  • FYI, a tweet from eBay:

@eBayAU Yes that's correct RT @simonk833: can you confirm if we can purchase from international sellers as long as we do it through eBay.com.au?

    • Nice, thats the reply to my question :D

  • Sorry, you haven't been accepted into Happy Hour, but the good news is that you've automatically gone into the draw to win one of five $1,000 prizes to be paid to your PayPal account, ____@____.com.au
Check our Promotions Board or our Twitter page on Wednesday 29th September to see if you're a winner.
    Thanks again and good luck!

    Talk about irony.

I tried furiously at 12pm on my work computer (super fast broadband) and I was just getting errors and timeouts. After 5 attempts, I gave up. At 12.04pm, I thought ok, this is a long shot, I fired up my ULTRA SLOW 3G Optus iPhone and went to the ebay page on my phone, entered my details furiously (I have never typed so quick on a mobile phone in my life with zero mistakes), guess what, gone through, 'Congratulations'.

What the HELL, man. Optus 3G, respect. I will never complain about their lame speeds again. Sheesh.

  • would like to know if the payment through paypal has to be made directly using balance of funds in account or can it also be paid using an echeque or any other linked method?

  • for some reason, I could not register using firefox, but it works fine with IE8

    • Yeah, strange that eh. I tried with FF and no good but Safari went straight through. Even tried them at both the same time but FF was giving some "this page is redirecting incorrectly" message…

    • FYI, I used Firefox and was able to register for the offer.

  • can you buy something now and pay for it on the happy hour?

    • No, I think you have to buy it and pay for it during Happy Hour.
Anyone know if you can buy two items from the one seller and get 50% of the total price? Or is it only for one item?

  • What's everyone gonna go buy? I'm stumped for ideas, except for giftcards.

    • im going to return my Monster beats by dr dre $300 headphones to the Apple store, and purchase a pair on ebay for $220, PLUS a $50 discount! oooh yeahhhh!!!

      • @mattliu

        lots of fakes on ebay!

check out whirlpool forums of people complaining about fakes on ebay

    • … hoping it's not 200 of us racing for the same 3 gift vouchers

      • It's surprising that the woolies/coles giftcards fetch almost near value on ebay, it'll probably be cheaper to normally buy them from smartsalary at 3% off.

  • +1

I think this might end up doing damage to eBay and PayPal's credibility. I think they are hoping, by design, the uncertainly will encourage the 5000 to be reluctant to make a purchase. The whole enter paypal address and enter ebay id thing will also cause a fair number of invalid entries.

    • I think they are hoping, by design

      How is it by design?
They need to know the eBay account you will use and the papal account you will pay with.
      Both are separate services.

will also cause a fair number of invalid entries.

      Why?
People were given the chance to confirm their details before submitting to the offer and the submitted details were confirmed if they were successful.

  • I'm getting so jealous seeing others got in!

    • don't be jeolous, ebay handled this worst than cotd did on a crazy sale.

e.g i got congratulations message, but below that message, my ebay id and paypal id were both blank!

up till now, theres no email confirmation from ebay, sheeeesh, must be some bait & switch tactic again LMAO, theres probably only 100 shoppers getting the cashback for all we know (not 5000 like they mentioned)

      • On Friday you will get an SMS as the website said.

        Try and register again.
If you successfully registered it will tell you that you have already registered

  • My email account was full at the time i registered (cause my paypal email is my mobile phone imap4 account), so i didn't get the email from ebay. I've since cleaned out my email and made space, but it doesn't retrieve anything that's already been sent.
So i've lost the email now. Can anyone tell me, is it needed for anything? Or can i just bu something using my phone and with paypal and i will get the 50% off?

    • +1

I don't think there was any confirmation email.

      • -1

I believe others have posted that they got a confirmation email

        • +1

No you get a confirmation page, and a sms on friday if you filled in your mobile number.

