I was the person who got them from Riverwood - didn't realise they were the last -they didn't seem too happy with selling me 2.

Just read the comment now though and chucked when I realised that I only just managed get them by dragging my butt out of bed on a Saturday morning!

PS Didn't Neg comments, I have actually now +1 for getting a mention!

        • Chucked? Did you mean chuffed?

  • Has anyone tried a microsim adaptor in here? These modems always say don't use them hence why I'm a little nervous/reluctant but wanted to check if it works or not.

    • Yes

    • Should work with full size adaptor ( needs full size sim ).

Just make sure to level both out smoothly so it does not jam or get stuck.

  • Thanks op. Picked up one at Robina,QLD. Expiration Apr 2019. Several available (Woolworths upstairs in the Kitchens section)

Does anyone know if this will work in other countries.. like new Zealand? Would make a cheap pocket wifi if it does. Get it unblocked and stick in a voda sim.

    • +1

New Zealand is part of Australia

(sorry don't know the answer to your question)

    • +1

Should work but limited to not include Vodafone's B5 850mHz 4G band widely used outside CBD.

mascot store rejected to sell me.

    • +1

what do you mean? as in they had stock, but just refused to sell it to you? if that's true, for what reason did they refuse sale?

    • I was thinking of dropping by that store earlier today because I was in the area but a friend told me that it's one of the worst woolies in aus, so I didn't bother. Glad I didn't waste my time

  • Picked up 2 from Seaford Meadows SA. Now none left. None in Seaford SA

  • I got the last three from Hallett Cove SA this morning. Expiry date on the boxes is Nov 2018 so I'm all good for a while. Woolies rewards got me a tenner off as well so 3 for $20. Can't be bad.

    • +1

You didn't get an extra 10 off because you purchased the routers though you would have got that in the future. So it still cost you $30 for 3.

      • +1

No. It cost me $20. The wife can worry about the other tenner from her rewards card at her leisure :)

I bought the Telstra Lite 4GX (ZTE MF90) model for $5 at Woolies

They didnt have theone OP posted at Pagewood.

Can be unlocked for free (use https://routerunlock.com/unlock-zte-modem-and-phone-for-free…)

    • whats the difference between the ZTE MF90 model and the one the OP posted? Aren't both LTE/4G?

      • I feel like a fool for pawning a old 4g ZTE Telstra usb modern for $5 & i just found about this post today :(

      • Zte mf90 is older, doesn't have the big lcd

      • +1

This one has 4gx, MF90 doesn't. Neither have LCD screen.

  • If anyone interested, you can unlock various ZTE routers - check here

    https://routerunlock.com/

    • Not for free though

      • seijai didn't say it's free though

  • Picked up 2 of these in Wollongong this morning (at Fairy Meadow - they had at least one more at the counter). I assume there is probably more at the Woolies at Bulli..

    • Any more left at Wollongong?

  • +1

Success at Glenferrie Rd Hawthorn :)

    • Do you know that they still got any left?

  • Seems like someones doing the rounds in Perth, mate of mine just went into Beechboro Woolworths to grab one and was told a bloke just came in and grabbed their last 14!

    Crikey

  • one left at Yarra Junction, Vic (20 mins ago )

  • +1

Confirmed at Merrylands, NSW. Thanks OP!

  • Went into my local Woolies (Mullumbimby).
There was one left. Still had full price sticker on it, asked lady to scan it for me, was doubtful it was even on special and very reluctant (mainly because she has to slowly waddle around to the front of the counter to unlock the cabinet) and then got one of the others to scan it for her (save herself a round trip) and woohoo! it scans as $10, guy next to me is like "oh wow that's a good deal!" And I'm like hands of mister, i will fight you if i have to!
Unlocking for ~$3 as suggested currently…

    • Hey fellow Byron Shire Neighbour. Was just about to call them before I start driving over from O/Shrs. Sure that was last one? What network are you planning to use this on?

