AMEX Explorer Business Card (100,000 Bonus Points +50k Loyalty Bonus Each Year) - $395 Fee Per Year

230

AMEX have today launched the business version of the much-loved Explorer Card. New Card Members will receive an introductory 100,000 Membership Rewards Bonus Points when applying by 2 October 2017 and spending $3,000 in the first 3 months from the Card approval date. Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any other Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer.

The card comes with an uncapped points earning rate, a generous loyalty bonus each year, a low interest rate and other perks to save you time and money – it’s quite possibly the best business credit card currently available on the market.

Both the Business and Consumer Explorer cards come with a $395 annual fee. The advantage of the Explorer business card vs the Explorer consumer card is the 50k bonus points each year (provided you spend $100k) and the lower interest rate. However, you don't get the $400 travel credit. Personally, I'd value the 50k points much higher than the travel credit.

Main Perks:
- 50,000 Membership Rewards Bonus Points when you spend $100,000 every 12 months from your Card approval date
- 2 entries per calendar year to the American Express Lounge at Sydney International Airport T1
- A low interest rate of 16.99% p.a. on all purchases

Ongoing points earn
You’ll pick up 2 points per $1 spent on all purchases except government bodies in Australia (including the ATO) where you will earn 0.5 points per $1 spent. The rate for Government spend is actually quite decent, when you consider that many other cards don’t pay out points on this category at all. And there's no points cap - ever!

Eligibility
You need to be aged over 18 and to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident. Your reportable personal gross (pre-tax) annual income must be (a very low) $24,000 or more.

Annual fee
The card comes with a $395 annual fee – the same you’ll pay for the Explorer consumer card. Your annual Card Membership fees may be tax deductable when your Card is used solely for business purposes.

Other AMEX credit card deals
I'm currently promoting a number of other lucrative AMEX consumer credit card deals, which have been released in the wake of the RBA changes which came into effect on July 1. Check out my credit card page for more information.

Note that I run an AMEX affiliate partner site, The Champagne Mile but this deal will take you through to the main AMEX link (I receive no commission)

  • Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any other Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer.

  • How can you combine this with the referral link to get bonus 30k points?

    • You can't. This is a newly released business card, and there are no referrals available as yet. The Explorer card doesn't link to this product.

  • Let down

Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any other Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer.

May be cancel my current card and wait for 18 months.

Unfortunately that is the case with all AMEX cards these days. The only exceptions to this rule are the David Jones AMEX and the David Jones Platinum AMEX, where anyone is eligible for bonus points, as long as they haven't held a DJ AMEX card in past 18 months.

I think its worthy to point out that the main difference people would possibly be wanting to know is that there's no $400 travel credit (and instead replaced by a bonus 50k points per $100k spend per annum?)

    • Good point, thanks

    • that is not a bad thing. $50k points is worth more than their crappy $400 voucher but $100k spend requirement is out of reach for many ppl.

I'll take 50k points over $400 travel credit any day of the week

Yes and yes, but I'm pointing out as:

        1. That is really the main difference between the Biz v.s Personal Card and
        2. For those very small businesses that do not get to spend over $100k per annum (or perhaps cannot find enough AMEX expenses to put through $100k, unless something like RewardPay or similar is used which is another expense which may or may not be worth the 50k bonus / annum)

then the $400 travel credit would be better value for them.
If it was 50k points in place of $400 travel credit straight up, then agreed anyone would take the 50k bonus points any day but the extra spending condition makes the 2 benefits not equal to each other.

  • No travel credit on this card?

    • No - but you get 50k points each year loyalty bonus if you spend $100k on the card each year, plus lower interest rate.

It will be difficult to spend $100k per year if without a business.

        • Fully refundable business trips?

Do you have to have a business to get the card? Silly question I know.

    • No. Eligibility advice from the AMEX website is as follows: You need to be aged over 18 and to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident. Your reportable personal gross (pre-tax) annual income must be $24,000 or more (very low threshold).

  • please let me know if anyone body applies thats an existing amex personal card holder and still gets the 100k points on this new business card then i might apply too in Oct?

  • How is this deal different from?: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/316865

Sorry just realised the 'business' bit of it

  • Since when was 17% a low interest rate?

    • It's lower than the interest rate of 20.74% on the Explorer card. All premium rewards cards hold relatively high interest rates to help fund the rewards. I would always advicate paying off in full in order to avoid any interest charges.

  • will amex apply the 2 card limit rule if one already holds 2+ amex issued personal cards and applies for a business card will they be forced to close an existing card before approving the new card?

    • Unsure about this - will check with AMEX and get back to you

I've had this card since the last promo. Never been able to book the free flight. I've tried three time (including this morning for 23/Sep SYD-ADL, it is start of school hols). In all cases, I was told they are all booked out for more than a week plus minus the dates that I was requesting. Has anyone been able to get their redemption other than mid week departure and return?

    • This isn't the same card - this is a Business version without the same features.

    • I thought the free flight has been replaced with travel credit on all cards. Not aware of any card that still has free flight?
