Thanks for the info. This sucks what's the point launching in here then.

        • The major advantages are direct shipping and direct warranty support from manufacturer.

        • A Xiaomi Powerboard will solve your problem.

        • +1

          @thangcuoi:
Nope, won't fit. It doesn't take the UK Type G plugs.

        • @TheContact:

That's a bummer. I thought Xiaomi Powerboard was suppose to be universal.

        • @thangcuoi: It's just Chinese sockets, which happen to be compatible with a range of International plugs.

    • yes the UK charger sucks but I have an US version and I ended up buying an extra charger, I know it's a pain but a cheap adapter does the job without any dramas. If you end up buying one make sure you use their charger as it charges your phone ridiculous quick

      • +1

True, that's how I change my phone. Dash charge contains circuitry inside the charger. And dash charge is damn good.

      • +1

The nice thing about a UK charger in my experience is they work much nicer when using a convertor. The US and EU chargers always seem the move about in the converter, whereas the UK plug always seems to make a firm connection.

        • Exactly! he UK version would be better then US or EU version if you are using an adapter. Sometimes when I plug in the wall I have to fiddle with with the adapter in order to start charging

Buy the Oppo Vooc charger it's the same thing as Dash Charging. Oneplus uses the VOOC tech and just rebrands it. It works, I've got the OP 3T, dash charging works a charm. https://www.mobileciti.com.au/oppo-vooc-flash-charger-mini-w… If you don't believe me I am willing to post pictures. Just make sure you use the Official OnePlus cable with it.

      • Does it need any specific cables for Dash Charging to work?

        • You need either official VOOC OPPO Cables or the official OnePlus cables :) Because DASH/VOOC Charging requires both components for it to work. But boy oh boy does it work well. The one which comes with the phone will work.

    • Just buy an Oppo Flash Charger (VOOC) online. It is the same thing and will dash charge the phone, Oppo == OnePlus

      • No idea why most people aren't mentioning adaptors, save $30 and grab one of those from your local electronics store - dash charging works perfectly on it. The Oppo doesn't even come with an extra cable.

        • Adapters are bulky and also if something goes wrong eg. a fire if your insurance company sees you're using an adapter in many cases you wouldn't be able to claim.

        • @Kerjifire:

in many cases you wouldn't be able to claim.

Have there actually been cases where an insurance claim was rejected because a travel adapter was used?

I definitely prefer getting a charger with the right plug, but it is a waste of a good charger.

        • @eug: It's mainly from experience working in an electrical store. I've had customers tell me that :)

        • @Kerjifire: Ah, I was hoping for actual evidence (newspaper report, industry report/website etc)rather than anecdotes.

The display is not as good as a $1200 phone but you can't tell anyway. The camera is not as good as a $1200 phone but you probably won't notice. It's not waterproof. Future software support uncertain.

    https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2017/06/the-oneplus-5…

    • +6

very valid points, but its also not a $1200 phone!

    • +2

Main problem for me is no expandable micro SD slot…

    • I reckon software support will be fine, Oneplus did a decent job on their previous phones when it comes to having the latest OS. Also the Oneplus 3/3T are expected to get the Oreo update, good chance that the 5 is going to get android P and maybe even Q.

    • The camera is worse the OP3T

      • are you sure it's not your shaky hands?

  • Thinking about getting one of these (unlikely that this year's pixel will be this cheap)

Is it worth the upgrade from what I'm using already?:
Nexus 6 running Pure Nexus Rom

The camera on Nexus 6 isn't exactly stellar but I think I'll miss the QHD screen and size…

    • -1

I was a 6P user before the bootloop issue. I dont think you can only notice the screen difference if you hold them them side by side.

    • How about getting a current gen Pixel or even a Nexus 6P instead (if you can find one that is)?

      • Nah, price of current pixel still too pricy. Even those used condition from Gumtree. I can get this OP 5 with newer specs with that amount of money. The 6P is great. But bootloop issue relate to hardware is common so no.

        • But you get what you pay for.

        • @OnlinePred: then it depends on what you want from your phone. I don't find anything from the Pixel would bring more benefit to me.

        • @johnnyle: I 100% agree. I would rather go an S8/S8+ over Pixel anyway. Although OP5 is really tempting, for not much extra on a grey import s8/s8+, you get ALOT more for the money.