      • +1

It was the only one they had on their display shelf and she did open up the drawer in front of her first to look for it before waddling out to the front to get it, so i assume it was probably the last one.
There was also a 3G wifi vodaphone one there for i think $19, down from $39.
I'm going to try it out with vodaphone first, hopefully it gets reception out in the sticks where i work, they have a good $60 plan that lasts 365 days and gives you 1gb data a month, which is all i'll need.

  • 8 Left in Dandenong plaza woolworths, just got one.

also no stock in endeavour hills or keysborough (parkmore)

    • wow you guys are so fast

  • Got one in Adelaide even tho I don't need it lol

  • +2

Mine has been successfully Unlocked after 30 min I bought it :) Sweet!!
I've tested it with Vodafone and Optus and no issue.
The only thing I'm not sure about is that I had to manually change the VPN setting…
From my previous experience if you leave the setting on 'Automatic" the modem should set up automatically.
I may have missed it on the menu, not sure…

    • Nice, tell us how you went about doing that. Got the code from eBay? Then what did you do.

      • +3

I've used the link has been posted before from someone else: http://www.ebay.com/itm/151480556866
I've bought it and received the code in about 20 min.
Firstly insert a non-Telstra SIM card into the modem, turn it on and login into the Control Panel (go to 192.169.0.1 using "password" as password to login)
After login the first thing it does is asking for an unlocking code. and Bang :) done.

Did you have to do firmware update as others have said ?

        • +2

@endotherm: Sorry about the wrong IP.. was a typo :)
          No firmware update required.

  • Does anyone know if the sim card can be set up as $30 call credit or is it 3 GB only?

    • Just got one and tried to activate. Since it forces you to pick mobile broad under device type, you're limited to 3GB data plan only. Tried using both serial and service number.

  • Got myself one from Woolworths Vincentia.

  • +1

Bought it Carrum Downs, Victoria. Followed activation steps, telstra was having technical difficulties, got referred to the chat, activated via chat.
Asked about unlocking, they wanted $85 to do it. i hanged up…
So unlocking it via google 😃

  • Where can you update the firmware? I have bought a unlock code. Can anyone provide a link for the firmware updage?

  • +2

Funny short story, I checked my local WW and they were out of stock. I didn't bother to go to any other store. I drove to Wollongong this afternoon from Sydney to meet up with friends. I stopped at WW to buy some soft drinks. I thought why not ask if they any in stock. They told me they have one but in hold for someone until 4pm and because now 6pm I can have it. So I bought :)

Thanks to ozbargainer in Wollongong for holding this for me :p
I am sorry to take it but you were too slow. I hope you can find another one.

  • Got one, was trying to access the system this runs, potentially for a free unlock. Apparently the ZTE MF823/831/910 were all pretty similar, and can be triggered to expose ADB and shell. Seems to be patched now - I didn't need to update firmware, but I presume this issue is what the firmware update was about.

Going to pay the $3, not skilled enough to muck around with this updated firmware.

  • Did the rounds in Bendigo and got the last few. Kangaroo Flats, Market Square & Golden Square all out. Thanks OP!

  • Nambour, QLD Woolworths yesterday had plenty, I got three of them. There were 6 or more left at 9am. They actually had one on the inside service desk counter with a $10 sign on it. I was surprised they had not all sold.

  • I bought 2 because.. well, that's what happens when you read enough OzBargain and you're compelled.. (in reality, one likely for mum and the other one for son in law's father who has no internet at present so it seemed like a good deal). For $10 (and I got two different expiry dates, March 2018 and April 2019) it seemed worthwhile in case of travelling to hang onto one if it doesn't get used..

What are people doing that are buying 4/6/10 of these doing with them ?? Surely the resale market isn't that great.. and even if you are doubling your money, that's.. $100 profit if you resold 10.. Is there a thriving market for these in North Korea or something ?

  • +1

There is 1 left at randwick nsw 2 mins ago. Be quick.

  • Cheers matey, picked up one this morning.