  • +1

Was just told that if you buy two items from the one seller in the Happy Hour you get 50% of the total because it's one transaction! Woo!
BTW I also got Karen M to talk to-poor thing must be the only helper (or they all go by that name)

    • i tried to ask this last nite with an ebay agent that was useless so I gave up and closed the window.

      • I want to get something as proof and she closed the window before I could save the conversation, so I sent an email to Paypal. Only problem is, their response made no sense at all-
"Once the payment is made on the one transaction, you can purchase multiple items from that seller. So, you are allowed to do what you have asked below." (I asked if we can get 50% cashback on a transaction with 2 items from a single seller)
It didn't answer my question!!! I replied back to confirm, and I'll let you know how I go.

        • Just got a reply back from a lady who was A LOT better than the last one-
"If you are one of the qualified winner of the 'Happy Hour' promotion, you can avail the 50% discount for one transaction regardless if it for 2 or more items for that single receipt."
          WOOOOO!!!!
This'll help a lot of other people as well!

  • If I purchase something for $US90, but through the ebay.com.au portal…will i get 50% off the US price? I hope this counts!

    • Yes, but it has to be through the eBay MOBILE portal and paid for on Paypal mobile. Just put it on your watch list so that you can find it easy-that's what I'm doing ;)

Oh, I see that you're interested in our Happy Hour promotion.

and she said taht we could use my ipod touch
    10:29:49 AM Michelle T.
Let me double check on the information then.
    10:29:58 AM Guest
    yep
    10:32:42 AM Michelle T.
    Thanks for waiting NAME!
    10:32:46 AM Guest
    yep
    10:33:42 AM Michelle T.
So far, you only asked how eBay and PayPal knows if a member is using a mobile phone.
    10:33:48 AM Guest
    yeah
    10:34:07 AM Guest
becasue i'm afraid that if i use my ipod touch i might not be able to get the 50%
    10:34:22 AM Michelle T.
With regards to that though, both have technical team who can track if member really are using mobile phones.
    10:34:39 AM Guest
but the ipod touch isn't a mobile phone
    10:35:07 AM Michelle T.
Let me verify that for you then.
    10:38:17 AM Michelle T.
    Thanks for waiting NAME.

    10:38:28 AM Guest
    it's fine
    10:39:28 AM Michelle T.
I have the information you need.
    10:39:31 AM Guest
    yep
    10:41:23 AM Michelle T.
Ipod touch isn't part of the mobile category that the promotion is talking about.
    10:41:32 AM Guest
    so it won't qualify
    10:42:11 AM Guest
    ?
    10:42:18 AM Michelle T.
However, since you are part of the 5000 qualifiers, you can use any mobile phone that can access Internet.
    10:42:35 AM Guest
So, will the ipod touch work
    10:42:40 AM Guest
    ?
    10:42:53 AM Michelle T.
Unfortunately, the ipod touch doesn't qualify.
    10:43:04 AM Guest
    okay
    10:43:14 AM Guest
    but what about the ipad
    10:43:37 AM Guest
because my friend has an ipad
    10:43:48 AM Guest
that i might use, does that still qualify
    10:43:58 AM Michelle T.
It won't as well, since the promotion is only intended to mobile phones.
    10:44:08 AM Michelle T.
    Do you have another phone?
    10:44:33 AM Michelle T.
I mean, mobile phone that can plainly send and receive sms?
    10:44:58 AM Michelle T.
Because the notification will be sent there as well as an sms.
    10:45:20 AM Guest
    yeah i a mobile phone
    10:45:31 AM Guest
    that i used to register
    10:45:37 AM Guest
but that cannot go onto the internet
    10:45:43 AM Michelle T.
Great! So you can use that instead!
    10:45:58 AM Guest
but it CAN'T go onto the internet
    10:46:43 AM Michelle T.
Oh, I see. Have you verify if it has Internet access and just needs to be set?
    10:47:00 AM Guest
i should go onto the internet
    10:47:09 AM Guest
because it is one of those old nokia phones
    10:47:15 AM Guest
    i looked onto this
    10:47:17 AM Guest
    http://pages2.ebay.com.au/mobile
    10:47:21 AM Guest
    and it shows the ipad
    10:47:28 AM Michelle T.
Yes, and grab the chance of having the promotions.
    10:49:18 AM Michelle T.
    *promotion I mean.
    10:49:29 AM Michelle T.
    I see that as well.
    10:49:43 AM Guest
    ok
    10:49:51 AM Michelle T.
However, the category doesn't include Ipad.
    10:49:52 AM Guest
    so it won't work
    10:50:24 AM Michelle T.
Since what the promo is referring to mobile phone where in you can carry anywhere, anything handy.
    10:50:41 AM Guest
so how does the technical team verify if its a mobile phone?
    10:51:19 AM Michelle T.
That, only the technical team would know.
    10:51:39 AM Guest
    okay
    10:51:46 AM Michelle T.
It has something to do with the IP address a member is using.
    10:51:50 AM Guest
so my ipod touch and the ipad won't work
    10:52:18 AM Michelle T.
I'm sorry NAME, but for the promotion, both are not applicable.
    10:53:59 AM Michelle T.
I'm not really sure how the technical team do it NAME, but it's one way of course to know if a member qualifies or not.
    10:54:15 AM Guest
okay that's all i need for today
    10:54:20 AM Guest
    thank you very much!!
    10:54:49 AM Michelle T.
    You're most welcome!!
    10:54:54 AM Michelle T.
    Nice chatting with you.