        • @OnlinePred: I was a Samsung user for a long long time since the S1, S3, jumped to Note series then the latest I had was S7 Edge. in my personal opinions, they were loaded with too many Samsung software that I don't need. They aren't even that great to use compare with those apps I already bought on Play Store so stock Android is the way to go for me. So again, it depends on personal matters. haha

        • @johnnyle: Yea if you already paid extra for third party apps etc then it makes less sense. When I buy a phone, I actually use the ecosystem I buy into. Would be silly to buy a Samsung and not use their software. But given how great their apps are, especially when compared to many paid apps on the playstore and apps that are included by other OEMS, it offers a lot to users willing to try them. But yes I completely agree with the too many apps issue. Luckily in the latest few iterations, it automatically disables apps you don't use etc. And also the added battery life you get from TouchWiz is nice too :-D

        • @OnlinePred: Yea, I know they are improving overall, giving how laggy and buggy they were in Note 2 or S3. But still, not good enough for me. haha

        • @johnnyle: haha going from note 7 to pixel proved that aosp isn't good enough for me 😋

        • @OnlinePred: including the explosive function? haha

        • @johnnyle: 2 RMA's later, it may as well have

    • unlikely that this year's pixel will be this cheap

Unless they decide to sell you a Nexus 6P disguised as a Pixel.

  • +1

I'm really on the bridge whether to jump on this or wait for the Pixel 2 and LG V30 release. It's a shame they couldn't include an AUSTRALIAN dash adapter charger with this soft launch. Hopefully in the future when they do decide to do an official launch they'll include an Australian one.

There's a lot of debate between getting this or the LG G6. Make no mistake both are great devices in their own rights, but kind of do feel that the G6 has the advantage in features over the OP 5.

    • +1

No way the Pixel 2 will be priced anywhere close to this…

    • G6 also cheaper, only problem is waiting for a deal.

      • +3

Forgot to include this in my last comment:

        LG G6
        * Price can be found for much less ranges from $450-$480 (Average)
        * IP 68 Resistance
        * Better screen/ no jelly screen effect
        * SD Card Slot
        * HI-FI DAC/Wireless Charging can vary between which model you get so keep that in mind.
        * Very small bezels on the display
        * Doesn't look like an iPhone 7

        OP5
        * SD 835/6-8GB RAM
        * Slightly better camera depending on the situation
        * Stock android like software with Oxygen OS on top
        * Better Battery Life
        * Dash Charging - Much fast charging, but have to use their proprietary cable and charger can't use 3rd party accessories

        • A couple of other points for the G6 - the second wide angle camera, mil-std 810g rated (no that I'd be willing to test it). LG's not great with software updates.

        • Where is the g6 at that price?

        • @wxyz234: waiting on a deal… been waiting for a few weeks!

          Come on reps!!

It has come up at ~$480 a few weeks ago. I would personally pay a bit more though for local warranty/

        • Don't forget oneplus 5 no OIS!

        • …meanwhile the LG V20 seems great value around $420 with current eBay discount code ;) does it seem that much bigger in size?

        • 2 more points to consider:

          • The LG G6 has a locked bootloader in this region which cannot be unlocked (so you're only going to get LG's software and nothing else), whereas I think the OP5 will let you run any ROM you want (and there's ROMS on XDA for the OnePlus devices). LG devices are unlocked/unlockable in Europe and in the US on T-mobile, but not here.

          • Also expect the LG G6 will give you very limited software updates. E.g. on my G4 they released it with android 5.0 (a few months before 6.0 came out), updated it from android 5.0 to android 6, then did 2 security updates for android 6 (with zero feature changes), and have done no software updates since (so no security updates for the past 6 months or so). LG have committed to releasing android 7.0 for this device in 2017 Q3 (under duress, it's pretty obvious they didn't really want to do it, so they're really taking their time), but android 8.0 has just been released, and my phone still does not have 7.0 available yet (so currently running 6.0 which means I'm now running a release that's 2 years behind the latest and greatest on the pixels/nexuses). And after 7.0 is released, that's almost certainly it, no more software updates, basically this model is dead to LG. OnePlus on the other hand give me the impression of being much better with software updates (more frequent, and over a longer time period).

        • @nickj: Based on what though? OnePlus 2 and X were released after your G4 and both won't be getting Android 7.0 Nougat.

And 2 Android version updates is actually good and on par with Nexus devices, obviously not speed though.

        • Spot on comparison between the two but I would debate the OP5 having a better camera though :).

The portrait mode in OP5 is nice but its not the best performing (I have used the P9 and and currently on mate9 which to me do a much better job). While the DxoMark rating for the OnePlus is higher that doesnt necessarily mean it translates to better pictures in all conditions.

The LG G6 has a bigger aperture and OIS. Being a photographer I would always go with a camera with these two any days.

The wide Angle Lens on the LG G6 is very useful addition on top and the Manual modes are among the best around (even has manual focusing with focus peaking !!).

The only area for me where the LG G6 is a let down is the front facing camera which is average but even in the front facing camera you have the option to go wide which can be useful at times

Also I would add the 18:9 screen ratio as a PRO for G6.

