Great deal in my opinion from Telstra. Unfortunately I am on contract until next year.

    • Why not just claim your a uni student for the 10 dollar off?

    • I negotiated to get 10gb for $40 which is close enough. A sales rep told me I could get the unidays plan. When that turned out to be wrong they okayed me for a 5gb bonus on top of the $40mx

  • For anyone with another provider. If you are porting your number to Telstra there is a $10 monthly credit available. It is only available to "close" sales so if you just ask the salesperson nicely enough they should be able to apply it. The $50 byo plan is elligible for the discount. It currently ends on 31/07/2017.

Edit: Just realised this is Mx plan different from the M plans offered in stores. I would assume it would be possible to apply still if you got the right salesperson willing to do it. Not 100% though.

    • I mentioned this as a new customer and they said the discount has already applied coming down to $50 from the $60 MX plan.

      • Ah that could be the case. It looks like they increase the Mx plan base price from $50 to $60. Might be as good as it is going to get.

        • Also on chat with them right now. this was their comment -

I have checked our resources, the BYO Mx online offers are not eligible as those offers have great bonuses already as part of the online promotion.
The $10 port-in credit offer only applies to the regular BYO Plans (S, M, L) at this link - https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/plans-and-rates#

if this was a $40 10gb plan I'd jump at it.

at the $40 - 7.5gb plan - and I find myself needing to restrict using internet 2-3 days before cycle is over…

    • I mentioned above that I managed to negotiate this. The sales rep told me (incorrectly) that I could get the unidays but they allowed an upgrade of 5gb to the $40mx so practically the same thing.

  • I tried negotiating the 15gb for $50 but they won't budge.

    • +1

That's strange. I was out of contract and negotiated the $70 (15gb) down to $50 no problems.

Then my coworker received a text message giving them 5 GB of free data.

I called them and said I got the text but the data never appeared, so they chucked an extra 5 gigabytes onto my plan. 20gb for $50 a month :)

  • Good plan. Got the same (2GB less data) for 60/m 3 months ago. Not sure if I can get a adjustment…

Good signal, fast 4G/LTE (no more congestion like Optus…). Visual Voice Mail is free for the plan (iOS).

    • Talked to customer service via 24x7 chat, was told I can simply sign up the new plan to switch over (the same Go Mobile Plus 60/m) to the new one without incurring any fees.

Good (save 10/m with 2GB more data).

This folks is what makes this a great deal - Unlimited calls to 10 selected countries. (China, India, UK, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, USA and Canada)

But wait for it, this includes to MOBILE PHONES also. Thats a cracking deal

  • Did I just get gipped?
Just Monday I moved from a casual monthly plan to one they had advertised, $1000 wroth of calls (that's tons for me) 8GB of data and unlimited SMS for $40 PM (actually $50 PM with a $10 credit per month).

    • This is the best the chat team can do for me as well. Might stay where I am for awhile (off-contract) and see.

  • Can we use the $50 in the play store? (Android devices).

I ask as my current telstra pre-paid offer allows me to use the entire amount I recharge in the play store.

Currently pay $40. 28 days, unlimited calls and texts with 3gb data. But buying games, music or in-app purchases with $40 of basically 'free money' is so good that it's hard to change plan…

    • Don't think you can use the credit towards Play Store purchases. I am on the same pre-paid offer as you (Freedom Plus) paying $50 for 4gb of data and using my credit towards Google Play Subscriptions, in-app purchases and Netflix.

      • Ha - It's a great offer we have. Don't want to give it up!

        Thanks for your reply.

    • I'm on the same pre paid offer. I buy Netflix and YouTube red with my credit.hahaha.

I was able to get the $70 plan 15GB for $50, live chat > disconnections and just said i was thinking of moving from Telstra but wanted to see what they could do for me before i did. They offered the $70 plan for $50 and then $50 plan for $40.

I was able to negotiate an extra 2GB ontop for the $50 plan for my partner, so it ended up being $40 for 10GB, $1000 worth of calls.

This was approx 2 weeks ago.

    • awesome! have you been a Telstra customer a long time?
wondering if i have a chance with this as I've only been a Telstra customer 1 whole year.

      • +1

I have been with them for 7 years i think but i was able to do it for my partner who was just out of a 2 year contract

  • How about student discount, would it be $40 for 12GB?

    • That's more an Optus thing.

