Ex-Demo ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q Gaming Monitor - 27", 2560x 1440, IPS, 165hz, G-SYNC - $699 Pickup / + Delivery @ BudgetPC

830

Pretty damn good price considering these retail for >$1100 new.

Product page: https://www.asus.com/au/Monitors/ROG-SWIFT-PG279Q/

Saw this suggested on a discussion on a Facebook group, and a few of those who contributed bought the monitor earlier this week and were happy with what they received, so decided to post this.

Delivery seems to be around the $20-$40 mark.

1 year warranty.

Enjoy!

Once you go gaming monitor with G-Sync/FreeSync, you won't go back, really

    • +10

Until G-Sync with HDR is released… then you won't be able to go back to these monitors :P

      • Yeah but thats going to cost an arm and a leg

        • +1

So you're saying I'll be able to keep my remaining kidney?
          I call that a win.

        • You're forgetting the kidney.

Edit: damn - beaten to it!!

    • -7

G-Sync is nothing compared to OLED technology , The Infinite Contrast of OLED VS Having less rare Screen tearing issues .. It's a clear win for OLED , though OLED + Gsync will be amazing, OLED is much more important.

      • -1

        contrast is just marketing gimmick!

set your tv to 100% contrast, see what happens to the picture lol!

before you say, but I never set contrast to max, ask yourself why you need all that contrast?

        • +1

"Contrast" on your TV or monitor is simply saturation. Not the same thing.

With that said, OLED is great but needs to be made more responsive before it can be used in high refresh rate monitors (otherwise you get smearing of colours / frame residue as the pixels try to keep up with a fast refresh cycle)

        • You have no idea what you're talking about lol!

      • Not if you're a gamer. Frame rate > all else.

2% surcharge on payment - Is that illegal now?

    • Oh crap didn't know about that…

      • +2

I'm not entirely sure if it is completely illegal - I just remember this: https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/prices-surcharges-receipts….

EDIT: No surcharge on direct deposit though - if you go that way!

        • "Those payment types that are not covered by the ban include: BPAY, PayPal, Diners Club cards, American Express cards issued directly by American Express"

Why not AmEx. I'm sick of places trying to rip me off with a 3% surcharge for AmEx.

        • +1

          @nurries:

Those payment types on the ban only mean that the merchant can't charge more of a surcharge than what the bank hits them up for processing those payment types. It's not illegal for the merchant to charge a surcharge for those payment types. So it's not really a ban on surcharge itself, it's a ban on an excessive surcharge amount on those payment types.

Oh and by the way. 3% surcharge is standard on AMEX payments, it's the amount which AMEX charges the bank to use their payment processing facility. And even if AMEX was on the list of that banned list, it means that the merchant could never charge more than that 3% surcharge. A surcharge itself is not banned.

        • +1

Saw this on my news feed today.
Beginning tomorrow for all merchants. Was only for large merchants for the past year.
          https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/excessive-payment-surc…

        • @nurries: Why are American Express entitled to the sellers profit because you support them, and their higher fees?

        • +1

          @nurries:

Yeah, you have to charge higher for people using Amex as Amex fee's are simply higher, you get nice rewards etc. but someone has to pay for that, some stores just take it as a loss, other stores like this once charge you a fee.

        • @Major Mess: Because the merchant chose to use American Express's payment infrastructure?

        • @Diji1: That is nice of them, and they still offer legal tender as a payment method.

        • @hollykryten:

I'm aware of that as you can see from my comment below. AmEx not being covered by the ban means they can charge excessive fees for AmEx issued cards.

        • @Major Mess:

If you as a retailer want to accept a payment type, then you need to cop the fees yourself. When I sell on eBay I don't go charging customers 10% to cover eBay fees and ~3% to cover Paypal fees.

        • @nurries:

You're right, 13% is too low. That's why I hike my prices up 15%

Depends how much their bank is charging them. And the ban starts tomorrow.

      • -1

        Interesting

    • +3

No. The ban was businesses charging more of a surcharge than what it costs the business by the bank to conduct the transaction. Surcharge itself is not illegal.

"The purpose of the ban is to stop businesses from charging payment surcharges that are excessive. That is, from charging a customer more than what it costs the business to process the payment.

A business is not required to impose a payment surcharge, but if it chooses to then it is only allowed to pass on to the customer the costs that the business was charged for accepting payment of that payment type."

      https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/prices-surcharges-receipts…

    • as of tomorrow its banned i think.
but i think its a ban on 'unreasonable' charges. whatever that means.

