So is this brand new of factory seconds?
Is the difference just the additional Custom RAM?
Anyone know if display extends as a monitor for a 2017 Macbook Pro?

    • brand new

      • Bonus. But the difference in buying from Grays vs Apple is really the additional custom RAM?

        • +2

difference is if you purchase it through apple its $3319 vs $2519.20 on grays

      • +2

In product description, it says this item is 'Resealed'.
Is it really brand new ?? Was the box opened ??

    • +2

They are actually $2999 from apple store so you are getting ram and Radeon 575 PRO instead of Radeon 570 PRO. The one in OP hast the Radeon 575 PRO. The one with Radeon 570 PRO is $2699 RRP. So it's a savings of $479 + extra 8gb ram. From Apple Store

      • +16

extra 8gb of "Apple Ram". Which as we all know, is far superior to normal RAM.

      • +1

No. That $2999 one would have a different model number.

    • +1

      hi, how are you

did any one recieve the imac 5k today?>

i got my one in this morning.
but found it is the 2699 model. 3.4. with 570 model (coming with 16gb ram) but not the i5 3.5 cpu with 575 model.
      they have 300 diference. !!

      plz check your one !!

      • +1

yeh I just got mine. its the wrong model. not sure what to do. as it does have the extra ram and comes with the Magic Trackpad so its still a 'saving' of ~$500. but still. feel kinda cheated.

        • Thanks for reply.
Which mean they made this mistkes
          I think we could
1 asking for refund and they paid the delivery fee
2 or we asking for 200-300 dollar back for the difference.
          What do u think?
I already required a refund case.

        • @wangb427:

yeh i'm really not sure what i'm gonna do. i'm using the imac right now and its great. and it is still a few hundred cheaper than retail. but its super dodgy that they advertised a different model.

i've sent them an email explaining whats happened. and am waiting to hear back from them. will keep you updated.

        • @bonnemaman: sure.
I will also let u know what happen to my case
          Thanks again

        • @wangb427: Just out of curiosity (I didn't buy one of these), how long is left on the warranty? (https://checkcoverage.apple.com/)

        • @atj:

1 year left according to that site.

  • +6

Such a shame selling a computer at this price with only a fusion drive.

    • and only a 1TB fusion drive - there's no upgrade path for the HDD.

      • +2

        Storage:

1 TB Fusion Drive composed of a 24GB SSD and a HDD (7200 RPM)
2 TB Fusion Drive composed of a 128GB SSD and a HDD (7200 RPM Seagate Barracuda 2 TB ST2000DM001)
3 TB Fusion Drive composed of a 128GB SSD and a HDD (7200 RPM)
dedicated SSD drive: 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB or 2 TB of PCIe x4 (4 lane) NVMe flash storage

        • +1

          @ malouphix

1 TB Fusion Drive composed of a 24GB SSD and a HDD (7200 RPM)

The current model 1TB Fusion now ships with 32GB flash. Not as good as 128GB, but better than last gen's 24GB.

        • @quarrymaster: Thanks for the update quarrymaster.

      • Installing non-Apple SSDs means that iOS turns off TRIM support on the SSD.

If you are buying an Apple, they want you to buy Apple upgrades.

        • I think you mean macOS/OS X.

        • +3

That is no longer the case. Any release after 10.10.4 allows trim support for 3rd party drives through terminal.

        • @SpinningPlates: I meant OSX, and I stand corrected.

        • @ [RedHab] (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/api/folder/list/c?tid=5000932)

Installing non-Apple SSDs means that iOS turns off TRIM support on the SSD.

TRIM is supported now, but may still need Terminal.

Note Apple's SSD is NVMe, no the slower SATA. However I saw this dude on YouTube who swapped out his SATA hard drive with an SSD, and re-enabled the new Fusion Drive pair! That was pretty cool!

      • I never understood why Apple decided to reduce the SSD on the 1TB Fusion Drive. My Late 2014 iMac 5K came with a 1 TB Fusion Drive composed of a 128GB SSD and a HDD (7200 RPM)

          $$$ ?

It's otherwise ok on a 21.5-inch iMac with soldered RAM and capped that at 8GB… On the 27-inch iMac with user upgradeable RAM, that was borderline "criminal".

