It's a 1050Ti, and fairly substantial performance jump over the previous model's 960M. I have that older model, and I have no hesitation calling it a gaming laptop - it has no issues with running modern titles at 1080p and high-ish detail settings with playable frame-rates. The review by LTT concurs.

Sure, more expensive laptops have better specs - in other news, the sky is blue today.

Mate what do you want for $1200? 32GB ram & 1080ti?

      • +10

… yes… infact yes i do want that.

    • +1

      how entitled

    • Which games can it not play at 1080p?

  • +1

have been using this laptop for 6 months now, only drawback is the TN display. other then that its a pretty good laptop.
note that the fan can get really loud and ever now and then i would get this look from people looking at me when the fan desires to spin up.

    • Can you upgrade RAM?

      • +2

Yes, it comes included with 1 x 8 GB stick and a free slot for additional RAM

      • +4

i got the 16 gb one and it just toke one slot so i can add another 16gb for a total of 32 gb ram

tbh, windows will always idle half of your ram

        • No idea where you read that crackpot theory but windows will not 'idle' half your RAM.. Hell I don't even know how idle is being defined here, cold-state? Do you understand what and why we have pagefile?

        • @dfaktz:
Maybe he means something along the lines of Hibernation? Dunno really.

        • +2

If you don't run that bloatware google chrome, you will always have a huge chunk of RAM free.

    • +5

the newer units have IPS, like this one. insanely better than the old TN

    • +1

If you want there's good quality IPS panel upgrades on Ebay for around $100. Worth the upgrade. This newer models are IPS, Dell understood they made a mistake by going with a TN.

      • +1

I got one in the last deal and i'm a noob with screens - can you please point me in the direction of what is a good ebay panel and how i would go about installing it? (also - does that nullify my warranty :( i got three years)

  • no hdd?

    • +1

Not in this base model, but there is a 2.5" bay to add an extra SDD or HDD

      • +5

        Thanks for your comments.
So its best to get this laptop:
        - as its good value for money
        - get it with 16GB RAM so that upgrading to 32GB is cheap and easy
        - get it with 256GB SSD as the storage can be expanded with an additional SSD/HDD
        - and because this version has upgraded to an IPS display.

The only negative things I can find are:
        - crap webcam
        - Lacks any USB-C ports
        - No ThunderBolt 3 port
        - Very thick at 25mm (vs 19mm usual laptops, vs 15mm Ultrabooks)
        - Very heavy at 2.65kg (vs 1.7kg usual laptops, vs 1.2kg Ultrabooks)

        • Sounds like you've summed it up pretty nicely, good work! :)
[If you get this laptop and have spec'd it alike the post above, when you get your spare change for extra parts, you'll have the equivalent laptop of someone that paid 2 grand~ off the shelves.]

Something to add to the pros is
"Futureproofing" very nice for this price range (Minus I/O Ports)

          Cons,
1/1 WiFi (Single Lanes, Will see a 20mbit/20mbit max over wifi)
i5 CPU will actually be the first bottleneck most gamers will find out about when pushing the laptop to the limit.

        • +2

@dfaktz: only silly people "future proof" in pc's. You would usually be better buying decent specs but not going silly and having cash later.

(Not that we are doing this here, my meaning is people who buy a top tier alianware PC so they can play games in 5 years time…

          I sont see a ram configure option…

    Great laptop for the price.

Also can anyone confirm the refreshed models is now with IPS? Reviews all state the 'last' model had a TN screen.

    • +4

Yes, the deal website specifically states: 15.6-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS Anti-Glare LED-Backlit Display

    • +3

Yup. I also spoke to customer service today, who confirmed it is an IPS display

    • Why is the list price so cheap? I'd usually expect a refurb or when eBay has a discount on a discount for this price.

  • sorry to ask, but does anyone have spare code? Cheers.

      • Is there a big difference between the 1050 and 1050ti?

        • +4

Nice boost in FPS, worth the money if you can get a model with 1050ti

        • +3

As far as I can tell, with that deal [edit/snip] - you're swapping 125$ and the Ti model(-2GB RAM and 80mhz clock) for a nvme slot (filled) i7 7700k up from i5 and a 1tb extra hdd.

If you do choose to get a metabox (don't forget that their weight/keyboard/trackpad has been known to not feel top quality) but this is the trade-off with big companies or ones like MB that have to custom print 3d parts, etc.

Know that EITHER of these laptops are absolute beasts and cooling needs to be looked at for either option.

TL;DR Directly to your question: Yes, but some come very close dollar for dollar, personally I would buy this one.
.. If you do decide to go for a metabox, I will happily help you choose parts.

Double/Triple edit Honestly, if you can't to wait and you intend to use it for gaming for the next few years, buy the Dell and put that extra $100~ into the second ddr4 ram slot and a 2.5" drive.

        • @dfaktz:

Thanks for the comment. This is me more looking out for a friend who's after a laptop with decent gaming properties.

Good info, good to know. Thanks again. EDIT: BTW, my friend is unsure still, he hasn't made a decision yet.

On my phone now but just wanted to throw in the review I used to scan over while i looked at the metabox setup you linked.

    This one or thinkpad e570p?

    • +1

This one! Only slightly higher price but almost better everything else (performance, battery life, design)

      • The areas that are better in terms of spec are:
        - 4GB 1050TI vs 2GB 1050TI
        - 256GB SSD vs 128GB SSD
        - Not too sure about battery life but the Dell probably wins

They both have the same CPU and I actually quite like the plain design of the E570p. Although the Dell also has a simple design, there is still a gamer aesthetic to the vents that might make you rethink bringing it with you to a meeting.

        • The Dell model is NOT 1050ti. It is gtx 1050.

How that compares to the 2gb 1050ti i have no idea..

Edit: my bad it is a ti misread post

    • Nope, I personally wouldn't be searching to get a good VR experience with any laptop that doesn't have atleast a 1070 in it, 1080 is really preferential.

I am wondering how is Dell reliability these days? I owned a DELL latitude back in 2008/2009, it was a tank until a problem occurred to the screen which then the screen died completely. Anyone wanna share a bit of their experiences with DELL laptop?