      • As i said. The merchant can no longer legally charge the customer a surcharge of more than what the bank charges them to process the payment. They can still charge a surcharge if they want.

        • +1

          This is a good read.

          https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/prices-surcharges-receipts…

They can add a service/handling fee only if it isn't based on payment method. Once it's based on payment method then whatever they want to name the extra cost will still be covered under the ban.

        • @unco:

"The ban does not apply to any payments made for taxi services. Taxi services were excluded from the RBA standard because the industry is already regulated by state and territory regulators."

What the absolute shitting (profanity). Taxis used to charge 10% for card. Ten percent! I don't know if they still do as I havent used on in years, but you would think this would crack down on the (profanity).

    Was just about ready to click the button, then found this review;

    http://www.trustedreviews.com/reviews/asus-rog-swift-pg279q

However, ongoing concerns about Asus’ quality control over backlight bleed mean that some users will find they have to buy and return several samples before they end up with one that satisfies. I believe most users won’t actually notice the issue, but for those that do, it’s a concern.

And considering it's ex-demo, what's the likelihood of them letting you return just because of backlight bleed?

    • Could you contact Asus? Runtime shouldn't effect bleeding?

    • i called them up about the back light bleeding they will test and provide evidence

    • +9

All these units aren't ex-demo. They're all returns from people who claimed the backlight bleed was bad.

Don't believe me? Call them up and ask for yourself :)

      • Would the bleeding become worse over time?

        • no, it will stay the same, but your perception of it will either irk you or you'll forget about it, but paying for a new monitor and the quality control being shit, i would RMA it too.

    • And yet you +vote?

  • +8

It's only been ON for 1,000 hours

    • -1

Sorry does it specify this somewhere?

I could be blind can't find it?

    • +1

Nothing compared to what I'll be doing to it.

  • +1

    Acer just showed off more of its X35, 200Hz, G-sync, 35" 3440x1440p Ultra-Wide, HDR.

They didn't specify panel type but fingers crossed its the same as all X product line as IPS.

    • its va but an improved version.

    • +1

Its a Curved 35-inch, 21:9 ratio VA panel with a 4ms response time, 200Hz refresh rate, and 3440x1440 resolution. Floats my boat, fingers crossed it is released soon

      • AMVA, I really don't like VA / TN panels being curved , dem viewing angles.

Have you seen AMVA panels in person, even with HDR, i have a feeling the colours won't be sRGB accurate… but hey you'll have 200Hz to view your nice shades of black.

      • ETA is Q4 2017. The ETAs often change.

        • I will personally buy you one if it is released in Australia Q4 2017.

        • @cypher67: It will most definitely be delayed, the X34P was announced at IFA last year to be sold in November 2016, it is now august 2017 and still nothing, not even a peep.

X34p is the X34 on steroids (Base clock is 100Hz, better OSD and Controls and monitor stand.)

        • @jerjergege: The X34p will be skipped completely and they will move onto the X35. There is little incentive to release the X35 prior to Volta, even a 1080ti wouldnt be able to push 200hz even at UHD 1440p. They will time it accordingly, specifically with the new 4k 144hz monitors in the works. Demand will be extreme, prices will rise and everyone wins except the consumer

        • @cypher67: I hope not, I personally don't want a curved display that isn't IPS, colours washed out on VA and TN just because you move your head a tiny bit since the X35 is AMVA, X34 and X34P are IPS.

  • i rang them up to ask few more questions, they said they will do what ever tests we request and supply evidence, asus directly support any issues

  • Nice timing, picked up thanks

  • +6

Why do they have so many "demo" units? Are these not more likely to be customer returns for faults?

    • +1

I assume customers complained about backlight bleed, they took them away and either did nothing or fixed it and now they are reselling.

      • Well, Everyone is meant to recycle! ..People don't want to believe this but I can definitely confirm they wouldn't be the first ones to do it.

      • If you use your computer in the dark, then the backlight bleed is much more noticeable/annoying.

  • +6

    Cheap but suss on ex-demo

  • tempted, would a 1070 be enough to drive one of these?

    • Yup, not all the way to 165hz in every game but that's what Gsync is for.

    • Yes. I run a 1070 with an old 2500k and can play close to my max 144hz but with G-sync it's like butter anyway if it drops.

      • Haha, I have the same pair.

  • Just bought one, thanks for posting

  • +2

Amazing price for what you're getting. Backlight bleed can be an issue but has been present on other manufacturers too.

