The last ThinkPad E570p deal went quite well, and I have received any coupon for the base model of this budget-gaming-ThinkPad (these 3 words don't usually come together). Use coupon code NEWE570P to take $130 off the lowest configuration and 50% off Next Business Day warranty (which would be useful if you are buying for business). So here's what you get for $1169:

  • Intel Core i5-7300HQ (4 core, 4 threads, 6634 average Passmark)
  • 15.6" Full HD IPS display
  • 8GB DDR4 RAM
  • 128GB SSD
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 2GB

It has a spare 2.5" drive bay and one extra DDR4 SODIMM slot which can be used for upgrade later. Note that GTX1050ti only has 2GB memory (rather than 4GB on many PCIe cards), so you might not be able to play some games in 1080p ultra settings. Lenovo did recently start selling their Legion Y520 series with 1050Ti 4GB, but heavier, more expensive (from $1499), and not-a-ThinkPad.

3 Year on-site NBD upgrade is an extra $134.75.

Hooray! Quad cores at a decent price!

  • +1

How is this compared to the Dell deal and the E470 - Light gaming (heroes of the storm, csgo etc), programming, multi tasking and looking at horse videos/a current affair? (seriously though)

    • +2

Much better than the E470 at all of those - this has a proper quad core CPU and a 1050 Ti graphics card. The E470 would struggle hard in some games with a 940MX, and suffer lower frames in CSGO due to the dual core CPU.

This is a pretty damn good deal for a quad core laptop and 1050 Ti.

  • It's this full windows? If so, no deal for me! I'm waiting for windows 10 S.

    • are you kidding? you know what the s stands for? too rude to say here

      • +3

        Haha, yeah, just joking.

    • 10 s ….. they will be developing stores for school apps and corporates so you don't need the parasites in the it dept packaging apps and pushing them down via SCCM.

give each school a store in office 365 and they can control tha apps kids can load ….. same for corporates…. rather than developing an soe or have open desktops and kids load crap and even adults ……

think market segements ….. wouldn't use 10 s at home as most apps i want aren't in a store.

apple have done this for years ….. load apps from their store easily ….. out side of store it asks you questions to make sure you know the app might have viruses.

lots of people load apps from play store for this phones …. same model.

  • Wow, great deal

  • Does anyone know if you could hook up two monitors to this thing? I see in the tech specs that it has 1x HDMI and from the picture it looks like it has one port too. But how would one get two monitors to work on it?

    Cheers

    • +1

No it does not work. HDMI is also 1.4 so max out at UHD@30fps. It does have a few USB3 ports which you can then use those USB->HDMI adaptor to connect to more monitors.

      • thanks scotty

      • Does it not have a usbc? That's a shame.

        • -1

it does according to the spec page.
So if you want to output to external monitor you just need to buy a USB-C to DisplayPort cable.

        • @bogak: it doesn't say usb type-c in the tech spec of e570p

        • @CodeXD: Ah shit I must of been looking at the Lenovo one

    • Perhaps also via a dock

  • +1

128GB SSD, so maybe 3 modern games.

    • Nah, more like 1 game. BF1 is about 40gb without any DLC. I've had my new gaming laptop for a week and i am already getting 75% ssd usage popups

    • So true, but external HDD's work a treat. Problem with Steam is if it doesn't detect your game, it removes it from the list, so you wouldn't want to run Steam if you don't have it plugged in. Assuming you are playing Steam games.

  • hope they have the $1 docking offer again.

According to their website, the Lenovo Y520 starts at $1499 which comes with GTX1060M (instead of GTX1050TI) can be configured with 16RAM taking the total to $1649 after using the discount code LENOVO15 takes the system down to $1401.54

    • does the LENOVO15 still work?

    • Y520 comes with 1050ti 4GB, and Y720 comes with GTX1060. The product selection page for Y520 shows GTX1060M which is just wrong.

      • I suspected that The Y520 does not come with GTX1060M but the website shows otherwise - "Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060M 4GB".
        Can anyone confirm that?

        • +3

Yes it's wrong, and it should be 1050ti 4GB. Told Lenovo about it earlier this week, but it looks like they haven't fixed it.

    • Placed an order for this deal, hope they will honoured it. Cheapest GTX1060 laptop!

      • +1

It's not about honouring it. It's the fact that they will just send the Y520 as is with the 1050Ti.

      • +1

They've now removed the i5 model of y520

  • Ok so its a Lenovo Legion Y520 15.6" FHD IPS, i5-7300HQ, 16GB RAM, 128GB SSD, GTX1050TI 4gb for $1401.54 ($1331.46 after cashrewards)

    • I'm pretty sure any of Scotty's Lenovo deals are ineligble for Cashrewards as he is the one that is taking a cut.

      Can he please confirm?

    • Whats the differece

  • Pretty decent!

  • If I am not planning to game, does it matter much having Nvidia graphics card instead of getting Intel HD Graphics 620… I'm thinking of getting the X1 carbon but like the 15.6' on 570p. Can't decide :(

    • There's also E570 (without the p) that's cheaper and lighter. However E570p has a real quadcore CPU not those ULV dial cores.

