Been looking for an internal hard drive to operate my new gaming PC I've had built and have had a hard time finding something that's cost effective yet demands performance. From my search this morning this seemed to be a fairly good deal as it's in my price range! yay

If gaming I'd go the Black.

agree, this drive is designed for 24/7 NAS NOT desktop pc performance. definately got the black! worth the extra $$

      • thanks cookie9 and scuderiarmani

have posted the WD black offer that looks to be a bargain below. Would value your feedback on that!

        • looks good if you can justify the price. Not sure if the performance is maintained with the increasing size drive, would be worth having a look at reviews.

I run a SSD for the OS/apps and have a 2tb WD black for games etc. I have about 200 steam games and heap of uplay, battlefield etc and 2tb is plenty.

Obviously games on SSD is the ultimate but another level in price!

I run 1TB SSD for games, and spindle as games archive ….. games I might want to play again one day and not wait for a download again.

      Once you go black …….

If gaming I'd go the Black.

      God no.

      Games need SSD.

      • -6

Uh no, the OS does. Large game collections aren't feasible on ssd

    • SSD = Speed. HDD is not.
For big size, Samsung released 16TB SSD on 2016.
For Ultimate speed currently, go for PCIe SSD.

Care to tell me the price of the 16TB SSD?

SSDs have their place, large personal storage isn't one of them yet, and for quite some time to come.

Would take this over an extra 2TB but that's just me.

      • Seems like a great buy, $350 over $419(pickup from local store), I have a 2tb black and it's been awesome but now it full and in need of a bigger drive.

    • Why hasn't this been posted as an ozbargain deal?

  • Stress I have no concrete evidence on this and am no expert but….I got one of these Seagates from the B&H recent deal. While a perfect device for storage and working faultlessly in that regard I have noticed a program that runs from the drive (an old Excel) is a consistent shade slow to do anything with - wasn't before I moved it via a drive clone - so maybe there is a performance hit with these as scuderiarmani and cookie9 have stated.

You shouldnt be installing programs or games on a drive like this anyway. They should all be on an SSD.

If you just need storage then grab an 8TB Seagate external and then put it in your PC by opening the case. $230 AUD delivered from Amazon.

SSD for operating system, commonly used (or all) programs and some games. If you have a large games library and rotate games frequently then consider an additional WD Black, or a larger SSD (less cost effective). Finally, a regular storage HDD for pictures/videos etc.

That 8tb Seagate is a terrible choice for anything bar cold storage backup. I've had several, they are painfully slow.

      • That's what's I'm suggesting he use it for.

Everything else should be on SSD.

      • My 5TB Seagate external from yesteryear can lag for quite a few seconds with things like music. Always needs to spin up. Wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy. Tried keeping it active and always spinning but it doesn't work out.

Yeah i do hope the OP didn't buy this HDD for gaming. As for me, i game on a Samsung 850 Pro SSD.

Games you are currently playing should be on SSD, while the rest of your library is on HD.

    Put it all on black….
