    Optus SIM Only (12mth Plan)

    $40/month on a 15 month contract

    12 months or 15 months?

    • +5

oops, had 15 on the mind when typing 15gb i think. post updated

  • Is Optus sport still FOC air $15 per month? I just got a text saying my Optus sport was now going to cost $15 on top of my $35.99 plan.

    • +1

it does say that optus sport is $15 a month, so yeah looks like its not free on certain plans anymore

    • +2

I'm on the same plan and I'd definitely question Optus about this (I did on live chat recently) - I got that text too and also another one a few months ago which said the subscription to Optus Sport had ended - when I queried that one they said 'don't worry, it will be re-enabled automatically in September'. I advised them it was a bit confusing sending customers that info then.

The other day the text they sent also said the free service had finished and would now cost $15 a month and be added to my plan automatically - when I questioned this and said that Optus Sport was included free when I signed up (on what was a $60 plan discounted to $40 at the time) live chat informed me 'don't worry, yes it is included, you will receive a credit each month for Optus Sport and still pay the same as before'.

As with any promises that live chat reps make I'll be watching my future bills very carefully!

      • Wondering if your free Optus Sport has continued to roll forward?

I joined on the $40 plan last year with free EPL and now my free subscription has been cancelled.

        • Nope, it got cancelled. I pushed back a few times via online chat, especially as they originally assured me it would continue (as per above), but they apologised profusely for the 'wrong information' I was given and basically said it was a once-off offer that was free for 12 months but is now paid for everyone.

    • I got that too.
My concern is if I can cancel that $15 charge in June and July as no epl games and resume the service after that period

  • +1

anyone still in the contract try to get this by restarting the contract for 12 months?

    • +2

reading the T&C it doesnt say only for new customers, and when u select

      Im already with optus
      it comes up with
Upgrade a current Optus plan (Online Only)

      so maybe you can?

  • +1

I'm currently getting 10GB without the free data streaming at $36 per month. Going to look into upgrading. Thanks, OP!

    • +1

seems there is $59 cancellation fee if you want to change according to the optus rep on chat

      • You can tell to waiver many of those shitty fees if you ask. Anyone else have this experience??

        • I kept trying on Optus chat asking for the upgrade and about the 4th agent said I can upgrade with no fees. Seems like a lottery with regards to how they enforce their terms

  • +2

I tried optus chat and I'm on the $40 sim only plan which expires in Oct 2017. They say that I need to pay a cancellation fee if I want to go onto this plan

    • +1

did they mention how much the cancellation was?

      • +1

yeah about $37 but then if I went onto this 12 month plan and wanted to upgrade to the samsung galaxy note 8 I would have to pay cancellation charges for this plan so I declined.

        • +3

Hi! I had the same experience as you did! My contract also ends in Oct so I still had 3 months left from a 12 month contract, the first rep told me that I had to pay $36.5 to cancel my contract (12GB) to be able to go onto this new contract (15GB) but I declined. 1 hr later I was like… this is a good deal… maybe I'll try again and TADA the 2nd rep told me I was able to upgrade without any fees so I went ahead with it. Also I was told you're also allowed to upgrade to a phone plan anytime without any fees either. My example is, if I go on this 12 month contract now, am I able to change to a phone plan sometime in September without any fees, the rep said yes. It comes down to who you speak too I guess.

        • @Marshmelon: Just had same issue, told me it's $11.99 per month left on the contract. We are also Oct contract end date. None of this makes sense, one person is quoted $59, which isn't even a multiple of $11.99, others on same contract date get told one thing, then another.

        • @maximage:

The cancellation fee is dependent on the amount of time remaining for the contract.

It's in the critical information summary in regards to cancellation.

        • @Marshmelon:
Yes I took your advice and my second online chat also confirmed everything you said. Silly that they are not consistent. Also can confirm that cricket will be extra $15 per month as it is bundled under optus sport. However it is free for all mobile phone plans

        • +1

@Chirpy: I understand that that is the case in theory, but numerous people with the same time remaining, on the same contract, are being told completely different things.

        • A note 8 plan with 15gb+ will cost more than $110 per month.

