  • buy an OS????

Good price with 20% off, very ordinary price without it.

Take note that this is the first NUC generation with HDMI 2.0. This makes it a perfect HTPC if you have a 4K TV as it will display a native 4K image at 60Hz. It also has native support for HEVC.

my laptop has a 7th gen i7 U model. It does hardware decoding of 10bit HEVC fine but not 8bit. 8bit decoding causes weird quantization issues. If all you want is a htpc id recommend spending as little as $35 for a s905 based android box. ~$400 is a lot to spend when then still haven't ironed out all the kinks.

… when they still haven't ironed out all the kinks.

too right, as per NUC Blog, no HD Audio for Linux, hence, xELEC.

      • I have a 4th gen Intel HTPC running full HD and it plays everything perfectly.

Anyway I agree an Andriod box is better but only if the only thing you want to do is play videos and maybe KODI. Otherwise a Windows machine can do everything, add a wireless keyboard and mouse and you can do everything from your lounge.

      • what android box compares to this?

        • ODroid C2? Supports 4k, H.265, gigabit LAN, runs Linux including OpenPHT (Plex) and LibreELEC (Kodi). Also supports eMMC storage in addition to microSD. So as a HTPC fairly comparable, although obviously some serious pro/cons going both ways.

        • @rhangman: alot of android boxes have sync issues I noticed from reading a few reviews

Am I the only one who don't know what a NUC is !!!!!

What are these for ? Can it be used as a desktop PC ? or ???

    • +3

a nuc is a desktop PC, (it uses laptop-level components). Albeit a very small one, uses very little power. It is VESA mountable, meaning you can attach it to the back of a monitor.

It is not meant to be powerful — it's not the point of the NUC, it's meant to have a small footprint.

It's basically a very small computer, about 10cm square and 6cm tall. You plug it into a desktop monitor once you've added the bits, install your OS and you've got essentially a very small desktop, yes.

Bear in mind these have Ultrabook processors in them so they're not going to be for high end gaming but basic home and office use (although there is a fancy NUC that claims to be gaming compatible, albeit with Iris Pro graphics…)

Laptop without screen and keyboard. :)

      • yeah we have i5 as replacements for older desktops …… same performance as laptop but don't need the dock or foot footprint .space .. no complaints from users.

wireless keyboard and a tv as a monitor and it makes a reasonable tv box and pc in one for people with no space for a pc …. eg apartments with no study for a permanent desk.

  • Remember that you have to add:

    1. RAM
    2. SSD/HDD
    3. OS

I had a laptop, it decided to change itself to nuc when the keyboard and screen stopped working. I decided to give it a new lease of life by connecting a wireless keyboard/mouse and connected it to my TV. It works now as a htpc.
