That's actually not a bad price for these things.

EDIT: Oh and I forgot, username checks out.

I have one of these and it goes well. Starts first time, every time (which is why I bought a Honda after nothing but frustration with my aging Briggs & Stratton powered Victa). From memory I paid about $699 for mine at the time, so this isn't a bad price.

      I paid about $699

Is that RRP? Hand in your OzBargain badge.

      • Had an urgent need for a new mower, and live in a small country town. Didn't have much choice at the time, but was confident enough in the brand to pay RRP (which I generally avoid at all costs).

my aging (7yrs+) Briggs & Stratton, is still going.
I'm sure it would have been sub 300$ model from bunnings. Don't look after it at all, sits in the patio.
Gets wet when it storms, never replaced the oil, never clean it.
The bag catcher is broken, and a little bit of plastic broke off the control lever.

Still starts on the 4-5th crank.

All I've changed is the spark plug, once, a few years ago.

      • my aging (7yrs+) Briggs & Stratton, is still going.

Same, they're simple but fairly good motors.

Mine starts first go every time, only have to pull it about half way and it fires up.

        • "only have to pull it about half way and it fires up" - yep!
I see so many people struggle with pull starts. Just gently pull on the cord a few times until you get strong resistance (compression) and then give it a proper pull. Starts every time!

      • Maybe I got burnt by a bad one. Mine wasn't looked after great, but did get oil changed, filters replaced, new spark plugs and carbie cleaned every couple of years. Unfortunately as time went on it became harder and harder to start, and wouldn't maintain a constant idle (even after fiddling about with the idler). Eventually got to the point where I had to walk extra slow, because it would rev and up down, with the grass only getting cut at the higher rev.

I'm sure someone who knew more about these things could probably fix it, but I was in the market for a mower with mulching capability anyway, and it was Fathers Day, so I made it my gift.

        • Sounds like a carbie issue. These engines are simple to work on if you are inclined and truly are a 'simple' engine, so nothing much should go wrong. My son used to race dirt karts using a slightly modified B&S motor. Even the guys running heavily-modified motors found the B&S motors very reliable.

    • I too had a frustrating Briggs & Stratton engine on a Rover mower. Never again.

  • I have this mower, a score from the Masters closure sales discount mixed with 5% wish gift cards.. RRP is definitely correct, think after all my discounts I got it for roughly $500..

As for the mower, have a 900sqm block with lots of yard grass and it goes great, as above, starts first time every time..The only thing I don't like is the catcher groove, fills up with grass and sand so when you go to place the catcher back on after emptying you have to clean out to get a good fit.. Only negative though, can't go wrong with a Honda..

    4 x tiny levers to adjust height….yuk

material/fabric catcher get covered in dust…yuk

    steel decks rust….yuk

    elastic band run engine…yuk

small hole rear discharge that clogs….yuk

Buy a proper honda mower not this nasty one, its only a few $100 more

    • "…its only a few $100 more" …. yuk!

a ride on mower is a few $100 more too… yuk

      i just puked.. yuk

but i agree if i was spending that much. i wouldn't get this model.

    • I actually prefer the individual height adjustment, useful for running around the edges of my garden beds.

Agree on the catcher, but mine never gets used (I mulch instead), so it's not an issue.

No problem with rusting so far, but what's the alternative? I thought all mower decks were steel? (genuinely curious) And what do you mean by elastic band run engine? Again, I'm genuinely curious.

What would you recommend, and why?

Cheaper mowers are pressed steel deck which can be really pox, like MTD and some Victa's, these days they use better steel and better treatment, BUT they will still rust

Alloy deck, as in aluminium costs more, but can be cast in perfect shape and never rust.

The GC honda is a OHC engine with a rubber band [not a chain] to run the engine, it is a cheap and nasty way to do it, but they have had very few failures so dont be concerned about it, its a light duty engine with pox plastic starter, but they are only $30 so not the end of the world, for your use i doubt would be a issue.

For domestic use it will be fine for you, easy start, quiet and economical on fuel

Its the old story… AGAIN "IN LIFE YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR"

        • Thanks!

  • Got a Victor mower with a Honda GCV160 engine last month second hand for $400 and so far its running great, but the big thing i find is how quite it is, can mow a good 30 mins latter over my old two stroke.

I'm still using the $200 Victa Sabre from Big W that was posted here 10 years ago - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/2518

It was how I came across OzBargain initially.

I got one of those to replace my Rover with B&S engine! It was probably the last Victa mower before Briggs & Stratton bought the company. That Victa gave me nearly 8 years of excellent service and was a superb bargain. It saved me thousands compared to getting the mowing done for me. We were lucky to get it, they were selling very quickly.
