this has been the case since the app came out last july

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/258749

    • +3

Deals can be reposted after 6 months.

      • +3

not calling repost just pointing out it's not new

      • +6

It's actually a silly rule. I can literally go on this page and repost every single one that's older than 6 months.

But what's the point? It doesn't add value to OzBargain.

        • +1

You have a point there, perhaps OzB instead could algorithmly renew their unexpired ads every 6 months.

Mods, please remove post if duplicate, ta

        • Well, we get complaints when we remove duplicates (that was 2 months ago, that was 5 months ago, etc etc.)
Then we complaints when people post duplicates, as above.

          Can't win.

Unlike you and I most members & guests haven't seen all 185,260 deals. So if we have the choice between having a member seeing the same deal again after 6 months vs. showing a member a deal that they may have not seen, we opt for the latter. It's a good reminder especially if it is a good deal.

Saw this offer posted on GYG's facebook page 2 days ago

      • -4

You also read one of my last comments posted about 12 hours ago that was referring to this long running deal.

        • +4

How can you be so sure that he had seen your comment?

        • +1

Yeah I didn't see your comment, because the post itself doesn't get refreshed back up the page if you add a comment to an old post, so I didn't see your comment on a really old post.

Perhaps a suggestion would be for OzB to refresh posts when comments are added or perhaps automatically refresh posts which haven't expire say every 6 months

I did miss the original post when posting this as GYG had been having quite a few offers going around lately and there were a number of GYG bargains on OzB, so had just missed the detail in the crowd

        • -3

          @ronnknee:

It seems very odd that a short time after a mention of this deal that a deal post shows up.

Cant be 100% sure, but it does seem quite a coincidence.

    • Now set as LONG RUNNING DEALS.

  • +8

    Old news. Burritos are overpriced.

    • It's free for newbies like me, can't complain when it's free :)

      • -3

It's free but you will spend more money than if you hadn't taken the free item.

Of course not every single person is going to spend more money but since every single person will claim that this cannot be true for them it's only wise to understand your own limitations.

        • +6

In this case, a standard burrito at GYG costs $11.50 and this offer is for a minimum of $11.50, so most people would get their lunch for free and if not just a dollar or two for extras, rather than having to fork out $10+ for today's lunch

The main point here is that the offer is worth min $11.50 and most of the burritos at GYG costs the same amount. If the prices of the offer and burritos differ significantly say by $5, then I would perhaps agree with you

        • +4

          that's a non sensical attitude.

even if you get the extras for $1 or $2, you would have spent probably 10 times that eating lunch elsewhre.

even if eat food from home, it'll cost you more than $2

    • You think? I thought it's not a bad price for a chicken burrito bowl at $12.50.

    • Fake news?

  • +5

At least link to the original deal.

  • +2

never get the burito bowls… the quantity of food they put in it is inconsistent. one day you get almost 2 servings and another day its like half a scoop of rice and meat. the burito wraps are much more consistent in size and quantity…

    • +4

Really? I mean that kinda makes sense but just thinking back to my own experiences. My experience with bowls has been fine. No noticeable difference in portion sizes.

    • +2

I got a burrito and it was full of rice. Cant be bothered playing russian roulette again. Its like dominos, 90% its barely any toppings, and the odd 10% you get lots of toppings.

      • +1

Maybe this just depends on the store you went to and the person serving you on the day.

Can I ask which store did you go to?

    • The tortillas taste like ass but

      • +2

Did you finish your sentence? Please don't leave us in suspense.

        Were you going to say,
"The tortillas taste like donkey, but …"
        … I still like them?
        … they're still delicious?
        … I enjoy eating donkey?

        • +1

Maybe it was a typo and he meant "ass butt"… Double the rear end to emphasise his point?

        • -1

The tortillas taste like ass but …an ass is an ass.
As an ass tasting expert… The tortillas taste like ass but that's what I expected anyway.
The tortillas taste like ass but … that's my fetish.

          ???

    • +3

Bowls are better because you can then fill it up with onions, corriader etc.

      • You can fill up a few small containers with the extras & have with burrito. Same, same.

        • small containers

I fill the bowl to the rim, that will be A LOT OF small containers.

        • @garratt torlesse:
There never seems to be enough extra ingedidents at my local to do that, so I go back for more after pointing out it's almost out the previous trip - would work for bowls too ;-)

I thought GYG stopped this promotion as uni students were buying $2 sims to open new accounts and getting free burritos.
    Source

    • Apparently not, they had posted this offer on their Facebook page 2 days ago. Better get mine before they stop lol

    • Original article was 8 months ago. Some OzBargainers have been doing this regularly since the start, so not just Uni students.

Haven't noticed any change. As I SIM swap free or $1 starter packs every 28 days & free $2 SIMs are regular deals, there's a free meal waiting then if I want it ;-)

    • So just 5 max burittos right? Since you can only activate 5 sims max

      • +1

No real limit on max SIMs can have active.
I've got so many active (at least 10, but only 2 with credit) as Telstra does not deactivate SIM for around 6 months after credit expires & I activate a new 1 every 28 days. Then there's the other Telco's SIMs.

    • +1

I thought GYG stopped this promotion as uni students were buying $2 sims to open new accounts and getting free burritos.

They started logging the Device ID.
Can't open a new account with the same phone (even with a different phone number) with the promo active on the later accounts.

      • +1

        Must be recent change.
If device is identified, could use an old smart phone with a free SIM & get a free meal.

        • Changed about half a year ago.

        • @cwongtech:
Strange as I've got a few free in last 6 months with same 2 phones. Will try when return to Oz for a free meal ;-)
Certainly shows Device ID permission required for app.

      • +1

        $2 sim + bluestack?

        • That could work.

      • +1

Device ID isn't exposed in iOS.

        • Again, device ID isn't exposed in iOS. The link you've provided is talking about Android devices.

        • @aaathats3as:
As discussed 8 months ago - link above was to start of original discussion of possible device ID use in this app - by neil & others, including iOS… Access to the device's ID was removed from iOS many years ago.

    • +8

I think it's generous of GYG or any other business to offer one free meal to get you to try it.

However to set up multiple accounts on different phones/SIMs is just scamming.

      • +1

        yeh its pretty exploitive.

TBH i wouldnt bother with the effort. still $2 sim, some fiddling around.

    • +1

Last year I would go to phone stores, use the numbers from the active phone to register accounts and claim free burritos on a daily basis.

Then the app glitched out and would give me free burritos every time I opened it. I think I clocked up 20 something bowls for free =)

  • I just tried ordering the first time, and it offered me the freebie, but asked to register my phone. Now it's trying to charge me for it???

    • +1

Yeah, same shit happ to me today. I coughed up for the meal anyways at the register rather than via the app. The manager at the store told me to email hola at GYG.com.au who will then reinstate the free offer back on to your account and advised me not to order via the app as the offer is only valid for the first time order via the app.

  • +1

    Lunch sorted!!! Thanks op

  • Does kogan and optus sim work for this to make a new account.. I was unsuccessful..and does it really track the phones imei now??
I had optus $2 simin but couldn't activate it as it ask for recharging.. same with kogan .. damn I wanted some cheap lunch

  • Just tried the app. Doesn't give a free burrito anymore. The link on the website is also down. Did notice that there was a recent update to the app? can someone else try and respond?

  • I've also just tried the app and this doesn't seem to work either. Can we please mark this deal as expired ?