        • @Chirpy: Am I the only one asking to waive those fees with success?

        • @maximage: This is a job for Tracey Grimshaw

    • +1

I'm not 100% sure but I believe optus fees typically work the same way as Telstra. Working at Telstra if it is a sim only plan the cancellation fee's are waived if you are recontracting on another plan.

    • As others have suggested, I tried different agents (via online chat) before coming across one that was happy to upgrade me for no fees.

My cancellation fee was $107.91 for 10 months remaining.

I asked them if I could recontract for a further 12 months and if it was possible to do so without any fees, and this one finally said yes!

  • +1

Is this $36 p/mth for the entire 12 months?

    • +2

yep $36 a month for the 12 months if you have access to an .edu email address

  • My contract is about to end actually, how good is their coverage from people's experience?

I came from Virgin, then TPG to Telstra and it was a huge relief with the connectivity (4 years ago)

*I live 30 mins from the CBD

    • You shouldn't have any issues in Glenelg. Optus have always been good to me but since I have been trying Vodafone (Kogan) I have been really impressed with the data speed, and visual voicemail is awesome. I am reluctant to go back to Optus because the network seems really congested and oversubscribed.
YMMV but these days there isn't really a carrier with bad coverage, it just depends if there is a black spot near you.

      • I have a work optus and private Telstra phone. Both iphone6

They sit next to each other 90% of the time.

Coverage is good on both. No major differences.

But bandwidth Telstra eats Optus for breakfast no question.

        • Yeah that's what I'm saying, Optus is the worst network now, but it's ok most of the time.

    • +1

To be honest,if not for the epl, I will cancel Optus immediately and never use it again. Worst ever network compared to Telstra and vodafone. Also vodafone $5 global roaming is a huge advance.
I asked Optus if I could pay $15 per month only for epl with answer no.
I am using Optus but I hate Optus more and more. I hope Telstra or vodafone could win the next epl out right.

      • What does global roaming do

        • +1

It cost you $5 extra everyday but still shares your data usage and international phone call in your plan.
So it's very convenient for a short oversea trip. No need to buy a local sim card and can still call/answer calls from Australia.

        • @scratchback: Thank you

  • +12

Great I can free stream Pandora for the next 2 weeks.

    • Pandora will withdraw from Australian market soon.

      • +11

        Hence the comment above…

  • +4

You have to wonder when Telstra are going to update their student deal

    • +1

      Or offering similar deal.

  • Can you still get $10 per month discount if you have home broadband? can that bring the price down to $26 per month then with the student discount?

    • The discount goes against the broadband I believe. Also, current BB plans don't have this discount option, they are all just $60 for unlimited regardless of what else you have.

  • Can I tack on free Netflix streaming for $10?

    • That's usually only available on 24 month plans.

      • When will they learn!

        • Push users to go on more expensive plans and longer terms with phones for more features. I think they learnt.

        • @OnlinePred:

That's why I buy phones outright now. It's cheaper.

          They lost out.

        • @T1OOO: not everyone does that, infact I would say it is the extreme minority. So they would win. As long as your are on their network they win. And it's only cheaper if you buy import or cheap phones.

  • What happens after the 12 months? Is it still the same price month to month?

    • Was on the same plan previously

  • Online only? I had problems verifying my drivers licence (NSW and still valid) when applying for the last deal online.

  • Anyone know of an AUD$5 per month plan
just to keep the phone number and receive calls/txts

I do all my communication online now not over phone
    (twitter/skype/wire/telegram/etc)

  • I'm paying $14 per month for this plan for the 10gb… Considering moving to this though for the extra 5gb considering 1gb is already an extra $10. Also I have a new number from amaysim I want. Optus won't let me change number and remain on my $14 plan… =(

    • +1

how are you paying $14 a month for this plan from optus?

      • was a $20 bundled discount with Broadband. + $20 online discount + $6 uniday discount.

        • How on earth did you get an already special deal, half price and with a uni discount? Also how much are you paying for optus broadband

        • @OnlinePred:

I am not paying anything for Optus Broadband. I listed my billing address at my parents. I think they are paying $95. We have separate bills but they applied the discount to my account =]!

