Messy failure down in Melbourne. Many street corners look like hard rubbish collection zones. I'd like to know how frequently each bike is serviced as one bike near me has been trashed for weeks and looks abandoned, reflectors are 20 metres away and it's unroadworthy. Even if just a bell is missing, the rider is subject to a fine or fault in a crash.

agreed, I have found numerous dumped in bridges, even in the yarra in/around docklands.

Should never have been allowed IMO. Yes you have to find a dock, but Melbourne bikeshare is much better IMO

How do they guarantee that there's a helmet with all the bikes? Unless I'm missing something, the helmets aren't locked on after a ride, so there isn't anything stopping them mysteriously going missing.
Do they go around and re-helmet ones that get reported as having them missing or something?

    • They don't. I literally haven't seen a single one with a helmet and this is in Richmond where there are hundreds. Presumably all stolen.

The normal price for a ride is $1.99 per 30 minutes

That seems ludicrously expensive. Four bucks an hour to ride a bike GTFO.

    • I know right? Compare this to China where the first 30 minutes are free.

      • In Brisbane, the first 30 minutes are free (CityCycle is the name of our bike sharing program).

  • China bike share clone. why dont they clone the rampant bike dumping solution thats offered by the Chinese bike share companies in china as well? rather than launch this blunt market grab in Australia and make our streets unsafe.

Walked past one the other day, didn't see a helmet with the bike.

Doomed to fail. Don't risk your $69.

    • Has anyone tried to get their deposit back?
In China, the bike hiring companies are known to not give deposits back when you want to quit.

      • I tried oBike when I was in Singapore and after requesting a refund I got my deposit back in 3 days.

If you decide to ride again you'll need to place another deposit. Any further refund requests (after the first request) would attract a 4% transaction fee.

  • These are about to get banned in Melbourne. http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/they-are-clutter-lord-mayo…

  • I've seen them tipped over in Melbourne, beer bottles in the basket, scattered everywhere, tipped against parked cars. So messy.

I don't understand how anyone thought it'd be a good idea and not have these bikes just vandalised or strewn around.

I just walked by some of these and the blue bike share bikes. Neither had bells. Are these unroadworthy? It sounds petty but it is policed, especially if there is an accident. It seems like a huge design oversight.

"All bicycles must have at least one effective brake and a working bell (or similar warning device)."

" risking on-the-spot fines of $194 and up to five penalty points (equivalent to $755) if the case is taken to court."

Not sure if they have a bell, but I have say, there's a simple fix: we should stop policing people's bicycle bells, lol. This is why we can't have nice things, Australia ;-)

  • +1

Try riding one. The bell is likely part of the left grip. You turn it and ding ding

They are great here in Sydney ! I used one the other night to get home after a night out because it seemed cheaper than an uber.

Seems like Melbourne is full of sjw criminals and non-asian immigrants who can't have nice things.

  • In Adelaide you can get a bike to ride for the entire day completely free of charge lol. Good bikes apart from the seat, which is absolute shit.

    • +5

yeah but the negative is you're in Adelaide lol

  • These Obikes are super convenient. The blue docked bikes are ok but not as convenient. My observation is that Obikes were being used today as I saw approx 10 others actively being ridden vs no blue bikes here near the MCG Melbourne. Let's see if I still use them when the free offer ends.
