Vivid Wireless 4G Internet: 2nd Month FREE with $199 Modem from Harvey Norman or The Good Guys (Unlimited 4G Data for $89/Month)

170

Decided to try vivid in February and found it great. Streams Netflix nicely and I manage to download ~ 500GB per month. I also managed to get 14 months free via this promo and referrals via a test website I made with google ads (max 12 referral per lifetime of account)

Free one month data credit is applicable to month-to-month plans, for modems bought from retail only. The credit applies only once per new joining customer when you activate your modem for the first time.

Applicable credit will be calculated and applied in month 2 and is based upon the GB plan active at the date the credit is applied. We reserve the right to withdraw this offer at any time.

Edit: bumping old deal as it is older than 6 months

Will bite with 5G, 60 times faster than the NBN…

NBN what a waste of billions on a obsolete technology

    • +1

agreed. No, wait a minute… "nbn" is a waste of billions. NBN was going to be awesome. Before Abbott/Turnbull destroyed it.

      http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/technology/turnbull…

      • +1

Would have been more awesome, but still incredibly expensive.
The NBN corp is badly managed and horribly inefficient, but the basic idea was flawed.
Retro-fitting fibre to existing premises is very expensive, and wireless is improving rapidly. By the time the NBN is finished, fibre-to-the-home will be as economically obsolete as copper is already.

    • Once again, someone that doesn't understand the shared nature of wireless.

    • You seem like a bloke that knows nothing about how the electromagnetic radio frequency spectrum works, Heres a tip, Its finite and subject to interference!

  • I've been with Vivid Wireless prob about 5 months now and it's all great except for my torrents. I know they limit p2p speeds/deprioritise p2p traffic but it's really, really slow. Like, unusable. Most torrents max out at 30kb/s. When I switch to my phone 4G hotspot I get 1.2mb/s down. I just want to know if Vivid really do limit the speeds that much? Obvs phone 4G will be faster than the normal vivid speeds anyway but I didn't realise "deprioritised p2p" meant totally unusable.

Use a VPN and it'll fix that issue.

      • Yeah I've been told that. Any recommendations for a provider?

        • Also consider a Seedbox service. Cheaper, faster, and means all your computer's data isn't slowed by the VPN.

        • I'm far from being an expert but I signed up to that 2 year PIA deal posted on OzB but they've recently changed their IP addresses so it geoblocks Aus sites such as catch up tv etc.

Heard good things about NordVPN, maybe I'll switch to that later on.

        • @unco: I just signed up to NordVPN using coupon code SPRING for 12 month plan came to $45 USD just in case you wanted to switch. Haven't tried it out yet but they have 30 day money back if it doesn't work.

        • +1

@moneymoo: You don't mess around hey! Haha

        • +1

@unco: Ah man I was trying to download some stuff last night it was so freaking slow I had to try something.

        • +1

@moneymoo: Did you end up with some decent speeds?

        • +1

@Ntr0py: on a well-seeded one I'm getting 400kb/s down which is infinitely better than the 3-30kb/s it was.

        • +1

@moneymoo: Spewing… I'm glad you got the speed up but it's still pretty disappointing. Have you tried altering VPN settings, trialed another VPN service?

I understand that they give P2P lowest priority and I can, begrudgingly, understand why but even so, that is really poor.

My max line down speed (ADSL2+) is under 600kB/s. Obviously, P2P is even worse. I'm lucky enough to live in one of the worst suburbs in the country for internet access/speed and I'm only 10 minutes from Perth CBD. No NBN for at least 18 months and that's probably being generous.

Might look into Node1, apparently their performance is a bit like a roller-coaster but it's got to be better than my current connection.

        • +1

@Ntr0py: No I haven't, there doesn't seem to be many settings I'm able to change though. My ADSL had line speed of 3mbps so I'm way better off with Vivid with literally everything else and P2P with VPN is still better than the ADSL was, no NBN where I am for at least 18 months too. I do recommend Vivid if you're in that bad of a situation with your DSL I haven't had any problems with them besides P2P and if you hop around between VPN providers you'll hopefully find something better than Nord.

Edit: I do have Netflix and my household is able to do 2 streams of that at once with Vivid with no problems. Even 2 Plex streams + 1 YouTube stream is usually no problem either.

        • +1

@moneymoo: You're right. It's probably going to be better than what I currently have and I doubt P2P can get much slower… I might give it a bash seeing as I can get $20 off on the modem from TTG on eBay. It will be handy for all the house sitting I do as well, I guess.

As for VPN's, I use Private Internet Access and usually connect through a city in the eastern states with no loss of speed. Maybe you could give them a go on a trial basis, see if it makes a difference for you? I've also heard VyprVPN is really good (especially in terms of privacy/security/data retention/etc.). Good idea to read the fine print in any case.

          Thanks for the info!

I thought this service was speed limited (10/1mbps Unlimited 4G Data Plan) but can't seem to find that detail on the website now.
Does anyone know anything about this? The speed limit is what stopped me switching over previously.

    • +1

Speed limit is fine . Streams Netflix with no probs

Also customer service is great. There was an outage in my area for 2 days due to bad weather last month and they credited me a full month đź‘Ť

      • Thanks unco

    • +1

It is on the plans page, but doesn't exactly jump out seeing speed is high on the most customers requirements / questions. https://www.vividwireless.com.au/plans/unlimited-plan

Not sure why they don't make this clearer to see.

    • +2

Vouch for netflix steaming perfectly on Vivid. Must be prioritised.

      • +1

I've had no problems with any streaming, even the FTA catch up services work well.

