Is It Worth Framing Your Bachelors Degree? ($160)

Hey guys,

I'm due to graduate soon and I'm just looking up prices for framing my certificate from a company recommended by the University itself. Prices range from $150-170, seems like a bit much for a frame. Is it worth getting at all? Do employers require the original copy of the Bachelors Degree ?

Here's a link to the site.

I think it'd be nice, it's not a necessity I'm just eh about paying so much. Are there cheaper alternatives?

Far cheaper to get a frame at The Reject Shop.

I heard they stock Arts Degrees there too.

      • +31

Don't you mean "Bachelors of Attendance Degrees"?

Hey! Flipping burgers is a serious Job, You don't want that one day Gordan Ramsey comes over to smack you over the head for overcooking or under cooking the meat.

        • @xoom: that's not an art though…its a science

      • +1

I know people on Arts degrees earning $100,000k+. Far better than some with law degrees.

In saying that, if you don't put effort into your studies or into gaining external experience, it's much harder.

        • +45

I met a guy with an Arts Degree, he gave me regular Coke instead of Diet. ¬_¬

No employer has ever asked to see mine. Framing it might be useful if you are a doctor or something. I presume mine is rolled up somewhere in my mum's junk.
    $160 bugger that.

    • +6

All you need is a phoyocopy with your resume.

      • +7

I've never provided one. HR can just do a grad search on the university website to see if I passed or not.

    • +43

    • Framed Diplomas on the office wall of anyone over 25 screams insecurity in your own talents to me.

      • If that's what people are proud of then so be it. If it took them a lot of effort then I applaud them. Not something I would do myself but oddly enough it took me more courage to get my drive licence than to get my uni degree or even do post grad - but that stuff came easy to me whilst I do acknowledge for others it does not. For medical practitioners I can also understand given the sacrifice they made for their achievement.

Mine is still in the University Graduation Day manila folder, in my filing cabinet somewhere. No one has every asked to see it. TBH I can't even remember what it looks like.

  • +14

Mines stuffed in a drawer somewhere, but If I were to get it framed i'd get a $10 one from a gift store.

But yes, employers have asked to get a photocopy of mine (international large company and also small local firm)

Next time why not just buy a degree online with your name on it for a few $$$

  • +1

I've only been asked for a copy of my certificate never the original, I think you can buy more originals from your university if you need it? Though might be a little pricey?

Personally just went to the 2 dollar store and bought a frame from there and framed copies. Just take into account the paper size, one uni I went to used A3 while another used a weird taller A4.

    • +3

Legal, little bit wider and heaps taller than A4

  • +4

Wait until you get a Masters or higher.

    • +3

      PHD maybe worth framing.

        • Sounds like the name of a porn flick lol

      • I initially thought of doing so when I graduated. But it has now been inside a folder on top of my book cupboard for a few years, and I can't be bothered anymore.

    $2 from Officeworks

  • +7

Congrats on making it through! That's an insane price. If you do plan to mount it on a wall, then get the certificate as is, get a frame that fits - plenty around for well under $20 - then scan the certificate first (so can print a copy if requested) and frame it.

If you want it done really well, you can always go to a framing shop who should still be able to do it for a fraction of that quoted price.

  • +2

I've never been asked to provide a copy of the degree certificate itself. I've only ever been asked to provide a copy of my academic transcript; and that was only for my first job out of uni, a graduate position. Yes, it's an awesome feeling when you get your degree, and definitely something to be proud of yourself for, but after you land your first graduate position you probably won't need to produce evidence of your degree. At that point it becomes more about what you know (ie your actual industry experience), and to some extent who you know, depending on the job and industry.

    • +1

I needed a copy of my undergrad for an employment pass (work visa for professionals) in Singapore even though I had post grad quals.

  • +13

I'll take a different perspective to most commenting, it seems.

Yes. You absolutely should. Have pride in your achievements. 160 isnt a great deal of money to frame a 20,000 dollar + certificate. Particularly if your educational achievements are something you proud of.

Further, I have been asked many times to see a COPY of mine. Make sure you print 50 or so copies prior to framing and keep them in a safe place.

    • +37

Make sure you print 50 or so copies prior to framing and keep them in a safe place.

Or just scan it once and print it when you need it…

A lot of employers want documents electronically anyhow, i can't see many people ever being asked for a paper copy.

