Samsung Galaxy Ace 3 4G GT-S7275Y $20 at Coles

160

Just picked up 4 of these for $20 each at Coles Rouse Hill. They are locked to Telstra. Suspect this is nation wide. Not the world's best phone but a brand name 4G smartphone for $20 is a bargain nonetheless.

Note that the phones I got all came with credit that expired 5 August 2017. I have been able to activate one of mine manually anyway but I can't guarantee it will work for others.

I've had a bit of a play with it now. Reviews I found online are pretty accurate. Nice screen though small. (I don't haven issue with supposed pixelation mentioned but I haven't tried games). A bit lagy. Bargain for $20 as a spare or throw around phone.

Previous OzB deals in 2014/2015 had it selling for between $49 and $249. Sale sticker which said save $109 so regular price at Coles appears to be $129.

How many were left after you bought 4?

    • None..

      • Actually 2 that I saw for sure.

  • +1

Why you need 4 lol ….

    • +2

      4 in the family.

Just picked up 4 of these

    Hi Broden.

  • I think this phone really is only worth $20. From what I've read poor screen, very laggy, etc.

Much more value going with Motorola…

  • Can you confirm it works ok. My last two cheap phones can't stay alive.

    • Did they have Saturday Night Fever?

      • You should be dancing…

        • -1

          You're just Jive Talkin'.

  • +2

Broadcom dual core 1.2ghz with a single gigabyte of RAM. You kind of get what you pay for, but $20 is actually fairly decent value for a burner phone, or something you could use as dedicated music player.

As long as your apps don't force close or crash… the CPU is very low performance and reviews say Google Maps crashes often so maybe not so great as a GPS unit.

    • So frustration central then?

  • ha, i just checked galaxy ace 4 spec and its actually reduced, it has 512mb vs 1gb for the ace 3, seriously Samsung get your shite together.

  • +5

I am getting grief over buying 4 of these? Seriously? You're seriously discouraging people from posting deals?

I didn't have the opportunity to grab a pic of the sticker which btw said save $109. (I certainly wouldn't buy 4 of these at $129!) So I could either post my receipt or not post the deal. I still would have bought 4 either way and there's nothing low or illegal about grabbing a bargain for myself and my family. If you'd rather I didn't post the deal let me know so I can learn my lesson for next time.

    Sheesh!

    • +1

If you're going to post a deal, you should first accept that you might not get feedback that's of the same opinion as you. I personally don't think this is a deal given the crappy specs, not sure what I could use it for other than a backup for calls and sms only, which I already have older phones for, so the $20 spent would just be a waste of money for me. If google maps keeps crashing, then it can't be used as a GPS, and may also be a crappy option for a dedicated music player too. Each to their own, don't let opposing feedback deter you from posting deals though.

      • +7

Well I think some people just like to complain no matter what.

With your attitude don't be too surprised when the deals dry up. If this deal isn't for you, just move on. Criticizing everyone who posts a deal unless you specifically like it will lead to no one posting deals because most deals are not for most people.

There are firmware updates for this phone. One already waiting to be downloaded when I loaded it up. I have no idea if they will address stability issues mentioned in a particular review.

Personally I don't think you have any imagination. If I'm going to give a child a phone for example I don't want it to be an expensive one. $20 is just about perfect. Also you get a charger (Only 1 amp), usb cable, earbuds. They'd have to be worth a few dollars.

I'm not trying to convince you to buy the phone though. Do what you want. But taking a dump on someone for posting a deal is just self-defeating and lame.

Oh and btw if the below were considered deals, I think it's fair to post this one. It's an old phone now, but I didn't spot it for $249 or even $49…it was $20.

Thanks for the post, and yes you can buy as many as you like!

        • +1

Sorry, to be clear, I haven't criticized you or your deal, or negged your deal for that matter, so no need to get your knickers in a knot. I dont know who you're referring to as having taken a dump on you for posting the deal (however if something is not a deal, then the dumping should/can be expected). I have clearly stated its not for me given my circumstances. And I have two kids, and I can guarantee you that once they see not many apps or games run on it, or keep crashing, will treat it as a paperweight or a frisbee (that's not my imagination btw, that's experience talking). The charger and other lower quality stuff that comes with it dont justify the cost either, as most people will probably already have better chargers and ear/headphones from other phones they've bought or items they've bought separately.

Like I said earlier, each to their own, don't let opposing feedback deter you from posting deals. Like wftnodeal said below, stop caring so much about the comments. Just post your deal and move on.

        Excellent positive final sentence -
"Each to their own, don't let opposing feedback deter you from posting deals though."

Your post is much appreciated by many and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Not everyone is going to agree on what is deemed to be a "bargain" since so many factors come into play. I mean if I was a vegetarian a $5 rib eye steak would be a stellar deal to some, but useless to me.

Anyways, I digress. I just wanted to give you the heads up that I called Telstra and currently they're going to charge $25 to unlock, but starting October 13th it will be free to do so. I assume you'll be in a similar boat.

For me, that makes this an even better deal! So thank you again.

      • That's interesting. Did the Telstra staff member say all unlocking would be free starting Oct 13 for all devices or just these? At the risk of copping further flak over my phone purchases I have a Buzz 4GX, a Lumia 535 and a Wifi dongle I wouldn't mind unlocking.

        • I think there is a certain fixed amount of time since the SIM was issued…say two years (just a guess)

        • +1

          @King Tightarse:

Thanks. I'm pretty sure it's suppose to be 2 years of them being in service. But who knows how the hell Telstra applies their rules.

