Made of Aluminium Plastic and you're supposed to start a fire with it? That ain't going to last long.

Call me simple, but how is this unit not MUCH WORSE than an ACTUAL/traditional 'ciggy lighter', which is waaaay smaller, lighter, more robust, relatively water-proof, contains a flint/striker, etc.? BTW, I have an awesome SOLAR POWERED UMBRELLA for sale, if anyone is interested… of course it only works if the sun is shining and it is not raining…

You're simple, clearly never been in the scouts or considered starting a fire without a lighter. What happens if you're in the bush or elsewhere and your lighter stops lighting? Or runs out of gas?

Simple, Carry 1 or more spare lighters. If with vehicle, usually a lighter already there. I have walked through in remote areas for 8-12 days & would never set out without backup lighters in waterproof container.

Not much use waiting until next morning's sun to light a life preserving fire in an emergency.

The times you need a fire are usually the times there is no or little sun for this to work.

This is a toy, not a trusted survival tool.

So many easier solutions to a problem that I'd say rarely occurs for most OzBargainers. Certainly easier than waiting for this to arrive before lighting up.

Unless you smoke how many people carry lighters with them or in their cars?

A smart person wouldn't rely solely on lighters but would carry firestarters (flint/magnesium etc) or alternatives.

This is something that can be kept in a bag and will work when you need it and it can also be used for signalling something a lighter cannot. Clearly these are not intended for smart people like yourself who can grab a lighter from his car to start a fire.

          @Maverick-au:

how many people carry lighters with them or in their cars?

Quite a few. Electric cigarette lighters are fitted in many vehicles.

will work when you need it

Come off it! ^conditions apply (must have good sunlight) That is the problem!

Most people already know how to use a lighter or matches, this will need a little time & training to perfect. That is after waiting for it to arrive.

Hope the instructions are in English, but most can work out use from photos.

A lighter can be a great signalling device at night & easily start a controlled fire, so don't go bush without at least 1. Use a mobile phone to call for help - works in many areas. Batteries in torches etc can't be relied on.

I have done a rescue in remote mountain area because a person needed emergency assistance in bad weather - no sun available for signalling or a fire in near blizzard conditions. They needed warmth urgently. If they had pulled out one of these, I would have thought they were crazy!
I have had a rescue party preparing to find me - again no sun to light emergency fire. Both areas were well beyond mobile reception & it was hours of walking to nearest emergency radio.

And you have to take this unnecessary item with you. Left behind in a drawer like many purchases Ozbargainers make won't help. That's a far too familiar OzBargain experience.

Never said I did! I certainly didn't just take lighters - they were emergency back up kept waterproof. And I also carried a stove with built in lighter.

can grab a lighter from his car to start a fire

I rarely light an open fire. Controlled camp fires are enjoyable, but lighting fires in bushland is dangerous. Think before you do that. Have had to deal with idiots recklessly lighting fires, causing major bushfires🔥 threatening life & property. When you've sat through a few nights running on fire watch (ready to evacuate if conditions change) stinking of smoke, you may appreciate the risk.

It's a toy. Great for the kiddies to set fire to things😱

          @Infidel:
I don't think most cars are fitted with cigarette lighters theses days. I haven't had one in the last three cars I have owned. It has the socket but not the lighter.

        • @madreece:
Thanks. Was wondering about that. Answered my thoughts😋 Edited my comment.

So many vehicles on the road are still likely to have one. (I don't as I don't need it.)
There's still a major energy source - the vehicle battery. Wires attached to it will easily light a fire.

A lighter or matches is still easier than using vehicle lighter or this toy.

But if you have a vehicle in an emergency, just use it to leave if safe to do so.

It's a toy for OzBargainers because cheap lighters are on sale everywhere, but for people with no access to lighter fuel it could be a life saver. Banggood sells stuff to all over the world and there are certainly places where this would make a great survival tool.

Here's a video of an entire village in Haiti relying on a very similar solar contraption for cooking, because the people had cut down all the firewood in the country.

          @safrane:
Never visited an area where people don't have access to lighters, matches etc. And I've been to some remote places. Tobacco companies rarely miss an opportunity to sell their products, so lighters & matches are common.

Care to suggest an area where people live that has no access to another means of creating a flame? I think tobacco companies would like to know.

Have even been to remote disused trappers cabins in the Tassie mountains - they carried in very heavy cast iron cooking stoves over a few trips, to spend winters up there. They didnt leave light weight matches behind. They're a practical, cheap solution to lighting fires when you need them, not just when there is clear skies & good sunlight.

Solar stoves are practical off grid solutions. Good for a pioneer natural disaster area like Haiti. I've used them decades ago. Far healthier than burning dung used in some areas of the world. But a world away from this so called "environmental" plastic gadget. Definitely don't suggest this land fill to solve world problems.

This is just a hyped up toy - which some of us might enjoy playing with.

  • Terrible title, not much better description.

  • So… what is it?

  • +2

    Does it have bluetooth?

    • What about band 28?

      • indeed, that's neg'able offence. Unless it's Xiaomi of course.

  • Another alternative is the magnifying glass

I just came her for the comments.

    • A bit like this product on a cloudy day -
they didn't light my fire 🚒

  • A parabolic mirror that focuses light for starting a fire would make a terrible signalling mirror. The light would diverge to the point of being unnoticeable after a few metres…

    • Could start a fire and make smoke signals?

  • Allow you to get a free burning,

    Free? That's value right there!

    • Noticed that. Well ask them to send you one for FREE😁

  • +3

Ozbargainers should already know that in case of emergency, you can start a fire with an eneloop and a piece of wire.

  • Impractical to store in glovebox or toolkit (4" x 4"), unless the center detaches.
Get a flint from surplus store maybe?

    signal mirror??
Only if you attach your torch at the coil/focal point.
