  • Is it still working if fitbit turn off the server ?

    • +1

Fitbit said they'd keep the servers going for the near future due to their own generosity but after that it's basically a paperweight. There are some users trying to fix up an unofficial firmware that they'll make standalone but how that's going I have no idea. Go check out the Pebble subreddit and have a dig around.

    • +11

A couple of days ago they updated the Android app to ensure it continues to work if/when the servers go down:

We’ve updated our Android app to preserve the Pebble smartwatch experience and remove the dependence on cloud services.
The app lets Pebble devices keep working, even if online servers are not accessible for any reason. The login process can be skipped, apps can be side-loaded, and the latest watch firmware (including language packs) can be installed.

I'd assume the same applies to the iOS app but can't confirm.

      • This is a pretty awesome response. I wish all vendors did this when abandoning old products.

      • Goddamn. It's things like this that makes me wish FitBit just bought Pebble and let them do their own thing rather than dismantling the whole operation.

    • People are still hopeful for the Pebble 2 to come out on Change. I loved my Pebble time, and based of @Roseyhead 's post, I won't mind getting one

      • +1

I never got my Time 2 refund from Kickstarter, so I'd need to be pretty confident that I'd actually get something before putting money anywhere near anything.

That being said, still wearing my pebble time.

        • Wearing my pebble time as well! (I was going to say "too" but it sounded too much like Pebble time 2 weeps)

I got mine a couple of months after the production was cancelled. You should chase that up, man

        • +2

@kmish: Chase it up with who? Kickstarter support take 0 responsibility and pebble/fitbit dgaf

        • +1

@Domingo: umm I was just reading though their last update. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/getpebble/pebble-2-time…

It looks like the refunds were being handled by KS themselves. I'm sure you've already tried, but it says
Visit kickstarter.com/contact with any additional questions.

I can see in the comments there's heaps of backers that still haven't gotten their refund, but that's where I'd be chasing it up

        • +1

I got my refund within 72 hours of the PT2 Kickstarter being abandoned. Contact Kickstarter because there's no reason you shouldn't have gotten it.

        • @kmish: Kickstarter's boilerplate response is:

          Hi there,

All eligible refunds have been processed, as outlined in the Pebble team's latest update.

Since you wrote, we have reached out several times to the Pebble team to share backer feedback and encourage them to respond to the concerns raised by you and your fellow backers regarding their refund policy. It sounds like they are planning to address backer concerns, so we hope they will send a public update soon. Thank you for your patience and understanding in the meantime.

          Best,
          Katherine

          I think I've received that 3 times now :(

  • It will work, they are just not releasing anymore updates for the phone.

  • Sorry a little bit off topic, but does anyone know of any deals for Pebble Time Round at the minute?

  • +5

Pebble app no longer requires cloud services to work. Here's the update from the devs.

Today’s updates to the Pebble apps for iOS and Android liberate them from past dependency on cloud services. Freeing the ecosystem from these dependencies means Pebble smartwatches can operate normally, even if online servers are not accessible for any reason.

so you don't have to fear the pebble watches becoming non-functional once the cloud servers get turned off. However, it might mean you lose access to the Pebble app store… which still houses some useful 3rd party apps and watch faces.

Those of you who can read Chinese, should probably buy the Amazfit instead. It has better features, like GPS connectivity, touch based menus and a 45 day battery life with it's reflective display.
There is also a round amazfit, for those that don't like square shaped watches.

    • it looks like they do an english version of it too, but you'll prolly hit some hardcoded chinese in settings (i presume, like the old Xiaomi phones)

      http://www.geekbuying.com/item/English-Version-Huami-Amazfit…

      • Wonder if these Huami products can be used with other apps. It would suck if I can only use the MIFIT app and not share to Strava

        • +1

I own an amazfit. They only work with their apps.

They're amazing for battery life, but woeful for screen quality.

I use mine mainly as a heart beat tracker in the gym, and my gym MP3 player :)

        • @MasterScythe: can you manage spotify through it? Does the heart rate tracker sync with Google fit?

        • @kmish: No idea.
I know what heart rate I'm targeting, so I don't rely on apps to do it.

It tells me, I know what I want, I aim for it.

I don't use streaming services, I just put 2GB of MP3 onto the watch and bluetooth direct from it, to my earphones.

EDIT: actually, I don't see how spotify, or GoogleFit could work, unless you took your phone with you too….

        • +1

It does work with one other app and that is Strava, so you're in luck. It links via the app but you can sync your sessions ata a ltare date so you don't need it connected to your phone at the time.
On a side note, i had the Pebble time steel and now have the English version of the Amazfit and i must say it is a very impressive watch that is IMO better than the time steel. The only things not as good are the battery life (I get about 5 days non GPS usage) and i used to like using the mic for SMS responses.

        • @halfnhalf71: 5 days?! it boasts of 45 days of standby battery!
          Is sleep tracking included?

        • @MasterScythe: whoop, with spotify i meant being able to control it if your phone is plugged into a speaker… like the pebble does.