  • some people dont think this is $600 a year, not a small amount. not sure why someone would need 12GB…. full time youtubers?

    • +3

You shouldn't find it that hard to wrap your head around mobile data usage nowadays. Music streaming, Pokemon Go, youtube, tethering to other devices… it all adds up.

    • +2

I won't be surprised even if someone needs more than 50GB per month, not to mention 12GB.

      • 50GB is pushing it a bit isn't it? Unless the person is streaming 24/7, I find it hard to believe anyone can use 50GB pm lol

        • My home internet connection is setup via ADSL and 4G network would be much faster than that. I would be happy to use 4G if Telstra offers a good mobile broadband deal. Everyone is different, one can live without mobile and another may need more than 50 GB data per month, that's normal.

    • internet is getting fatter…
no one knows how to code/compress images/webpages…
back then 800x600 monitors commmon..now its all optimize for 4k etc etc

      everything loads 10x more adverts
      more video ads too…

      cant help it…

10 yrs ago was surviing on 1.5gb
      then 3.5gb
      now my 7.5 isnt enough

      plus streaming music from cloud…

  • Hi all, yesterday I live chatted to Optus regarding an iPhone 7 128gb deal. Told them I was gonna sign with Vodafone on their $89 plan. They responded with their $130 plan on a $100 promo PLUS an additional 25% off so I'm getting an iPhone 7 with 30gb data and Optus Sport, Nat Geo, music streaming incl Spotify for only $75/month! Not sure if it's cause I'm an Optus customer already or if they are waiting on the iPhone 8 rele ase but it seems like crazy value…

Edit: forgot about mobile tv streaming and 1gb roaming data/month too!

    • This is the promo that is available to new subscribers only, I tried and they knocked me back. Can you tell me who you spoke to and also were you already out of contract or coming close to end?

    • I've tried this and I'm told the 25% is only for customers already on postpaid who are adding another postpaid service.

    • I've tried this and I'm told the 25% is only for customers already on postpaid who are adding another postpaid service.

      • Correct. I'm already on a postpaid service. Spoke to a guy named Doug. Although I wouldn't be surprised if his real name was Doupreet…

  • Don't forget if you are with Telstra and off contract you can port out then in with a cheap $2 sim on different provider.

    Cheers,

    Adrian

  • I am now on Telstra, i guess the only good thing about them is the coverage, other than that, pretty much like Optus.

I rarely go to regional areas, i can't comment on being best coverage (assume is as is expensive and good forum comments).

I mainly in pakenham line area all the time, and vodafone gives me the best speed coverage in general after 2 months on telstra moved over recently.

Melb CBD is also perfect for voda, maybe certain underground is not, but i am not based there anyways.

just my opinion, overall, quite satisfy with Telstra, though was expecting more.

    • +1

Coverage is way better than Optus.

Optus data has congestion issues, I cannot even open web pages if I go to the shopping centre near where I live (very close to Optus' Sydney HQ - ridiculous).

      • Telstra for me where i went recently, also has congestions. I say v Optus because Vodafone did not have for me.

        • That should be a wealthy suburb ;-)

        • @terrywang:
Haha thanks. Vodafone best ones are in the wealthy suburbs lol… telstra is everywhere

  • Unlimited International talk & text to China, India, UK, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, USA and Canada.

  • +2

Wish I had more data and every now and then I consider changing to post-paid but still I'm satisfied with my prepaid setup:
    - Recharge $40, have a Telstra balance of $40
    - Pay for Office 365 Family, Play Music Family and any apps I want
    - Buy more data if needed, which also adds to Telstra balance, use that on other apps/services
    - Ends up being ~$10 for 3gb with unlimited calls/texts, assuming I was going to pay for Office and Play Music.

    • Same, I just recharge $30 since I hardly ever go over 1.5GB. But when I do go over, it becomes really inconvenient.
Gotta manually recharge another $30 and then cancel the automatic recharge. Or get a $10 data top up which is wasteful when there's only a couple of days left before the automatic $30 recharge.

      • Yeah this is exactly what happens to me. I guess I just need to buy more data earlier instead of when it's gone because I don't lose the money really anyway.

      • But so long as you run out of data in the last quarter of the recharge, then $/time comes to the same anyway. Just make sure you always have another $30 to recharge if you need to do it early. I’ve linked mine to my PayPal and saved the password on my phone so I can recharge even if I run out, which I never do on the $40 recharge.

