wrong model. op's model is using a imx291 sony sensor. the one in the link has an omnivision ov4689 sensor.

    • Any good dashcams that record both front(driver) and back?

      • get two a119s. one in the front and one in the rear.

        • +1

I think melfes means a camera that can record the front as well as inside the car, like a taxi.

        • @eug: thanks my man

i answered this question not long ago in another post, but can't seem to find it.

          found it.

I've been keeping an eye out for a deal like the last one - this is going to be my first dash cam, thanks OP!

    • Just a heads up, seller updated the listing.
About 20 mins ago it was Buy 2 and get 6% off. I had it in my Checkout (T= $231.63).

      Couldn't checkout until I viewed the update/description.
The change is now Buy 2, Get 3rd at 5% off, so it totals $246.42, a difference of $14.79
With the $20 off, it would've been $34.79 savings.

But the THANKYOU20 code doesn't work for me, as well.
I could've justified buying two at $211.63 …now I'm finding it hard to justify buying one for $123.21

      • Thanks for the heads up, I was one of the lucky ones to get it early with THANKYOU20 for 103.21

I have one of these, great dashcam.

    • Do you need to set the time/timezone of the device? If yes, can you please help me check if it supports Australia Central Time (GMT+9.30)? I know some Dash cam only supports timezone +- 1 hour.

      • +1

If you have the GPS module, you can turn on the GPS option and then select the +9.30 timezone. the time and date will then sync with the GPS.

        • so this particular DASH cam has the option to set the timezone to +9.30?

  • +1

I bought one of these about 2 months ago. dashcam seems great. The hardwire kit I got was dodgy (caused the dashcam to flicker and restart constantly) but I have been advised that they are sending me another one (waiting to receive it).

    • I had the same problem. The issue is actually with the terminals between the GPS base and the camera. Plug your USB cable into the camera instead of the base and that largely solves the issue. There is also some retrofit foam padding that the manufacturer supplies to make the connection more reliable — it's better, but it doesn't resolve the issue completely. There is actually a v2 version of the camera with redesigned terminals that does fix the problem completely. Anyone buying this camera should check that it is the v2 model (just in case the reason for the cheap price here is a clearance of the v1 model).

      • Thanks for the review. It does say in OP that it is V2. Does the sticker on these keep up in OZ sun when put on front windscreen of the car?

        • It's 3M VHB adhesive and took quite a bit of coercion to remove when my v1 camera was replaced with the v2 model under warranty — so I would be pretty confident to say that it should be fine.

        • @ceejay: Thanks. So, it is more like, fit and forget. Will replace my Navman dashcam which has HD quality. Might put that in the back.
I already have wiring done with mini usb. In pics, this one seems to be mini usb as well.

      • +1

The above issue is only applicable for the V2.

This bargain is for the V2. The new terminals and the foam solves the issue completely (apparently)

I've had mine hardwired in from the previous deal - and no issues with flickering/restarting.

      • Yea I read about that, but mine is plugged directly into the camera and not the base.

    • How hard is it to hardwire install? Does it take long?

    • The hardwire kit I got was dodgy (caused the dashcam to flicker and restart constantly)

it's unlikely that the hardwire is to blame.

have look at the pins on the dashcam.
      https://s3.amazonaws.com/cdn.freshdesk.com/data/helpdesk/att…

      • I had it connected directly to the camera, not the base. So those pins should not impact it at all.

  • Does this dash cam HAVE to be hardwired to work?

    • +4

No. The hard wire kit gives you the option.

      • Cool, been looking for a dash cam for some time, I'll be grabbing this one!

        • Hard wiring means you dont use a cigar lighter/Aux port to power it and you can do parking mode.

Depending on your car, some keep power to the Aux port when powered down, but then you need to make sure its turned off when voltage gets low or you will drain your battery.

With a hardwire kit, most use a fuse tap to wire them in which is reversable and then the hard wire unit turns off when voltage gets to your set level so you dont flatten the battery.

        • @Hellman109: Not sure this version of dashcam can actually do parking mode.

  • Can you fit in a rear camera on this model?

    • You could buy two and run them separately.

If you want an all-in-one front and rear solution, Street Guardian are bringing out a dual channel based on the same shape (but different internals).
      https://streetguardian.info/product/sg9663dc

The rep says maybe another month until release.

