David Jones American Express Card - $99 Annual Fee, 40,000 DJ Membership Rewards Points or 30,000 Qantas Points

741

Similar deal to this one but you get 50,000 DJ Membership rewards points with referral link or 40,000 without referral link (if you prefer Qantas points you can choose this option to get 30,000 pts without referral or 37,500 pts with referral). All you need to do is spend 3x outside David Jones.

If you are an existing Amex cardholder you will still be eligible for this offer as long as you do not have a David Jones Amex issued within 18 months. I believe this is a really good deal for those who applied for the explorer and a nice addition to the 100k bonus there! This is perfect if you are accumulating SPG points to redeem the Marriott's 7 nights package which requires 180k MR points.

Example: Explorer 100k + DJ Amex 50k + 2x 5k bonus for adding supplementary cardholder + refer 1 person to reach the 180k goal (or pool points with someone else).

This card has an annual fee of only $99, easy spending requirement and excellent transfer ratio to SPG! for more info you can refer to the original post.

Referral gets 20,000 MR points for each successful applicants

Note: for those who are trying to refer friends/family that does not travel much (i.e. to utilise SPG, QFF or other FF programs) an easy way to convinced them is to say 50,500 rewards points can be redeem for $350 credit in the account which effectively means they profit $251 ($350 - $99) just for applying this card. List of points required for credit are as follows:

Denomination Points Required
$50 8,000
$100 14,500
$250 36,000
$500 69,000
$1000 130,000

Personal or household gross (pre-tax) annual income of $40,000 or more is required.

Referral Links

Business Explorer Card: random (3)

Referrer: 40,000 Reward Points

Centurion Personal Charge Card: random (7)

Referee gets 200,000 MR points. Referrer gets 150,000 MR points.

Must admit there are bigger sign up bonuses around but for me I have managed to refer ten of my friends very easily given the low annual fee and the fact they spend regularly at David Jones.

This alone has given me 150k Qantas points which can take me business class return to HK.

    Great deal.

    • +1

…they spend regularly at David Jones.

As an ozbargainer you should talk them out of it!

      • +12

Not really… You realise David Jones price match right?

  • +1

Annual fee a real bummer as the card isn't great except for the signup pts.

    • -1

Compared to the explorer (which is a great deal) that has $395 annual fee? This is half the bonus points but 25% of the annual fee! Granted the explorer has travel credit but the Amex Travel website's prices is overpriced

      • People who sign up on the explorer will get their worth in travel credit though so that sort of cancels out the fee.

        • +2

The problem with the travel credit is that it has to be used all in one go, and it only applies to bookings through their system and you're limited in terms of flight carriers, hotels, and car rentals to only the ones they have a deal with, about 1/3-1/4 of what's available on expedia (in terms of hotels).

So $395 =/= $400 depending on where you plan to go and how you get there.

        • @buckster: Yep, still haven't managed to make use of my Explorer credit. As far as Amex-issued cards go, the Velocity Platinum is easier to make full use of.

    • +4

I have this card. Every year about a month before the annual return is due I ring up and threaten to cancel the card in the true ozbargin way. When i do, every year they have given me a 30,000 points 'bonus' for keeping the card. Pays the annual fee and I still get about $100 left over. Going for 4 years now. Try it.

      • +1

how much do you spend on the card per year?

also does any know know if you can switch between david jones and qantas points in the year(or after you get bonus points)?

        • +2

I hardly use it. I just keep it for the AMEX deals and the $100 or so worth in points that I get (after paying the annual fee) every year. why say no to free $100 a year for doing nothing other than 1 phone call?

        • @Hoobi: thanks, also is it the same with normal amex cards where its 1000 points = $7.41 as statement credit

        • @tess1988: Sorry don't know. I usually get Coles gift cards. Seems to have the best points conversion rate.

      • Is that 30,000 DJ or QFF points?

        • DJ points usually. You can transfer them to QFF points but in terms of maximising points value - i find the better option is to get coles gift cards.

  • +3

They had instant $500 vouchers for signing up once. I bought a suit then cancelled the card.

  • "If you are an existing Amex cardholder you will still be eligible for this offer as long as you do not have a David Jones Amex issued within 18 months. I know this was originally the case but I'm not sure this still applies anymore.

    • Can confirm it works as I got the points (only applied last week) see T&C:

"Customers applying for the David Jones American Express Staff Card or Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any other David Jones Credit Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer."