        • +1

I must admit streaming Plex from overseas servers are quite slow and unwatchable (From my seedbox) but streams fine from work.

  • Been using this for about 12 months, ditched my 3Mb ADSL service and never looked back.

  • Does anyone know if the modem can be used on other plans later on eg. Optus 4g plans?

    • Nope. It can't.

It's a fully sealed modem. You can't get the SIM out to put anything else.

      • cheers mate

      • Actually, the modem is not fully sealed, and the sim card can be removed. There is a small panel on the rear right side of the device where the sim card is located. As this is a Huawei B315S-607 modem, you may be able to unlock it, but I have yet to investigate further than a cursory glance.

        • +1

          Yeah this is correct.
I'm pretty sure the modem is unlocked, people on whirlpool have put in other sims and reported it's fine.
I can give it a try tonight with my Optus 4G data sim.

        • @unco: I'd love to have some confirmation as to whether it's locked or not, please report back if you try it! :)

        • +2

@Shmexalicious: Just put my Optus 4G data sim in the Vivid modem. Works without needing to change any settings.
          http://www.speedtest.net/result/6357967549.png

Keep in mind the Vivid modem is restricted to 2300mhz only so if you're planning on doing the same, make sure you have that in your area.

        • @unco: awesome thanks mate!

        • @unco: unco, from that speedtest I'm assuming that you were able to get uncapped speeds (ie normal optus 4G speeds) rather than the capped 12Mbps speeds on the vivid plans. Is my assumption correct?

There is a new offer for a 200GB month-to-month optus data sim (4G) which makes me especially keen to combine the optus sim with the vivid modem (unless, of course, there are better 4G modems out there).

        • @bumf: yes, I switched to an Optus data sim and it worked fine in the Vivid modem.
Mind you that was just to test that it works with another sim, I’ve still stuck with the Vivid connection because my household uses around 450GB per month on average.

Check out Whirlpool’s Wireless ISP section. People seem to be pairing the Optus 200GB non speed restricted service with the AC800S and dock which is a CAT9 device capable of 3 carrier aggregation which can give you even higher speeds if you have a decent tower nearby with different bands available.

If I were to go down that route though, I'd probably be happy just sticking it in the Vivid modem since I already have it.

Any good routers to pair with this vivid modem for better wifi coverage?

  • Keep in mind. Bill is paid upfront monthly. They won't refund your money if you cancel your account, unlike other telcos.
"If you terminate the service during a billing period, service charges paid will not be refunded."
    In terms and conditions.

  • I picked this up today.Thanks easternculture.

  • If we buy this from The Good Guys Ebay store will we still be able to get the 1 month of credit?

    • +1

Yes, that's exactly what I did. Got 1 month credit + 1 month from using someone's referral.

  • Is this deal still active?

  • Im trying to join Vivid wireless ISP, but the Referred Friends links given by www.ozbargain.com.au are being rejected "Link has expired; Sorry, the Refer a Friend link you have is no longer valid. Please request your friend to generate a new link."

    • Yeah because that persons account may no longer be in use, therefore their referral link is inactive/expired. Try it again and you’ll most likely find a working one.

      • Ive done 7 codes, all dead! first code that gets DMd to me wins $90.00 credit!

        • Keep trying, I know mine is in there and works haha

  • Unable to send messags: Private message throttled for new user accounts less than 1 day old

    Thanks OzBargain!

  • Im still loving my Vivid 4G wireless unlimited broadband internet, Its $89.00 month to month, No contract.

You can run a speed test on fast.com , its owned by netflix, So you know it hasnt been "tuned" by your ISP

But if NBN or TPG fibre to the basement ever come to my street, I know where Ill be going :)

  • Great news! Im now online with Vivid 4G wireless broadband internet!

The Vivid 4G wireless broadband internet refer a friend promo code, 1 month free unlimited data credit for both referrer and referee worth around $90.00, Ozbargains link generator failed me so I had to look elsewhere to find a 6 digit top bargain promo code.

No old corroded copper telephone line that Telstra refuse to fix as the M.T.M N.B.N will run newer less corroded old copper telephone lines sometime before the sun burns out!

Go Australian politicians! One day this "internet" fade will die out!

  • I have just cancelled my TPG internet which was only giving me ~3 Mbps speed and am planning to go the Vivid route.
How does this work? I buy this modem from TTG say, then how do I use the referral link that I get from Ozbargain? Also does Vivid send me a sim or does it come in the modem?

  • I need to read the comments and wiki :)

  • +1

For those that are wondering, it is possible to get two month of free wireless using the following steps.
    1. Purchase a modem from Harvey Norman or The Good Guys.
    2. Connect to the modem and you will be directed to an activation page.
    3. Sign up a new vivid wireless account.
    4. Enter the referral code under the payment selection page.
    5. On the completion page, You should see a message on the very top that says: "Congratulations, you qualify for the Refer a friend rewards offer and are eligible to receive a Free month's credit on your selected plan. We will apply the credit directly to your account after 21 days." In addition, because you purchase the modem from a store, you should also see 1 month access fee free under Discounts. Taken together, you have a total of 2 month credit.

Note: I was confused about how to input the referral code on OzB because the referral links direct you to a signup page. Its not applicable for those that actually bought a modem because you need an actual seven digit code. Feel free to PM me about the sign up and let me know if you need a referral code!

The Good Guys and Harvey Norman are currently selling for $149!

    • And office works are price matching…

  • +2

Just a little feedback on the service… so far it's been great! steady speeds and short Pings…. definitely recommend it. I would say the referral code which both the referrer and referee each benefit from a free month is the icing on the cake…
