If your looking at the Siemens get it from UK http://hip-ip.co.uk/ they include answering machines in their version, and also have color displays. I got the S685IP version and it sync's my mobile's address book via bluetooth.

I dont understand why australian companies can't supply these and have to give us cheap cut down versions.

    • Maybe because they dont have permit to work in Australia or arnt designed for this market

    • The quick reason is that there are regulations in Australia governing what can be connected to telecommunications networks, and unless a device has been certified (C and A ticked), it cannot be legally sold in Australia or connected to any telecommunications network.

      • Does your router have an A tick? Or your Hub? Or how about your computer?

So why does an IP phone, that connects to your hub, then onto your Computer (running Asterisk) and then out via the router need one?

Where does the "telecommunications network" start?

FYI, these phones have an FXO port for direct connection to a standard landline. This is why they definitely require a A tick. Both my Linksys SPA962 and Yealink are A-ticked and they only have ethernet connections (The SPA962 has a telepermit though which is the old version).

I'm not going to argue about this - it had been done to death on whirlpool. I'm not the regulator in this area, the ACMA is - and they define what constitutes a telecommunications network, and which devices require the various certifications.

          See: http://www.acma.gov.au/scripts/nc.dll?WEB/STANDARD/1001/pc=P… for more information.

Why ping a reseller in Australia for complying with the law - what a joke asa79!

As for your question froberts2, all VOIP equipment requires atick:

"A VoIP telephone is subject to the standards listed in Category C33 of the TLN and must be labelled with the A-Tick compliance mark. " if you have a VOIP router the same applies!

          http://www.acma.gov.au/WEB/STANDARD/pc=PC_2948

Why are local phones dearer, because someone has to pay for the certification!

    • sorry, as far as my understanding goes, the device is "illegal" in australia because it hasnt been checked for the c standard. I could be wrong, but thats acma for you