    • +1

Include a 5k monitor as well. Just plug in a lacie thunderbolt SSD. The fusion drive works well most the time lol.

    • +2

Agreed. I found this video interesting.
This guy purchased the base model iMac + the NVME drive option and upgrades the hardware him self to save some serious coin.
Probably not an option for any one that cares about their 2 year Apple AU warranty, but a good watch.

for most people, Radeon Pro 575 with 4GB of video memory is not a necessary upgrade. and I would say no to extra 8gb of "Apple Ram".
This deal based on the ebay PRESENT code doesnt sound attractive to me.
The lowest 5k spec in apple store cost 2699, I think it should be enough for most of the users. you can find it with 20off somewhere else on ebay.

    • -2

Honestly people buy the worst Apple products for extremely high prices so buying a new one and selling your old ones isn't a bad idea. The fact that I can sell a iphone 6 for $400-$450 and a Pixel is $600 (second hand) tell us a lot about the influence the Apple brand has over the masses.

      • +1

yeah I know, I just saw the other day a MacBook with a damaged screen and liquid damaged for around $400 while you can but brand new Dell laptop for around the same price. Crazy world

      • +2

Its not just Apples "brand". Reliability is the main factor in why their products hold their secondhand price so well. From MacBooks to iMacs, iPhones etc etc I on sell apple products all the time and get 50-70% of the original purchase price back. So in the long term they are often actually cheaper than competitor products.

        • -1

I don't think reliability plays an important role. It cost heaps of money to fix an apple product if anything goes wrong. Also, apple now going towards not serviceable devices such as if you damage the trackpad or the keyboard they will tell you they need to replace the whole mid frame including the battery which cost around $600.

I think the high prices because most people think apple is a top brand and fashion nowadays. Don't get me wrong, I like apple quality and their products but not at these prices.

        • +1

Hmm the resale might be a bonus but I generally buy all my products to use and not for the resale value. Don't get me wrong it's a nice bonus when you can upgrade for cheaper but I would much prefer to build a PC for $2000 and sell it for nothing than deal with an iMac for $3,449 and sell it for $2000 in a few years.

but they thing with re-selling is you can't resell niche items as easily. Like an iphone is simple to sell as most people need a phone but take the Mac Pro $4,899 -$6,499… you buy one of these and you will struggle to sell it later on for a good price. I only say this as average people get to a point where they don't understand the product. Take a BMW if you showed someone the same year BMW one standard (+M sport package so visually the same)and one being an M-Series I would bet a lot of people wouldn't understand the difference in price tag. (I'm sure some guy car will grill be but it was the best example I could think of on the spot.)

But have you had any experience yourself with selling iMacs, Mac Book Pros, or Mac pros? (I mean beyond just selling your old products but more so flipping them) I am genuinely interested as I have only dealt with iPhones but I stopped as consumers were near retarded when understanding the iCloud lock and kept asking if the phone made calls. I'm not saying you are wrong btw but voicing my experience and what I have seen on the market, so Id be happy for you to tell me there is a good margin selling imacs as I might start shopping for a few.

        • +1

It is not good to use % to evaluate the resale value of an item. An item that costed $2000, when sold for 50% less is $1000. An item that costed $1000, when sold for 60% less is $400. However, the net loss on the $2000 item after selling is $400 higher. So, you are not actually better off.

It is very typical for Apple users to quote better "percentage" resale value - don't get me wrong, I am an Apple user too (because when you do the maths that way, it makes the Apple products look good). The reality is that if you buy Apple products, you are not after the resale value. I am paying Apple tax every time I purchase an Apple product. I am okay with it. Just need to remind myself to resist buying these Apple products when people posted these OZB deals.

Also agree that it is easier to sell iPhones compared to Macbook Pros and Macbook Air.

        • +2

          @msmhw:

Well personally reliability played a huge role in why I bought a Mac. I actually used to be a PC guy but after selling Apple for a few years, I witnessed it being the only brand we never had an issue with. We'd get hundreds of Windows laptops back and typical turnaround time was atrocious. But out of the thousand or so iMac/MacBook we sold, only ever had one back (it was DOA 27" iMac replaced under warranty).

