Great deal. Time to get another pocket wifi

  • Hm… Should go pass Woolworth tomorrow to have a look. Thanks for suggesting this deal

  • Does this one have an LCD screen on it? Or is it the cheaper lower end model without?

    • cheaper lower end one

      • Not lower end electronically, just doesn't have the LCD display.

  • NSW confirmed.

    Purchase some just now

    • +1

      which store?

  • So the one thing I've never easily worked out with these deals - because the plan or credit expires in 30 days (which is really annoying because for some things 3G of data would easily last for 12 months..) - what's the cheapest way to keep this working for a whole year ?

    • +2

Unlock it, and find best provider deal which offers long life. IIRC Telstra has a $150/12 month sim (25gb) but this may not be the best deal.

For me, I have a Telstra data share sim which I can use.

      • Any chance you could post a link ? I've spent 15 minutes searching the Telstra site for the $150 sim and found one reference but haven't been able to figure out how to buy this at all.. it's amazing how hard Telstra make it (but I assume they'd rather sell you a bunch of much more expensive plans.. )

$150 for 12 months seems pretty good value when you want to set this up for someone who doesn't use much data (just email and light web browsing), like my mum..

    • +3

Optus had 365 day expiry plan with 25gb data for $130
Virgin have 365 day expiry plan with 10gb data for $99
Vodafone have 2 365 day plans:
      - 12Gb for $60
      - 30Gb for $125

Understand however, if you go for anyone other then Telstra, you are likely to have slower speeds then you could have due to frequencies used. Also the modem needs to be unlocked.

Thanks Op. Tried ringing around but most stores did not stock it, and one Neutral Bay used to have it but sold out. Finally found Crows Nest (NSW) had a few left so I picked two up. Perfect for relatives visiting Australia in a couple of months time. Expiry is early 2019.

    • +1

Same here, no stock in South Sydney :(

      • Not sure why I got -ed, I went to Rockdale, Kogarah and Miranda last night and called Hurstville, Caringbah, Wolli Creek, Punchbowl, Engadine, Campsie, Kingsgrove…

    • Got one this morning from Crows Nest but they said they were getting lots of calls about it.

No stock in Balgowlah or Warringah Mall.

      • +1

Probably my fault for posting the above last night when they did have stock. Comment further down says no stock at Crows Nest now.

These need a firmware update to hardware after activating sim to make them work. After that all good. Can do this via the newly activated sim.

    • +2

Can you elaborate on this? I'm not planning to open/use mine yet (waiting for family who are holidaying here in a couple of months time) but would be keen to know of how hard this is to do/any practical challenges. Thx.

      • it does an auto update like most devices patch when you turn them now a days.

  • +1

so how Recent is this model , whats the newst one cost ?

    and telstra data Share ?

    • +2

It's recent enough that it's 4GX, but there are newer hotspot devices from Telstra which start at $69 > https://www.telstra.com.au/broadband/mobile-broadband/prepai…

In other words, $10 is a bargain.

Telstra Data Share sim is if you already are on certain Telstra plans, you can pay $5/mth for another sim to share the data pool.

    • +4

This is a current Gen 4GX affordable basic wifi modem that will work with all the current Telstra 3G/4G frequencies including the latest B28 700 mHz band. Battery is non removable, has 2 x external antenna sockets, 4 x LED status lights and includes a cable and usb charger. If you have a Telstra sim with data share you could use that in this modem, other than that this comes with 3GB / 30 day expiry prepaid starter credit.

  • +7

Had to do this for a friend of mine as he was a bit stuck. Normally, you get online to activate sim, answer a few personal questions with some valid id, ten to fifteen minutes later your surfing away. In this case you do this and although you can connect device with your own receiving device, no internet connection.

As I have some experience and have various modems, I removed sim and inserted it into a working compatible wifi modem and everything worked fine, so had to be modem. Opened browser on laptop with a wifi connection to this new device, enter http://192.168.0.1 and then got into new account info by entering the default password ( which is "password" ) and you will get a prompt box to upgrade firmware. Just do this ( with enough power in modem, or connect to charger ), takes a few minutes with a reboot, then all good to go. All the info how to get into modem setting and access account is in the starter user guide included. After that she works well. Did this to two in one day without any issues.

    • +1

Thanks for that. Just to clarify, with this Telstra 4GX modem, can I do everything I need out of the box without already having another modem/internet connection/PC? Or do I need at least a normal PC/wifi? Trying to work out what's easiest and if I should do it now somehow or wait until it's going to get used/activated.

