    pffffff!!

  • -1

Look on the bright side guys. For the sake of $50 you would have…

    1. Spent 1 hour of today trying to register and associated BS.
    2. Spent 1 hour screwing around with your mobile device to buy something on Friday.

So the avg wage of $25 per hour you could have worked 2 hours and made the $50 back.

    • You forgot the additional 1-5 hours needed to chase down your cash back when PayPal doesn't pay up on time (as was the case for the $20 promo that ran with stores such as DX earlier in the year).

    • +4

The registrations ran out within 10min. So not really 1 hour, don't know what "associated BS" entails…
      Took me 5mins.
1 hour of "screwing around" shopping for something? Most people enjoy shopping for one thing, and i doubt it's going to be long process for most people to find something they want to buy. I already know what i want to buy, and i've got numerous alternatives.

Also, who can just ring up their work and get an extra 2 hour shift to make the $50?

Reality:- 5 mins spent registering. 5-10 leisurely mins spent shopping for something. $50 additional funds i normally wouldn't have.

That's some seriously skewed logic you've come up with in order to "look on the bright side". Each to their own i guess.

I have lodged an official complaint to ebay

I have tried 10-12 times to get registered (from different browser etc)
But failed to do so - error message

    "Server Error in '/happyhour' Application.
Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that <machineKey> configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster."

    • Good luck with that hey. Ebay are hopeless at getting back to you.

    • I asked Ebay and they said it was to do with Paypal, not with them so directed me to Paypal.

  • Missed out here too!
Was attempting as soon as the clock ticked over to 00.
First the page was refreshing to itself, and whent no where for the first 3 minutes.
then it finally went to the registration page.
Had about 30 go’s at then and kept getting back errors.

Finally got on about 12:08 and missed out.

    unless.

    • unless Homer Simpson helps you out with your typo? :P

Anyone figured out yet if 5 x $20 itunes cards in 1 purchase qualifies? It says "one purchase" so I imagine so, but there's a few people saying it's only 1 item not quantities.

    • If the auction is for 5x$20 itunes cards then I would assume it is one transaction and you would get 50% back. But if there was someone selling $20 itunes cards individually and you bought 5 at once, I think you might only get $10 back (half of the first one). Not 100% certain but I'd go for the first option to be safe.

for those who missed out, open this link to make urself feel better

    https://www.paypal-apac.com/happyhour/Accepted.aspx

    • Nice. Fill that page out with Firebug and there's your "proof" that you received your offer confirmation. Make your purchase and complain to eBay/PayPal later on…

  • Damn… First time I tried.. it crashed… Tried again, and then it went to the success screen, but it didn't show my username/paypal email. I then tried again, and it said their records showed that I already entered.

I then clicked the link posted above, about the success page, or something, and it says Congratiulations… and shows my username and email!

    However - no SMS… no email. :(

So I have NO idea if I was successfull or not.

    • If you gave us your mobile phone number, you’ll receive a confirmation and reminder SMS on Friday morning.

  • Had register mine. Got the confirmation.

  • OMFG guys, seriously? It was an OFFER, not a right. If you missed out, it's too bad. If it says registration opens at 12pm, then you should be at your PC at 11.55, waiting for it.
Like some of the guys have said, 5000 places open to 3 million people, so you had a 1 IN 600 chance to get in, and if you didn't, that's too bad. And it's just 50 bucks.

    • +9

      "it’s just 50 bucks"

      Are you serious?
This is Ozbargain, we love a free $50.
Why do you even come here if you yourself don't want $50 for free?

      • +4

It's not $50 free, more so a SAVING of up to $50. You still have to spend money and I think a lot of people signing up for this offer (myself included) would of had no intention of actually buying anything from ebay.

It's a bit like the 4c a litre off fuel and then if you spend over $2 instore you get an extra 2c a litre off. No 'free money' involved at all.

  • Thanks blaze. It's just my luck. I took up your great advise, and careless me made the same bl…y mistake again. So I can really forget it now. So much for getting through, and first timer luck

  • Any small item to buy from eBay to test my account, guys? I got one spot in the 5,000, but i have never bought anything with my eBay account, so i think it is not fully activated yet. I had 4 browser windows up at 11.59pm, and text files previously prepared with all details so I could accurately copy/paste the IDs & details in quickly.

There were server errors etc, so I just kept refreshing. After a number of redirects back to the first page, I finally got the first ID approved at about 12:02. It took me another 4-5 mins to get the second ID through, but after that the server was so laggy that the 3rd and 4th IDs missed out.

When there are deals like this, you must be prepared - just like a Boy Scout.

    • You did 4 accounts, so that is 3 other people who missed out because you decided to be greedy.

      • +7

He has 4 accounts but only got 2 in. So only 1 other person missed out.

