Samsung S34E790C 34" LED LCD Curved Monitor $840 @ Futu Online eBay

CRACKA20

Hi,

I've been looking for a good 34 inch monitor but I'm such an amateur and don't really know much about them.
This seems like a good deal.
Can anyone confirm whether it is? I'm not using it for gaming, it'll be for work..I've heard curved isn't great, but it looks cool.
Feel free to comment and let me know if this is worthwhile.. Its cheaper than anywhere i can find on staticice.

Promo code suggests you should give this deal a 2nd thought.

I feel like you'd want either full UHD, G-Sync/Freesync or 120+hz for $840 and this monitor has none of those

    • +6

He said he wants it for work, how does any of that help?

    • +2

      This monitor is 21:9 ratio 34" 3440 x 1440 which is higher than 2k. It's also curved.

Once you go to ultrawide you cannot go back.

LG 34" Owner here, I do a mix of gaming and work on mine, mostly gaming.

Pity you aren't using it for gaming because gaming is amazing on these.

They'd still be great for work, but I feel a multi monitor setup might be better for productivity.

I second this guy. 21:9 on gaming is much more immersive, esp when you play the witcher etc

        • I'd agree except this seems to lack Freesync or G-sync so it's gonna lose out for gaming, great for everything else though!

I like having one monitor and it is pretty much more for the looks on my desk as well.
I haven't gamed in ages and I don't think there's anything decent that'll run on my surface pro 3.
I'm running a 27 inch at the moment.. which is more than sufficient, but looking to upgrade as I can claim it as a tax deduction.
who knows? maybe I'll find the time to get back into gaming! what sort of price should I be aiming for a 34" if its just for business purposes?

        • I bought one of these on the last 20% eBay deal and am mostly using it for gaming but also for software development on my Surface Pro 4. It works perfectly and love having 2 applications open side by side on the same screen. I'm used to having 2x24" which is nearly identical to this.

You won't find a 34" (at this resolution) for cheaper. There are 2560x1080 but I definitely won't recommend it if you are going to use it for work

        • @fxxxit:

Can I ask why you wouldn't use that res for work purposes?

I mainly use my computer for Word etc. What's so bad about 2560x1080?

          Thanks

      • but if the ATO asks, it's 95% for work, 5% personal lol

  • Depends on what kind of work you are doing, as long as it doesn't require super accurate colours or drawing lines (the curve of the screen can make straight lines appear curved) then it's great for work due to how much screen real estate you have.

I just need it to to review documents side by side…. boring work, and I guess I'm hoping this monitor will make me feel better about doing such boring work hahaha

      • I used one of these at work the other day for that purpose. It's good. But in all honesty, I found dual screens to be far more effective/efficient for some reason.

    VA….yea no thx.

    • Advice yeah no thanks.

haha that looks awesome! might have to make it vertical to get a good close up of some axe wounds!

      • LOL

Haha i have the same wallpaper!

  • Something to consider is two of these https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/310863

    • Thanks! I failed to mention that I'm running a Samsung S27B350 at the moment, so I'm just looking to upgrade this to a 34".. anything less I think wouldn't make much difference. Then pass this one to my wife, and her 24 inch to my parents.

Perhaps its worth getting a secondary 27" monitor.

The 34" if split in half is two 17" monitors, so you have 17" of space per task if doing 2 tasks. Whereas with dual 27" you get that much per task. Throw in a cheap monitor mount for them and you're set. Would save a lot of money, but if you want a awesome looking monitor with high resoultion you can't go past the Samsung 21:9.

The 34" 21:9 ultrawide is also the same height as the 27" 16:9, just wider.

  • Looks like a well reviewed monitor that has exceptional image quality due to it's high contrast VA panel with the only reservation being price which is a criticism all 21:9 monitors.

I can recommend ultra widescreen 21:9 for working on as I'm typing this post while I watch UFC on a 21:9 widescreen now. A tip is to move the taskbar to the left or right of the screen to gain additional vertical space but you are getting the height of a 29" widescreen monitor in any case.

You can play games on it provided you use V-sync for 60 FPS or alternatively put up with lower game image quality due to screen tearing (this is what G-sync / Freesync fixes).

What hasn't been mentioned is how glorious 21:9 movies look on ultrawide monitors.

I would attempt to find a normal widescreen monitor that is 1/3 the price of this so you can also consider a triple monitor setup as well for the same price althiough obviously only if you can drive 3 monitors since I'm not sure if you can do this using a Surface).

    • I have seen that you can drive 3 monitors with the surface pro 3 but I just don't have the desk space. Even now, I've got the surface pro next to me, facing me, but i prefer to have everything on one screen. Its not like i have tons of parameters to monitor all at once.
Thanks for your thoughts on the monitor though! I might give it a miss this time, as it seems like overkill for me… plus I haven't even seen one in real life, so I'll head down to JB/HN or something to see what they actually look like.

cant believe how expensive monitors are compared to larger TV's. For something like this I would have thought around $500 would be acceptable, not $800.

    • +1

Yes, but the difference between a monitor and a TV is significant:
      - monitors have better resolution at this size. It's rare to find a TV that has higher than HD at this size
      - response time is significantly slower on a TV. Even top of the line TVs have a response time 10 times that of monitors

      • +1

Also, monitors are designed to display sRGB whilst TVs are designed to display BT.709. Besides slightly different Gamma, sRGB range for colour is 0-255 (ie. 8 bit), whilst for BT.709, 16-235 (ie. 7.78 bit). JPG, PNG and GIF images for computer consumption, such as web-pages, are stored for sRGB bit depths, and when displayed on TV will be shown with lower effective accuracy after transformation.

  • 60hz, give it a miss
you want 120-144hz for a good gaming monitor

saying that, if your PC cannot pump out 120-144fps, go this