The MP3 2gb option is pretty solid too though

        • +1

          @kmish:
I think you'll be hard pressed to find anyone who turns their watch to standby when they're not using it.

Mine stays on 24/7; which is where I expect hes getting 5 days. I get more like 7, but yes, it's good.

        • +1

@kmish: That is probably with lowest brightness, no bluetooth or wifi, no GPS, altimeter or compass. I have mine constantly connected to my phone and get all my phone notifictations, my watch face also has a few things like weather but i do have it so there are no notifications between 11pm and 7am but it does track sleep. All that lasts about 5 days.

    • I am really happy with my Xiaomi Amazfit Round Smartwatch

  • Incredible watches, too bad they're almost a paperweight.

    • +1

      Read the comments above

      • Ahh posted while I was writing mine of course. Sounds amazing though.

  • My OG Pebble Steel has pretty much carked it. I've been looking high & low for what I replace it with - I've just found the answer. Thanks OP

    • In exactly the same boat, grabbed one as soon as I could!

      • I love my pebble… mine got so overworked that the pin holding the strap on kept unscrewing itself and is currently sitting somewhere in the Splendour in the Grass parklands. The idea of having a brand new colour screen equipped version on my wrist has made my week!

        • Glad to see people still using the Steel! Mine's just about done, top 2 buttons are gone, still has 5 day battery however!

Can't wait to get this in!

        • @overhauled: OG Steel was the best. This one won't be that great of a replacement IMO.

        • @theguyrules: Indeed is the best, probably won't be, but really need a replacement, would like to use all the buttons on my watch!

        • +1

@overhauled: Sorry didn't mean to be a downer. Hopefully it's awesome!

        • $7 (+ shipping?) for replacement screw pins: https://www.clockworksynergy.com/shop/accessories/watch-pins…

        • that happened to mine too. I solved the problem by putting a drop of superglue on top of that screw.

  • +6

Those people taking a punt on this deal may want to check out the firmware replacement: https://rebble.io/

    • Oh, neat, has it finally had an official launch now?

Last time I looked it was more like a blank runtime.

  • +1

Still rocking my OG Pebble as a daily driver. I actually bought a Pebble Time when they came out and sold it off as the screen was more washed out than my high contrast black and white OG. I've just bought one of these though as a back up. Will be good to have a play with it again.

  • It says not possible to ship to Australia. Am I doing something wrong?

    • Probably sold out from Amazon as the seller

      • Unlucky; I ordered mine and the seller was Firemall LLC, it seems they have now sold out and the remaining stockists don't ship to Australia.
        Deal expired

        • Looks like it can still be purchased from Firemall LLC

        • +1

          @Underlord:
Indeed. Recommend OP update link to only show this version: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0106IS5XY?m=A9VBWN1Q1U6E6&ref_=v_…

        • @Hinee: Thanks all. managed to score one.

        • @djshitu: Managed to get a couple while they are still available. I am still using my Steel ( although screen tearing issue starting to surface) and was lucky enough to receive a Pebble 2 off KS before it all went pear shaped.

        • +1

          @Juddda:
Judda, I fixed my steel by taking the back off and sticking a small piece of credit card style plastic in there. Check out the third post here and give it a go.

        • @Hinee: Thanks Hinee, I will give it a try.

  • What's left is $50 USD tho

  • If you use your watch for notifications, pedo, time. Then this is still a good watch. I don't really use any of the apps anymore. I use mine mainly for notifications and pedo.

  • If you want something along these lines have a look at Ticwatch

    • Have you seen the Kickstarter for the new ticwqtch? I'm trying to convince myself to get it but I just don't like the bands

      • I bought the E because it looks like a standard band connection you can replace if it breaks. Never had a smart watch. That looks cheap enough to try.

        • Yeah the e does look better style wise but the same looks better build quality

    • The battery life is absolute piss. Most of the time you gotta charge every night even if it's basic use (notifcations, alarm etc). It's good in other features but shit battery life.

  • I've got the original pebble - screen tearing though.

Great price on the Time but I'm still hesitant. If it were the Steel version I'd grab it regardless of future prospects and dev support, but not sure the risk is worth it for these chunky looks.

    Someone convince me! Heh.

    • I have Time Steel. I say… nah, it's not worth it, I would buy the Pebble Time for as cheap as possible as this product has essentially no more development and no warranty either.

the Time Steel does have a nicer strap (mine is leather strap, with charcoal finish), and slightly longer battery life, but has no other improved functionality

    • Pretty easy to fix the screen tearing, but does compromise the water proofing.

      • +1

I fixed my pebble OG screen tearing the usual way but regreased the seal with doustgrease (one of those food grade plumbers lubricants you can get from Bunnings) and while I wasn't expecting it to work, after jumping in the pool and swimming a few laps I got out and it was fine.

    • If you are concerned about the chunky looks (which I agree with) check out the pebble 2. You can get the Standard Edition (SE) for 82 delivered or the HR for an extra 35 bucks or so

  • Does anyone know if you can sync your Pebble steps with the fitbit app directly?

