PARTY18

Original 18% off Sitewide on eBay Deal Post

After hearing about the 18% off eBay sale today we thought we'd reduce our eBay prices for the rest of today. The final price of the items below will never be seen again (unless eBay does a coupon code like this in the future). Prices below can be accessed with PARTY18 code between 6pm-10pm AEST.

The best deal is the A44 - it's $20 cheaper than our usual price both online and on our website. The other two products are a bit cheaper on our website usually.

  • Voll A44 Amplified / Active Computer / Bookshelf speakers $122.96 shipped. (149.95 pre discount code which is $20 cheaper than our usual price both on eBay and on our website)
  • Voll B44 Passive Bookshelf Speakers $90.16 shipped (109.95 pre discount code which is $10 cheaper than our website and $20 cheaper than our usual eBay price)
  • Voll S6 6.5" Active Subwoofer $98.36 shipped (119.95 pre discount code which is the same price as our website and $10 cheaper than our usual eBay price)

We also have a whole bunch of SMSL/Topping amps in our store which aren't on sale but will still be great prices with the PARTY18 - some will certainly be cheaper than anywhere else on eBay/elsewhere but some may be cheaper from other sellers.

If you haven't heard of us before check out some of the previous OzBargain deals or the whirlpool forums for reviews and discussion.

Edit: For anyone who buys one of our amps and a pair of B44s in the same order on eBay today we'll chuck in a pair of 2m speaker cables for free.

Nice work CB! I'd better tell the neighbours…. you know, the other neighbours who haven't already filled their houses with Volls :)

  • +2

Can an audiophile give me the low down on these speakers. Any good?

    • +14

I completely hate the term 'Audiophile' but others seem to label me as one as I enjoy fiddling around with new & vintage audio & Hifi gear and have heard quite a range of stuff over the years from easily affordable to stupidly rare & valuable (for whatever reason) & lots inbetween. As with everything 'audio' it's very much a personal thing as everyone hears things differently at different ages and across different music types but there's a reason my comment above is actually true… when family members, friends and neighbours have heard my very basic Voll setup either in passing or for a critical listen they usually have a pair of their own within a few weeks so that kinda says it all :) Just decent, down to earth, capable little 'all-rounder' speakers you can throw anything at and get very decent results. They wont shake your house of course but from a clarity & quality perspective they're very well balanced and have a certain 'magic' about them providing a nice realistic sound stage. For the RRP they represent very good value so on sale they're fantastic and then with the extra 18% off on top of that there really isn't a reason not to buy them!

To be honest, grab a pair of Voll B44s with a nice little 2nd-hand 2ch Receiver/Amp off Gumtree or eBay for $50-$100 and I can guarantee you you'll be pretty amazed at how good a basic stereo system can sound… even using your phone or a Chromecast Audio as a source! Add a Sub later if need be but the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle applies BIG time once you get into all things 'Hifi'.

      • I'd be interested in your opinion. I've got an old NAD 3020e amp and some old Celestion DL4 speakers (both must be late 80's) - would connecting up a pair of these B44's be an improvement?

        • +1

Nope! Not at all :) That's a beautiful combo and those DL4s should sound pretty decent. Are you doubting the way they sound? Sure, they're getting on a bit but they should still have plenty of life left in them before needing a crossover recap etc.

        • @SteveAndBelle: Thanks for that - I guess a nice thing about analogue is it ages well.

        • @Ruckmauler: Yes. Hold onto the 3020e though as they're currently worth around $150-300 depending on condition and will only go up with time. The DL4s would probably be about the same but again it's all about condition. You're sitting on a decent little system with a bit of value even now but best to continue to enjoy it and just get it fixed as things go wrong.

        • +2

The Celestions were noted for both sound and build quality and plenty of people still seem to enjoy them.

You are right about the ageing issue, especially for speakers. The best stuff from this period was pretty well built. I have a NAD 7020e (a 3020e with a tuner) and a pair of NAD-badged KEF speakers from 1988 that are all still doing the business. When I auditioned them against new $900 speakers I found out they were not in any need of replacement.