    • LOL, is Michelle a robot or something?

    • LOL niceee.

    • If you use the iPad via 3G network, I wonder how they're going to know… I doubt they'll actually trace the device?

    • nice work NAME!

i don't know how they're going to know. I can use my mobile phone and go onto ebay via wifi, same as using wifi on an ipad and touch. Not sure if they could tell whether you're using a 3G/GPRS connection either.
What does it say in the terms as to the definition of a "mobile phone"? You can make "phone" calls via wifi internet connection, so anyone can call their ipad or touch a mobile phone.

  • could someone confirm that the max refund is still only $50 even if i buy 2 item from the same seller in one transaction?

    • +1

Look through the comments, it has been mentioned many times

  • great. the stupid checkout wouldnt work on my phone.

It said "Click continue to go to paypals secure mobile checkout"

I click continue and it loads the same dam page!!!!!!!!!!!

    (windows mobile internet explorer)

    • Purchase day is not until tomorrow

    • Lol oops, yeah tomorrow. that was silly. Still the link to pay via pp doesnt function.

I wont be able to complete it tomorrow if the link doesnt work.

      • LOL!

You should be glad it didn't work.

        • yeah i am now :)

But still. How am i going to make it work tomorrow?

There could be plenty of annoyed people here tomorrow if this is a common problem.

The browser on my samsung pixon m8800 will not log in to ebay at all. Internet explorer on my windows mobile wil log in but the redirector link to pay doenst function. Not a good start.

          Edit: reply from paypal.

"I have reviewed the details of your account and can tell you that when you are using eBay and PayPal via internet explorer this is not classed as a mobile payment and would be the same as making the payment from your PC. A Mobile payment would be a payment made using the PayPal mobile application and as such the system could not complete your request. " WTF?

edit mark2: I asked paypay what they were talking about RE following the link from ebay and paying via mobile IE isnt a mobile payment. their reply:
"When you activate your phone for use with PayPal Mobile payment, you’ll use your mobile PIN to approve your mobile transactions. This process is very much different with using the phone to access internet and to log in to PayPal."

          • @Duff5000: That's pretty confusing. You would think they would honor it if you made the payment from a phone, no matter.

  • What if we buy multiple items how do we know which one will be 50% off? =S

    • It doesn't make a difference if it is one transaction

  • Does it require mobile internet or Wifi?