I recently upgraded my 2010 MacBook Pro to the 2016 model. In 7 years never had an issue. I agree the non-serviceable parts of the new models sucks but with the build quality being so good I have confidence that won't be an issue. Also Mac OS is so much more intuitive than Windows and I can't be bothered messing around with hackintosh. So yeah Mac for me. Use Android for my phone though, can't stand iPhones.

        • +1

@Ryballs: I cannot quite agree with that. I have Macs failed, brand new iPads having dead pixels (and the new replacement had the same problem - got fed up and decided not to try the second replacement). iPhones / iPod toches with broken home button. Most Apple products are made by Foxconn with parts made by companies which also make parts for PCs. Not a fan of Apple using all USB-C ports on Macbook Pro 2016 or later (no more magsafe, no LED indicator on charger or power cable, and has been a pain for me getting a whole bunch of cables and converters).

Also, it is possible that your customers went to Apple store to get the warranty service done instead.

        • +1

@netsurfer: There wasn't an Apple store in Perth at the time.

Maybe their reliability has diminished since those days? As I just bought a new 15" Macbook Pro, I sincerely hope not. ;)

Yeah I'm not a fan of their touch devices like iPad, iPhone etc. I find iOS to be too restrictive and they don't seem to be as reliable as their computers.

        • @Ryballs: I don't quite like Apple's decision to go all USB-C ports. With Macbook Pros costing quite a fair amount, it doesn't make sense to buy cheap USB-C charge cables. But then, Apple USB-C charge cable only supports USB 2.0 (not to mention that hardly any device accepts USB-C port - only the really new ones and they cost more). The Apple multi port adapter's HDMI is limited to 4K@30Hz. So essentially, Apple's official cable/adapter cannot support 4K@60Hz.

I cannot throw away all my existing USB 3.0 devices or replace all of them with USB-C enclosures. I also refuse to buy a new 4K monitor right now with USB-C because hardly any of them supports HDR properly. With USB 3, using adapters are generally not a good idea (as it can lead to speed reduction and reliability drops). Think about USB 3.1 gen 2 cable cannnot be longer than 1 meter. Even using the wired Apple keyboard will require a dongle. Most of the quality cables I need are not available in Australia so I have to purchase them from the states.

Apple also stopped the discount for all USB-C adapters / cables (they were already expensive with the discount).

        • +1

@netsurfer: Do you need to use the official adapters though? I just bought some cheap ones off eBay..

        • @Ryballs: I prefer official, because I know I can go back and get a replacement one when it breaks. But, I need 4K@60Hz so official is not an option anyway.

FeeBay, the way some of the sellers write the description, they either have no idea or they are trying to trick people. How can any USB-C to USB-A (or USB-B inc. Micro version) support USB-PD? They are putting in 100W support for those - that's just plain lie. For USB 2.0 cables/adapters, I might consider feeBay products. USB 3.0/3.1 ones, I prefer to get slightly better ones at least. I am still waiting for Google to post me their USB-C to USB-A 3.0 adapter.

For power charging, I am definitely sticking with Apple official ones for now.

I thought I purchase Apple products to make my life easier. With this USB-C mess, I need to do extra research to filter out the rubbish cables/converters.

  • Should I buy the additional apple care plan extended warranty? Any ideas how much it'll cost?

    • +3

nah just pay with a credit card that gives free extended warranty, also you will be covered by consumer warranty

      • +1

Good point. AMEX does cover an additional 3 year free.

        • +1

i might be wrong, but I had issues in the past using AMEX with grays on ebay, think graysonline have removed the option to use AMEX via paypal eBay, will either have to use another credit card or weigh up if its worth paying $120 more & buy directly from graysonline website where they accept AMEX

(though first try using AMEX on ebay see what happens)

        • @RogueWolf: but if its via eBay I'll be paying using PayPal linked to my Amex. Should be okay I think

        • @joeyhoey19: yeah somehow its been removed on when you try using it at checkout on graysonline eBay, give it a try though but didnt work for me last time

        • @joeyhoey19: Yeah i think you are right. I recall now.

      • I haven't made a claim with the extended credit card warranty before, but just bought a new MacBook Pro using my Westpac Amex Platinum card. So in theory, is the extra warranty on top of the Apple 1 year, or on top of the 2 year ACL warranty? I would hate to get caught out if I have any issues between 2-3 years and didn't buy AppleCare. You can buy AppleCare within the first 12 months of purchase, but it's nearly $500 so can't justify it. Hoping the CC extended insurance is enough.