    • +1

I was struggling with the same decision! I think what swayed it for me was reading up on the performance of the Intel HD card on video editing. I don't do lots of it, but occasionally handle 4K videos which the 570p will handle better. The price points also played a part so went with the E570p. The 'p' version uses an aluminium body which is different to the the other E laptops and even has a backlit keyboard which will be useful for me. I spent a week contemplating and ended up getting the i5 e570p upgrading the ram to 16gb, and hard drive to 256gb. If you want a 'true' thinkpad then I would look at the T470p - I wish I had the money for it! Looks a great size and weight and its regularly feature in the top 10 for ultrabooks.

So if you're not gaming and video editing I think the X1 is a good option. Looks really nice too

      • +1

Hey mate. This is good advice for me, thanks a lot. I haven't done video editing or played games in the last two years at least. I feel I should try games since there is so much interest :) (but I won't.)

My jobs going to end in a couple of months, and then I'll have to give back the laptop they've given me. I am planning to buy laptop using salary sacrifice while I can.

In a way, I should get a nice lappy since there is a bit of discount from salary sacrifice as well. On the other hand, I might need the money in case I wasn't able to land a job soon enough. I'll get a X1 or a T once I finish the job application I am preparing right now.

I only saw later I wasn't very clear about my question. I was looking for an answer like yours.

        • +1

Happy I could help… I spent a fair bit of time deciding crawling forums and all sorts trying to help me make a decision. Salary sacrifice is a great option too, by the sounds of it the X1 would be a perfect fit for your needs

        • @dodgydarji: I got the X1 with i7-7500U, 16GB, 256ssd.
Didn't buy an extended warranty. Hope that'll not come back and bite me.

  • -2

make it 1000 than ill bite

    • edit: didnt mean to reply to u

hmmm should I keep my order for the e570p with 256gb ssd and 1tb hdd for $1315, or swap it for this… $146 extra for 1tb hhd +128gb ssd, i guess thats worth it. the 256gb ssd option is NVME as well, so should be faster than this 128gb drive

      • keep it ….. 128gb ssd is too small especially if you load office365 full suite locally .

  • I think this is an incredible deal. This laptop will last you indefinitely(for next 5-8 years) until the hardware dies.

In terms of specs required for everyday users I think we have peaked and anymore is really overkill unless you have specialised applications that require more grunt.

    • yeah ….. i upgraded from my 6th gen i5 for the e570 for screen not speed…. already had ssd but wanted FHD

      • That's awesome. Plans for the E570? Ebay it?

Have you seen this? Seems pretty cool.

        https://www.computeralliance.com.au/15.6-asus-mb169b-ips-fhd…

        • That does seem cool. I wonder what, if any, limitations are conferred from the USB power constraint.

        • +1

@embler: Monitors don't use much power these days being LED tech. At the same time USB3 can pump out a decent amount of current(2A).

        • not sure i want to lug an extra monitor with me when out and about and at home it's easier to have a normal monitor if your laptop is only had not fhd.

  • Do Lenovo do a 14" with a 1050ti?

  • +1

Channel 9 has only given me the budget for either upgrading the HDD to 2TB or the ram from 8GB to 16GB, suggestions? (For Y520)

    • What you using it for? I'd do the rambo personally.

      • Probably midrange gaming, multi tasking, some light cad work here and there

        • +1

They have removed the i5 model and the i7 comes default with 16gb. That should make your decision easier

        • @CodeXD: So go for the ram?

        • @Tracy Grimshaw: you don't have a choice, if you click through to view models for y520, nothing is customisable and there is only 1 set up

  • With the recently posted 10% code the E570p with (16GB and 1TB 5400 rpm - $300 worth) comes out at $1709.

    Slightly better value.

  • It's a shame they have removed the i5 option as the i7 with the 3Y warranty added after discount now comes up to $1850 (approximately). That's a lot closer to that $2K mark than the $1K or $1.5K thresholds that people seem to be aiming at..

Albeit for $1.85K you get the i7, 16G of ram, 1T disk plus SSD and 3Y.. (excluding any cashrewards as well)

    • They only removed the i5 on y520 model, i5 e570p is still available

  • Managed to order the E570p with (16GB and 1TB 5400 rpm) for $1614…

    • Did you use the LENOVO15 voucher code? That will give you better discount if you're spending over $1500

      • +1

Yes the 15% off code. Forgot to mention this was with 256GB SSD

        • Shouldn't it have come down to $1443? $1698 with 15% off. 16gb ram, 256gb ssd, 1tb hdd

        • @hoftos:
          It was the 1899 version…

If you are optioning the 1299 version up its $1698 for the i5 and $2098 for the i7. Hence why I used the $1899 offer as base.

  • This looks like a great all round laptop, fast CPU, fast GPU and fast storage. Yes there are faster and larger of everything, but this is an awesome sweet spot.

Though, I'd upgrade the SSD to 256GB SSD PCIe-NVMe OPAL2.0 for a total of $1,269.00. That way your storage is twice as large and faster too. It'll make the system more responsive.

  • So the way I see this, this is the best gaming laptop I'm likely to see for under $1500 for quite a while. Would I be right in saying that?

Trying to work out if there's any reason not to pull the trigger on this.

    • hard to beat for under $1500 and it will take another internal drive so add a 1tb or 2tb from msy and you can store all your steam games also.

only better deal for gaming for under $1500 is a desktop….. so depends if you have or need mobility.

Read the reviews on http://www.productreview.com.au/p/lenovo.html before buying any Lenovo product. I bought their product over the weekend and my nightmare has already started.

  • My ETA on shipping went from the 13th of May to the 25th. Has anyone else had their order delayed? I placed my order on the 6th.