  • one of me mate did not fill up the mobile for notification as it says "not mandatory", then registered successfully

upon asking ebay live help, they said it was not registered successfully due to "incomplete" form according to the terms.

this is a total con job handled poorly by ebay.

"non-mandatory fields" then a word "incomplete" in terms to shove you off.

if a mobile number was mandatory in the first place, what would the other terms be like later? do you need to buy it from a 3g connection? what happens if you used wifi to buy?

too many bullshit flying around ebay these days…

    • i took a screenshot of the page when you were accepted into the 5000 people. It clearly says that if you given your mobile number you will be reminded friday morning, otherwise follow twitter.

      • just to add more salt to the wound, there are many flawed terms that ebay used and may use against you,

        If an Entrant's entry is:
        late;
        incomplete;
        incorrect including if an Entrant provides the wrong email address or mobile phone number;
        incomprehensible;

        it will be invalid,

so lets break this down again,

in my ebay, account, my email is registered to my business email address
in my paypal account, my email is registered to my personal email address

so what gives?? which one will it be ? lol

        mobile numbers,

there is a mobile number registered in my ebay account, what happens if i entered my second mobile number which is for a spare phone?

        lol

too much bullshit flying around, ebay can hit u back hard on this…. fail 100%

i suggest if you guys want to keep it safe and shove it back on ebay, edit your mobile numbers in both ebay and paypal to match the number you registered in the form since yesterday.

        • I am pretty sure the mobile number is the one that register for paypal "mobile payment"

Make sure you set up the "mobile payment" service to the number you gave them.

      • Oh no, I didn't include a phone number as I thought I didn't need a reminder..

  • Tough question…..

Can you buy something via "best offer", have the offer accepted now and then pay for it during the happy hour and still get the 50% off ?

Or must you only have to win an auction or "buy it now" listing between happy hour time?

  • +3

TO ANYONE HOPING TO USE THIS TOMORROW

Make sure you sign up for paypal "mobile payment". Logging into the site using your phone IS NOT a mobile payment!

    https://www.paypal.com/au/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=xpt/Marketing/m…

You need to enable the mobile payment service on your paypal account.

    From paypal:
    """"""""""""""""
….when you are using eBay and PayPal via mobile internet explorer this is not classed as a mobile payment and would be the same as making the payment from your PC.

When you activate your phone for use with PayPal Mobile payment, you’ll use your mobile PIN to approve your mobile transactions.

This process is very much different with using the phone to access internet and to log in to PayPal.
    """""""""""""""

    • Hmmm, I bought something just then just to test it but the mobile pin was optional.
I could still sign up with my paypal/password to send the payment.
The device I'm using is iphone 3gs. I'm using the eBay mobile from the appstore.

Does anyone know if you need the mobile PIN method for them to approve you for the 50%?

    • So how exactly do we go about doing this. We purchase an item from ebay first.. How should payment be made? Just by ebay checkout?

      • From what i understand:
1: You need to buy the product on ebay during the 1h.

2: You need to pay for the purchase using the "mobile payment" option. An option that you need to enable on your paypal account.

You cant just log in to paypal using the internet on your phone.

        • But what's the "mobile payment" option. I have activated it. But have absolutely no idea how to use it.. Can someone enlighten me please? Is it the same as using the paypal app?

  • In regards to the multiple items from sale seller;

    • Should that read:

In regards to the multiple items from sale seller; We’ve had a few questions on the same subject re. the mobile happy hour, if you purchase multiple items from one multi-quantity listing from the same seller you’ll be eligible for the promotion.

I bought 2 items from the same seller on my mobile today. (was meant to be one but when i hit refresh it bought another). With 2 items from the same seller i couldnt even get to the checkout, it would just give me a message saying this transaction will need to be completed on www.ebay.com.au (not the mobile site)

      • Yeah, I copied and pasted it from the eBay twitter page (hence the backwardsness).