        • @R3XNebular: so how did you get a triple discount?

        • @OnlinePred:

Just called up and asked for the $20 broadband discount that was going on at the time. 40-26=14. Not so great though seem to be going over a gb… Think I'd prefer the $30 15gb. Might just wait though seems like the plans are just getting better.

  • koganmobile gives the
    Same service for 40% off.
    Why should I choose optus?

    • Different network. Your choice.

    • KoganM doesn't include international calls? And doesn't have the roaming function.

      • WHat roaming do?

        • +1

If you linked your mobile to your bank and your mobile service does not include roaming, you wouldn't be able to receive any security code for banking when you are overseas.

    • No they don't? All I'm seeing on the Kogan site is a 37$ prepaid recharge for 10GB or a 50$ recharge for 14GB. Kogan is more expensive for less data.

Where do I get 15GB per month for 26$ on Kogan?

edit: Wow I had to go thru Google, the Kogan site was useless. I see it now. Still, no unlimited Spotify…

      • Kogan mobile website man.

        Double check pls

        • I did. Did you see my edit? Double check pls

  • +2

whats the go with the student discount? no longer a 'current' student but still have access to my email address, ie. Do they check anything other than the email address?

    • +2

They do not check anything other than the email, I believe you login through unidays to verify :)

      • Thanks mate, appreciate it. Currently on a $19 plan with 1.5GB data; this seems very tempting (even without the student discount)!

        • How do you survive on 1.5GB :o. I struggle to stay under my 10GB lol.

        • @fudge911: it's not easy… haha

  • Multiple sims on one account?

  • I've only just purchased the $40 plan about 2 weeks ago (12gb?) is it possible to upgrade for free?

    • There isn't a way unless you pay the cancellation fee then sign up for this one

      • +1

Not true. I've reconstructed when they've upped the data and haven't had to pay any fees since it's upgrading your plan. However according to the comments here there is a little confusion.

At the end of the day, you should be able to upgrade to this offer without paying anything extra.

  • Renewed my plan from Last Year and kept my student discount and free data sharing sim. Thanks OP

    • Wouldn't mind an extra 5gb a month, but afraid of losing my 3 data sharing sims. How certain are you that you've kept your sharing sim?

      • WHat's sharing SIm? is that data pooling how?

  • Any luck using the student promo code? It says the code is invalid… just received and copy n pasted it.

  • Thanks OP had the 10gb $40/month plan for a while, so just upgraded to this one. An extra 5gb doesn't hurt.

    • +1

did you have to pay a cancellation fee?

      • Nah I signed up ages ago (over the 12 month contract) though. Was an option on the website when I was logged in to upgrade to this plan

  • +1

Was on the $50 12M sim only plan contract with 15gb data and $500 international call credit however decided to jump on this one as its $10 cheaper and I don't even make any international calls so it didn't bother me that this has only $300 credit. Had two months left on the $50 contract, so I talked to someone on optus chat and she waived the $15 cancellation fee as I have been a loyal optus customer.

    I feel old

  • Hello,

I was on the $45 My Sim Plus (12GB) plan from last year and the contract would of ended December 2017.
Spoke to Tyler S on Optus Live chat and she upgraded me for free to this plan ($40, 15GB). I clearly still had 5 months left on my contract from last year but she waved the fee.

I kept it plain and simple and this is exactly what I wrote to her -
"Hi, looking to upgrade to the sim only 12 month (15GB) plan. However, if there's any fees in upgrading then I won't proceed"

    Good luck.

  • I am on this at the moment, need a .edu.au email address to quality, I had some problems signing up for some reason until I kicked a stink on the phone because my application form was rejected at the credit check level, eventually spoke to the right person who apologized to me and said the rep will be spoken to and they approved my application over the phone. I believe when this deal was first released was 12gb and $36 per month.

  • I just upgraded. Rep told me in live chat that I didn't need to pay any fees because there was no early upgrade fee on my plan. Took a screenshot of everything, so hopefully everything works out. I was previously on the 10GB for $40 a month plan

    • Was this with live chat?

      • yes in the 'My Optus' app.

  • Can anyone confirm if student price is $36 per month for life?