        • So you don't do automatic recharge at all? My phone would run out of credit at the most inconvenient times which is why I prefer automatic.

    • This is android only. There’s no real use for the bonus Pre-Paid plus credits on iOS.

  • Hmm it's not bad, depends what you need I guess. I have 10GB $1000 of calls for $40/month (with Telstra not an MX plan). Somebody would have to call A LOT to get over the $1000 each month. $10 seems like quite a bit for an extra 2GB and I know a lot of people jumped on the same deal I'm on late last year. But for people that call heaps, it's a great deal. Good find OP.

  • +1

Was on the $40 7GB plan which expires next month…

Spoke to Chat (disconnections) just now to get..

*Since you've been with us for quite some time now and you have a good payment history record, we are happy to offer you $20 discount on Medium plan to make it $50 per month for total of 15Gb data allowance.

    So it is possible.

    • +1

I just lined up 10GB for $40 per month and unlimited calls. Happy with that.

      • Does that include International calls?

    • Had 0 luck with sales - went to disconnections and it was a yep - lets do this.

      $50 - 15GB

    • Same, went to disconnections got it straight away

  • +1

This is very tempting - but don't think I can give up my $5 roaming with Vodafone

    • Plus Vodafone has visual voicemail for free. Telstra don’t even offer it for Pre-Paid and I think they charge $5 month for the honour of visual voicemail.

      • VVM is free on post paid account.

        • It’s free? I think I might go on this plan just for this. I loathe dialling message bank just to listen to messages.

        • @AustriaBargain: never paid for it for my iPhone.

        • @Chuppa:
What plan are you on? When I checked last there was a $5 fee, it wasn’t available at all for Pre-Paid, and the only way to talk them into waiving the $5 fee was to negotiate oz bargain style.

        • @AustriaBargain: Just a standard postpaid plan. If you want confirmation, just jump on live chat.

  • I'm now on $50 for 19GB a month with Telstra. They gave me a bonus 5GB recently…. this after last years negotiations for $50 for 13GB https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/259574#comment-3893182 Somewhere along the line I also got a bonus 1GB a month too…

I'm pretty happy with my Ozbargaining and freeloading ;)

  • So after chatting with the online chat, they advised that if you have a loyalty credit applied to your account, you might have to talk with the credit team to get this plan along side the plan listed in OP.

Might be better to visit the store and see if they can do anything, I remember they were able to match the online offers for me last time.

    • Go to store, sometimes they do better deal and have physical people to talk to if have any issues. Their online is crap. Don't communicate or coorperate with stores.

      • That's what I heard and I remember even the store staff questions why the online staff can't do it.

  • +1

I'm suitably intrigued at the 75 positive votes. I must be missing something obvious & so I'm asking before I down vote the deal.

How is this a better 'bargain' than the Optus 15GB for $40pcm, which includes free music streaming too?

Telstra have better coverage but for the vast majority of people it will make no difference. I've used both in cities.

Pay 25% more & receive 20% less GB. What am I missing?

    • +3

      because TELSTRA > OPTUS

      • +1

Receiving negative votes for merely asking a legitimate question & asking for clarity is mighty peculiar.

I fail to see how this is more of a bargain over the Optus deal considering it is vastly inferior on price & GB. Odd!

        • similar with you compare optus with kogan/woolworths

          OPTUS > KOGAN
          OPTUS > WOOLWORTHS

        • +2

Becos Telstra trumps Optus for a lot people, even in the CBD.
I have two phones, 1 for work on Telstra, and 1 Optus for personal.
Optus gives me E and H+ or (inside) and 4G or 4G+ with 1 or 2 bars nearly most of the day (Quite unusable). Unless im outside waving the phone in a figure of 8, I'll never get full bars on Optus. (yes…figure of 8)…

Telstra gives me 4G consitently even in the lift or train tunnels, fullbars or close to. It can't be a phone issue as I swapped the sims around on the 2 different phones, I get the same experience on the respective sims.

Telstra > Optus, Im considering dumping my $40 15GB Optus plan, and pay the $112 Termination fee and go back to Telstra. $112 well spent to be honest..thats how bad it is.

        • @imahapyboy:

It's a stange analogy. Optus/Kogan/Woolworths are all very different companies. Optus & Telstra are both businesses in the same industry. 1st/2nd for coverage.
Kogan/Woolworths will suffer significantly in the customer service area I expect & possibly in coverage too. They would be non comparable to Telstra.