      • I didn't end up getting to do this. My family purchased the framing option (in hindsight, it's a waste of money but oh well) and it was framed soon after getting the certificate.

I don't want to open it so I just took a photo of it and cropped the borders. That's my "scanned" copy.

      • -1

Or just to keep your 20k degree safe scan it 50 times and save it on multiple computers

        • It's just a piece of paper. The uni will reprint it if you lose it.

        • @Presence: Yeah it was a poor execution of a joke I was trying to make :(

    • Not sure why you got downvoted, I think in the context of a significant life milestone, it is money well spent. Sure you can buy a $2 frame from the reject shop or whatever but you will be staring at it on your wall for many years and possibly decades to come, long after the cost of the frame has been forgotten.

      • Good point, I'll definitely take this into consideration. I was more-so conflicted on the fact that employers may need to see the original copy, so I didn't know if it was worth framing something I'd have to take out eventually.

    • +1

Good to see a different perspective but the certificate appears the same either way right? What exactly is wrong with a frame from any $2 shop when the certificate is still visible in all its glory? Like sure it has a nicer frame, but this Ozbargain. Im sure 99% of us are happy with the tradeoff when the alternative costs $160. Maybe im missing something though

      • +1

Good point. Personally I think those $160 frames are a lot nicer and look a lot more professional. Definitely not for everyone though, especially not on Ozbargain, but in the context of a $20K+ investment, pocket change really.

    • Huh, as soon as I got mine I thought 'ok, that's done, what's next'. Certificate in the drawer (actually I have 3 degrees and a diploma and only went to one graduation because why go thru the boredom for a piece of paper?)

I've been told that reflecting on performance and success is a good thing but I've never been able to do it. Probably a character defect

    • A 20k degree is unheard of. I did 5 years engineering from 2008-2012 (with diploma in engineering practice as part of the degree) and it was a total of 34 subjects costing $40k. Now that same degree I believe costs over $50k?

      • A 4-year Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering degree cost $10k 15 years ago.
In another 15-years will degrees cost $100k?

  • +7

My hecs bill was less than that back in the day

  • +10

I've never been asked to show proof of any of my qualifications but that's probably because I don't have any.

  • +1
    1. Frame it yourself is just as good. Better yet pick one which matches your wall.
    2. Some places (eg for work visas overseas) will need a copy of your degree (as others mentioned) so get that done in advance BEFORE framing it.
  • +5

Get a plaque. It is about the same money, then you can keep your original handy, avoid it getting discoloured or sun faded and still be proud of your achievements.

  • +12

        • @xoom: Speaking from experience?
Where is your sense of humor?

  • +2

I have always been required to show my qualifications, and mostly if is just a scan provided to have on file. Occasionally, certified copies. This is because it is a requirement for my positions. So it depends on the degree and position. Some employers, The salary is increased for degree/s.

If you can afford it, get your university's own frame if it includes your insignias etc. it is indeed something to be proud of.

However, get certified copies and scan it before as well.

Whatever frame you choose has to avoid damaging the degree itself and one that prevents fading too (UV light protection). Otherwise framing and hanging will result in a faded and damaged piece of paper.

For Many professions, it is reassuring for clients to see the qualifications hanging in public space. If this is not relevant to your case, then place it in a folder or other safe place but again ensure it goes not get damaged or fade.

The cheap frames do not provide the protection required but yes, they are available from places other than your university and professional framing is not essential either. However, at least you know they will do a good job and protect it correctly. My son's is beautifully framed and protected. I regret not having it done iwith my degrees.

    • Thanks for the insight! I suppose it is a trophy to cherish and a one off payment wouldn't hurt. I just didn't know anything about framing overall but the general consensus seems to be that it's overpriced for what it is.

    • I had to provide original document for my certificate 5 aka diploma and it affected my wages in a tangible way. Got a Diploma in IT thinking it'd give great opportunity. By the end of it, after looking at the market I was surprised to find myself a job after 3 months.

i framed my degree after graduation (my proud parents paid for the framing$$$$ at the graduation ceremony). 3 months laters I got a job overseas and needed to take the degree. with me. the lonely empty frame still sits in my old bedroom at my parents house 18 years later.

i had to show my degrees at my current job (though I was asked 8 years after starting there….)

as others have said - reject shop frame, OW, or even hit up some ops shops.

    • They specifically wanted to see originals? That's pretty out of the ordinary.
