    Can it be used externally?

    • +3

I wouldn't recommended as anyone can actually pinch it.

      • +1

        You'll already have the footage.

        Is it weatherproof though?

        • +1

          You'll already have the footage.

Unless it's hacked, wouldn't it be on the SD card?

        • +2

Won't help you against the bombers!

        • I have one, the sd slot is not covered at all, so I wouldn't trust it even under an eve.

        • @Stix: It also saves to the cloud (I think you have to be logged into the cam - impossible if stolen). Mine can also save to my device.

        • @ilikeit:

Mine can also save to my device.

          As in SD card?

        • @Stix: if you have a mi router pro, it automatically save videos to the hardisk in router.

        • @Stix: No just on my phone in the gallery. Maybe I hit the download button…written in Chinese.

        • I'm not sure.. I've just ordered mine tonight.. I don't know if its weatherproof or not.. I wouldn't say so as its only like $22

        • +8

@Stix: If you want something that will automatically save any motion detection to the cloud and notify you of such, may I suggest grabbing an unused smart phone and load Alfred camera app on it.

I've used this for over a year now. I have multiple old phones hidden outside the house, permanently connected to power and they work flawlessly sending me and my partner alerts of when people come and go. You can watch live and listen in, talk into the phone speaker (scares the crap out of unsuspecting people), you can even turn on the LED light if the phone has one or the night vision function works beautifully in low light without LED. Or you can watch the recorded motion detection footage which it stores in the cloud (not on the phone) for 7 days telling you time and dates they were taken.

Just a great app which makes use of your unused phones. Use it for lots of practical purposes including a baby monitor. I also used it to monitor my dog in my backyard while I was at work. I never knew it barked while I was away. I just spoke to it over the phone and that was all that was needed to settle her.

          Just an idea.

        • @yolow: it's definitely not weather proof.

        • @OldBugger:

so it's just a night vision filter or something?

hmm very interesting though. got a couple of android phones to try this on. cheers for the suggestion!

        • +1

@CVonC: yep, filter. So it needs some light.

        • @JackyQ:
I noticed this 'save to router' feature in the latest firmware update. Does it only work with a 'mi router pro'?

        • @ohagas: yes,

        • @JackyQ:
Thanks JackyQ. From what I'm reading here it seems the pro version has no inbuilt storage, but the XD version has 8TB:
http://www.gearbest.com/wireless-routers/pp_605932.html, so I assume you'll still need to connect an external drive?
If so, just wondering would this much cheaper version work with a connected drive?
          https://www.zapals.com/xiaomi-mi-wi-fi-router-3-dual-band-11…

        • @ohagas:

It should work, however since myself did not try it, so I can guarantee it. You can ask me if you have problem setting it up. Downlaod the mi home app, in the camera setting it will show the option for saving videos to router drive.

    • +1

I wouldn't recommend using this internally either.

      • i hear a jackass style "challenge accepted" dare coming on.

    • +13

      Can it be used externally?

didn't you get the answer the last time you asked?

      • Alzheimer's.

      • jv seems to be beyond the rules of spam here and is allowed clutter up every deal with complete horseshit.
I just wish there was a way, beyond blocking, to prevent me from seeing anything from him/her.

As it stands, I still see "Commenter blocked" on every crap unfunny post they make.

        • +1

Who is going to ask if there are any bargains without jv?

  • Anything new know if this is one of the models that is likely to join a botnet?

    • +2

Anything new know if this is one of the models that is likely to join a botnet?

      Well, a few things.

Firstly, all the top tier ISPs are (present tense) actively blocking so the Mirai/Bash Lite bot net is diminishing.

Next, even though the author of Mirai released the source code a few months back, the main question is that of the C&C servers. There were only a handful of servers and the author of Mirai, for unknown reason, has taken them down.

However, for this particular OEM, the root username/password is hard-coded so using the same passwords that Mirai/Bash Lite is programed to infiltrate, this product can easily be exploitable.

Everyone is focusing on post-WannaCrypt episodes and Mirai/Bash Lite is just a byword.

      • Hardcoded root? Yep, not a change its going on my network, even if i can control it on my enterprise firewall.

        • HERE is a list of 61 passwords Mirai/Bash Lite "knows" about.

