Sony MDR-1000X Bluetooth Noise Cancelling Headphones $349 (Free Delivery) @ Addicted To Audio

730

$100 dollars dearer than the previous Sony MDR-100ABN I was looking at.Some say it is superior to the MDR 100ABN and some say it is same same but different.

I haven't owned one of these before but with the price point @ circa 50% off the RRP I reckon it is a bargain. The cheapest I have found with static ice is $349 through eglobal (grey import?) before delivery on the beige version only.

http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=sony+mdr-10…

Closest I have found is the Harvey Norman deal @ $489

    Let the head cracking begin

Btw the newer version(mark2) had been annouced

      • +1

Any improvements besides the cracking issue?

        • +1

But has the cracking issue been addressed in mark 2?

        • @edfoo:

I read somewhere mentioned they have used different material around the headband , hopefully they don’t stuff up again.

      • +3

Oh thank you! I almost hit the go to deal button.Saved $349

    • I was expecting to get a.. cracking… discount

      • +1

It's Not All It's Cracked Up to Be.

        I shall see myself out.

        • +2

You guys are cracking me up.

  • This headphone takes 2nd place in the best sub $400 headphone poll for 2017

    • -6

The QC35 is quite an indisputable first place.

      • +16

It takes it's spot because of the number of deals we've seen for QC35. If it hadn't been for Shopmonk and eBay Hump month, QC35 wouldn't as strongly be recommended by the community.

I personally don't think the Bose headsets produce the best sound (I own QC20 and QC25 plus the sport earbuds) — Bose might have the best patents and technology for noise cancellation but their sound quality is not what most people consider audiophile grade.

However, community polls are just that and that's why we encourage people to chip in and discuss (on that page).

        • -1

Bose might have the best patents and technology for noise cancellation

The MDR-1000X's ANC is on par with the Bose.

The only reason the Bose are ranked first is the herd mentality.

        • +4

          @elektron:
Except the QC35's are way more comfortable, are able to connect to two devices simultaneously, can last longer than 2 months without breaking, and charge to 100% in half the time… Did I mention how much more comfortable they are?

There's much more to consider in wireless headphones than just sound quality. The Sony's sound better, but it's by such a small amount that the benefits of the QC35 far outweigh the benefits of the 1000X's.

Really though, both are great. I didn't know how much I needed wireless headphones in my life until I owned a pair.

        • -2

@Jebus: This is a very subjective comment.

I personally find the comfort of the Sony's excellent but the difference in the sound quality is massive if you're using an Android phone.

The Sony is the best longer-term investment, since Android O will support LDAC, giving you native hi-res capability, while Bose still can't even deliver regular lossless audio.

You also conveniently omitted the far superior functionality of the Sony's.

BTW, What Hi-Fi have just reviewed the new model and are saying that the gap between Sony and the rest of the BT/ANC market is now even wider.

        • +1

@elektron: There are way too many reports of cracking headbands to ignore - even right here in this post. It doesn't matter how good the ANC is or how good sound; if they're breaking all over the place, they're not very useful. Buying headphones shouldn't be like buying a lottery ticket.

        • -1

          @elektron:
The sony's are a better long term investment? Have you not seen all the reports of how easily they break after only a few months? I can't think of a worse long term investment in headphones than the 1000X's…

Hopefully the new XM2's have solved the reliability issues, time will tell!

        • +2

@Jebus: Just bought my first pair of wireless earphones - Apple Airpods XD

        • +1

@elektron: That's what I've read on reviews for the Sony, They're on par if not slightly better compared to BOSE and has better SQ. Of course, take all that with a grain of salt but there were a few saying it so it could be true.

        • -1

@elektron: what about the headband cracking that caused a class action lawsuit against sony

        • +1

@ProjectZero: as someone who owns 1000x's and did a lot of comparing/trying on before purchase, I agree with the basic consensus out there:

The QC35s are marginally more comfortable (deeper earcups + less weight) but the ANC on the Sony's is better if that's what you're after, sound quality is on par, Sony's seem marginally better but that could be just due to the better noise canceling.