Worth the risk at this price and if the previous posts about testing and return policy is ok, then this is a no brainer.

I've got an Acer XB271HU personally and couldn't go back to non-gsync/1080p

  • ex demo or too much bleed… at this price its ok.

  • ordered, thanks OP but mostly thank you Mr Ethereum

  • Looks like sold out Lads. Mate tried order got call back out of stock.

  • +3

Just picked mine up. Only slight backlight bleed in one corner, not too noticeable. ASUS refurbished sticker on the outside. Worth it in my opinion!

    • Is the body of the monitor in good condition, like no scratches on the screen or anything?

      • +1

It's like it was completely untouched. All the tape, stickers and what not were not tampered with at all. Checked for any fingerprints / dust, couldn't find any.

        • Ah that's great to hear, mine was just shipped to me, hope it all goes well.

  • That GST charge.. with $24 delivery comes out to 723.20.. no thanks

    • +3

      ????

      Are you serious or joking?

      • ?????

        • +1

          GST is always 10%?????????????????????

  • end game monitor for many ppl, really worth it.

also pick up monitor mount for ultimate setup like this one

  • +4

I've pulled the trigger on one of these after what feels like forever just waiting for the right price. I'm pretty nervous about how bad the BLB might be because of the copious hype on how bad the BLB can be compounded with the fact that it's an 'Ex Demo'.

I feel a little more at ease since I spoke to a salesman and had confirmation that warranty and returns are still available even though it is 'Ex-Demo'. Also, he informed me they aren't all 'Ex Demo' and some are returns or just RMAs that have been refurbished.

As someone who uses their monitor for gaming as well as graphic work I think it's really either this or an Acer XB271H that are the pinnacle of all options.

I'm hopeful the hype isn't as bad as some people want to think or I get one that I find acceptable - I'll update once I receive for potential future buyers as they'll likely sell out quick AF at this price! Fingers crossed.

  • For those have have bought it, I'm on the very edge of buying it as I'm planning to buy a new PC build inc a 1080 ti in the next few months and I've been looking at the ViewSonic - XG2703-GS 27.0" 2560x1440 165Hz Monitor but that's $899, but if this monitor is of equal quality I'll pull the trigger.

    • +1

      Better quality IMHO

    • +1

Alright bought it, hopefully can pick it up tonight and will post the results and any issues

  • Where do you see 1 year warranty on the page?

  • +1

    This or ultrawidescreen?

    • I have an ultrawidescreen and I almost pulled the trigger. 2 main reasons- I dont play competitive games so dont really need 165hz and second was I have a 1080ti which can drive the resolution @ 60 just fine.

And to be completely honest, ultrawide has blown me away and as someone who likes the whole immersive experience of games, never buying a non-ultrawide monitor again

      • Thanks for your input, I'm going to wait and see how much the Acer X35 will sell for.

  • +1

Great price. Would buy if I hadn't bought an Acer Predator already.

  • is the backlight bleed issue ad bad as people are saying?

    • It would depend on what you actually get but apparently not.

  • These were about $900 in the past sale:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/320910

What makes this monitor better than a $400-$500 (when on sale) 2K monitor?
Is it just the high refresh rate?
Can you really get 165Hz (or do you require some special high end GPU)?

    • You require at least a gtx 1070, preferably gtx 1080.

    • The 165hz is a bit overkill, but you want it over 100 for sure.

Gsync removes any shortcoming of not being able to make it to 165fps.

      • The Acer predator Ultra wide has less Hz, but its 34".
        This might be better option?
The only games I play on PC is SC2. But I would do a lot of word processing etc.

        • Once you go beyond 27" you start having to move your eyes to see things, which is normally not what you want with games.

        • @Shwayne:

But supposedly more immersion. Happy with my Acer Xb271HU here and couldn't see myself going ultrawide either but each to their own I suppose.

  • cant see deal? anyone else have this issue?

  • Getting this purely for the g-sync module..I currently have the MG279Q. Thanks Nvidia lol

Be interested to compare the two, I don't know if I have the back light issue at present, possibly I do but just haven't been bothered by it.

  • There has been an error processing your request

    WHEN I CLICK ON LINK

    • Did they steal all my money? :(

  • Is this much better than the AOC AGON AG271QG ?

    • same specs, except AOC is $100 dollars cheaper. i would go with AOC monitor, it has stellar reviews and im very certain AOC wouldnt skimp on quality because its relatively new and it wants to compete with bigger monitor brands so it has to have a good first impression with consumers.