      • Looking at that it seems like you can get a better dashcam for cheaper price separately. I can't see the benefit having both in one.

        • There are pros and cons of going both ways.

Getting two separate units for cheaper is obviously the big pro.

However some people may prefer the combo option so they only need to hardwire one unit (the remote rear camera transfers power and video/audio over a single cable back to the front camera) and in turn only need one memory card.

        • +1

          @unco:
I've got two of the cameras. front and rear. The cameras only need one cable (usb to mini usb) and is easy to hide along the roof lining.
You will need two micro sd cards but they are cheap ($26 64GB samsung evo+).
Plus as they are 1440p they are very clear whereas some of the dual cameras are lower resolution for the rear.
Wired mine to be on permanently or via accessory via a switch. That way they can be recording while car is parked.
Car battery is good for about 3-4 days depending on capacity.

        • +1

@unco: Yeah, I prefer managing the camera footage at the front more accessible and with one sdcard and one power cable run.
Been looking at the B40S A118 on ebay.

        • @frigit: This one is 1080, not 1440.

        • @Trishool:
Oh yes, I have version 1 of A119 which is 1440p

  • Very good dash cam just make sure to buy a high endurance micro sd card to use with it.

    • +2

I notice Umart has the Transcend High Endurance available for pre-order for a fair price.

I think I'll grab a few of them - just going to use my existing cards for now.

      http://www.umart.com.au/newsite/goods.php?id=35480

    • I believe Samsung Evo UHS-1 are good enough. You don't need specific high endurance ones..

      • Can confirm samsung working well in ours. One thing I don't see mentioned when it comes to cards is if you buy a larger card, say a 64GB instead of a 32GB, in theory you will double the endurance. Because it will record twice as much footage before starting to rewrite the oldest footage. You also get the benefit of being able to go back through more footage to an incident if you need to.

  • How's the night vision on these?

There's some idiots around my area that like to come around at night and do burnouts/donuts so would love to catch them.

    • +1

I think this one stops when the car is turned off.

      • +1

there's a new firmware that just came out with parking mode

        • +1

Don't think the firmware is applicable to the A119S though. YET

        • @deeps:
Yeah it's in beta atm, i haven't tried it but i would expect it to become live in the next few months if you're willing to wait.
          https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/a119s-parking-mode-bet…

        • @bogak:

It looks like Viofo just uploaded the A119S Beta firmware to Facebook.

That's quite an unusual way to host beta firmware, I must say!

        • @eug: must be a Romanian thing

    • very good, even better with the CPL filter
      https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/viofos-a119s.26309/

      • Hrm, you'd expect low light performance to be worse with a CPL since it absorbs some light, wouldn't you?

        • Tbh I haven't noticed any negative drawbacks from using the cpl filter. I can still pickup number plates clearly at night with it

        • @bogak: Maybe it'll be even clearer without it. :)

        • @eug: maybe but at least with the cpl you can actually see what's happening rather than without it half the picture is your dash

  • thanks, had no idea I was 'Targeted'

  • i brought this last night….

    • +8

      Where to?

  • +1

Given that I'm clueless with electric work, I'm not even imagining that I would be capable of hardwiring this to my car without damaging something.
If I don't go with the hardwire option, do I just buy the car charger cable separately and keep it plugged into my cigarette jack?

    • +1

Hard wired means you wire it to your battery, or a fuse using a fuse tap. This is the neater, more permanent solution.

This also comes with a normal cigarette lighter plug, that you can use as well, but this isn't considered hardwiring, and isn't as neat - but a lot of people use it this way.

      • Yep, I knew what hardwired means and have watched a few videos of people installing it, but not game enough to deal with removing panels etc.

Any issues with using it via the cigarette jack?

        • +2

None whatsoever - just make sure your car turns off power to the cigarette jack. Some cars keep power to it even when the car is off.

        • +1

          @deeps:

Thanks. Bummer.. just found out that the $20 voucher code doesn't work for me :-(

    • +1

yes, its just a mini usb port, very easy.

  • Good deal, but has the code expired, it does not work for me

    • Code not working for me either :-/

    • Code not working for me either. Anyone having luck with the code on the ebay checkout screen?

    • It worked for me just now.

      • Just tried again, still not working for me :-/

  • +1

Which is the better version, the A119 or A119s? Reviews seem conflicting

    • +1

      Bought one anyway.

