Is it secure to make purchases online using a mobile?

    • Wouldn't be any less secure then using your home network I wouldn't imagine. The amount of open wifi or poorly encrypted wifi networks is crazy. Plus you can nearly always bet the router admin & pass is the default.

Interested to know if the ipad ebay app is counted as 'mobile'.

Now all I need to do is figure out what I want to buy!

      • Ipad qualifies! Press the 'get started' link.

        • Good ipad, earning it's keep :D

    • I've done it quite a few times with no problems at all. I'll definitely be taking note of this one!

  • I know it says ebay.com.AU but does anyone know if you can buy items not in Australia and have them count?

    • I think you could - and, at the very least, via ebay.com.au for international sellers.

      • I would also assume so given you can buy any item through ebay.com.au as long as the seller ships to where you live, but would be nice if they clarified it.

    • You stay on eBay.com.au when you browse for international goods, so I don't see why not!

    • +3

I wouldn't define is as "competition" since it IS available to first 5,000 who register. Is not too different from having a sale and having only 5,000 units in stock — the bargain is available to the first 5,000 who get to it.

      • +4

I believe the 4999 first subscribers would be people from ozbargain…

        • -1

          probably right! haha

        • We already give our credit card details, address and phone number to paypal.

    • It's the same with discount coupons for the first 1,000, or an item where the company only has 100 of them. it's a bargain.

    • "eBay.com.au User ID"

Aren't all ebay IDs the same? What if I originally signed up via the .com site?

  • Good deal, now if only I can remember to do this next Wednesday.

    • It's confusing. Register wednesday, buy friday between 12 and 1?

  • "maximum refund of $50"
    is still good :)

  • Wow, just got this in the email about 7 minutes ago, news sure travels fast here…

  • I can get Apple care for our iPhones, buy 1 take 1! Now, just need to get into that 5,000.

    • Huh?

      • +1

Apple Care is the extended warranty by Apple which cost 100 dollars for iPhone if I'm not mistaken. I think he meant "buy one get one free"

By the way I suspect this isn't quite right because if you are buying two then you would pay 200 dollars and only get 50 dollars maximum refund in this promotion. Also can you buy Apple Care on ebay?

        • You can buy it, but if Apple asks for proof of purchase in the event that you make an AppleCare claim, I don't know if an eBay confirmation will cut the mustard.

        • Yes you can buy them on eBay, I bought them last time for the 3GS and it costs ~$50 :)

  • So where do we register?

    • On the linked site, in 6 days, 25 minutes.

  • the ebay app for Android must be new.
i tried searching for it in the market 2 weeks ago and
found nothing. i hope it works well.

    • Not new at all, I've had it for 2 months, and it has been around much longer.

  • For just ONE item. So you can't buy 5x$20 of stuff.

    • -5

yeah it sucks, i think ebay only honors 1 x item, theres no way in hell i will buy a single item higher than $100 on ebay…

      • +1

Why not? It's only gonna cost you $50 in the end.

Awesome, but the website will be swamped and probably not load… and then I'll be 5001 lol

  • In that case I will be 5002.

  • My moby doesn't do the interweb ;(

I steadfastly refuse to update it too, much to the embarrassment of my teenage daughter (Yah, so awkward/2007 Dad)
So any way to use this without using a phone?
I have mobile broadband with a phone number on my netbook - any use?

  • How exactly do they know that you're using a mobile to access ebay?

    • the app

    • +1

      The browser you use

      • anthony's right basically the browser information you giveaway, mobiles all use browsers just like computers do. you can download plug-ins/tools for your browser to spoof where it's coming from. but won't point out anything as it's unfair lol

  • if you are using windows mobile, would it be valid from accessing via: http://m.ebay.com.au/ ?

If so, could you use any computer and purchase via that link and it would think that it was a mobile transaction?

  • -8

I don't have a gay phone, only a windows mobile one. Yet it's not listed?

    • +1

How do you know your phone is not gay ?

      • +2

Shhh, it may not have come out yet.
Rumored to have been seen in Oxford st with other like minded-phones but they are just "friends"

        • lol awesome

      • Like I said, it's a windows mobile phone. Read above.

        • +1

so your homophobic about phones? you do know you can browse the web on a windows mobile phone

  • -2

Ya I do, however this is paypal trying to get the sheep (people that buy iphones because their friends have one) to get their app. Good deal for a one off, still it's a marketing scam and will probably cost you in the future.

    • Dont disagree with that!

  • Would I still be eligible if I don't have the ebay app on my phone but use m.ebay.com.au instead?

    • +1

yes. they never said use mobile via mobile network.

    • +1

The terms and conditions clearly say that you can either use the Ebay Inc app OR buy through the website on your mobile phone.

      • +1

Thanks. Now the hard part of choosing what I actually need…

  • do we have to register from our mobiles or can we register on a computer and then make a purchase using mobile..?
    *confused

  • +1

Will purchase made on a computer via http://m.ebay.com.au/ work? How do they tell whether you used a mobile?