        • @Kuro: Genuinely curious. May I ask what city you're in? I find it difficult to imagine it being as dreadful as you say in a densely populated city.

        • +1

          yeah

          1st coverage - telstra
          2nd coverage - optus

answer is clear, telstra > optus

        • @imahapyboy:

Then check the difference in coverage between 1st & 2nd… It's nothing, ergo they are comparable companies. Even more so, coverage will be the same in cities.

If I had mentioend say Vodaphone (4th I believe), then that is not comaprable because of the distinct % difference.

        • +1

          okie… you win…. hahah….. i still prefer telstra

        • +2

@Carpe Diem: Melbourne mate. Work in Docklands, live in Abbotsford (3km from CBD). Most of my bad experience and as I type right this moment is in Docklands. I actually tether my Optus phone to my Telstra phone most days. So bad..! Have chatted with Optus, nothing helps.

        • @Kuro:

Sydney myself & only one black spot I know of. Must say I'm shocked to hear that about Melbourne, another reason why you're the second best city in Oz ;) Seriously though, perhaps it's the handset? As Optus not working in Melbourne just seems not possible for them to not have it covered sufficiently i.e. I would expect any provider, even Vodaphone to work in any major city

        • +1

          @Carpe Diem:

In Sydney, been with Telstra for years before switching over to Optus because of their free music streaming. The difference is night an day. I get constant drop outs during peak hour train rides, so much so that even music streaming stutters, I get much more blackout areas, and have a much greater variation in my network speeds.

Telstra is by far the better network even within the cities, and there is a reason people are willing to pay more.

        • +1

@Kuro: @Carpe Diem: I live in Adelaide and work 1 week per month in/next to Docklands and I get little to no signal on Vodafone too. 8th floor of an all glass building and half of the building I get no signal at all, that's one reason I'm looking at Telstra so I don't have to walk across the building to use my phone. Glad I saw this comment so I know not to go Optus.

        • +2

@mark-emark: Glad I could help. I've been complaining to Optus again, to see if I could terminate my plan early and have the exit fee waived. No deal, they said everything was fine. I'm in the same situation as you Mark, only half the building gets any reception. I've even had to root my phone to scan the 4G bands. I get weak B3 inside the building and OK B40 outside the building. On telstra sim, strong B3 and B7 simultaneously or interchanging…, mentioned this to the Optus rep, they didnt' want to hear it. I've since joined Telstra, waiting for the new SIM to arrive. Shall pay the exit fee, and swear to never return to Optus mobile.

    • Because Telstra is like wiping your arse with silk.

      • I prefer toilet paper but whatever floats your boat.

  • Anyone on contract been able to switch with fees waived?

  • I’m currently doing Telstra Pre-Paid plus $40 a month. I like Telstra for the unmetered Apple Music, but I don’t want to contract. Is there a better offer than the $40 Pre-Paid plus?

  • I reckon if you are thinking of going $40 Sx plan than Telechoice may give Telstra a run for its money.
I know it doesn't have the same customer service, apple music and rest of the Telstra perks but it uses Telstra network and for $29 you get 5.5gb with unlimited talk. Worth thinking over… just saying….

    • My wife is just out of contract. I was expecting to be pushing the button on this Telstra deal this evening, but your post has intrigued me.

She doesn't use Apple Music (we run Spotify) so uses just calls,SMS, and some data. This Telechoice deal looks good.

I see it's noted to use "part of the Telstra 3G and 4g network". Is it the same reception as Telstra, or does it favour 3G, therefore sucking as a service?

      • I'm on Telstra thru work phone but my waifu's personal mob is on telechoice. Coverage and Speed looked comparable to Telstra. However, I'm sure MVNO partners or the resellers may be slightly disadvantaged through max speed. Having said, missus is very happy with it for the last couple of years.

        • Perfect, thanks. I'm in the exact same boat; my phone is a work phone on Telstra, and the wife has the $45 deal from 24 months ago, wiith a free phone (which we sold).

Think I'll join Club Telechoice for the wife.

  • And just like that, I got my plan upgraded from $40/8GB to $40/10GB.
    Thanks OP!!

  • No luck for me best I could get them to do is 12g for $50 :(

  • -3

stick to amaysim - it uses the telstra network and you can pay 35 a month. telstra have been taking advantage for way too long, winter is coming
