Apple TV 160GB for $129 @ DSE price match with Apple store, DJ's or Myers

60

Most DSE stores have probably been sold out but i got a couple from DJ's at Brisbane City and then also got one more from DJ's at Chermside for my mate. Some one on whirlpool said that they got Apple store in Sydney to price match as well.

FYI IMHO the new apple tv is a load of c*ap.

  • glad i sold mine for $240 a few weeks ago…

  • If you have a 360 or a ps3 is there any reason to buy one of these units if you don't need to sync it to your itunes library?

    • -2

Yes there is. I only had a Wii and currently own n Xbox 360 so cannot speak for the PS3.

The Wii is hopeless for any media so no need to talk about it.*
I tried to play some movies on my Xbox and it was crap. I added it as the extended thingy but could not make it work.

This device is a realy beuty. it will only play up to 720 in certain formats 'after using patchstick'. There is some reading to do about the device before you get it ready. if you rent movies from Itunes then you dont need any modification. if you are on Iinet and some other ISP¨the Itunes contentr is free quota.

The size also is a big plus with the HDMI. I modified mine and added a 320GB sata drive. if you are buying it and interested in this let me know.

By the way, anyone knows where in Sydney we can get one? I have one already but at this price I wont mind getting another one as spare.

You didn't answer the question dude, you just went on a fanboi rant! And seriously, how could you have trouble with XBMC, it's as easy as pie; evidently just not Apple pie! :p

Even a WD TV is a better media player, more features out of the box and no need for mods/hacks/tweaks to make it play full HD content in various codecs/containers; or fooling around with iToons rubbish! ;)

        • +4

I probably did not answer the question but I am not an Apple fanboi at all. I only own an apple tv "apple product" and it is great.

I dont see where I mentionned XBMC and having issues with it? AFAIK XBMC does not work on the xbox 360 and it is all I have "not the original one".

I dont own any other media player so cannot comment on it. I use now my apple tv with Sabnzbd directly on it so I dont need to transfer anything anymore "again not an apple fanboi at all"

Parta only mentionned the 360 and PS3 in his question.

Just cause someone likes a product does not make them love a Brand, seriously StewBalls you're the only one talking like a fanboi, reading what you want from what has been said.
          XBMC doesn't run on 360
360 is a major pain to set up as a MCE extender or just as a front-end to a server or USB drive (I also have one, and it's all set up after many hours work by an above average user like myself) and then it has very limited codec support. I run my 360 as a front end to my server with TVersity on the server to transcode formats, but even that failed to decode a file this week!
AppleTV still has one of the neatest UI's around and with hacks is still one of the best front ends available and at this price is probably unbeatable!
I wouldn't own one, but I'm seriously considering it for my parents who struggle to drive their TV, let alone any other piece of tech…

          • @ESEMCE: Now, in my defence I did read "I tried to play some movies on my Xbox and it was crap." Usually, as with yourself & kar200; when referring to the Xbox360 it gets concatenated to 360; whereas the original just gets the moniker Xbox! ;)

However, I'll cop it sweet for not generalising the info from the ownership comment earlier in that post! :p

        • And we are talking about $129 here - horses for courses

          • @[Deactivated]: Yeah, that's a fair enough point; but add $50 and you've got yourself an Astone AP-300 with a 1.5tb HDD in it from COTD! ;)

        • I 100% agree that there are far better media players out of the box. Apple TV was released in 2007.
ATV I agree isn't for everyone; I would only suggest one for people reasonably technical savvy.

          To customize a stock standard ATV to run XBMC software can be done in 5 minutes;

          1) Download the free USB image creator from http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/ and load the image on a USB stick (2 minutes)
          2) Plug USB stick in back of ATV and reboot
          3) Wait 3 minutes;

You now should have a new launcher menu option on your ATV named downloads.
Select XBMC and it starts downloading a 50MB file and you are done.

If you want to reset your ATV back to stock standard, there is a menu option to do just this. ATV ships with a separate recovery partition to restore the ATV to original condition.

As i've said in the other ATV topic on ozbargain, you can still get great mileage from the ATV by installing a broadcom media processor chip BCM70012/BCM70015 that sells for about $30-40 delivered. This brings ATV in line with other true HD media players. $129 + 40 = $170

One feature on the stock standard ATV I like that doesn't seem available on other media players is the fact that you can control the device remotely using an iPhone or IPOD touch. This is particularly handy when searching youtube; as you can leverage the iphone/touch screen virtual keyboard to quickly type in band names / songs etc; It sure beats leveraging conventional remote control.

          • @mshanann: Hey Mshannon, where do you get the BCM70012/BCM70015 from? I have been looking for one since a while but cannot get it lower than 60 anywhere.