    • +1

the information sent will state what browser etc is being used and they can find out if it is a mobile or not.

      • yup they can, but just spoof your browser/user agent details and you'll be fine > search for one based on your o/s and browser combo.

    • you can actually use safari, access the developer options and tell it to act as if it's an iphone running safari. all sites load as mobile versions…could work??

      • it would almost certainly work.

  • Looks like it's finally time to buy that second PS3 controller I've been waiting for!

    • Read my mind! Though I just got my PS3 today…

  • -3

    just not worth the trouble….

  • +4

I think I'm going to get PlayStation Move, but because all the ones on eBay at the moment are around $110-120 (granted, it DID only come out today), hopefully I'll be able to get a $100 voucher to JB/EB/Big W from eBay, get the 50% refund on whatever I pay, and get Move on the gift card from the store.

Just thought I'd post this in case anybody else couldn't think of what to buy with it. You could get iTunes or anything for 50% off which is nice.

  • +3

Do you have to register by mobile or can you register on computer and then use your mobile to buy on the day?

    • +1

      my question exactly

    • Yes they need to clarify that.

  • Woot I can get Halo Reach for about $27 then! +ve from me

  • So do u have to buy an item at a certain time or can I buy something tmro & pay for it within those dates??

  • I guess that's what will happen:
even if you register on the required day (between 12 noon Wednesday 22nd and 12 noon Thursday 23rd September AEST), on the day when you have to make a purchase within just one hour (24 September between 12 noon to 1pm) the website will be overloaded, especially when trying to get there from mobile phone, and then you end up with nothing.

  • Anyone have the useragent string for say opera mini or whatever browser phones use? I assume useragent + m.ebay should work :o

  • I just bought an Asus Monitor, yesterday then I saw this in my inbox today was sooo annoyed! Oh well… bargain hunting time on eBay… I know I need a micro USB bluetooth module… @$1… what else hmm…

  • let say if u buy n item cost 120$… does paypal refund 50% back? or does it only refund any item below or = 100$ ?

    • Maximum refund is $50. Anything from $100 to infinity will get you a refund of $50.

  • +3

You need to register in the first 5000 on Wed.

You then need to buy AND PAY for something on eBay via your mobile on Fri between 12-1.

They will then let you know 3 weeks later whether you have met their various criteria, including making the purchase correctly in time and recognised to be a mobile purchase. If not then bad luck you pay the full price.

  • -1

Get a friend to "sell" an item for $100, collect the $50 paycheck, thanks for the free money ebay!

    • +1

And find out 3 weeks later that they are not eligible for the $50. ;-)
      5% Ebay fees + 3% paypal? Ouch

      • $8 is worth the risk

  • +1

It's exciting to see stuff like this before the actual day. But also a disappointment on the day itself as most people won't be getting this.

With Ebay you are not only compeating with the Ozbargain members. It's every internet users out there. Nevertheless Good Luck to everyone.

  • Got to think of something to buy…hmm gift cards sounds like a good idea…

  • Do I have to pay at the same time I buy it or can I wait 2-3 days before paying and still get the $50 back?

    • According to the Terms and Conditions, yeah you have to buy and pay in that time period.

  • .

  • Alright, sweet. Time to buy SC2 for $40 hehe…

    • I was also thinking that…

  • the ebay app on an Ipod touch would count as a mobile purchase if the ipad qualifies ?

  • can we buy from US via ebay.com.au or only items listed on ebay.com.au?

  • do we need to register on mobile phone on wednesday? or can we use normal computer?

    • I assume via a normal computer

    • good question. I would only assume you can with a normal computer since they only stated that the transaction must be via mobile.

  • No interweb moby here-
So, does anyone know if there is ANY way to make the actual purchase via a computer?
Would this http://m.ebay.com.au/ mobile Ebay site from above work if accessed from a regular computer?

    • just copying n pasting what i wrote above:
you can actually use safari, access the developer options and tell it to act as if it’s an iphone running safari. all sites load as mobile versions…could work??

  • +1

Do you think you can buy more than one of the same item from the same dealer on buy it now?

    • That is what I want to know…

  • I suppose my question is, after you register tomorrow will they tell you (before Friday) that you're within the first 5000, or do they expect you to ASSUME that you are and go ahead and buy something anyway? If I don't know either way before Friday, there's no way I'm bidding on anything :D

    • Entrants will be notified if they are Happy Hour 50% Off Winners through:

      1. an instant confirmation page on the Website stating that they were one of the first 5,000 Entrants to enter the Promotion; and
      2. a SMS at 8am AEST on 24 September 2010 to the mobile phone number registered by the Happy Hour 50% Off Winners on the Registration Form providing details of the Happy Hour 50% Off Prize.

  • Gah I'll be on a plane during happy hour.

  • I'm hitting this like no-one's business. Need some new shoes :)

  • Great deal! gonna try to get this drobo s with the deal!
