    Any coupons?

    • I tried to dig up a coupon. Everyone I apply won't work as it is a sale/promo price

  • Personally I'd get the RM Pro so you can control RF devices (such as remote control switches) as well. Beans are mainly good for secondary IR control in different rooms (if you need that).

    • I mainly wanted it to use for Air Con units and couldn't justify the 3x price

      • I'd have at least one RM Pro unit somewhere (which can be had for a reasonable price) just because being able to switch any device on and off has been more use to me personally. Both for being able to turn any mains device on/off, and for easily closing down parasitic devices that use power in standby.

        • What RF plugs do you use?

          Cheers

          @mctubster:

Basically you can use any of those "RF remote control and three plug-in sockets" that you can buy in blister packs for $30. I've not found one so far that doesn't work.

You capture the code into something like 'Home Assistant', and then can integrate it with voice control (Alexa in my case) so you can say "Alexa, turn on fan" and have it work.

I've got the home theatre stuff on one, so it's not drawing power most of the time. Also spotlights, speakers, the computer/printer, etc.

        • @sane:
I have Home Assistant and Google Home and never thought of doing it this way. I was going to buy some wifi controlled power outlets but I like this way better

Would this work with the RM Pro?

          @so3n:

Yep, should do, I've some older similar outlets which work from one end of the house to the other.

Anyone know of any coupon to make it cheaper?

    • I got one of those for my air con's (a Mistral and a Panasonic), but couldn't get it to work.

      • I use it with Home Assistant, to draw it all together. Bit 'programmie' but it works fine if you can edit a YAML file. You just play the existing remote into the device, grab the code, and use that when needed.

There is a potential thing to look out for with air cons. Many of them send strange 'state' code blocks to set all air con aspects at one. There might be some issues with these if they are out of the usual IR controller scope (eg it can't listen and replay them).

        • I thought all aircon remotes worked this way. What brand are you using?

    • I want to be able to close and open my garage roller shutter remotely just because I have left it open in so many occasions. and I have no idea about automation. Can anyone suggest something like this (cheap way of doing it ) . It seems like there are a few smart people around here :)

It's one of those things lots of people have done.

Usual route, without lots of new stuff, is to wire a replacement door remote control to a circuit that allows it to be controlled/monitored remotely, and will sense the door state.

        See https://rayshobby.net/introducing-opengarage/

To make it smart, the sensor can detect if car is there, and with the addition of some smartness in something like Home Assistant, to automagically close the garage doors if left open.

        https://home-assistant.io/components/cover.opengarage/

It takes some electronics and programming, but I do like the sensor that will detect both the car's existence, and the door state.

        • thank you Sane, that sounds quite complicated to me since i have no programing knowledge or electrical skills. Is there something you know that you could buy it cheap that works with garage door, aircon and other stuffs around the home.

        • +1

          @OZB fan:

There are some individual, disconnected, expensive retrofit units, and the designer of that opengarage unit sells assembled ones - but nothing I've seen that I would consider idiot proof AND integrated.

It's all a bit bleeding edge with individual manufacturers looking to own little areas of the space and not playing as part of a team.

        • @sane: thank you Sane

I use Gogogate combined with IFTTT to control my garage door using Google Home and Google Assistant on my phone and smart watch by saying the hot words. Not as cheap as Rays Hobby (a little pricy IMO) but installation was a breeze. From unboxing to WiFi setup to firmware update to connecting wires to open took about 10 minutes.

        • Hi Eva-01, I see they sell this product via eBay in Australia, but they have so many different models and different prices , which one you have used ? And did you have a open and shut switch on your wall ? I don't have one. I only have
remote control, so how does it works for me ?

          https://m.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?isRefine=true&_from=R40&_tr…

        • @OZB fan: I bought the Gogogate2 without the sensor. Made an offer to $170 then used one of those eBay sitewide voucher code. Check if your opener is compatible here. Mine is a Gliderol Glidermatic GTS with no dedicated wall switch. The Gogogate is attached to the opener by connecting 2 wires and it's now 3M'ed onto my garage ceiling.

For anyone interested, there are python modules/scripts that can be used to control this device (https://github.com/davorf/BlackBeanControl).

Can it learn IR command by pointing my remote to it?

    • +1

From my understanding from youtube, yes it can https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7QJpBlhVDQ

    • +1

Yes. I've got three around the house. For most devices, simply learning a single command using the Broadlink app is enough for it to find a match in its database and have all the buttons work.
Alternatively, use home assistant. My setup let's me use either.

    Purchased, thanks.

The problem with IR and some RF switches (Aldi, Jaycar) is they are all one way communication. When you send the command, the sender won't know the state because the device (accessory) cannot reply to the sender its state. It works if you are just replacing the IR transmitter with a phone app, as long as you are there to see the feedback. Especially with devices that only has one button for on and off. Press once on, press once off.

I think Apple has made the right decision in the design for their Homekit where all device must provide a feedback. That way, 2 or more people can control the device and still others using Homekit app on different iPhone or iPad will know the state of the device whether locally or remotely.

  • Slightly off topic but does anyone know how to get RM pro to work with Google home ?

    • +1

      Yep. Mine works great.

I did it using an android device. With Tasker, RM Plugin and Autovoice. Fair bit of setup but now it's great. Super cheap way to have a fully automated home.

Thanks, I'll give it ago :)

  • When a click through the price initially shows as US$11.99 and then automatically changes to US$17.99. :-(

    • Maybe try a different browser or your phone. Failing that try incognito. Still the same price for me

      • Tried incognito. Now it shows the reduced price but can't add to cart

        • all good now

  • Anyone got any idea if these will work with most modern garage door openers?

    • Garage door openers are RF, not IR, and they use updating codes, so can't have the code grabbed. You need another approach for automating these, see above.

    Mine was delivered today, thanks.

  • I need a few more, any more discounts?