  • Thank OP. I just got me one !

  • +1

Rare use-case issue - Don't run the hardwire cable next to a DAB antenna cable. It destroys reception… must be a pretty dodgy 5V converter.

  • Are you sure this is V2? I don't see it stated as V2 anywhere on the ebay page.

  • I ordered one, and happy with the quality but I have had problems with the device dropping off my window. Sticker stays on the glass just the cam drops off the sticker.

    Should I order superglue also?

    • Sticker stays on the glass just the cam drops off the sticker.

you should check if the dashcam has been "clicked" in the mount properly. the mini usb cable should also be tight. the cable helps putting downward force on the dashcam so that it doesn't ride up and falls off the mount.

      • The mounts connected to the GPS, no issues there. The Cam & GPS sometimes drop off the sticker. So it dangles from the cord which is connected to the gps. I think the adhesive on my sticker that makes contact with the GPS module is poor, but the other side which is stuck on the glass is a lot better.

        • I think the adhesive on my sticker that makes contact with the GPS module is poor,

i see what you mean. there are two things that comes to mind. one, the adhesive pad that was used got dust or dirt on it when it was installed. two, the curvature on your windscreen is beyond the threshold which causes limited contact between the gps > pad > windscreen.

we have a a118c in the rear which is held in place using blu tack.

  • Great dashcam but dodgy hardwire kit. I had an electronics boffin mate check it out and the box is meant to shut off power in parking mode at 11.5Volts to protect your battery….didn't shut down until 10.3Volts. Not good for modern batteries and car electricals to go that low especially if car has stop start.

you may want ask your boffin about this.
      http://support.viofo.com/support/discussions/topics/19000015…

It takes 17 days to drain a 69Ah battery with 2 Watts of power consumption. For regular use, you dont need hardwire kits. In my car (Audi A3) I only had to move the cigarette lighter fuse one slot up to get permanent power instead of power after ignition.

      • +1

You don't have to drain a battery all the way for it to not have enough energy to turn the starter motor. The older a battery gets, the less capacity it will have too.
Car batteries don't like being deep-cycled too - it will shorten their lifespan.

        • These models use about 500mah. A 85ah battery can keep supplying power for two or three days and still crank the starter motor.

        • @whooah1979: Better not forget to disconnect it when going on holiday. :)
A 5W5 non-LED interior reading light bulb uses about 416mA, so it's pretty much like leaving that light on 24/7.

        • @eug:
best to get the largest battery then. it'll last longer.

        • @whooah1979: That's one way to do it, but larger batteries cost more, you'd probably be throwing away your existing perfectly-fine battery, and you're limited by the size of the battery compartment in your car.

Wouldn't it be much cheaper and easier to just get a hardwire kit that shuts the camera down when the voltage reaches a certain point, if parking mode is needed?

        • @eug:
          when in doubt, get both.

  • Can anyone recommend a good microSD card for this? I bought the dashcam in the last deal, and also a 64GB Lexar 633x from Kogan. Unfortunately, the microSD was refunded as Kogan were unable to supply it.

    • +1

you can use Samsung evo plus which is pretty good for this cam.

    • +1

      I use a Lexar High-Performance 32GB 633x microSDHC UHS-I card in mine. $26.90 on eBay
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-Lexar-High-Performance-32GB-6…

    • I suggest you get a high endurance card (no benefit from high performance in this application).

According to others, high endurance from Transcend, Lexar or Sandisk (in that order). I've got the Sandisk high endurance and that
      s been fine.

    • +1

64GB Samsung Evo - cheap and good

  • Has anybody got the newer V2 version with F1.8 lens to compare?

      • I'll wait for another seller to get it. That seller is full of BS which can be seen in the comments of the previous A119s deal

        • That dodge seller's name is Sydney.jj he commented earlier and his comments got deleted or unpublished but he comments with different names and trying to provide the same link

        • @xXxRoMeOxXx: i remember him doing that the last time there was this offer as well

    • this is the V2 version. i dont think theres a difference in the lens? pretty sure its the GPS module connectors that changes from v1 to v2

      • +1

There are some sellers with an updated V2 which has F1.8 lens. The first V2 had f1.6 lens.

  • Great camera but like everyone else has said, the hardwire kit is dodgy. My DAB+ reception has totally cut out (AM & FM are fine) due to the poor cable and interference from the power converter.