    • +5

In addition to what Steve said - we have a 30 day money back guarantee so if you buy them and you don't like them you can just return them for a full refund - on eBay it's even better because it's completely free to return them to us :)

  • can i buy 2 set a44 to get surround sound ?

    • +1

It depends on your source. If you have a sound card that supports 5.1 output via seperate 3.5mm jacks you wont have a problem as long as your software can mix to 4 channel output.

    • +1

if your reciever has the correct outputs and config setting (virtual centre speaker, etc).

      • +1

Good advice if buying the passive version (B44) as receivers have amplifiers in them.

If wanting surround sound from a computer the 2 sets of A44s will work as long as your soundcard has the right outputs and soundcards software can mix down to 4 channels.

If wanting surround from a TV/bluray player then it's not really possible with the A44 - much better off buying a cheap receiver and using our B44s.

  • Hi Chief,

Quick question, I have a set of B44s driven by a Topping VX2. Digital audio source is a Chromecast audio. What would be the best way to wire the S6 into this system?

    Thanks :D

    • +3

The best way would be to purchase our subwoofer connection kit from our site here: https://voll.com.au/product/subwoofer-connection-kit/

Unfortunately there really isn't another way unless you buy a sub that has speaker level inputs and even then you might find you end up with an annoying hum coming out of the sub - class D amps really don't play nicely with many speaker level inputs which is why we created the above kit to solve the issue.

      • Any downsides to this approach from a sound quality perspective?

Is the subwoofer connection kit on ebay? I'd like to combine shipping (sorry, I'm at work, they block ebay so I can't check)

        Thanks :D

        • +2

Unfortunately the connection kit is not on eBay but both items are free shipping.

I'll see if we can add it by 6pm so you can get the 18% off that too.

Edit: regarding downsides - nothing noticeable - we have tested the kit extensively with all of our amps.

      • I had a look at the subwoofer connection kit with the provided link while at work and had planned to follow up more when at home. Now that I'm at home, the page that is linked to appears to be completely different? I'm sure there were 2 products (with/without speaker cables), but now the item has a variety of different DC connector sizes? I had planned to buy one of the original kits to use on my amplifier (DSE A2760), but the new item has me baffled with how to connect it?
Can you provide information on what has changed?

  • Would these be a good match to an LG g6 with the built in quad DAC? Would it be better to get the passive speakers?

    • You will need the Amplified A44's in that case, or use an amplifier/Tuner in between.

  • +1

I don't have any room for the Sub right now, but I'm so impressed with my B44's that I bought from the last deal that I'm tempted to just buy it and store it until I can find a spot for it.

    • It's a great investment ebosh as the sub pairs very well with the speakers. Voll have done a great job with the sub.

      • I snoozed, and I lost. I forgot that it expired at 10pm and logged in at 10:30 to buy them. Next time I suppose.

  • +3

I currently have a set of logitech z623s, would the A44 and S6 provide a much better experience?

    • Also curious with the same set of speakers

    • yes

    • +5

The Logitech z623 has impressive sound for the price, but the intended application may be different to what's these can do.

I would say that from a music perspective, you're much better using the volls. If you're after doof doof, the z623s will give you more of that.

I am the kind of person that appreciates accuracy and details over bass, which the b44s would come out ahead for me.

I have two b44s gen1 that I use as surrounds. I like them so much I want to have them as fronts too.

  • ChiefBodge: is it possible to buy new screens? If so, how much? My dog decided to chew on the corner of one of mine. It probably serves me right for not mounting them on the wall.

    • +13

What version of B44 do you have? V1 or V2?

We have some spare V1 grills which I'd be happy to send you for shipping price only but unfortunately they are not compatible with the V2s due to the magnets being opposite.

If you have the V2 we may have something but I'd have to have a look in the warehouse to see.

      • V2.

If you don't then you don't - and that's fine. I could buy the mesh and do it myself, but figured I'd ask since you were here.

  • +2

Would plugging a pair of A44's into my TV provide decent sound for an avarage sized room? Or am I better off getting a soundbar?