      • +1

Pretty sure you have to have an activated current sim in to do this as otherwise the system will not let you upload online through modem. I did it with a laptop as find a keyboard easy for this purpose. The second one I did with the same first active sim as I also did not want to activate that one yet, but wanted modem ready loaded up to go when ready to activate as needed.

    • +1

Thanks mate, would you recommend to do the firmware update before using unlock code?

      • +1

I think you would have to do update with Telstra sim via their network for it to work. Probably Telstra did this on purpose so people need to activate sim to use on any network, even if unlocked and using on different network lol.

Cant go past the Optus prepaid Huawei wifi modem ( forgot model number, but has white button in middle with Optus logo ), that is often on sale for $25 or so and is unlocked and works on all bands 100% with all Telcos in Aus.

        • I think you mean this one: Huawei E5573 Optus 4G WiFi Modem. Why is that one better than this Telstra one?

        • +1

yep …. optus has the 700mhz support and mine were unlocked straight out of the box.

before people spend money on unlock codes test it first … my last few modems from telstra and optus have been unlocked already.

have a few because sometimes the deals are attractive and you get new tech compared to topping up a sim.

        • @garage sale:

Yep, same. Often cheaper to get on sale hardware with starter credit rather than re-charge.

That's the optus one that's unlocked I really like, it has both 850 and 900 mHz for 3G and all 4G bands for Optus/Telstra and still can work for Vodafone reasonably well ( missing the 4G B5/850mHz channel I think ).

Always good to get the recommended modem tuned to carrier to cover all needed bands if can get cheaply.

        • Used this in Singapore no problems.

    • +1

Thanks for the info. I did not receive an update prompt. Manually checking for updates results in an error. My firmware version is M01. Maybe it is the latest out of the box?

      • +1

Good to know for some, must be newer updated models. All good.

    Officeworks price match! Yay.

    • Oh wow, would they?

    • I just checked the Officeworks site and it looks like ZTE MF910V may be temporarily unavailable and I can't seem to find available stock at any of my local stores:

      https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/telstra-wi…

    • I tried this but they wouldn't match based on receipt, only by a website or brochure showing the price.

  • Damn I want one of these… can't find them though

I just rang the Blackburn South store and spoke to a sales assistant named 'Haley' and she confirmed that they had plenty of stock left. I asked her to put one on hold for me under my name 'Michael'. I drive as fast as I possibly could only to arrive at the store to have 'Haley' tell me that a guy had just got there before me. She unwittingly made the mistake of asking if his name was 'Michael' to which he replied 'yes' and then he proceeded to buy all 5 modems that were left in stock. Obviously I was so pissed off when I had heard what just had happened and ended up leaving the store empty handed. If there is any justice left in this world, I hope the greedy and selfish person who impersonated me and 'broaden' all of modems at the Blackburn store will have bad karma for the rest of his life /end rant

    • +11

That's why you leave your mobile phone number and tell them you'll confirm both your name and number when you collect the goods.

      • +2

Thanks mate, that's very a good tip. I can promise you that I won't be so naive and make the same mistake again next time.

        • +10

You should've got her number instead dude, never leave empty handed =p

        • +14

          @montorola:

You should've got her number instead dude, never leave empty handed =p

This isn't the movies, she's not going to pick the loser. The other 'Michael' picked her up after her shift ended.

        • @Maverick-au: you give new meaning to being connected

      • +8

And Haley will ask the guy is ur number xxxx xxx xxx and the guy says yes. Won't change a thing. U gotta drives faster Mike.

        • No, the idea is you confirm your name and number, not them

    • I hope the broaden is happy that he has ended ruining my night. If there is any justice left in this world, no one will buy any of the modems that he will list on ebay or gumtree later

      • +7

Unlikely. They'll probably sell them at a nice profit and probably didn't even leave an up vote for this deal.

        • +1

The only people who know about this deal are on here.. so own up Broden

      • +1

Same day my phone got stolen. Feel your pain man.

      • Not Broden. D. Haley was really nice.

    • Next time use this name instead.

      • "why ya cryin' now?"

    • Blackburn North also sold out.

    • +1

'Haley' is not a very smart girl.

Was she at least good looking?

      • -4

Nah. Kinda chubby.. not to my tastes.

