CRACKA20

Descent router for a descent price with 20% off and $30 ASUS EOFY Cashback. Must be nearly the cheapest its ever been I don't think I've seen this router sub-$300. With extra 1.3% Cashrewards its VERY close.

New Calculation based on Futu eBay Listing:
$336 (after 20% off eBay) - $4.37 (CashRewards 1.3%) - $30 (ASUS EOFY EFTPOS Offer) = $301.63

(thanks @Coley for the price drop heads-up on the Futu Store)

Previously posted with Sydney Tech, Futu now the cheapest. Old link and calculation below:

If my calculations are correct: $340 (after 20% off eBay) - $4.42 (CashRewards 1.3%) - $30 (ASUS EOFY EFTPOS Offer) = $305.58

The Netgear R9000 AC7200 is also going for a pretty good price given how new it is and its specs:

Pretty high-end routers and reviews say that AC88U are rock solid. Have AC87U myself and with Merlin it seems to be very solid already; contemplating an upgrade to the AC88u but current one performs pretty well already so haven't made up my mind. Hopefully this post helps someone.

PS: No it doesn't have an in-built modem for those wondering. It does however connect and authenticate depending on what kind of connection you have. Google is your friend if you are not sure and there has been heaps of discussions previously even on OZB.

  • Nice i'd be all over this if i didn't have a Asus AC68U already.

my problem is getting cheap pci cards for the pc that keep with with the routers and if i go usb that uses the pc cpu so slows cpu down.

i get a feeling all these big numbers is to sell more routers rather than users getting real world throughput improvements.

at the. moment asus are the only AC cards with decent antennas and then there is the issue of 64 bit win 10 drivers to get full throughput.

      • I think reliability is a big thing; the numbers now go all the way up to AC7200 apparently but indeed the real throughput isn't an increase they are simply adding the numbers together although there is a short range wifi that is much faster (but too short to be practical to many people).

I love the reliability of the AC87u that I have, and the AC88u is suppose to be a lot more reliable than my ac87u.

  • Last year I bought a 68u and they sent me an 88u (vendor will remain undisclosed). Running my 88u with stock firmware and can confirm no issue thus far. Would recommend.

Edit: I replaced my much loved 56u running padavans custom firmware.

    • Last year, I bought 1 dell 37" monitor and they've sent me 2 :)

      • Did you return it or sell the extra?

      • Score!

  • Got all excited for a second thinking this was the modem included version. Then I found out it wasn't, then I read the OP and read that it wasn't. Could have saved a few minutes of my day reading that first :)

    Good deal none the less.

  • This is a fantastic router for anyone considering family internet protection.

After reviewing lots of options, I bought an Asus AC88U for Merlin's third party DDWRT based firmware. It has one key feature I have been looking for in a router - Per device DNS settings. With the additional features that have been added to the Merlin third party firmware, I have set up OpenDNS Family DNS servers as the default DNS service for all devices on my network. That means the kids have a level of standard protection when surfing the net on any connected device regardless of device type or operating system (its all centrally managed at the router). Because it's the default DNS setting, this protection extends to other kids devices who join my wifi when they come over. Of course, I have exceptions for the grown ups computers to allow unrestricted internet access.

I have also found the streaming media and gaming restriction feature to be pretty effective for blocking access to games and youtube during the school week.

    • Works until the kids discover proxy servers and portable apps.

  • Was below $300 6 months ago and that was with a 10% off code.