  • -1

Too much effort, too much competition, poor return and massive profits for the telecos and ebay. Ever wondered why didnt they make the process easier to participate instead of going through loopholes to keep you connected as long as possible?!! Well, glad I didnt participate and sorry for those who missed out despite trying.

  • To everyone trying to register your mobile phone number to the form provided in the few posts above me:

Enter you number in this format "0400123456", not in the suggested "6140123456".

I made the mistake of listening to paypal and it would not send a text msg with the confirmation code until I modified the phone number.

I agree though, lots of work to get this to be successful. I wasn't given any notification of having to activate my phone number. I only saw it here. I just assumed you could use the paypal app and that would be fine.

    • I got the following error when I clicked 'Activate Payments'

"This phone number is not supported for PayPal Mobile. Only UK numbers are currently supported. Please try editing the phone number and add a zero and try activating again."

      wth?

Edit: I managed to get around it by clicking the 'Add' button to add another number. Entered the same number, selected Mobile, and it worked.

  • Just realise if I access ebay via my mobile phone (m.ebay.com.au), it will not have ebay.com.au on the top left section, just "ebay". Will it be a problem and make it ineligible to claim the 50% off? Is it the same for those using ebay iphone apps?

  • I thought i would test buying some ink i needed with the mobile payment thing.

I go to the item in my ebay on the phone, after clicking buy, it says: "to pay for this item you need to go to the main ebay web site". I have no option to pay on the mobile for this item.

What happens if the item you go to buy tomorrow has to be paid via the main site?

I predict lots of people having trouble getting the whole ebay paypal thing to work tomorrow. Expect lots of pissed off people.

Expect even more pissed off people when they dont get their cashback because they didnt do a step correctly.

  • Alright, so to sum it all up..

    1. Will it work if we use WiFi on devices such as our ipod touches?(Confused because of what shifty909 said a few posts above-Need to register your 'mobile' and get the confirmation code sent etc to it)
    2. (Just to confirm this) We are not allowed to purchase separate items from the same seller, but we are allowed to buy more in quantity(eg. buying 2 earphones of the same model?)
    • Have a read,
you need to nominate and activate a Paypal mobile phone number.
Needs to be a real mobile, no wifi etc

      • oh geeeeeeeee… wait do we also need funds in our PayPal? or can we just connect it to our credit card etc and paypal will withdraw it from there?

btw: can we also purchase from ebay international?

        • wait do we also need funds in our PayPal? or can we just connect it to our credit card etc and paypal will withdraw it from there?

Definitely no need to add funds if you have a valid credit card linked to your PayPal.

can we also purchase from ebay international?

Yes, this was confirmed by eBay on Twitter and on their live chat.

      • Have a read, you need to nominate and activate a Paypal mobile phone number. Needs to be a real mobile, no wifi etc

Where does it say that? I've paid for things before using PayPal completely within the eBay app on my iPhone (usually when it's connected to Wi-Fi), and I've never had to activate my PayPal account for mobile payments or nominate a mobile number.

I don't think there'll be an issue with using the eBay app on an iPod touch on Wi-Fi to take advantage of this promotion; the eBay app is identical for both the iPhone and iPod touch.

        • The live chat issh had with Ebay help.

It's about halfway down this page ↑↑↑

It appears this promotion is all about using Paypal mobile as opposed to just paying with regular Paypal by clicking through from the m.Ebay app.

          It's confusing and unclear :p

          • @King Tightarse:

It appears this promotion is all about using Paypal mobile as opposed to just paying with regular Paypal by clicking through from the m.Ebay app.

I suspect paying with PayPal within the native eBay apps for iPhone/iPod touch/iPad or Android will be fine. No idea about what you need to do if you trying to do it through m.ebay.com.au website though.

            It’s confusing and unclear :p

            This it is. :)

Now I REALLY don't know what to do.

