How does this phone rate up against the galaxy s7 or galaxy s8? Is the A5 in a whole different category?

    • +3

A5 is mid-range. Lower power processor. Having used one and an A7 (same hardware), these are good for general use and more casual games IMO. Camera is good resolution but no OIS, so a little harder to get a crisp pic. Another point to note is that most reviews complain about the fingerprint reader, however if you add the same finger 3 or so times, I find it really accurate.

    • The A series is supposedly more after build quality than performance to address ex-Apple users who complain about this. Hence why they still command a higher price tag. The S (and Note) series will always command the fleet though.

  • Nice phone overall. Good built quality.
    Good for general use.

  • Been looking to upgrade my s5 mini! Thanks OP!!

Was tossing up between this or spend a bit more for an s7.. guess this will do! Not really a big user and just want a reasonably sturdy phone that can last a while

Dont think my s5 had an ois anyway so shouldnt bother me too much

Any opinion on whether this is better than the Motorola G5 Plus, surely that phone is hard to beat for the money?

I got this for my wife for $400 from dwi a while ago, the camera's are good as is the build quality (very close to S7 in build) but i still think Moto is as good in many ways (possibly not as nice in build) and has a better version of software than the sammy's.

Based on personal opinion, i hold software and UI as more important when it comes to similar spec'd phones or flagships as the distinctions between chipsets is small in those instances (camera aside).

G5+ if you want just android. This is you like the samsung bloatware. JB has the g5 plus for $350 so a little cheaper. Main difference is ussb vs ubs c for this phone. I went with the g5 because it means I don't have to replace all my cables yet.

G5+ is the way to go. save $100 also. better camera, better software

Would struggle to pick this over the JB HTC 10 $499, beats it on everything except waterproofing and maybe battery life, the A series have great SOT apparently.

    • Can attest to the really good battery life on this phone.

Rather get an LG G6. Waiting on a deal for it. Come on store reps!

  • I have been using the Redmi Note 4 4gig Ram 64/Rom duel sim Snapdragon for the last 2 months and is a fantastic phone only $260 delivered by DHL from AliExpress in kess than a week, I am really impressed with the speed and quality of this phone.
Redmi does not have NFC or IP68. I as looking at the A5, but spending double for a mid range phone, naa maybe not

  • The OnePlus 5 64GB with 6GB of RAM will be available for $599 AUD next week (locally sold by OnePlus) so that is a consideration too for anyone who demands the best spec out of a phone and is a shutterbug.

The HTC 10 at $499, OnePlus 5 $599 or grey import G6 $530ish are all better buys than this imo
