but i think can achieve the same features as AU version.

    you think it can…

    I should buy one then.

    • YMMV

    • Why?

  • Check the remarks:
We do not guarantee the function of connected home operating properly in countries other than U.S.

I can tell you from my own experience the US units are identical (apart from the plug) and work perfectly here

      • +1

I have found the same with my US version. Works perfectly

"hey google, pretend you have Australian firmware"

I laughed more than I should have at this comment.

"Can you repeat that? I don't understand your bogan accent".

  • They work just fine. I've been using one for months.

Just a note this company charges you 3.5% to use PayPal which from memory is against their T&C's

    • report them…

      • +2

        Already have.

    • Actually, its not against Paypal T&C's, if the vendor charges similar fees when using other payment options. I had to verify this for an AU Paypal account for work. Charging for Paypal US based accounts is definitely against the T&C's though.

Although this may changed with the latest round of Paypal T&C changes at the start of August this year.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

        "Although this may have changed"

      • I don't believe they charge for credit card but I'm not sure.

I've read in the T&C's that you cannot charge customers more than paypal charge you in some cases.

It's all too convoluted for me, I need someone smarter than me.

Or PayPal to get their shit together and not give me two different answers in two separate occasions.

      • After hearing back from paypal they are investigating.

They said the 3.5% is more than they are being charged. So it might get cheaper for everyone.

  • 3.5% is like $4.9? if you want the security, just pay that $4.9. otherwise, you can always use bank deposit.

    • Completely missed the point.

      But what ever.

  • Other than the American voice, is there anything at all that limits the American version here in Australia (compared to the Aus version)?

    • When you set it up you choose your country so the unit works identically to one bought here or anywhere else in the world for that matter

  • It's better to be safe and get them from jb the good guys or office works for 134.80
Iv done it befor and posted the recipes look up other thred on these

    • depending on price difference, just getting the au power pack and not needing a travel adapter is already worth a few bucks ….. and if you want to ebay or gumtree it because it hasn't enriched your life easier to sell au version than a us version..

if jb or office works had them $140 i'd consider getting one as an impulse buy but to import one seems over kill when it does less then your android phone can do .

i can see google wanting to tap into non android user market eg apple users and also families eg kids don't have a phone but can now ok google and when they get a phone its android ……. data collection is the new currency …… we have seen how much the states get for selling off land titles offices and the people buying know the value of data and on selling analytics …..

google should almost be giving these things away

    • How can you get JB, Good Guys or Officeworks to price match against stock located in Hong Kong which means a grey import. That's a whole another country. There's no way an Australian retailer will price match against a USA model which isn't even located in Australia to begin with.

      • -1

I walk in to these places ask if they will match a stor selling for $142 and I always get a yes we can but at office works they matched $142 and beat by 5% as well I also had the good guys sell me 2 at $134.80 no price match just said that's lowest the can go

  • Does it work with LG OLED tvs?

    • I think this just uses a Chromecast to connect to a TV. So if the TV has a HDMI port i'm sure it will work if you have a Chromecast. The TV will just upscale the 1080p signal.

      • I've only just got my LG OLED and yesterday I was on you tube on my phone and it asked if I wanted to watch it on another device. Two presses of a button and it was on the TV. No chromecast plugged in either.

        • Yes because your TV has built in casting which is compatible with your phone. My LG blu-ray player has the same feature built in too.

        • @hollykryten: Does that make it instantly compatible with the Google Home? I can't find anything online. It would be the first useful thing I've seen for the Google Home if it does. Still not sure if it's worth $140 though. The reviews are pretty bad. It's a bit like a smart watch, cool but doesn't really do much.

        • @carleast:

Yeah i know. I wonder if it's possible that the Google Home is only compatible with the Chromecast or does it also work with Smart TV own casting feature.

        • @hollykryten: Yeah it's only compatible with those verified as being Chromecast compliant (latest version). My 2016 Panasonic accepts Chromecast slinging for Netflix and Youtube but won't work with Google Home as it's not fully compliant.. urgh

        • @kudoz:

I bet the Google Home is specifically designed that way, so there's more sales of the Chromecast. Both devices are made by Google.

        • It makes sense that Google will focus on compliance for only certain devices, and that would be devices they have control over in regards to firmware and hardware. Supporting software / firmware they don't have control over wouldn't be viable. Just like apple controls it's ecosystem.

Although some TVs have an Android "like" OS, sometimes they are Linux under the skin, or heavily moded version of Android.