While you're at it, take it out on one of the posters above who mistyped their details and also caused people to miss out!

      • LOL - no need to be bitter! The way these draws work is that every entry gets an equal chance, just like a lottery.

I bought 4 tickets in the lottery and won with 2. Because of the way random chance works, and the numerous server glitches, each of my attempts had the EXACT same chance of being successful as your did.

The fact that I was successful with a second ID didn't decrease your chances AT ALL.

        • +1

It wasn't random. It was the first 5000. The fastest users with the best connections to the servers got in.

          • @Wormetti: i was on a usb mobile broadband connection and a 2001 celeron powered laptop using internet explorer 6

            lolz

        • … are you saying you get the $50 off or that you got free entries into the draw? :P

    • Nice prep. I did the same, but only with my 1 account. After about 30 refreshes of the page, it finally went through…

  • Someone reminded me around 12.06PM, and I reluctantly tried with Success!!
    Now, what to buy ?
It's an irony that I have got things up for sale in Ebay, yet I need to buy something to get the $50

    • haha I have no idea what to buy either! might just ask some friends what they want since I really don't need anything…

      • Hey - You could auction off the discount… on eBay ROFL!!

        • I'll buy it with my discount tomorrow.

          • @Josh81: Buying a discount with a discount?

            /headache.

  • +4

I'm going to curse all those greedy people registered with more than one account. Anyone interest to join?
(I missed mine at 12:01 even tho I clicked confirm, tried a few times, finally went through but said i missed)

  • do you guys think that using a ipod touch will work

    • Not now, because the registrations closed 32 mins ago, and were all gone about 50 mins before that anyway.

      • i already made it for the registration but i'm wondering if i could use it to buy something on friday because i want to know if it qualifies as a mobile phone

      • Not now

I think Issh is referring to the ipod touch as being a suitable mobile device to comply with the promo requirements.

I don't know how they will tell what device you use to buy and subsequently pay with. If you have a windows mobile phone, as I do, I will have to use the browser to buy and pay. To that end, I can't see how ebay/paypal will be able to tell whether I've use Internet explorer on my mobile or Internet explorer on my desktop, or Internet explorer on my laptop using the data connection from my phone!

        • Because the browser on your phone will report to ebay that it is a mobile based browser

    • i would say yes. your ipod touch would identify as a mobile device (because, well, it is) and especially if you're running the ebay.com.au iOS app, i'd see no reason why it wouldn't work.

it works the same on your desktop/laptop computer by simply typing

    in your browser

    cheers

    • The only thing I am not sure about is condition number three - paying for it with Paypal via a mobile phone

3 - paid with the Happy Hour 50% Off Prize Major Prize Winner’s PayPal account (that was submitted on the Registration Form) through a mobile phone.

      • It is a marketing exercise. I don't see why they won't accept your payment.

And it is easy to say that I used the mobile phone as my wireless modem, and made the purchase using my laptop.

        • Its the giving the refund three weeks later bit, that I am worried about

    • By using the browser ID they can tell if you are using a PC or mobile device

      • Can you suggest any easy way to run a mobile browser on a Windows or Linux PC?

        • use safari
          access the developer tools
and then search for develop on menu toolbar
then user agent then choose iPhone
it works it you go on ebay because when you type ebay.com.au it redirects you to the mobile one

but i'm not 100% sure it'll work for this promotion

        • google is your friend

          http://techie-buzz.com/tips-and-tricks/emulate-mobile-browse…

          for firefox.

if you done it correctly, then you should be able to type in www.ebay.com.au ( or other site with dedicated mobile pages), but the browse will be direct to and load up as the mobile site equivalent.

  • Using "successful" to mean "in first 5000 registrants" here:

I hit the register button about 12:02 without a mobile number, and no confirmation screen (whether successful or unsuccessful) ever loaded. A few minutes later I got sick of waiting for it to load and tried entering my details again, and it said I'd already entered. I have no idea whether I was successful or not due to there being no confirmation email, and Paypal is being really unhelpful when I emailed them to try and find out:

    • first person who replied copied and pasted the T&C and told me the "you've already entered" page would tell me whether I was successful or not (it doesn't, I checked with someone I know was successful and someone I know wasn't)
    • second person said I was successful and that's why I couldn't enter again
    • third person said that if I didn't get a confirmation email I wasn't successful (as far as I know and according to the T&C there wouldn't have been any confirmation email anyway)

How can I get them to just check their database and tell me? -_-

    • And just got a fourth person replying: they said if I didn't get an "instant confirmation" then I wasn't included - I'm pretty sure that's not how it works!

      • I had the exact same thing happen, no confirmation of either being successful or not, just that I had already entered. Contacted eBay and was told to contact Paypal. Paypal basically said you've registered and I can't tell you whether you were one of the successful 5000 or not but you've been entered into the draw.