All that said after extensive use, I can say the reason I ended up choosing the 1000x's over QC35's become the thing that annoys me the most about them. I weighed up the above and decided that they are so close that the touch control is what set the Sony's apart and the hand-cup over ear feature.

While I still enjoy the hand-cup over the ear mute feature, it does not pause, so if you don't want to miss what you're listening to (I don't), it's pointless. You have to pull out your device and rewind. You could use touch controls but they are not very functional, if you try to fast forward they often skip to next track and the most annoying part is if you touch the headphones to adjust them, take one ear off etc, you often play, pause skip next track by accident.

TL:DR - Have 1000x but would buy QC35's instead if I could go back in time due to some small annoyances and paying a lot more for 1000x's, that said I still really, really enjoy my 1000x's so buying either set you can't go wrong.

        • @eug: Good point - I forgot about that, but Jebus didn't mention that as the reason for choosing the Bose.

    • +4

How the heck is this even being considered in a poll of "audiophile" headphones, let along taking 2nd place?

The sound quality of both the MDR-1000X and QC-35 are thoroughly mediocre for the price, but they are certainly good at cancelling noise. I personally can't stand to use ANC headphones in any context except flying and the gym — if sound quality is what I'm after there are substantially better options out there, and if some isolation is required I much prefer IEMs.

      • +2

Marketing. And a preference for wireless.

I agree that in terms of audio quality, anything BT with ANC and closed back is not going to win any awards.

But why do you think Beats is so popular? Sound quality has nothing to do with it.

      • +1

Have to agree, sold on my QC35s partly due to the lackluster sound quality compared to decent wired headphones and earphones (ie Fidelio X2, AKG K7XX / 712, HD600, etc.) and while initial impression of comfort is very good, I found the pleather and closed design made them hot, sweaty and uncomfortable after time.

They have their purpose, which is portable wireless ANC, and they really are the best option for that if ANC is your main concern. However I feel they have become a bit overrated here because of the deal frequency (people want to justify their considerable purchase). They really do not compare to a proper set of cans on other criteria.

  • Headband has a notorious cracking issue. I'd avoid it until they come out with the next gen. Pretty sure it's being discounted because of this issue too.

    • +1

They already announced a replacement as mentioned above. That's probably why it's discounted. They supposedly fixed the issue in later production runs. Supposedly..

    • +2

They already have a next gen. IT releases in a few days. And it has a lower retail price. It will also have a huge bump in battery life.

    • -2

wow. the price has really come down. sony must have realised they couldn't be near twice the price of the QC35

      • They're not double the price. They're $50 USD more than the Bose.

The M2 will be the same price as the QC35, but unlike the QC35, Bose never does discounts. If you get any significant discounts at all it will be from those 20% off ebay sales. Or when Myer does a sitewide discount.

  • I have created a Poll if people can contribute -

  • guy at work got these. he's a real audiphile an swears by them. says they have a much more natural sound to the QC35

very torn with buying these and selling my QC35s. The extra features sound worth it.

    decisions decisions.

    • Wait for M2. It will cost a bit more than this, but cheaper than RRP of 1000X. Will have longer battery life also.

  • This is what I paid in Jan. The RRP was ridiculously overpriced.

  • If the going rate on Ozbargain is 400 dollars, then that is my new "RRP"
Wouldn't use 700 dollars as a reference point ever.

    • If it's available every day for $400, then it's the RRP. If you have to wait for a sale, then it's not. Call it something else.

  • If it means anything, I've had these for 8 or 9 months and it has been flawless. No creaking of the headband.

New model supports aptxhd where this is only aptx

  • +1

I regret buying these. I normally use these on the flights and became quite uncomfortable and my ears feel hot after a couple of hours.

    • +2

To be honest I find the exact same thing with every pair of over ears headphones. I had the QC25 and now have these and I had to take a break from the Bose every few hours and let my ears breathe.

I'll admit that the Bose are marginally more comfortable but I really like the features and prefer the sound of the Sony's.

      • How would you compare the ANC on the QC25 to these? I have a pair of QC25 and thinking of upgrading to the Sonys atm.