Before buying any IoT stuff from the web, read the Users Guide or Configuration Guide. If any of the default username/password matches, don't buy it. (Alternatively, since a lot of these poorly coded IoT gear use Telnet, one can disable Telnet.) Remember, a lot of times, the root passwords are hard-coded and cannot be changed.

A few weeks ago we had a site who reported to have purchased a PoE wired camera. Hey it's great, they said. We read the User's Guide and found out that password is limited to SIX (6) characters only. And yes, they use Telnet and HTTP only.

        • +1

          @sanmigueelbeer:
If your username is "mother" the password is an easy guess :)

        • @nocure:

          LOL.

Google some of the exotic passwords and the results will crop up certain OEM products.

          Caveat emptor, I suppose.

    • Yes it has no security like all other internet of things devices. Enjoy protecting yourself with a camera anyone on the internet can log into!

  • don't forget 8% back at cash rewards fellas!

  • Absolutely a stunner deal!! Have 2 and just bought another 4 for my parents. Cheap and Amazing!! Thanks OP

    • +1

I wouldn't say the footage is 1080p. It looks pretty average to me. It's probably OK to monitor something while you're around (like a pet or kids), but I wouldn't rely on it to convict someone. Night vision is crap. It's perhaps a cheap deterrent. As commented on here many times, it gets set off by dust particles in the air and flickering light when using motion detection. Also, I couldn't set it up on an ipad, two Android tabs or a high spec smartphone. Had to rely on old beater phone. Better than nothing I guess.

      • +1

you'd be surprise to know that many of the public places CCTV system are generation behind this camera in terms of image quality and they still do the job.

      • How do you know the camera isn't just detecting paranormal activity?

      • I wouldn't say the footage is 1080p

        OK but it is.

        • It is 1080p, but it appears far crappier. I've seen footage from many other 1080p cameras that are very clear (like they should be at that res). The footage from this cam is not very clear, severely lacking detail and moving objects are jittery like it is dropping frames.

        • 1080p is the resolution which doesn't necessarily describe the picture quality.

  • +1

I have 4 already. Good quality.
But you need to be Chinese to understand the app settings menu
I paid close $30 for each. Tries the hack but reverted back, didn't think it was mature enough or maybe rtsp is not for me.

    • +1

I changed my language to English, it all makes good sense.

  • +1

How many of you hack these? Is it safe to keep the default firmware?

    • +1

Tried it, little unstable as the rtsp server dies. Then again I haven't spent a lot of time on it

    • safe is relative term, if you use the xiaomi mi home app, as i'ts design for, then the cloud services it uses are all in china, thus footage of your house or whatever is going to china and thus can likely be accessed by the Chinese government because communism, now whether or not you think that's acceptable or not is up to you, from a more specific security point of view i wouldn't say china has a good track record in that department.

its much safer to hack it and kill its internet access entirely (those are two separate acts)

  • code works. purchased x 1. cheers

  • Bought one to try :).

  • +5

I bought one of these cameras last year, around $30. It has been working wonderfully. By the way, the newly updated software app is now in English, so if you can't read Chinese, it's no longer a problem. Check out the video for the possible uses of this camera https://youtu.be/d1MoXgAU48w

I hope this helps those people sitting on the fence whether to buy it or not.

    • +1

Was watching video and decided I would try one and then deal expired. Oh well. Kids get to eat for another day then I guess.

    • Is the ismart app compatible with the Xiaomi?

    • This looks like a different brand of camera? Is it just XiaoFang with english firmware?

    • That is actually surprising. So who is the inventor and who is the copycat?
The design is IDENTICAL (and quite unusual to be just a "common"design which can be blamed for the usual foscam knockoffs)
Including the (supposedly patent pending) identification of the fie and CO alarm.
      Interesting….

  • +1

Coupon code "ZAXXF0556" is not valid.

Do you need to register before using the coupon?

    • +1

Yup, you will need to have an account for the code to work.

  • Bought one around 5th May from Geekbuyng and the camera was still with driver for delivery since 5th Jun. I hate Auspost

  • Cheers OP :)

  • I bought one last month and it's fantastic

  • +1

Can this be used as an IP Cam to record to my Synology Nas?