    • +5

It really depends on the soundbar you'd be comparing it to, some soundbars (generally the pricier ones) go quite low and might be a better choice if you aren't planing on having a sub.

I think the A44s would be absolutely fine in this scenario personally - and certainly a lot better than a similarly priced soundbar but for TV/movies soundbar or not you'd probably want a sub for the best sound.

If you're not quite sure you can always buy and then return free of charge under our 30 day money back guarantee if you decide that a soundbar is a better option for you.

  • Should I get the active or passive?

I don't currently have an amp. I don't particularly want a big receiver (would probably go a small Topping or similar) and would be using phones or DACs as a source.

Is the small amp in the actives good or should I get my own solution?

    Thank you!

    • +8

The integrated amplifier in the A44s is way better than any amp you'd find for the $32 price difference between them, quality wise it will be just as good as any other low to mid range class D amplifier - for the budget conscious it's certainly the best option.

The main thing is it's only about 2x20w so it can't go super loud (fine for a small to medium size room at moderate volumes). If you think you might want to go louder than looking at a more powerful SMSL/Topping amp + our B44 V2 would be the way to go, also if you want any features like multiple inputs, bluetooth, DAC, headphone amp etc.. then an amp is the way to go.

The other advantage of Passives is that if your amp blows down the track out of warranty you still have usable speakers, also if you decide you want to upgrade your speakers later on you still have an amp you can use.

      • +2

        Excellent response, thank you. :)

I think I'll go the passives as I know I'll want versatility moving forward.

Congrats on a great product (by all reports)!

      • wow excellent advice, I think this might persuade me to go the other way. I want dual input… Phone and PC what amp option should I be looking at for this functionality? I was thinking of achieving this via the A44's with Google Chromecast audio.

        • +3

The problem with the Chromecast Audio is that it's really only useful for music as there is a delay between when the audio is sent and when it's received - so it wouldn't be much use as a way to connect to a PC.

The ideal choice of amp really depends on your requirements. Would you like to connect your phone via bluetooth? If so the VX3 would be the best value option - you'd just need a 3.5mm to RCA to connect to your PC. The VX1 might also be a candidate but it doesn't have a huge amount of power so can't go very loud.

We also have the SMSL Q5 Pro / SMSL AD18 which also fit the bill and next week we'll have the new Topping MX3 (although you can buy it now from other ebay sellers) which is really great value and does pretty much everything you might want to do.

        • @chiefbodge: thanks!!! the VX3 looks to be the best option for me :D!

      • +1

Can the A44 be paired with a separate amp down the track? Not really in a position to buy an amp right now, but would be keen to get the most out of the speakers later on.

  • How would the A44's go as a stand alone set in a small computer room for gaming?

    • +1

thats what I'm buying the A44's for too.

    • +2

Perfect application. You won't be disappointed.

  • I'm trying to apply the code but its saying "Looks like that's the wrong code. Please double-check and try again."

how do i get this discount?

    • +3

The code is only active between 6pm-10pm AEST tonight.

Any experiences with these (B44) on cheap and nasty amps?
    e.g. Lepy from eBay/Aliexpress.

    • Not a bad match. Not terribly loud until you get distortion, but easily the best sound you'll get for under around $100 you can always upgrade later if you need more.

  • What would be the best way to connect to an optical out on the TV?

    • For the A44s you might want to try something like http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Coaxial-RCA-Digital-Optical-Tosli… although I haven't tested it personally - your TV must be able to output 2 channel PCM optical though (look in your manual or TVs menu). If the TV can't downsample dolby then any time a program with surround sound is played the sound wont work.

For the B44s I would just recommend buying an amp with optical input like the Topping VX2, SMSL Q5 Pro or SMSL AD18 (or the new Topping MX3 which we'll begin stocking next week) - these amps don't downsample dolby either so you'll still need to make sure your TV can output 2 channel audio, if your TV can't you will need a proper AV receiver

  • +6

For those that don't know, these are basically rebadged Micca MB42X, possibly the most recommended speaker ever.

