Note that you have to use a power plug to supply power to the hard drive or else the computer cannot read it.

    • USB powered.

This is the 2.5' Portable HDD, so no it does not require an external power supply.

I wonder if this is available in all JB Hifi stores. I'll be checking it out.

EDIT: Just me being overly cautious. My bad, ignore.
Uhh. Is this genuine. Look at the url
    www.jbhifionline.com.au
    now google jbhifi
    www.jbhifi.com.au
Is this a phisher? Or just an alternate url?

    • damn.. u might be right! i've never encountered a phisher site before, So im not really sure..

      • Nah, just looked odd as i've always used www.jbhifi.com.au, but it links to www.jbhifionline.com.au on products. Just overly-cautious.

        • I presumed it was where you'd actually purchase stock - I've bought DVDs off the site with no problems.

    • +3

jbhifionline.com.au is actually their online store. If you look right at the bottom of their main page, you can see a link to jbhifionline.com.au in between 'Mobile' and 'Terms of Use'.

Also when you try to buy items from the main site, it takes you to jbhifionline.com.au.

Yeah, a bit confusing with the two separate domain names they seem to be using.

      • Yeh, definately odd. Especially since the two sites seem to have different layouts. I'm just very wary of the phishing sites out there. Good deal though.

        • +1

nothing wrong with being wary. I know a lot of people who will click on and trust anything - they are the kind of people who's computers are always full of malware.

can anyone confirm its only usb powered ?

There was the recent Toshiba 1TB pocket drive for $118 at HN that sold out pretty quick.

That one was USB powered but slighthly thicker than 2.5" thus wouldnt fit a ps3.

Can anyone confirm this one is 2.5" and can be taken out of case.

Also can OP put upload reciept as JB stores will match only if they see reciept.

    • Manage to google the product site here. It is USB powered.

      Weird, on the manufacturer's website:

      Warranty 3 years

JB Hifi is only offering 2 years.

    • Might just be because they can't fit enough platters in there to make up 1TB, hence they have to make it thicker to accommodate.

    • Even their portable 640gb freeagent hard drive is thicker than the standard 2.5". Doubt this will be thinner than that.

  • So how do we get it for $99???

  • +3

    OP, please share your receipt.

    • Might pick this up myself tomorrow morning, receipt would be great.

Note: Hmm… seems like these drives tend to fail, similar issue to some of the 500gb 3.5" I have from Seagate.

  • +2

There are going to be 1tb hdd from hp at target for $95 tomorrow, looks more aesthetically pleasing IMO, not sure about specs though

    • Think that one is 3.5" drive (and therefore it would have a power pack).

    • If its the one i think it is, a HP one, look it up first. It has HORRIBLE reviews. Also, 95 isn't really good for a 1tb 3.5".

  • +1

    is the $99 drive 3.5" or 2.5"???

    online it's $99 for the 3.5" drive :/
    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/computers-laptops/computer-ac…

    • This isn't an online deal, it is instore.

    • +2

Yea I think the OP has got it mixed up with the 3.5" drive. Just happens to be a coincidence that the 3.5" model is $99.

Neg for lack of details in description(2.5" or 3.5") and no proof by anyone that this deal is actually available. Will remove neg when proved there is a valid deal.

      • +1

I'm sorry haven't been online till now - receipt and box is at home - will send thru details in about 4hrs when I'm home. To be honest - I had no idea about the 3.5 or the 2.5. I walked into the store yesterday, saw a 1TB external harddrive for $99 and grabbed it. Sorry for all the confusion.

  • heres an actual one for 99 dollars. same as above.

  • +3

Maybe the OP bought the $99 3.5 drive and mistakenly thinks It's a 2.5?

  • +1

    receipt kthx

    • +1

Agree. Need proof that you got it for $99 don't want to waste time going to a retail store if they don't have this available at that price. Copy of receipt would be great.

  • +1

+1 neg vote for what obviously is not a bargain…
    until proof is provided

    • why neg me when this is clearly not a bargain?
      or it is listed wrong…
can we just delete this bargain post as being dumb?

  • +1

Yeah either the OP doesn't know the difference between the portable and non portable version or he just got lucky and the JB hifi saleperson didn't know the difference and he got the portable version for the non portable price.

    OP please provide proof!

  • I just went and checked, it's the 3.5" version. They don't have any 2.5" seagate 1TB portable hdds.

    • +3

Yeh, checked it out as well… it's the 3.5" version

  • +3

There's no way a 2.5", portable, USB powered drive would sell for the same price as a 3.5"

Who the hell deleted my post? I bought the damn thing from the very same shop so I should know. If you want to be a mod, please do your job properly.

I originally posted that the actual unit needs to be powered by a nearby power point or else the hard drive won't run. IN OTHER WORDS, it is NOT USB powered.

    • um…your comment is hidden, not deleted….presumably as it got a couple of negs……click on 'show hidden posts'

and presumably it got negged because it was incorrect…..
      http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/computers-laptops/computer-ac…

      USB powered.

      • or indeed correct….. :)

    • +2

lockee, like everyone said, your post was not removed. It just got voted down, hence hidden for some. Tick the 'Show all hidden comments' box at the top, and you'll see your hidden posts.

      Fair comment, but:

      1) It's not a job, I'm volunteering.
      2) I did not remove your comment, and I didn't vote it down either. I just replied to your comment.
      3) We're not perfect, even mods do make mistakes from time to time.

      • +1

Not a fair comment. And point 3 is irrelevant, the site hid his comment not you. Lockee shouldn't be abusing you mods just because he can't find his way around the site.

  • We have the 1tb Seagate 3.5" externally powered drive and it starts to click extremely loudly whenever the disk is quite full and it has to seek to other sectors for the one file. If you defrag the drive it goes away, but I am guessing it's a design flaw, makes movies unplayable as it seeks, gets more errors, seeks again. Have a 2.5" Seagate with no such problem, so probably just the 1TB model.

DSE have one atm for $99
WD Elements 1TB Desktop Hard Drive
    http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/en/product/XH12…
it'll be 3.5" of course and need AC (no, not air con).

  • For those who think the OP said 2.5", the OP only said "portable" which is part of the heading given on the link.

As to whether it's a bargain, well, you can get cheaper external 3.5" 1TB hard drives so it depends if you have to have that particular model or not and which stores you have access to. (Plus other details to do with the features of that particular model)

    • OP said 'expansion', which is a portable usb powered drive

      • oh, my apologies; thanks for the correction :)

        • actually….looks like they're both portable and 'wired'….but both have the same name……confusing :)

          • @andy19363: as per my post above "Expansion" is a trademark of seagate. The question is whether it is the Portable or the External drive.

Both drives are portable and external, but one is larger and requires separate AC power.

            Seagate is just being stupid.

  • Dick Smith have this in 3.5" for $99 regular price. Not a bargain.

  • Here's a review on the JB Hi-fi website:

    epic fail
    by seven on 24.08.2010

Got this drive, and since first plugging it in, it clicks all the time, pauses during movie playback and is slow to transfer files. Seagate will charge you to replace it. Known fault - there's a 33 page thread in the seagate forums detailing the issues. check it out before buying.

So is this USB powered or not?
