont watch many shows.

opening the box i couldnt believe the size of it…

    • as you start to want to run flash,

      A highly unlikely event!

browse several tabs at the same time

Sounds like a RAM limit. Were you running Windows? Less than 4GB?

      • -1

Not really, the more tabs you run the more CPU it needs, and the CPU sucks in this NUC.

        • Really? My N36L w/8GB of ram in win10 handles browsing/youtube playback fine @ 1080p….and that CPU is worse then the N3050…

Bought one anyway, will see how we go. Needed someone that can play 1080p HEVC with hardware accel because the N36L can't do it…

        • @ironpaw:
I thought the Kaby lake Nuc's had the HEVC support in hardware.

        • @gummibear:

          Braswells can do it too:

          http://nucblog.net/2015/07/braswell-nuc-review-nuc5cpyh-htpc…

Article was written in 2015…new drivers/updated versions of OpenELEC/Kodi is out which supports HEVC hardware decoding on Braswell.

      • I had 8gb ram and windows 10. I may have tried win7 but my own memory is pretty limited.

No idea if it is ram limited or not. Its probably not comparable but my old M11xr3 with 4gb ram has no problems browsing the same websites.

Super weird that the only Ubiquiti APs that fall under the promo code are priced at 25% more than everyone else.

    • Be wary of some of the sellers. They may be selling the OEM pack, or the pack without the PoE power adapter.

    What colour is it?

Oops, found it in the middle… thanks.

    • What's the Product Codename?

      • +3

I'm going to need the weight in ounces and a full list of IEEE certification.

        • Im going to need all the fcc id of each component.

  • Any good dealios on something a little more powerful?

I like to have loads of tabs open at once.

Or would slapping 8gb of ram in fix this?

    • -1

Add more ram will not make it more 'powerful…'

    • This box is super slow.

      • +1

Its a celeron not an i7, not sure what you expecting in performance?

        • +1

Not sure he was expecting anything different?

        • There are different types of celerons.
The G39XXs are actually pretty decent and much faster than the airmont based celerons like this one.
There are also some pretty dodgy airmont pentiums on top of the actually great i3 tier pentiums.
Marketing names really dont mean much for performance in intel's lineup.

  • +2

I purchased this last time it was on special. Novelty wore off when I realised just how slow this box is. At the moment mine just monitors network traffic where it logs ping times to different servers.

    • +1

Slow? What were you planning on using it for?
It is more than capable of HTPC, SOHO server, and light web use.

It benchmarks like a core2 from 10 years ago, but with far better GPU.
I hope you did not try to use it for Windows desktop.

  • What would be the best way to use this for Kodi, Netflix and possibly another streaming app?

  • There is a brand new "high end"Celeron with 4 cores, surprisingly. It's meant to be a very good htpc nuc. Under $250 too

    • NUC are mobile CPU so won't be 4 cores same as laptops

      • Sure true.
I'm hearing the Celeron tho with x265 decode is pretty decent, if your player uses H/W accel

        • I have no issues with my old NUC n2820 celeron model

  • Umm - i need to put memory into this don't i?
And then attach some kind of hard disk, or is that where an SD card can come in?

Trying to work out how much i have to spend to advance this to a mini-crap-PC.

Also, if i install Win7 or Win10, will this thing handle one or more USB TV tuner cards?
There's a possible PVR if it can.

    I obviously have no idea…

    • +1

      I obviously have no idea…

Its almost certainly a case of "if you don't already know, this is not the PC for you.".
It is a bit of a niche product.

If you want Windows, how about a small-form-factor ex-lease Optiplex etc PC from eBay?
You'll have a far more powerful CPU, more flexibility, and Windows included.
But still small-ish and very quiet.

      • Yes but other kids at my school have one so i want one.

Have been looking at things like this, but they're a little expensive for me. Even looked at old tech like this, but that's not really cheap to run and will probably die on me soon anyway.

Just want something small, low power, that i can leave on all day and fiddle with to record TV, and maybe do other things given it'll have Windows on it.

This might do it i think, maybe for just one USB TV Tuner card.

The list of add-ons in this link seems to tell me what i need, so it'll cost me a little to get something like this running…

    • +1

You don't need windows to record tv. Openelec and librelec will do the job. HD homerun or USB tv. You need ram and hdd.

      • Actually i've got a few gadgets that might be able to record TV.

For example i've got an Acer Iconia W4-820 from this deal ages ago, but i've never actually used it in anger.
It's got a Z3740, an SSD, but only 2G RAM and running Win8.1.
The benchmarking for it isn't that much off the N3050.

        What do you think?
        Is it worth a go?
Maybe if i jack the RAM?

In a week or two i'll have an all-HDMI switch with KVM set up for all the various gadgets i have - PC (1), laptops (2), tablets (2) etc. That is soon i'll be set up for actually dealing with these smaller items that are usually a hassle to engage with properly (which is part of the reason i haven't).