      • Ok, I reread the T&Cs and you look to be ok. What about making you inelligible for other Amex bonus offers?

        • Correct me if I am wrong but I believe they work both ways so you won't be ineligible for other amex bonus offers by applying this card

        • @holyplai: No, unfortunately, if you hold a DJ AMEX card, then it makes you ineligible for bonus points on other AMEX products. This has been confirmed by AMEX team via social media.

        • @The Champagne Mile:

Does that (ineligible for bonus points on other AMEX products) also apply if you held a DJ AMEX card and cancelled it within the last 18 months?

What if you currently hold an Explorer card, or held and cancelled an Explorer card, within the last 18 months and apply for the DJ AMEX, will you still be eligible for the sign up bonus points for the DJ AMEX?

        • @The Champagne Mile:
Sorry, just to clarify (because I'm not sure if this differs from other comments in the thread):

I have an AMEX issued AMEX. I applied online for this and they sent me a text yesterday saying it was approved. The service staff at DJs did say it would be a very easy approvals process because I already have a card. Are you saying I won't get the 50k bonus points? Or do you mean that after getting this DJs AMEX card, I won't get other AMEX bonus points, if I applied for further cards?

          Thank you :)

  • +1

Have one, great card. The reward points are good (~15k for $100 range last I checked) and 3pts/$ at supermarkets.
I also got them to waive the annual fee last time with a phone call.
Also, as above, DJs do price match, and have the odd Amex spend & save, which is a nice combo.

    • Got them to waive it on the first year? Or subsequent years?

      • +1

Just my first renew - second is in a few months, so TBC.

  • +3

Well put together post, great work OP

  • "Outside" just means using it 3 random places?

    • +3

yup, just make 3 x 1c transactions at Woolies and you are qualified for the bonus points.

      • thanks, most of these deals need like 70k wage, this one at 40k seems simple

        • I have a paper form of the application form with me; it says $25 000 for the DJs AMEX and $65 000 for the DJs Platinum AMEX.

        • +2

oh, I forget this, 1c transaction doesn't earn a point, so make 3 x $1 transaction to get 6 MR pts and to qualify for the bonus points.

  • how much $$ is 30K QFF points worth?
was thinking of signing up for one for 1 year and cancel it?

    • $300+

  • When is the annual fee charged? Can I get the points and then cancel the card?

    • +1

      At the start.

FYI. You can't cancel and recoup any of the annual fee pro rata. I've tried.

  • applied.!!! it said take 5-10 working days for the process..wtf!!

  • +1

Since Amex bonus points only get credited 1 time. I would save my application for one of the bigger deals out there and get at least 100k points.
You can only get the Amex bonus again after having your account closed for 18 months.

    • +1

nope, The David Jones AMEX is a completely separate product. You would get the bonus points

  • -6

of all the cards in the entire AM EX range this has to be the worst one.

The people who manage this will send you credit default alerts for the smallest of amounts ($5 yes that too was to just check the card).

Never go for David Jones Am EX speaking from first hand experience.

They plan the card around people defaulting payments not notifying them on time. Honestly this card should be banned.

    • Who doesn't make their payments in time? Not that hard really!

      • -1

$5 spent post activation on the card.
Am ex is not accepted most places without a surcharge so the card was just left aside.

28 degeees who ive used for last 7 years will send me email reminder and confirmation of payment received.

Automatic payments never missed just because of the benefits of 28 degeees card i guess.

These morons sent me a letter after missing payment saying credit authority will hold this information.

I am again warning everyone to stay away from them.

    • See above. I have so far made $400 profit from this card ($100 / year) for doing nothing not to mention making use of all the AMEX deals.

All credits cards cost heaps if you are not disciplined enough to make sure that you pay the balance in full.

  • If I take up this offer, will I be ineligible to apply for other non DJ Amex issued card bonuses. If so, can someone point out where in the in the T & C's this is stated?

  • This offer looks attractive, but I already have edge & explorer. I am wondering is it still possible for me to get this card?
Thought amex has 2 x cards limit per person (excluding charge card).

    Any help is appreciated!

    • Yes you can apply, i just called Amex to ask and they told me that is fine, it's a completely different product. I applied and waiting for the approval.

    • Nope. 2 credit cards per account.

  • -1
  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't see any exclusions for business use or for paying government fees or any caps. If so, this may well be the best rewards card on the market for businesses, no? You could accumulate a massive amount of points.

