I only ever use hotel booking sites when i have a coupon code, which means you dont earn free nights at hotels.com. The Expedia 12% off MasterCard promo will work out better on some bookings plus you earn points even if using a coupon code which can be used on future bookings at Expedia.

add ~5% cashrewards and that's pretty much the diff between 33 & 50.

Because people are lazy and usually stay with a company regardless of service, cost, etc.
Banks are a good example. Most people stick to the banks they joined as school kids.
That's why companies lose money to get new customers. Ozbargainers rotting the system is a cost they have to bear. 😊
Hotel reward would have been a free night at 10% of price of 10 nights booked and used. That's at least $33, so $50 isn't much more.
Of course you don't need to book 10 nights to get this deal….