        • +1

its on top of the 1 year, $500 for extended warranty personally wouldn't pay that, with CC warranty, ACL & apple warranty you should fine, sell it in 3 years when all your warranty options are exhausted & upgrade

    • +3

I wouldn't. At this price range you should be getting at least 3 years statutory warranty under ACL. Apple themselves state: "[under ACL] 24 months of the date of purchase. For the avoidance of doubt, Apple acknowledges that the Australian Consumer Law may provide for remedies beyond 24 months for a number of its products." I would like to think that "beyond 24 months" would apply to a flagship MBP/iMac, but YMMV.

      • hmm… might have to get the additional ACL. damn more money spent. How much does it typically cost?

        • +3

          free

        • @RogueWolf: Wait the additional 2 year extended warranty with Apple Care isn't free?

        • +2

@joeyhoey19: lol no, his talking about consumer warranty ACCC, though manufacturer states 1 year warranty they still may have to cover you for years more under Australian Consumer law Consumer guarantees

        • +2

@joeyhoey19: ACL is not Apple Care. Australian Consumer Law (ACL) is the national law for fair trading and consumer protection. Under ACL, consumer guarantees apply for a reasonable time depending on the nature of the goods or services and may continue to apply after the time period for the warranty has expired. If a product or service you buy fails to meet a consumer guarantee, you have the right to ask for a repair, replacement or refund under the Australian Consumer Law.

The following consumer guarantees on products apply. They must be of acceptable quality, that is:

          safe, lasting, with no faults
          look acceptable
do all the things someone would normally expect them to do.
acceptable quality takes into account what would normally be expected for the type of product and cost.

          Products must also:

match descriptions made by the salesperson, on packaging and labels, and in promotions or advertising
match any demonstration model or sample you asked for
be fit for the purpose the business told you it would be fit for and for any purpose that you made known to the business before purchasing
come with full title and ownership
not carry any hidden debts or extra charges
come with undisturbed possession, so no one has a right to take the goods away or prevent you from using them
meet any extra promises made about performance, condition and quality, such as life time guarantees and money back offers
have spare parts and repair facilities available for a reasonable time after purchase unless you were told otherwise.

          Hand to the forehead*
My bad. I am with you guys now.

        • +1

@joeyhoey19: The official Apple warranty might be one year. However, I find that Apple do offer good support on their products after one year. For mobile phones, they actually need to support them for 2 years.

I had my broken iPod touch replaced by Apple after 2 years. The support staff said it was still under warranty (well, deep down, we both knew it really wasn't - if you checked it online). My friend had his iPhones replaced after 2 years too. You will get refurbished ones. One of his replacement ones had a battery issue later on (the battery expanded in size), and he got another replacement. Apple generally provide good services. Obviously, you don't highlight the fact the item is out of warranty. Just bring the item to them and see what they say.

For a desktop, it is unlikely you will be moving it a lot. Accidental damage is unlikely. The benefit of improved international warranty (while you are overseas) doesn't seem relevant - why would you bring an iMac overseas? Phone call support - you can always phone a friend instead.

  • In product description, it says this item is 'Resealed'.
What does 'Resealed' mean? Is it refurbished? Why was it opened?

    • "Please Note: Item been open to test the functionality only."

      • Usually other stores do not open them (like Myer, DJ, HN, OW … etc). Is there any reason why GraysOnline do not trust their supplier for these stocks?

    • hi, how are you

        Good luck ~

For my own curiosity, was the package opened? Are there any signs of scratches on the keyboard? Usually keyboard is the first place to show if it is a used computer.

i think that is a good deal.

        • same email i got too. have replied that i accept it. so hopefully they refund the difference.

        • @bonnemaman:

Any idea what the refund difference is they are returning?

        • @nomadian:

          should be $200 yeh?

i paid $2510. if they are valuing the item at $2310 that should be $200 refund. unless i'm stupid. which is quite possible.

        • @bonnemaman:
I confirmed with them that it's based on their eBay price listed minus their net cost due to their mistake. So like 800ish refund
