Can these be used for google play credit?

    • +2

You can use the $30 prepaid credit as $30 google play credit if you select the long-life or simplicity plans iirc.

      • Can I then pay for Netflix with it?

        • I've never personally tried so I can't guarantee but I would think you can since you can purchase netflix with google play credit

        • @the69thhokage: oo that would be good then.

        • +1

Confirming I have used these for many months to pay for my Netflix subscription

        • @ccrap: With every new sim, do you have to open a new Google Play account then Netflix account or can you link to existing Google Play?

        • +1

@BargainHuntrr: no, can use any Telstra sim on your google playstore for Telstra billing, only condition is that sim must be in the phone at the time of purchase (even while roaming) and of course Telstra billing must be enabled for that sim

        • +1

@lgacb08: yup, what ^ said. You can use same google play and netflix account, just have sim in fone logged on to the relevant google play account

        • Thanks for the info legends

        • @lgacb08: Whoa you can do it while roaming? That's awesome.

        • @illumination: yeah, just make sure you don't use roaming data for downloading such app or streaming.

      • -1

        Can anyone else confirm?

        • +1

Confirm what? That you can use them for play store credit? Yes, provided that you activate on simplicity or long life. That you can use them to pay for Netflix? Yes, I have for many months.

If it's an app or in app purchase on the play store, than you can pay for it using this credit.

        • @ccrap: What happens if you have $1 credit left on the SIM and would like to buy something $2?

        • @ccrap: I remember there is this trick which you activate it as Prepaid Plus and switch to simplicity so you get calls /data as well as recharge credits to spend on Google Play. Not sure if it still works though.

        • +1

@MadMaxBargainRoad: That loophole was closed last month. The $30 is not switchable across plans anymore and is available if activating on simplicity or longlife and staying there.

        • +1

@gorillainwild: it won't allow it. I've tested this many times including purchasing quickly before the balance 'catches up' just to test. You can't split payment either, so you'll need to just choose another payment source and buy it that way.

      • can you use optus/vodafone prepaid sims as well for google play credit?

Still got a tonne of these to use up before November from when they were $5 at Coles 18 months ago

    • I did the same (well, pricematched Coles at OfficeWorks to get it for 5% less at $4.75), but you should have been activating them and using them! From Sept 2016 until mid July 2017, activating a $30 starter kit as Prepaid Plus got you $30 of credit (which was spendable on Google Play if you changed offers then changed back) + $5 of bonus credit (which I personally donate to charity and get a $5 tax deduction) + 28 days to use: 700 mins of local calls/texts which later became unlimited calls/texts + 1.5 GB of anytime data + 1.5GB of night data + the full Telstra network. For $4.75, that was an epic bargain!

But, the $30 of credit is gone now (Telstra fixed that oversight in mid July 2017), so now you either get the inclusions or the credit, but not both. Plus their competitors are offering far more anytime data. So these kits are still handy, but just not as good as they once were. Plus they expire, so they have a limited lifespan before they become totally worthless, and from what I understand they often expire earlier than the date printed on the pack (best to use 1 or 2 weeks before expiry to avoid a nasty surprise).

So I think the trick with Telstra kits is to just get what you will personally use - I see how many months there is until expiry, and then will stock up with between 1/2 to 2/3rds of that number, but no more. E.g. when it was 18 months until expiry, I held my inventory at around 12 starter packs, which has actually turned out to be close to the perfect amount (I might have just one too many). The gaps are filled by other prepaid specials that appear on OzBargain, such as Kogan / Ovo / Amaysim, or with port-out port-in using the 7-eleven freebie $2 SIMs.

  • In future, we could deploy our own app to the store for $30, and cycle through these kind of sim cards buying our own shit / generate free money right? ;)

    • Except google charges 30% commission.

      • $10 clear profit for each pack you can get your hands on

Sounds good to me. Infinitely scalable?
Next time there's a deal like this, I'll retire!
edit: Don't forget the free burritos from Guzman Y Gomez

        • +1

          @idonotknowwhy:

          Infinitely scalable?

Yes and no. It has been mentioned here before that if you have 5+ sims under your name at Telstra then your account is flagged and activating new sims becomes more difficult. Remember that sims stay active for at least 6 months after your last recharge expired. So you have to do a Telstra online chat and ask them cancel all sims under your name before ramping up again. Not ideal for retirement-level profiteering ;)

edit: Don't forget the free burritos from Guzman Y Gomez

Had one today! (from a previous free sim deal)

        • @tomclancy: Thanks for the tip! I'm nearly there!
Do any of the telcos let you keep buying sim cards forever?

        • +1

@idonotknowwhy: Don't think so. At least not prepaid sims

        • @idonotknowwhy:

less than $10 now , due to 10%GST~

        • @idonotknowwhy: Nothing is actually infinite or ‘forever’, but as far as I know telcos don't actually stop you from activating, let alone buying, more than five prepaid mobile services. The requirements for identity checking may get more stringent and less convenient, but forgetting for a moment your likely preferences for convenience and non-detection (or simply not drawing extra attention by either the telco or the authorities), I know for a fact it's entirely possible to have dozens of Telstra Pre-Paid Mobile services activated in one's name.

If your position is that you simply want to ‘earn‘ your benefit and do whatever it takes to legitimately (by industry regulations, and also terms and conditions of the individual offer) take advantage of loopholes, you won't just be singled out individually and stopped from doing it.

        • @ASmugDill: Right. I guess they don't care if I pay for 365 sim cards legitimately, even if I only use them for free burritos, etc.

  • Help.
I got two of these believing that I could add $30 credit towards my existing Telstra pre-paid number.
When I tried to activate this $30 starter pack SIM card online and selected to keep my existing Telstra prepaid number, I got a message saying that this request could only be processed via 24x7 chat. But agents have no idea what I'm talking about and I feel like this is going nowhere with them. They suggested that I get a blank SIM card but what for….
Did I just waste $22? Is there a way to use these credits on my existing Telstra number? I don't use google play or apps on this existing number. I only use it for SMS.
    Thanks

    • What type of service is your existing prepaid with Telstra? Simplicity? Long life?

  • When I tried to check out it said out of stock but then my credit card got charged?!?!
Should I have received an email confirmation of order? I don't have an account with them though…

  • Have folks received the starter kits yet?

I got a dispatched email on 28/8, Sydney metro, my mail box got broken into last week :( wondering if someone's got hold of my sims.

  • Google play credit has been disabled now… should have used them sooner…went to grab maria run at half price and no longer works…