What happened was I rushed to the store area outfront and asked about the modem. She smiled and said you Michael? I said why not and then she handed me 5. I thought what the heck. Okay will take them all .. $50 in total. What a score lol 👌💪💪

    • Probably just an excuse. Staff bought it all.

  • +2

    Hi, guys,

Please allow me to ask some silly questions here.

What's the difference between using a spare phone to create a hotspot and using this kind of WiFi modem?

Can I insert a data only SIM card into a phone to create hopspot?

And vice versa, can I use normal SIM cards (e.g., with unlimited calls) for this modem?

    Sorry for these questions.

Any answer will be very appreciated.

    Thanks a lot.

    • hotspot is a hotspot unless on 4X network

      • +3

        Hi,

Thanks a lot for your reply.
        Although I am still confused.
        Never mind. :)

      • +2

So what does a hotspot become on a 4X network?

        • +1

Yeah, would love to know this too.

  • There were 6 in Parramatta Westfield as of 10 mins ago.

  • Just grabbed one from Merimbula and there was at least one left.

    Thx op.

  • +2

I already have 2 x E5573's and 3 x E8372h's (and an assortment of 3G-only stuff), yet I have this strange urge to see if I can find one of these.

    Damn you, OzBargain! :p

    • The ZTE will out perform both those Huawei modems, in fact the e8372h despite being an innovative wingle device, performs like a dog for me an I've tried both the Telstra and the Optus models.

      • I managed to get what was probably the last MF910V that Woolworths in Tuggeranong had, so now I'll be able to compare them. :)

  • +1

Nothing at crows nest, st ives, Macquarie and Marsfield..

    • +1

Top ryde sold out as well

    • +1

I got 1 last one lurking in the bottom drawer at Crows Nest about 1 hr ago

      • Pays to ask them to check thoroughly, or just to get lucky lol.

  • How to get it unlocked for $3?

  • +2

Thanks, was considering buying one awhile ago.. I get 25Gb through my work SIM.. just wanted an easier device to use rather than the 4G stick.

    • You will love it. Can put this in better signal spot if needed away from your device ( up to 20 odd metres away ). Good for3 to 8 hours surfing on and off with full charge, and can attach power bank or leave plugged into wall charger.

  • None left at either of the Ferntree Gully Woolies, 3 left at Belgrave now.

  • Anyone got a picture of the label?

    • See https://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/CI0AAOSwcgNZEZXt/$_35.JPG

  • Can someone please scan their receipt showing the date and time of purchase? Officeworks I went to refused to price match.

  • +4

just went to woolworths leichhardt in Sydney they had 4 left in stock +61 2 8565 9251

    • Went to the counter at Leichhardt woolies, and were sold out end of last week.

  • Just nabbed one from Morley Galleria. Still 2 left apparently

  • Sorry for being naive, but can this be used as an ADSL2+ router and modem? If not, what's the difference between this product and that?

    • It also won't make coffee.

It won't plug into a phone port so that's the easiest way to say it won't be an ADSL router….

  • How useful would this be for international travelling?

What are the chances overseas SIM cards will work with this thing if I unlock it for $3?

Could be handy getting internet on all devices whilst travelling instead of just my phone and losing my roaming aussie number…

Thanks OP! What a deal, I hope I can find one!

    • +2

How useful would this be for international travelling?

Anywhere from totally useless to semi-useful, depending on which region of the world and your preferred carrier. You need to compare what bands this device has (not that many, really) against who uses what around the world.

What are the chances overseas SIM cards will work with this thing if I unlock it for $3?

Any SIM should "work" in it, if unlocked, but as for actually getting a 3G or 4G signal, see my first answer.

EDIT: Even in Australia, its usefulness on Optus is reduced, and even more so on Vodafone.

      • Thanks, yeah not a whole heap of bands on this thing hey…

Wasn't able to find one anyway so no matter :)

        Cheers

  • +1

Great bargain and thanks for sharing. Telstra 4g wi-fi battery just failed so this is a better and cheaper option. Picked up two this morning at Gasworks. Still two left. Was gonna take the lot but that's just greedy.

  • +4

Search for 'modem' at woolies online and get balsamic vinegar.

  • I got 2 at Woolies at Redlynch Qld

  • Got the last one in Eastwood NSW. Thanks OP!

None left at West Ryde. Thank god I didn't really need one anyhow

  • None at Chester Hill

  • Riverwood none. Someone got last 2 about 8am. Thanks for letting us know.

    • Is the person who negged the person who got them?