Unless you have a very precise landing, you will most likely miss this if you try to jump on this from a bridge. It also depends how high the bridge is :)

  • I have One Plus 3t, using it since last year, pretty good. Though I had to buy it from overseas and get it delivered here.

  • -7

Price is ok, specs are great, but the only concern I have is whether they send my data to Beijing.

    • +4

I think you should be more concerned about your data been sent to Google in America then Beijing as its pure Android OS

    • They already have all your data !

    • +1

The Chinese are not as dirty as the Americans

    • +14

Because Beijing really wants to know about the Pornhub search history of some dude from Australia.

  • +1

Absolutely, this is a good phone, I have the 8g+128g version. Best value. But the only thing is, my eyes don't like the screen, they feel so tired during the night or in the dark light. Maybe only for me…….

    • +1

Android implemented colour shifting in the display settings. Shifts the colours away from the blue hue as it gets dark. Sounds like you're a perfect candidate for it!

  • I have a oneplus3T 128GB A3010 bought for $630 a few months ago. Upgrading official oneplus roms is very easy and the oxygenOS auto updates. Cracking phone and unbelievable battery life particularly after flashing to 7.1.1

The phone does it all I would absolutely reccomend

Can only imagine the oneplus 5 will be as impressive particularly for the price

    • So do you need to manually download the ROM updates? Never owned a OP phone before. Is it not like other phones where updates come via OTA download and update?

      • Yes I downloaded and installed Android 7.1.1 using recovery mode. One plus will provide plenty of advice/help if you msg them. I don't know if Android updates come ota but the os updates do.

      • They come via OTA, unless you're rooted. (own rooted Op3)

  • -5

Security updates are pretty much non existent on these. If you value that, stay away! I almost pulled the pin on buying one too.

    • Android security patch was just updated to August on the Op3, and this is the Op5, I find it unlikely it would be behind on updates.

    • You can always run a custom ROM with the latest security patch.

  • +8

I have the Oneplus One, which I bought 2 and a half years ago and it is amazing! Love the phone. Best phone I have ever had!

    • +3

Still rocking the OnePlus One here also! Pretty good deal for this one though.

Hoping it goes well for their soft launch, maybe we can finally get an AU charger.

    • +2

Still rocking my OnePlus Two for the same reason. Little intent on upgrading, when this one is so good.

    • +1

Still rocking my OnePlus One. No intentions of upgrading. Love it.

      Currently on the Lineage Nightly's

    • Still have the one too. Best phone I ever had. Sadly the screen broke and the replacement screen is not very good, slowly lots of areas are not responding. In the market for a new phone now. If I dont decide to spend 500+ on the new 5, I would still be happy with an older model.

  • I am tempted. My Nexus 5x is only 15 months old though :( I hate the battery life so much that I almost wouldn't mind buying a new phone early…

    • Invest in a Xiaomi battery pack? Should last you all day.

    • 15 months was around the time my wife's nexus 5x developed the 5x bootloop, back up your data or be prepared to buy a heat gun to recover it.

      • I'm crazy, I had the Nexus 5 which was affected by the bootloop issue. I got the 5x as I didn't have a phone to use… shame on me haha. I can say never again now, but I should have known better.

Luckily I do backup everything, I have a Surface Pro 3 and it came with a good amount of online storage, so everything on my phone backs up.

Edit: to be fair, my 5 lasted over two years

  • Is it easy and cheap to get another dash charge charger?

It seems all the popular chinese brand (blitzwolf, Anker etc) only makes QC compatible charger….I don't see anything Dash Charge compatible ones?

    • No, it's proprietary tech sadly. Even their own battery packs don't support it.

      • Yea, that's no good….

Great price for the specs, but I read above no OIS on lens, no IP68, no expandable micro SD, only 1080p screen makes this a no buy for me…

      • Kerjifire seems adamant OPPO Vooc charger works

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/326520#comment-5018884

        • Yes I can also confirm the OPPO Vooc charger works. OnePlus is made by OPPO so would make sense that it would all work.

One thing though, you have to make sure you use the official OnePlus or OPPO cable for DASH charge. generic ebay cables will charge at the slower/normal rate.

  • Can I claim GST (trs)? Band 28?

    • +1

      Confirmed no GST

      • No ABN on your tax invoice?

        • It says Tax: A$0.00

    • +2

      Has band 28.

  • Just got one

  • Got a 128GB / 8GB in Midnight black - looks like that model has already sold out.

  • I wonder why it come with a UK Type G plug charger instead of an Australian charger, given this offer is from OnePlus Australia?

    • Soft launch to gauge demand for users here - would probably cost more to make Australian chargers so just easier to get the UK plug in

  • Got a Slate Grey 128GB and a car dash charger. Midnight Black sold out.