Edit: Anyone know how long the data lasts once activated? Assuming 30 days?

  • +8

Some notes on my experience: I unlocked it via this link http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/221395803596 cost me $2.27. Enter your IMEI as a Paypal Message and you should get the unlock code back within about 15 20 minutes. Chucked in a Vodafone SIM and it prompted me for the unlock code, entered it, joila all good.

If using another carrier SIM you will need to enter in the appropriate APN. To do this:

    1) Go into Settings > Network Settings > APN.
    2) click the "add new" button. Enter a Profile Name (eg, Vodafone) and the APN (eg, live.vodafone.com… you'll need to google it for other carriers). Click "save".
    3) click "disconnect" to stop use the Telstra APN
    4) select the Voda APN you just created and click "Set as Default"
    5) click "Connect"
    6) you should now be connected to Vodafone (or Optus or whoever).

Note: ON Voda my reception here must be a bit crappy and I'm either on H or 3G, yet to connect to 4G, maybe it doesn't have the right frequencies and won't?

Also: If you switch to a Telstra Postpaid SIM, you can change the APN to Telstra.wap and then it appears that the web interface in the modem will show your usage meter for the Plan for the SIM you have inserted, which is very handy.

Probably goes without saying, but you can also connect via USB to your PC and use that connection as a network device rather than use the Wifi if you want. I'm yet to try plugging this modem into the USB port on a router or something but guessing this would work as a backup 4G device as well.

Awesome value for $10, thanks to the OP :)

Yep, you'll only see Vodafone 4G on one of these where Vodafone has 4G 1800MHz. Lookup what Vodafone is using for 4G in your area; if anything, it's probably 850MHz, or maybe even 2100MHz, which Vodafone has put a lot of into service lately. It's a rare pocket WiFi that has 4G 850; I think unicorns are more readily available. Pocket WiFi's with 4G 2100 are a bit more common (eg; my Optus E5573's have it).

If you don't know how to figure out what Vodafone has near you, give us a rough idea of where you are and one of us can probably figure it out.

        Good comments thanks
Ref your problem with Voda, this was posted on p1 of comments. Also in the user guide that comes with the modem

        Supported Bands:
        4G (CAT4) 700/1800/2600 MHz
        3G 850/2100 MHz

    • Probably goes without saying, but you can also connect via USB to your PC and use that connection as a network device rather than use the Wifi if you want.

Do you need extra software/drivers to do that?
When I plug mine into my pc, it recognizes the device but doesn't connect to internet.
      Using Windows 10.

edit: nevermind, found the software on the device.

    • Where exactly do you input the unlock code? I've inserted a non-Telstra sim, but I don't think this actually has an LCD screen. Are we supposed to connect it to a computer and insert the code there?

      • Connect via WiFi, then browse to 192.168.0.1. Default password is "password".

        • That worked! Thanks!

  • None at Rouse Hill, NSW.
They had a couple of the Optus ones from this deal though: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/308115

    • For anyone in Melbourne, there's one left at the Eltham store as of 10:45 today.

  • Got 1 in Woolies Newington NSW.. 1 left

    • Got the last one at Newington, thanks!
Somehow it scanned at $59 and had to be manually reduced to $10.

I have used a very similar modem - it was the Telstra Advanced III - which I think might be a later revision of this one.

I was amazed how quick the download speeds were.

I was getting 10 megabytes per second regularly in my home.
In the same home, my fibre to the node NBN connection supplied by Telstra only gives me 2 megabytes per second maximum for the same files..

Sold out in Nelson Bay and Salamander Bay NSW….

  • None at Baulkham Hills, NSW.

  • Anyone know if this would work with Vivid wireless when unlocked?

    • Anyone know if this would work with Vivid wireless when unlocked?

It doesn't have the band that Vivid uses.

  • Got 1 from Kingsway Woolies in WA. I think there is 1 or 2 left for anyone else ..

  • As of now, 5 left in carrum downs woolies