    • couldn't when I was using one, only Jawbone Up and even that I couldn't really get working properly

  • +1

Grabbed it $74aud including shipping :-) thank you OP

Anyone had experience setting this up with navigation? Either a map or just the text directions?

  • +1

I still love my original Pebble, as I've stated many-a-time, so how could I pass up a Time at this price point? I could not!

This little bit of reporting is also heartening for anyone wondering about how they'll get apps onto the little beast if the turn off the cloud servers and store. It's a little clearer than some of the other updates out there:

    https://www.engadget.com/2017/04/05/your-pebble-watch-will-s…

These were USD$199 on original release.

  • does it post to Australia?

    • Sold out. When that happens, it goes to third party sellers which don't send overseas.

  • -1

    Wow was $16 in March!

  • I've had two Pebble Originals suffer screen smearing but are otherwise going strong.. anyone knows what would happen if this one has the same issue? Warranty?

  • I can't see 'Kevin' anywhere on the dial.

  • I've recently dug out my original KickStarter Pebble after drowning my Pebble Time. Yes, it was waterproof but it's not suggested to wear it into the steam room between swims. It's now very damp on the inside. I was taken by the colour screen on the Pebble Time when I got it and had forgotten how much more contrast there is on the original Pebble.
I've since sourced a Pebble 2, and hope to have that some time soon.

  • I've had 2 OG Pebbles. Each suffered screen tearing and the fix didn't fix it long term for me. I did manage to find a Time very recently on FB marketplace for only $36 albeit it did have some minor scratching on it. But then not long after that I found a practically brand new Time Steel for only $58 also on FB marketplace. Perfect for me, now I can swap between each depending on whether I'm on the tools or not.

At this price point I have zero concerns about lack of support, since in a couple of years these watches will probably be a throw away anyway. The Pebble ecosystem is perfect for what I want in a watch so I'm going to enjoy it while I can.

  • +1

It's a good price, however I actually think compared to the Pebble 2 which you can have for a few bucks more, you lose the relatively gimmicky colour screen but you gain a more visible screen in a sleeker package, and also it has a mic which can be used for responding to messages, which I find actually quite useful. Pebble 2 is going for $5 USD more at the moment if you don't need HRM, which I heard was a bit dodgy anyway.

Edit: ok just noticed that the time has the mic also, so it's just the screen and design which I think is better on the Pebble 2 SE.

    • Cheers for mentioning this. My original Pebble has the screen tearing issue (seems like everyone has it!) and so I was looking at getting the Time to replace it. But when you mentioned the Pebble 2, I did some quick googling and looks like it is the smarter choice for me (longer battery life mainly!). So I ended up grabbing a Pebble 2, worked out to about $10 extra.

      • Can you link to the one you got? I am getting one but will probably take the plunge tonight.

On a side note I used the original pebble for at least 18 months, and it was great until the screen tearing issue reared its head for the 3rs time and while fixing it I shears the part of the back panel where the screws went in (as it needed more and more pressure to stay working well, which should make sense to you if you understand the tearing issue fix). I could still fix it but it's a bit of work and not guaranteed a good result.

Anyway I have since switched back to my LG G watch, and while its a pain to charge daily, the real issues are functional screwups. The watch often disconnects from my phone due to battery saver turning off BT, and when it does the watch might tell you the time is anything but the actual time. Also when you reconnect it, it could be any amount of time before the time is correct, with no way to manually set it. When this happens you also lose message notifications. The vibration is weak also, and between these issues that means missed meeting and phone calls. Of course I may be part of the issues, this is all just my experience.

In contrast, the pebble was great, never had any of the the above issues, everything worked perfectly (bar jawbone up which I couldn't really get working perfectly, was always different number of steps on the phone app for some reason. For the price, it's a no brainier IMO.

        • On that note, just bought one for $82.xx AUD delivered using Amazon conversion. Was considering the HR but heard they weren't accurate at all and didn't want to punt 30 extra bucks

        • @Jackson: hey mate, which Amazon seller did you choose to get that pricing?

Don't worry - I purchased one from the link below. Now, I've ordered the Pebble Time and the Pebble 2 SE this week - couldn't resist. Love my original Pebble - consider it buying a piece of smartwatch heritage!

        • @fookos: we bought the same one, it was just cheaper when I bought it, not sure why

        • @Jackson: I ended up ordering a Pebble 2 also, thanks for the heads up.

  • why is this categorized under "Women's Smartwatches" - is there a different version for men?

    • +2

This was answered in the Q&A on the actual Amazon page:

Question: Why is this listed as a women watch? Girly?
Answer: It is actually listed in three categories: Smart Watches, Women's Watches, and Men's Watches. It is currently ranked highly in the Women's Watches category compared to the other women's watches, even more so than in the Smart Watches or Men's Watches categories. Therefore, Amazon's algorithm presents it in the category it is performing best. So really, it IS a women's watch, but it is also a men's watch and a smart watch. see less
