While this may be a bargain but the point of the $2 tokens is to deter derros from abandoning trolleys 1km from the mall :|

    • +2

      Lol +1 for "derros ".

    • +3

But you still need return the trolley to get your token back

I thought, when i was younger, [arriving at the airport] that the $2 trolley payment at the airport baggage arrival, means you are buying and keeping the trolley :-)

      • +3

If you can get it in your car I guess you are?

      • its like $4 or $6 now i think…

    • +2

      A derro wouldn't give up $2.

      • +1

        That's the point

      • And they're unlikely to have a 14c coin either to take up this deal.

    • +14

it's not the derros … I live in bayside Melbourne, and high rents, lots of flats, not much off street parking for cars, in general the tenants without cars use it to wheel the groceries home and then dump the trolley.

Also handy if you leave in the middle of the street so cars slow down ….. at crossings …… use to block out your favourite parking spot infont of your house, 101 uses ……
The steel is a bit soft to be used as bbq grate and limited used for the wheels I've found.

      • +2

If they cannot find $20 to buy their own trolley instead of stealing, they are derros/bogan/feral-scum, whatever you want to call them.

If the police won't act on these thieves, we need to form an armed vigilante movement. Make my day.

        • +2

          /#ArmedVigilanteTrolleySavers!

@Putnum: damn… you beat me to that hash tag.

wonder how people does not feel guiltyl pushing the supermarket trolley across traffic light, again and again. Sometimes dozens are dumbed at the same spot.

would like to see on the spot fine $500 applied to the idiots.

      • +1

My council recently stuffed our letterboxes with a notice that said that leaving shopping carts on public property is dumping, which attracts a $300 fine. Difficult to catch anyone, however. The local Coles has electronic wheel locks to deter this crime.

        • Electronic wheel lock one is useless, i used tosee plenty got wheeled outside shopping centre, and it became a hazard around car park. That's why my nearby Coles switched back to the old coin style after 2 years of trialing.

  • +3

I find trolley keys more convenient

    • You mean cheaper lol

      • Well in the long run. It's very easy to lose a trolley token.

        • Or a gold coin

  • +5

They are handing these out for free at Lane Cove Woolworths. Been doing so for the last year

    • +4

They're giving them out for free at south Yarra, VIC too

      • +6

I cant believe your neggin over 35c! and for only handful of location compared to no free ones in other locations… omg!

        • +3

          Negative voting guidelines:
"The deal is not the cheapest available"

Edit: I'm not saying its a bad price. It's probably worth just checking another Woolworths if you're in the area. Be bit of a bummer to find out you paid for something that is free down the road.

Also, this does work in the Coles trolleys

        • @StevenUniverse:

          well!… it is now! 14c!

          pokes tounge out at @StevenUniverse:

        • @bonky:

At this rate it will be free tomorrow! Haha

  • +2

Kind of eliminates the whole point of having tokens if they're this cheap, doesn't it?

  • Havent seen trolleys that need coins for years, but I thought the coin went in the next trolley in line to release it from the queue.

    • +2

Never been to a ALDI then

      • +2

Yes and no. Never used a trolley at Aldi. Never bought into the Aldi being as good but cheaper thing I found it hit and miss. Where I live I dont think they need a coin anyway, but I could be wrong on that.

        • I just grab a Coles or Woolies trolley then head into Aldi….

    • +1

No, coin goes into the trolley you want to take and when you reattach it to the queue, your coin is released. Has to be this way for trolleys accepting both $1 and $2 coins. Same for all supermarkets.

  • Thanks bonky. Is this available at all woollies?

  • Just stick in the back of a key or a washer.

  • -3

I was given one for free from Woollies, no deal…

    • I paid for mine sat Aldi so it is a deal :-)

can these be used in poker machines or parking meters ?

      • I paid for mine sat Aldi so it is a dea

Silly you then… why pay when you can get them free?

  • +10

Pro-tip for anyone that's been to Japan

Save all your 1yen coins (worth roughly 1c ea)

Keep 2 in your wallet in Aus, you'll never spend them obviously, and they work as a $2 coin in the trolleys, if you cbf taking your trolley back it only costs you 1c to be lazy

I have a bag of 20 of them at home

    • +1

Ah you're one of those that leave trolleys 5km from the Supermarket.

      • +1

No actually, I go mental at those people pushing a trolley to their house…

I have never taken a trolley out of a shopping centre complex, and do return them 99% of the time.

        • +4

Why not 100% of the time?

        • +2

Been there done that. About ten years ago.

Used to leave trolleys in front on the nature strip and report them to be picked up.

It's what you do when you are dead broke and don't have a car and can't afford a taxi to take groceries home.

Now I don't look down on people who push trolleys away.

  • +12

A $1 coin is cheaper because you get to keep the coin after returning the cart.

  • +1

Chinese 1 yuan coin also works in the $1 slot

    • But point is how much is it worth as compared to $1 ?

What is its "trolley abandonment value" ?

      • ~A$0.20

        • Thats 6c more than the token!

        • @ATangk: Better off using the Chinese Yuan as coins for the parking meter!

  • Ta op

  • +4

Police tried to charge me last week with "carting counterfeit money" I said "hey this is my first time" he said "OK just don't push it"

  • +15

Funny story, my partner had her handbag pick pocketed by gypsies in Paris. They missed her passport, wallet, phone, but got her coin purse and all that was in it was a Coles one of these things.

Man I wish I saw their face when they opened it up! haha

  • Has anyone seen those RF-activated Wheel Locks to be effective on newer trolleys?

  • You guys are lucky getting it for free or even "discounted".
Both supermarkets in Woden Canberra started using the locks again cos a lot of the derros and kids were just making life hard for them and the area in general with trolleys everywhere. I unluckily didn't have the right coins so the service desk chick sold me one for the normal $1 price :P

    • +1

Does that say something about Canberra. Hurstville in Sydney there's no coins or wheel locks. Maybe we don't have derros.

  • I want a token that has a releaser tool built into it as well.

    • +2

      3D print it.

    • +2

Just get a plastic string like line trimmer string, should be 2mm diameter or bigger, bend it to u shape and insert into the locking mechanism to get it to release the coin. Once released take the coin out and pull one end of the string out to take it out.

  • +2

Buy these. Put one on your keychain. Job done!

    http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/4-pcs-Black-Retractable-Removable-S…

    • +1

$6.00 … Quite expensive even if it works

  • Better deal: Just ask at the service desk at every other Woolies. They're free. The metal ones you had to pay for, but these are the plastic ones. What a rip off!

    • Are these special coins that jam the coin slot when used on trolleys from rival supermarkets?

      Because that would be genius..
