Steam Link App Free for Samsung Smart TVs (from 2016 Onwards)

190

Save $27-$36 or so, and 1x hdmi port :)

Samsung Electronics announced today the expansion of Valve’s Steam Link to all of its 2016 and 2017 Smart TVs, including the recently released QLED TV line. Samsung is the first TV manufacturer to have this application live on its Smart TVs.

Instead of connecting Steam Link hardware to the TV, this technology enables users to stream their favorite games from their in-home PC directly to their Samsung Smart TVs via an app in the Samsung Smart Hub. If users connect the in-home PC and TV and run a Steam Link game service on their PC, they can play the game on their Samsung Smart TV screen via the Steam Link app.

Yeah I was gonna say "wow $27 thanks" but you beat me to it :)

Nice concept, but be interested in knowing how the controllers will work.
Can you pair up the usual console controllers?
Does the app have any virtualhere usb support?

    • +1

I have read the xbox controller works well on it.

    • +1

I'm using a 360 controller and a $5 aliexpress xbox wirelesss adapter at the moment. Keyboard/mouse also worked fine as expected.

      • Good to know! Thanks.
I still have the archaic physical steamlink box plugged in myself, but I have an older tv model … for now.

        • Is it a Samsung?

I had an… interesting experience earlier this year which resulted in Samsung swapping my 2014 UA55HU8500 TV for a new 2017 MU7000 on the basis that they had breached their "Future Ready" promise and failed to deliver an UHD evolution kit in 2016/2017.

        • @KevinL: Hmm, yes it is, but a 2013 I think. Be interested to know some details on that!?

          @Wimma: Some comments here: http://whrl.pl/ReVphZ

Basically when I purchased my TV it was sold with a "Future Ready" guarantee which implied annual availability of an evolution kit to update it to the latest technology (http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/tv-audio-video/television…).

Samsung actually define this as a TV that can be upgraded annually for five years, commencing with certain models sold from 2012 (http://www.samsung.com/ph/support/skp/faq/1052518).

The last evo kit was released in 2016 in Australia (but was actually the 2015 hardware) so effectively there was no 2016 evo kit; similarly there are no plans to release a 2017 evo kit - hence they have breached their undertaking under fair trading legislation.

Similar cases have occured in other jurisdictions: http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?id=1483114260&subaction…

They initially offered me a free evo kit, but I argued (successfully) that I really wanted to upgrade to the 2017 software e.g. so that I could have 4k steam link streaming.

        • @KevinL: Thanks for the details. Pretty sure I can't apply for it - only found: "Compatible with select Full HD TVs from 2013 and 2014 (2013: LED F9000/8000/7000; 2014: LED H8000)" but definitely worth everyone checking!
          Cheers.

        • @Wimma: What model is your TV?

        • @KevinL: Only an old UA50F6400

        • @Wimma: Right, wouldn't apply to your TV as the evo kit was only available from series 7+

I find playing Rocket league on the TV and with Steam Streaming, the 15 to 20ms input lag due to image processing on the TV, plus additional network lag + wireless controller lag becomes very noticeable and it makes it 3x harder to score goals.

    Ok for RPG's though.

    • Does the tv have a game mode. Usually the good ones do. They switch off as much as possible of the preprocessing and fix the lag (mostly)

      • game mode reduces lag between input and display times, here you have encoding and decoding (in addition). YMMV

        • The statement above was about games being lagged. That is the difference between input and display.

      • It did have a game mode, however when I measured it (using a fairly primitive method) I saw very little improvement.

It could be that I have a crappy TV. Hisense Series 3.

        • Samsung's have some of the lowest input lag in game mode. At least last time I checked.

    • From memory I got sub 10ms playing via ethernet (if you believe the stream stats).
Shadows of Mordor looks good and played great anyway, I couldn't tell any difference wrt lag.

nice, but apps on samsung tv is full of bugs. worst tv os ever. better to invest in an android tv box

    • I have only been using Plex and YouTube on KS9000 and they've been fine.

Which year and model TV do you have?

      • +1

2016 6 series model, the two apps mentioned above is the most buggy of all. Youtube app frequently stacking video clips into one single space and no one can deciper what's in there, the plex app's mouse pointer goes missing 80% of the time making it impossible to navigate through library.

        • Updated firmware?

        • @Spackbace: ditto

        • There's a mouse pointer in the Plex app? The one I'm using, it just has a selection border around options and I navigate using the directional pad.

        • I had the same issue. It seems the major issue (for me at least), was that once the TV went into standby (which it does when you power off using the remote, by default), all these issues occurred. Plex selector disappeared, Spotify would freeze, youtube vids stacked.
What I discovered is that if you hold the power button on your remote down for 5 seconds, the TV powers off properly.
Turn it back on and everything works a treat.

        • @ToastySteve: Same experience with XboxOne for me. I have to restart the console through the system settings frequently when apps get buggy, ~once every two days.

        • @ronnknee: that's what i mean.

        • @ToastySteve: thanks for the tips, will try next time. Sounds like Samsung just get a dud copy from Micro$oft.

        • @ToastySteve:

Thanks for the tip, I will try that next time apps freeze.

If your computer has widi, dlna or projection function (Windows 10), you can project to your smart tv without any software.

I just bought a steamlink a month ago from the EB sales. Works perfectly over Wireless AC1900 (both my PC and switch are AC1900, not sure about the SteamLink).
Great for playing through Hollow Knight, ABZU, and Tekken 7.
I'll give the Samsung App a crack tonight if I have a sec and let you know how it stacks up against the real thing.

    • Allegedly the hardware in the TV is better than the standalone box - e.g. it supports 4k streaming (which works surprisingly well on my wireless AC network).

Welp, I almost forgot to follow through, but remembered I said I'd do this at about 1:30am this morning.
      Here's a quick bit of footage I threw together - https://youtu.be/MP5pD4yLMZs

Overall I'm pretty impressed. The TV wouldn't pickup my Nintendo Switch Pro controller (Hardware SL does), but it worked fine with my Logi F710.

As you'll see in the video, most games ran fine.. Until they didn't. This might just be the KS9000's wireless not being that great… Or it could be the app.
If someone has a wired up Sammy that can test, it'd be interesting to see how it goes.

For platformers and fairly basic games, I'd say the Sammy SL App would be perfect.

I really prefer they can just make good dumb TV and don't worry about smart features, much prefer a computer in the living room

    • Totally agree, Having a full windows HTPC give just about unlimited options.
Still running Win 7 here, need a Media Center replacement that doesn't make DVB-T hell to configure and use before i jump to W10.

      • Media Portal?

        • Was fiddly and unreliable last time i tried it.
Will continue to monitor it as an option.

      • Plex? Has DVR now. Anything via HDHomerun I guess should be good.

        • +1

Not keen on having to fork our a subscription, but wouldn't rule it out.
Is it easy to setup ?

::edit:: Took a look, seems alright.
If the lifetime price gives me a solution that works throughout my home and all devices, and it's not a nightmare to setup i might give it a go.

  • Dualshock 4 support?

  • Damn, my TV is 2015 model :(
