15.6" Portable Monitor IPS FHD - Single Cable, USB 3, Asus MB169B+ $305 @ MSY

51

A lot of crappy screens(1366x768 - I'm looking at you) on some very nicely spec'd out laptops these days. To solve the issue, buy one of these? I know it probably costs as much as the laptop - but I guess it's one of those items you buy and hopefully never have to replace. You can take it with you to your next laptop.

Also for a lot of people who who have a small XPS13 or X1 Carbon's for work, and do a bit of travelling/work at client sites - this is handy to give you a bigger screen or if you need dual screening to function a bit more efficiently, this is pretty cool.

I didn't know you could buy something like this - Full HD, IPS Screen, 1 cable, pretty light and portable.

Edit:
Buy from MSY not computer alliance. http://www.msy.com.au/peripherals/17017-asus-156-mb169b-1920…
It's $44 off from RRP which isn't an amazing deal, but it is a deal nonetheless. I guess I posted it so people would be aware this product exists and hopefully it helps you.

  • Screen size?

  • Cool product - can see it being handy if you travel a lot

Not sure if you are actually buying one or not, but in case you are, StaticIce this baby and you'll find it cheaper at MSY, etc.

  • Not the same brand but this would be cheaper and slightly bigger(cue 0.4 inch jokes).

Personally, I would get the Pro version of this for a little bit more money.

  • Portable

does it have its own battery source?

    • +1

No, it just means that it is powered through the usb port. You can power it through your laptop/tablet.

Staticice shows available cheaper including MSY as example.

  • Would this be useful as a second monitor? I have a crappy desk with a bookshelf on it

    • You can use this as a screen and also use another monitor. I have the AOC version, it also can rotate vertical. It fits in my 15” bag with the latop.

This doesn't have an hdmi port. The image is generated via the usb driver. They're not bad but can be restrictive because of that limitation.

    • yeah this. HDMI input would make it infinitely more useful.

      They're not bad

Apparently you have never used DisplayLink. It's (profanity) awful. Expect what feels like seconds of display lag.

      • Very small lag, but if your system isn't already pushed to it's limits it should be fine. I have 3 x DisplayLink monitors running consoles when I code, they're great and could never go back. All up lost about 3% of my CPU to power all 3 screens @ 1366x768.

      • I've used displaylink for two and half years in my old job to control two 24" 1080p monitors never had any issues. Sure, you wouldn't play 3D games with it, but works fine for office and video back too.

For a pure portable monitor with hdmi and fhd, this one is hard to beat

    • You could jam a Pi Zero W in there and have a sweet portable retro gaming rig

  • How well will this work with the samsung dex?

  • Can it connect to Android Phone?

    • only if your Android has OTG USB. Install the Displaylink drivers from the Play store and it will mirror. It may struggle to power from only the phone though - you may need to get it amplified or externally powered.

Hmm, torn here. This is OzBargain not 'OzProductShowcase' so I don't think this should really be here…. HOWEVER in saying that I appreciate the post because I had no idea single cabled USB screens had come so far. Pretty nice and I'd have many different uses for it but the point is 'is it a bargain?' I really want to give this a greenie but have no reason to sorry.

    • +1

I tend to agree. The original post wasn't a 'bargain' and was not the cheapest. It was more about saying the product was available. It was only updated with the MSY price after I pointed it out (after a few seconds of searching).

      • +3

Problem is, it's such a sweet product I had no idea about so I can't bring myself to neg it either ;)

    • +1

Yeah, I agree. Not after any votes. My goal was just to get people aware of the product cause I think a lot of people didn't know it existed.

"It's $44 off from RRP which isn't an amazing deal, but it is a deal nonetheless. I guess I posted it so people would be aware this product exists and hopefully it helps you."

      • I get and appreciate your intent but the original post was probably better for the forums. The MSY price is pretty good for Australian stock though. Note that the neg vote was because the original post was not the cheapest so not a bargain.

      • All good mate! Negs can be harsh for things like this but understandable nevertheless. Cheers for the knowledge anyway :)

  • I've been wondering if these sorts of products exist but I suppose for a lot cheaper … and smaller, don't care if it's pretty crap quality. As not for general or expanded use, but for something quick and dirty for say setting up or diagnosing headless machines like a NAS/Microserver.
So far the cheapest I've found are dodgy-but-probably-workable mini projectors on eBay.

    • Won't work for that. It's software driven so you have to install a driver for it to work.

    • Exactly one of the many uses I'd have for one too but as Walshy says these need drivers to operate so they wont show anything until an OS has booted. This alone is the main reason I haven't jumped on one to date. Better off just buying a small, cheap, Chinese 12V VGA/HDMI monitor for those rare occasions you need one I reckon… something I haven't done either ;)

    • Yeah that's what I was thinking too. Besides, those el-cheapo projectors cost a lot less than these portable monitors. I guess because they don't meet the definition of portable per se (requiring mains power).

But yeah, I was just thinking "surely a projector isn't the cheapest display device with a video input?" - I guess it is? :S

  • MB169C+ is much better for any device that can do displayport over USB-C