    • I'm note sure. However, I will be trying this method out to see if it works (once I get the camera[Ordered one tonight!).

      https://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?t=95211

If anyone else can confirm this feel free to do so here :)

    • Check out the custom firmware that is available. Provides RSTP stream

  • shipping 7 - 45 days

    • Probably 45 days is the minimum going on previous purchases

  • from site:

    Note
First, please download APP "Mi Home" from Google Play or Apple Store. After download the "Mi Home" App, you need to set Mainland China as the usage area.

Is this why people are asking if its SAFE to use the stock firmware? Whats the hesitation? Are these known to call back home or something?

      • -3

        English please.

        • These devices have no security. They won't be getting any security. If you connect it to the internet it will be compromised.

        • @Diji1: so from reading the article I'm assuming even putting a password doesn't make it secure.

    • the biggest concern is that most things like this don't have good security especially the ones from china which is fine for a toaster but for a camera is questionable but yes the secondary concern for these and other chinese ones is that the cloud services are all in china thus footage of your home or whatever will end up going through china, thats why the hack exists and why its recommended

  • Thinking of setting this up in our front room looking out the window to serve as a front door camera for when someone rings the door bell or whatever and we just fire up the app to see who it is.
Are these the cheapest-but-decent Wifi cameras? Any cheaper alternatives? I doubt I'll need the Mi image quality but I would assume their software is quicker and reliable though.

(FYI, I don't even know if these would do what I want, e.g. wake on Wifi; I'm making a lot of assumptions lol)

    • Sound and video has about 2-3 seconds delay when used with stock firmware.

      • That's lonngg. Mine's about 0.5 sec.

        • on what firmware

        • I use it as baby monitor and it's 2-3 seconds delay because if u am in kitchen I can hear my kid and then baby monitor after 2-3 seconds.

      • Thanks. Not what I expected for the brand but would still be ok for the job. It's just to get a looksie at who it is.
I'll dig around for more info and set up ideas first. I'm sure it'll be on special again soon.

  • Might be stating the bleeding obvious but I didn't check AUS dollars on upper left corner of the site and paid in US dollars which with the discount ended up being $22 something. Now I can see what is making holes in my backyard at night.

  • +2

I thought I could go a week without buying anything from Ozbargain. Oh well i'll try again next week.

    • and I thought giving up smoking was hard!!!

      • You should appreciate there isn't a cigarette deal here.

  • I've bricked 2 out of 3 of these after installing the XiaoFang Hack (the yellow light just stays on and it doesn't respond to the reset button). Has anyone else done the same?

    • Did you update the firmware prior to applying the hack?

      • does doing this make it or break it?

        • +1

I didn't apply the update for one of them and it got bricked.. for the next one i applied the update and it got bricked too.

The only one i got working with the hack was an earlier model that requires a paper clip to reset. Both models that got bricked have a plastic button that you push to reset.

        • @HugoHugo:
My one worked fine with the hacks and it has the plastic button you push to reset, are you sure you followed the instructions exactly?

  • It's quite frustrating how this camera has smoke alarm and CO alarm audio detection, but it won't trigger when a home security alarm goes off.

  • Getting a camera that only works with a proprietary app is just dumb, I wouldn't do it even at this price. Get a Foscam or something.

    • Check out the custom firmware that is available. Provides RSTP stream

      • Can you please point me to the right direction and share how to.do the hack and firware upgrarde?

  • I cannot get mine to pair with my phone. After displaying the QR code on the mobile that you suppose to scan with the camera it says something in Chinese and then tries to finish the setup but fails every time. How do you pair it and how do you change voice to English?

    • Have you set up your country in the app as mainland China? Has to be set as Mainland China for it to work.

    • As I wrote earlier: "I couldn't set it up on an ipad, two Android tabs or a high spec smartphone. Had to rely on old beater phone." ??? Yes, tried to set it ML China.

  • Now $26.95 each with coupon applied. Seems this is expired.

    • weird.. It still say its $21.99 for me - Screenshot

      • Maybe it only works for the first item ordered. I ordered 3, so averaged out at $26.95. Didn't check the sums before clicking pay..oops.

Edit: yes, that's it. Max of 1 item discounted in an order.

        • Try making multiple single order purchase and see if it works. :)

  • -2

    coupon no work lah

    • I've just checked and it seems to still work - Unless I've over looked.

      Refer to the comment above.

  • I have these. Don't expect them to be your main camera. They're garbage at nigt and so is the app.