          • @mshanann: You make good points, but I'm firmly in the "I want it to work out of the box" camp nowadays! I especially don't wanna pay more for bits to make a device merely approach the functionality of its peers! The ATV might seem a good deal for those interested in playing with it; but not me, I'm a pragmatist! ;)

Whilst I am technically competent; I simply no longer have the time or patience to hack, mod or tweak stuff to make it do what I want! I source any device by feature/price, and demand it works as advertised, or it gets returned as NFFP! (I'm the FT poster boy)

I also honestly can't be bothered with playing funny buggers with phones or gadgets. My phone gets used as a phone, my iPod gets used for music/audiobooks; and my PC gets used; not surprisingly; mostly as a PC! Sorry if I sound like I'm self-important here, but I'm just too busy! :p

  • you can surf the web with a few mods

  • +1

ps3 is way better than this, but you pay for what you get, plays all HD content including 1080p in bluray or vob, avi, mpg etc format from my NAS and plays great. If the ps3 died tomorrow id get another and not waste my money on this item. For those wanting to get into the market cheap, then the Appletv is great. You can hack it to play ALOT of other formats as well without needing to open it, check http://www.appletvhacks.net/ . You dont need to open it either and it doesnt void warranty.

If you dont require a HDD and just want to stream then get the newer Appletv for the same price without a HDD inside, it just streams content straight from itunes. http://www.apple.com/au/appletv/

  • apples and oranges (sony)…..

$120 item vs a few hundred dollar gaming machine..

looks good, if you can get one

    • Hence why I didnt mention the PS3 gaming ability. Why by two seperate items when you can buy an all in one that does everything better.

  • Does anyone have a copy of a receipt, or a copy of the website with that price? It's been removed now.

  • Nice Deal.

Thanks for posting it…. Many DSE stores in Bris have already run out however these are available online with Apple for the same price.. only catch is up to 4 weeks delivery which is free.

  • is this only for Bris? I'm in Sydney btw, DSE website doesn't have it. apple online store is selling it for $199

  • -1

This would be a great deal once you put Boxee/XBMC on it. Much nicer than any other sub $200 media player. ( sorry WDTV fans!)

    • +1

Its not better than WDTV Live. It cannot do 1080 native output where as WDTV live can and they are about $189 from ebay. 100% agree that XBMC is much better than WDTV interface as I use XBMC on an Acer Revo for 1080 playback. I understand the only way to get 1080 output of of the AppleTV is to completely wipe the OS and install XBMC Live CD and do some major mucking around.

      • see forum.xbmc.org

        you can download a ubuntu image designed for ATV directly from the forum site; it can run directly from a 4GB usb stick plugged in to the USB port; You can also actually run both the native tiger OS and ubuntu as well from the same apple hard drive;

you would need to add the broadcom chip though

  • Anybody have a copy of the receipt since it is no longer on DSE online.

  • Anyone found any in melbourne? before i head out in search. Sounds like a good deal, jianye is right $199.0 from apple online.
Markybee, where did you see it for the same price (online with Apple)? Did you go to the US store which sells the new Apple TV for $99.00 (australian apple store (129.00 I think)).

    • I think they are getting confused with the new Apple TV which is $129 online in Aust, there are none in clearance or refurb.

I managed to get one by going to local DS store, they looked up on their computer who nearby had one (Its got more info than DS online) and rang thru to a newcastle store (Glendale) and had them put one aside. As my son was visiting Newcastle it was worthwhile doing. Otherwise not worth the trip.

But the tactic might help others….

        +1
This is a tactic I use frequently, not just with DS, but most chain stores…and it rarely fails to work! :)

Remember though, it's all in how you approach the staff member…you'll catch more flies with honey… ;)

    • ozf1 disregard my post. After getting info from my wife who called the apple store while I was at work and getting her to buy the black one from apple for $129, as soon as I got home from work I reviewed it and it really isnt that flash.Fortunately I cancelled the order.

Go and look at catch of the day. They have a great asetone-300 with 1.5tb for 199……

  • just forget apple tv all together people… and look for some real media player like the asrock ion
    http://www.asrock.com/nettop/index.asp

  • Hey I just realized Apple TV does not have an actual TV tuner!, You can connect it to a TV though. Or you have to buy something like elgato eye TV hardware and software… forget it!

    • -1

Where exactly have you been living for the past 4 years that you don't know what an appletv is?
Do you know what an ipod is?, no it doesn't include a pod…..

      • Oh snap, that cutting fanboi wit! :p

        • Now what was that about honey …. LOL

  • Hey macfanboy, good on ya! I've been living under a rock with my macbookpro (pre unibody- (isn't that sooo retro uber cool)) and macmini, using el gato eye TV Hybrid. As you would obviously know, I can convert my old VHS to digital by using the Hybrid (yes VHS, look it up in google, it used to be a pre digital era video platform, it uses something called "tape"). You can record or as we used to say "tape" video and audio from your TV signal and also some other VHS if they didn't have copyright protection, I know, even in those days we had that copy protection technology, no "mactheripper" back in those days.

By the way I said "tuner" not that it doesn't actually come with a TV (display/screen).

And, No, tell me what is an ipod, and why is it call an ipod? let me guess… "open the pod bay door HAL!"

P.S. Relax and go have an Apple, they are good for you, one of them a day will keep the doctors away!

  • thanks for receipt!