        • The ANC are very good on both. I couldn't really notice a huge difference between them to be honest.

I upgraded to the Sony's from the QC25 because I got a good price on the Sony's and also wanted a wireless option. Also the touch features are actually pretty useful and I used them a bit on my last few flights.

I think the sound is better as well. Not by a huge amount but combined with the ANC quality, these to me are the best headphones for listening on a plane.

Also worth noting that I don't use these headphones outside a plane/airport. Much better heaphones sound wise that do a better job in day to day life.

  • Wonder if a Videopro rep is seeing this and will match price…

The Sony X Facebook page said that they checked with their support/technical people about the cracking and they have not heard of any issues relating to local stock and believe it be isolated to one batch overseas. Take that anyway you want. I've had mine for about 2 months and had absolutely no issues. I paid $340 from JB.

    • believe it be isolated to one batch overseas.

Except my workmates one was bought from jbhifi. Took ages to get it back after he took it back due to cracked head band. He bought his last year.

    • +1

I bought a pair in Australian stock and they cracked ~6 months. So they're a bit full of shit.

      • Any issues with returning them?

        • +3

No. I sent them back express from Perth (~$18), and received a brand new pair in about two weeks. Unfortunately those were DOA, so I went through the process again, and received another new set which seem to be working fine. As you can see it gets quite expensive.

Having been without the headphones for a month though I picked up a QC35 on sale as a backup set. I was able to compare both over long periods of time and the Sony are definitely better at noise cancelling. But I also like the Bose. And if I had to pick one, I'd pick the one that doesn't break.

    • +2

Got mine from the Sony centre and cracked on both sides after 3 months. Got them replaced and the new one hasnt cracked yet, though it only been over 1 month.

  • New models are coming out for both mdr-100abn (Hear.on) and these ones.

  • +1

    Cracker of a deal

  • As someone who just made the decision on these over the QC35, whose been researching obsessively for 2 weeks and bought these 3 days ago. Ask me anything.

    • Crack on

      • See below.

    • +1

What made you swing in favor of these?

      • Better sound quality for Android phones, more future proof. Found them more comfortable, this is subjective. Can turn the ANC off or to different modes like hearing voices around you or even amplifying voices around you.

    • +1

Great to see you have given it a crack.

      • Will take my chances with the cracking. They look impossible to crack currently. I will force JB to replace them if they crack.

  • Are these Australian stock (warranty) and come with a tax invoice?

    • Yes to both, they ship through Express Post via AusPost if you're curious about that also.

    • Found it regarding shipping information. Paid by 3 pm and dispatched same day.

      https://addictedtoaudio.com.au/pages/shipping-information

    • probably grey import. Their "about us" said "eGlobaL is an online store aims to provide excellent value to Australian customers in Digital gadgets and accessories by sourcing globally. I bought mine 5 months ago and they are still going strong guess I got lucky with mine. But cannot praise the sound quality of these anymore I have the QC35 those have a bit too much pressure when NC is on, and the ambient sound mode on the MDR100X is really the killer feature for me.

    • What is the ambient sound mode used for? It seemed like a lesser version of the noise cancelling system, is that right?

      • So the ambient sound mode has two different modes one is
normal (which uses the microphones to pick up sound outside, it's good when you are walking and stuff it's very precise much better than your own hearing lol)

Voice mode also uses the microphones but only picks up the sound when someone is speaking, it's surprisingly precise and accurate.

This function I find really useful when your ordering stuff and need to be called out(especially in winter use it as earmuffs)

  • decent piece. recommended at this price

  • BAH, Only 2 weeks ago i paid 392$ or whatever it was from the duty free store in sydney, And now its this much cheaper, just goes to show how much of a rip off duty free in sydney is.. As that was meant to be their sale price.

    • Easy.
      1. Price protection guarantee through credit card.
      Or
      2. Buy from addicted to audio, return it to duty free Sydney.

      • Does the price protection work on all credit cards? I have a westpac Black Altitude card. I wonder if Sydney
        duty free does accept returns?

  • Is it difficult for people to hear you when you take a phone call on these?