I'll wait and see whether I get a message on Friday morning as it should have gotten in before the 5000 ran out but I'm disappointed in that they can't send out a confirmation email or even tell me if I was successful or not.

        • I hit the register button at 12:02 and it was loading for the next five minutes until I gave up and tried to do it again (which is when it said I already entered), so I have no idea whether I got in or not - it could have gone through at any time after I hit the button. And since I didn't put in my mobile number (didn't think it was necessary), I won't know if I got it or not until I see whether I get a cashback :( I'm just going to buy something I would have bought anyway.

  • +1

How funny. I only just received the email about this promotion at 12:30pm today, after the special has already finished. If I wasn't an Ozbargainer I would of missed out. Ozbargain is great !

  • I went through to Paypal's site and entered all my details, however after submitting the registration form it redirected me to https://www.paypal-apac.com/happyhour/Accepted.aspx, but I was greeted with some "404 error" stating the page was not available.

I then tried to register again but it says that my details are already registered.

So can I assume that I have made it through and was the first 5000 participate?

This all happened around 12:05pm I think.

  • Anyone get a confirmation EMAIL?

    • WINNERS
11.The first 5,000 Entrants to enter the Promotion in accordance with these Terms & Conditions will be the Happy Hour 50% Off winners ("Happy Hour 50% Off Winners") (Happy Hour 50% Off Prize is defined below). Entrants will be notified if they are Happy Hour 50% Off Winners through:
a.an instant confirmation page on the Website stating that they were one of the first 5,000 Entrants to enter the Promotion; and
b.a SMS at 8am AEST on 24 September 2010 to the mobile phone number registered by the Happy Hour 50% Off Winners on the Registration Form providing details of the Happy Hour 50% Off Prize

so the only way to confirm is if you had the confirmation page after the registration
      and also
to wait until friday morning for the text message

  • So does that mean I can purchase only ONE item to get the 50% off. Or can I purchase many items from the same person and pay in one transaction to get the 50% off ?

    I couldn't find this info

  • I registered fine after a couple of minutes using Chrome.
As soon as the timer ran out the registration button appeared, but clicking it gave me no response so I went to grab my android phone (HTC Desire) and tried that but couldn't find the page quick enough so I gave up and went back to the PC, by which time the registration link directed me to the signup page and all was fine.

Now to find something I actually want….

I'm surprised to hear people couldn't get on. I accessed the promo site with my samsung galaxy at 12:03 and was registered first go and had confirmation on screen at 12:05. Maybe its because I was on a mobile. I was shocked at how quick and easy it was.

    • I registered on my iPhone at 12.00pm and dunt have a prob either….

      • Hmm … maybe there was a different server for mobile browsing …

  • Well I've asked via Twitter if we can purchase from international sellers as long as we do so via ebay.com.au. Not really expecting a reply though :D If anyone gets official word, please let us know.

  • I went through the registration process only to find that I'm not eligible. May because I chose "Other" for my type of phone.

    • No, it's certainly not the reason why. It's because the limit of people who could sign up to this offer has been reached.

    • Are you serious? I chose other and it said "congratulations" but if I chose other am I not eligible? Where does it specify that? Thanks.

      • If it said congratulations and you were told you're eligible for the discount, then you are eligible for it.

    • "Other" still let you register.

  • couldnt even get on. accessed it from uni. maybe that was my problem.
sigh ebay. 5000 users aint alot you know.

I sat on the site from 11:55am, checking every couple of minutes. Waited until the counter got down to zero, and…. nothing happened. So I refreshed the site, and the counter was still there, however it read as 1 day, 1 hour, 1 minute for about a minute. Frustrated, I refreshed the site again and suddenly saw the register button. So I pressed it, and waited for it to load. And waited. And waited. Another minute, I open up a second window and hit the button again. And waited. And waited. With both windows still loaded, I grabbed my iPhone and headed to the site. It managed to get straight through, but by then I'd missed out. I really wouldn't have minded if I had forgotten about the deal and had missed out on it like that. What annoys me the most was that I was on the correct site at the correct time and I missed out because their site is crap. Not a good way to promote your internet-based business, that's for sure….

To everyone who's been saying we shouldn't complain, I'm sure you'd be singing a different tune had you also missed out on the deal.

Okay, I've had my rant. I've almost dealt with missing out on GoW PS3 1, 2 & 3 for $50… sigh

      Anyone can help?
      Thanks.

I just purchased something using ebay mobile site,
just follow the instructions to checkout and it will take you to the paypal mobile website. Its all pretty
      simple.

I did do all that with my desktop PC using firefox, but accessed the mobile version of ebay and paypal website, but it should be the same for mobile devices

      • thank you