        • @syousef: To clarify, I was just talking about these and it's not because of their model, rather it's due to their age. According to their website,

"There is a fee to have your Pre-Paid mobile phone unlocked.

          • $80 for devices activated for 6 months or less, or never activated; and

          • $25 for devices activated for more than 6 months up to 2 years."

The way it's worded iniitially made me think the SIM card that came with it has to be activated or something like that. However, that's not been my experience. I've bought a couple of other brand new "old stock" devices which I've never used the SIM for or done anything to activate them and had them unlocked for free by Telstra.

I would take a guess the two year clock starts ticking the second Telstra ships them out to suppliers, not when the consumer buys them.

The older your other devices are the better the chance of having it unlocked for free. No harm in calling up Telstra and asking. You just need the IMEI's and models for the devices.

        • @thefinalproblems:

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I'll give it a go.

        • @syousef: Let us know how it goes and good luck!

        • @thefinalproblems:

I just tried it with a Telstra Buzz 4GX and Lumia 535. I'll have to wait another 3-4 months which is not too bad. Not sure if Telstra will have an issue with me trying to unlock half a dozen devices within a short period. For those that think I'm some kind of monster for buying 4 phones in one hit, I'm not selling these. Just for use by immediate family. The worst you can accuse me of is hoarding.

        • +1

          @syousef: Decent result! :)

Lol as for buying 4, if there is no limit on how many you can purchase, fair game to you! You aren't the first and won't be the last to purchase multiples of something that's on sale… don't let the banter and minor trolling discourage you!

        • @thefinalproblems:

          Thanks mate.

  • -1

Is it locked to Telstra ?

    • Yep. Stated that right in the first paragraph. Was warned by the lady who served me at Coles.

  • For the price, I would get one for backup, since I don't have a spare phone at the moment.

  • Damn.. No Coles near me now. Else try to pick up a couple for kid's phones. Oh well.

  • I'd be curious to know if I was right and there are other stores that have this in quantity. Otherwise it should be withdrawn as a deal.

  • There is a LineageOS 14.1 (Android 7.1.1) ROM available the Galaxy Ace 3 (R B T) for this if that is your thing. I'm assuming it works for Y, at your own risk.

  • How much memory - 4GB I'm assuming?

    • Total Device capacity: 8.00GB
      System Memory: 2.70GB

Keep in mind it's an Android 4.2.2 device. There are unofficial 5 firmwares. So if you're looking for something that will run all the latest and greatest apps this may not be your best bet.

  • Cheaper than buying a spare charger outright. Thanks OP

    • Glad you found the deal useful even if there are cheaper chargers. I think for what you get in the box overall $20 isn't a lot to pay. As long as you're not expecting it to rival a flagship phone you should be happy.

And anyway it's a cheap official Samsung charger whereas the others mentioned aren't.

Got the last one at my local store. Thanks OP!

You're welcome. Glad this has helped a couple of people after all.

  • I own a mobile phone with the same processor and operating system, Huawei G526. The web browsing experience isn't buttery smooth for popular websites that have ads (eg. OzBargain.com.au). A tip for improving the speed of your web browsing experience is to install a faster web browser.

Google search for "Snapdragon Optimized web browsers" and you'll get a list of Chrome spin off projects.
    http://beebom.com/best-snapdragon-optimized-browsers/

I've installed "YuBrowser" (Ver 54) from Googles Play Store and it works fine with this processor.

  • Thanks OP! Got a few in the Brisbane area. Also Optus 4G Plus Car Wifi USB Modem (Huawei E8372h) were on sale for $9. At up to 150mps download speeds, it's a pretty good deal, especially when they were trying to sell 3G Vodafone ones for $10!

    • Also Optus 4G Plus Car Wifi USB Modem (Huawei E8372h) were on sale for $9

Oh please tell me this is nationwide…
Do you know what its normal price is? Included data?

Also for $20 its a touchscreen Samsung 4G phone with a charger. Expecting any more is ridiculous.

      • Where I went they were displayed with the phones and I was told by staff they were both on clearance, so I would assume nationwide.

I'm not sure what their normal price is, but Optus themselves still sell it for $69 http://www.optus.com.au/shop/prepaid/mobile-broadband/wifi/e…. The ones I bought had Sims that were long expired and couldn't be activated, so no included data unless you're able to find one that's newer, in which case 4GB is included. Rumours on forums suggest that it might even come unlocked, still to verify.

        • Oh that's absolutely awesome!! I couldn't be bothered to check today, but hopefully they are still thst price and in stock when I go Monday!

Would be amazing also if I got one with 4gb data (30 days expiry I'm guessing) that hasn't expired yet but great if it was unlocked also.

          Thanks!

        • @pennypincher98: Just finished checking with a Vodafone sim and it worked no problem. It also worked with an Amaysim one as well, which is not a surprise considering they use Optus' network.

Honestly, even without the data, it's a great deal unlocked. For some reason, people seem to think these need to be plugged into a computer, but as long as it's connected to a power source it works. Great for travelling!

          Good luck with your search!

        • @thefinalproblems: hey that is awesome news!!! Yeah its a great deal even without the data, but that would just be the cherry on top :)

I would use this plugged into my computer though, even though I know it can be connected to any power source.

Thanks for that and yes it is absolutely amazing for train travel!

  • +1

    cheers OP

  • Woah, finally walked in to a Coles and found one.
I mostly wanted it for the NFC so hopefully it does have that. Now, to unlock it…

  • Did anyone manage to update the Android on these?
Optus and Voda versions are on Android 5.0 (Lollipop), these are on 4.2 (jelly bean)