I planned to use a friends internet capable mobile tomorrow but obviously the number will be different from my own which I included in the "optional" reminder field of the form, that now appears to be mandatory.
People posting above ↑↑↑ are saying that you cannot pay with Mobile Paypal from the m.ebay app directly (it directs you to use the full Ebay site I.E. with a regular computer??? Is this correct - doesn't make sense)

Bah, confused, being asked to jump too many hoops for a "maybe" refund…

    • yeah i am thinking this is really not that great a deal now. Wasted so much time on the stupid thing.

    • @king

      you are wrong

using ur friends mobile should be fine

when you login to paypal mobile it will ask for a mobile pin, this will mean you are using a mobile :P

      • From above…

        annoynimous

one of me mate did not fill up the mobile for notification as it says “not mandatory”, then registered successfully

upon asking ebay live help, they said it was not registered successfully due to “incomplete” form according to the terms.

  • +1

Too complicated and too much risk of buying something and then not being eligable for the $50 refund.

  • So I'm browsing the eBay wap site, and the item I was planning to get (from the US) says "immediate pay items not supported" while the Australian-based items say "You can pay for it using PayPal on your phone". Does that mean I won't be able to get my 50% off on my US-based item? Looks like it might end up going the way Duff5000's purchase did …

  • I found people are selling wools and MYER gift cards for 20% more than the value, you have to pass half of the $50 to the seller! :(

  • From what I've seen just now, you won't be able to buy anything that's immediate payment using Ebay app/mobile. If you attempt to it'll give you the "Immediate pay items not supported". It appears to be this way, international or local.

    • The way to meet all the conditions is probably to buy the item from m.ebay then log into Paypal mobile with a previously registered phone (no wifi/iPods), find the ebay item number and pay for it from the Paypal mobile site.

Note: phone number may have to match the "optional" reminder number nominated when you registered.

      Only probably though.
Kind of getting like meeting Telstra mobile discount conditions:
(discount only applies if it's the second Tuesday of an even numbered month, not during a leap year, while hopping on one foot etc)

      • They told me that logging into paypal on a phone does not count as using paypal mobile.

You have to use the "mobile paypal" and enter your pin number.

    • The eBay app for iPhone/iPod touch supports immediate payment items (as of version 1.6.1 of the eBay app according to the changelog). Not sure about other platforms or m.ebay.com.au.

      • Nope. "Sorry, but this item requires immediate payment which is not currently supported by eBay Mobile on this site."

I alerted the guy selling the Lisomo 10 pack t-shirts to this on eBay. When it was listed as immediate payment, there was no "Buy It Now" button in the app. After I told him, and he changed it, the "Buy It Now" button appears, and it looks like I buy it now.

This is using eBay app version 1.7.2.

        • Hmm, weird. I just searched around for some immediate payment items and viewed them through the eBay app (1.7.2 as well) and the "Buy It Now" button appears for all of them for me. Example (searching for that listing in the app): http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190443…

          • @[Deactivated]: I went to that exact item on my ebay app, and I don't get "Buy It Now". Very weird.

Have you signed up to Paypal Mobile?

Also in settings, under Paypal (inside the ebay app), my "keep my signed in" is greyed off.

"WTF?" level of weird. Might be a bug.

Have you signed up to Paypal Mobile?

No, still wondering if I should. I've paid for stuff with PayPal in the eBay app before, so I'm inclined to believe that doing so is unnecessary for this promotion if you're using the app.

              Greyed off for me too.

      • Yes but it has been established that the Paypal payment must be via Paypal mobile from a previously registered phone not by clicking through from Ebay (that will not get the refund)

      • SOmeone better ask if paying using the iphone ap counts as paying using "paypal mobile"

From what they emailed me you have to use the "paypal mobile" service and pin number. If the iphone ap uses this already then i guess you are fine. If it just logs you in to paypal like normal maybe it isnt.
