  • Anyone shopped with them in the past? Experience?

    Thanks

I bought few phones in the past. Shipping is really fast.

    • +1

      Very bad.

They don't update info, no communication, no replies, nothing zip nada nil kaput. I'm just a ghost customer to them. Ebay purchase btw.

It's up to you if you want to risk it, as I can see others bought stuff with no issues, must be the lucky ones. But for me, will avoid them.

    • +1

Bought from them maybe a couple of years ago - seemed fine at the time. Agree the US version works fine here - just need to get an adapter for the power plug. Note that it's a fairly large wall wart, so with the adapter it can stick out a bit.

    • +2

Dad bought phone with them before and it was defective (battery), sending it back took some time. Getting the phone took 1.5months from overseas originally from the order. but we got it finally back to use 2.5months after everything. sold it a week later as IP7 had came out.

      • +3

        nice story… thanks.

  • +9

Please note it is the US edition - Just don't mention "aluminium" "colour" or "gun control" to it and you'll be fine.

    • Yeah and the note on the site says that it may not support local radio channels.

      • LOL what a stupid note, there's no FM in it. And you can change to Australian English anyways

      • The Home can play live streamed radio stations. The note refers to that feature.

Does it mean if you say "Play Triple J" which is an oz radio station, the US edition may not recognise it?

        • I have one and it streams local radio from iheart and others

    • +3

So it comes with the NSA backdoor for free?

  • +1

    OP how did you $137.75? For me it shows $125 + $21.90(delivery) - 5% discount = $140.25

    • change the delivery to uninsured

      • -7

And what happens if it gets lost in the post, you're stuffed then, just to save a few dollars. Are you willing to risk that over some thing which retails in Australia for $200?.

        • +5

          Paypal is your friend

        • +15

@hollykryten: Should've tried to launder money through the CBA instead :P

        • @hollykryten:

Paypal banned me for having multiple accounts.

I have multiple accounts and it's pretty much impossible to get one of them closed as I don't have the password and the phone number on the account isn't mine.

    • make sure you pay with Paypal, in case any problem

  • Anyone recommend a US to AU power adapter?

  • Are these micro USB powered like Echo dots?

    • Sadly no, proprietary plug on the bottom of the device

  • I'd rather wait for Amazon to launch here. Echo's are cheaper and supports more devices.

    • -1

Lol the echo is 179.99USD on Amazon…

      • Echo Dot is US$50

      • 2 echo dot for 1 google home?

        • Don't know why you would be comparing the echo dot to a google home when they arent even in the same tier. Echo dot is their budget tier. You should be comparing with a echo tap at least with the google home.

        • +1

@tomochin1991: depends on how you're using it. I hook my echo dot to my speakers, Same functions. Unfortunately Google home does not have a lower end speaker product. Anyway, the point i'm making is that there are more supported devices on Amazon then Google and Apple combined. Amazon has pretty much captured the market in the states and UK by flooding their 'Budget' echos. Amazon is launching in Australia soon, very soon. This looks like a last minute ditch by Google to capture some of the Australian market.

'Hey Google, how do I install a 24/7 active spying device in my house?'

    • +12

Unless you disabled it, it's already installed on your phone.

    • +3

why do you need a 24/7 active spying device in your house ??

      • +11

        whoosh

    • Ting!! "Google is already spying on you 24/7. If you need access to the information we collect, please pay $$$"

      • It not spying you actively engage and give Google info Gmail details etc …..

    • It should be 'ok Google'.

  • seller is good

  • Great deal,OK Google, I am very tempted…

I hope you realise the privacy issues with anything google. I guarantee this thing will be collecting data on everything that passes through - just as the android os and google search engine does.

Just did a quick search (using duck duck go), although it's all kind of obvious https://duckduckgo.com/?q=google+home+privacy+issues&t=ffab&…

    • +1

I hope you realize the privacy issues with anything online. I guarantee that everything will be collecting data on anything that passes through the digital world - just as the internet, phone, credit cards, tax returns and census.

      • +3

        Including this conversation ;)

    • +1

We can all take measures to choose what we share or do online, eg duckduckgo or google? Real identities and information on facebook or misinformation (the people who know you already know you). But things like this device, I guarantee, sooner or later or already, won't give you that choice. It's a listening device.

But you guys seem switched on :)

      • Hmmmmm… if i remember correctly, the government already has access to listen in on you if you have a smart tv… Maybe need to go back to using CRT.

        • +1

No, just don't connect it to the internet. I suppose I was just giving a heads up to people who may not be aware, although it's hard not to be.

    • Who do you trust more - Google or the government? Google will use your data to try and make money. Who knows how a future government might want to use it?

  • Can anyone tell me what I can do with Google Home, except asking a question, playing music or turning off lights?

    • Use it with IFTTT (for example) to do a plethora of things. Only really limited by your imagination and how much effort & expense you want to invest. Lights & music is the tip of the iceberg. Some people will get a LOT out of these things, other wont so much.

      • Thanks.

Will pass it since it doesn't really make my life easier.

        • It doesn't make my life easier, but it is pretty nifty. This might sound a bit like a first world problem, but being able to say "play this song" or "play this artist" is so much easier than loading up a music app on your phone and casting it to a speaker.

I use mine for getting the latest ABC NewsRadio broadcast on demand. Depending on the podcast you listen to it can also play that without any intervention.

It also is a speaker with built-in Chromecast Audio and Bluetooth, so you can cast from any apps on your phone.

We didn't have a speaker, so were looking to get one. We also wanted a Chromecast Audio (or similar) so it was the natural choice.

        • @pernunz:

          how is the sound quality?

        • @pernunz: Can you connect it to any bluetooth speaker ? Would love to say "play this song with Spotify" and it will play it on my bluetooth speaker.

        • @sfac: I'm the wrong person to ask. I know nothing about sound quality. It sounds good, gets reasonably loud for how small it is. That's all the insight I can give

        • @Jayjay93:
I don't know if you can connect the Google Home to output audio to another source

    • If you have Chromecast, you can also ask google to play a video from Netflix, Youtube etc. Here's a comprehensive list of what you can do with it: http://www.androidauthority.com/android-7-0-update-679175/

  • Amazon Echo got a two year lead, Google Home is catching up.

    • I'm sure they're made in China

  • Is it basically the same thing as Google Voice except you don't need to use your phone?

  • This thing is going to make the news, and for all the wrong reasons.