    • yep 1 reward point/dollar

  • oops, double posted, no idea how to delete

  • "Example: Explorer 100k + DJ Amex 50k + 2x 5k bonus for adding supplementary cardholder + refer 1 person to reach the 180k goal (or pool points with someone else)."

Aren't the Explorer points Gateway Rewards instead of Membership Rewards? Is it possible to combine them?

    • He meant that you transfer all the points to SPG, 180K MR to 90K SPG >> 270K Marriott points.

  • Can someone please explain to me how I would become a referral so I can get points for relatives that I can get to sign up?

    • Go into your AMEX acct on line and look along the top tabs. It will tell you up there about 'rewarding' your friends and family. There is a link which you send to your f&f which will have your first name in it. They use the link to apply and usually you see the points in yr acct before they even know they have been approved.

  • I read somewhere a guy applied for 3 Amex cards (Explorer, Velocity and Qantas), all got approved and received bonus but mind you this was before Amex started cracking down on this. He also said Amex only did one credit check as he can see only 1 credit inquiry on his credit report. My question is, can someone who had applied for multiple Amex cards, please check their credit report on creditsavvy.com.au and confirm whether Amex only check your credit once?

  • If I own an Explorer card can I get my wife to sign for this card and still get the referral points? Not sure if the referrals are tied to a specific card and my wife's salary is not high enough for the Explorer

    • yes everyone is entitled to get a david jones card it doesn't count towards the amex 2 card rule, and household income is fine too. if you have a amex card just quote it on the application to get ID and approved faster.

      • -3

I think this is incorrect, applied for this card last Friday and I have been asked to close one of the 2 AMEX cards to proceed with this as max 2 credit cards and 1 charge card is allowed.

        • +1

the coolsteps's comment above is correct. I called Amex to confirm the information and they told me that DJ Amex is a completely different product, the Amex 2 card rule doesn't apply and they told me to go ahead to apply for the DJ card. I applied and got the approval today. I am currently holding 1 Explorer and 1 Plat Edge.

        • @T-man: I can confirm this is correct I have also called to confirm

  • Does anyone convert their cba credit card points to qantas. Is it worth it? I remebered in one transferred only 50,000 points was transferred to qantas from the 80,000 points I had. Is there any other better options?

  • This AMEX referral scheme is a bit confusing. If I have an Explorer card can I refer somebody to get this one?

Also, if I refer somebody and I use his code will this work? Will we both get the bonuses?

    • you can refer anyone as long as you have the same card program type. you cant refer to david jones. you can be existing amex card holder and still qualify for the dj sign up bonus as its a different product and dept

      • Great, thanks.

  • Has anyone had any success in getting the first year fee waived in any cards?

  • For those who already have the DJ card, can potentially apply for the DJ Platinum card as the fine print seems to exclude only existing DJ Platinum holders (not the standard one).

  • How long are people finding the points take tompost to your Amex account? Made the 3 purchases last week on the card but still no points. Previously with Amex cards I've received the bonus points within a day or 2 of hitting the required spend.

Edit: points just came through lol.

    • Quick, spend the points before they charge you the $99 and close the account? Does that work?

  • +1

When does the Referrer get his reward points - on card approval or is it after the Referee has made the 3 eligible spends?

    • +1

      After card approval.

  • None of the referral links are working for me, any ideas? I wanna give someone 20k!!

  • Gonna sign up to Platinum today. Anyone wanna incentivise me to click their referral Lmk

  • Anyone know when does Amex automatically convert the MR points to QFF points?

  • So am I better off with the Amex Points or the Qantas points? I think I have read elsewhere that Amex points are superior, but DJ Amex points are different. What's the deal?

  • Not sure where to ask this question, but I'll try asking it here.

I've just received my DJs Amex card and want to add it to my existing Amex online account. I can't do it online and the call centre says I can't have a DJs Amex on the same account as another Amex. Is this what other people have found? It's gonna be slightly annoying to not have them on the same login, especially on smartphone app :(

    • Yes you have to go into david jones website, also I don't think you can use the Amex mobile app for the david jones card… if you have a apple device with Apple Pay as far as I know you should be seeing your transactions from card, iPhone , Apple Watch in the wallet / settings app

  • You can use the Amex app for your DJs card. I know this because I use it for my DJs card. And yes you have to create a separate login for your DJs card