  • +1

Hngggggg want so bad. I promised myself this morning I wouldn't buy anything else this month

  • +1

I see that the A44 frequency response is 60 Hz - 20kHz, but no mention of +/- how many dB… Assuming 3dB, that's a really good value speaker.

Very tempted to get a pair for my workshop…

    • +2

The A44 / B44 are very close to +3/-3db I believe. We are working on getting some nicer frequency response graphs done and publishing them along with the +3db/-3db frequency response.

  • OP is the frequency response of the sub measured at 6dB or 3dB down? I assume it's 6 but would like to be surprised.
    Thanks

    • +1

I haven't got the frequency response graph on me unfortunately but it's definitely not going to be near 3dB - on a 6.5" sub to achieve that you'd certainly need some kind of DSP or passive filter (we're actually investigating integrated DSPs for future products though).

  • +1

I have the Logitech Z906 (https://www.logitech.com/en-au/product/speaker-system-z906), which works with 5 passive speakers connected to an amplifier integrated into the subwoofer. The listed wattage of the passive Logitech speakers is 67W, do you think I'd have any luck getting a pair of B44s to use as front Left/Right speakers for this setup?

    • Should be all good! Forget about the power handling as the Volls will be fine, believe me :) The more important part is the impedance but it seems the Logitech Satellites are 4Ohms which is a perfect fit for the Volls as they too are 4Ohms so the Logitech Amp wont even know the difference. You'll probably be so impressed you may even end up replacing ALL the Logitech satellites with Volls :)

    • Should work fine and if it doesn't you can just send them back.

You might find that the B44 are quieter / louder as they will be more efficient or less efficient based on the design of the Logitech satellites - not sure if you could adjust this on the amp or on your source though.

      • That's good to hear, thank you both for responding! The amp allows adjusting the volume between Front Sides/Front Centre/Surrounds/Sub, so I'm fine on that front. The Logitech speakers have spring clip connectors to connect to bare speaker wire - are the B44s able to accept bare speaker wire, or would I need to use speaker wire with plug ends?

        • The B44s use standard multi-way screw-down speaker terminals allowing bare wire or banana plugs to be used so you wont have any dramas… but banana plugs do make it easier & 'nicer'.

        • Thanks, I did a bit of Googling and the connectors looked like 5-way Binding Posts but the connector type wasn't listed in the specs, so I wanted to make sure.

    • Keen to hear your feedback on the improvement that these speakers may make on the Z906.

I also have that system set up as my home theatre!

      • +2

I've got the speakers set up, and I'm glad to report that they work fine via the Z906 - their sensitivity is similar to the Z906 satellites so I didn't even need to adjust the volume balance.
My initial impressions are thus - for music, overall detail and clarity are much improved. The high-end specifically sounds a lot better - cymbal splashes and crashes are well-defined. As for the low-end, the Voll's are definitely much bassier than the Z906 satellites - I turned the subwoofer volume down by a couple notches to compensate.
Overall I'd say that if you only use the system for movies/games and you have no complaints with the sound there's no need to upgrade, but if you find the sound to be a bit muffled or you also listen to music the upgrade would make for a great improvement.

        • Thanks for the feedback!!!

    • i believe it would work but I would not recommend it. You need to check the ohms as well

      • According to the official spec sheet, the Logitech satellites are "335 watts RMS (5x 67 watts per channel {4 ohms at 3.85kHz, at 10% THD})".
I went and measured one of my satellites to make sure and got 4.3-4.4 ohms, so it looks like it'll work.

  • Hi Chief,

Currently have B44 and a VX1. It's a great little setup. They're connected to the back of my TV (headphone out - 3.5mm to RCA adapter) via the RCA out on the back of the speakers, and my Macbook via USB. I just use the amp to switch between TV / Computer audio, and it works great.

Can you think of any way I could add two speakers to this setup? (an extra L and an extra R)

    Cheers!

    • You could add them in a series to each channel but the VX1 unfortunately doesn't really have enough power to power 4 speakers. If you require it to go louder upgrading the amp will certainly enable you to get significantly more volume out of the B44s that you have - if this interests you shoot us an email and we might be able to do something for you.

  • +1

The code's not working for me!

    EDIT: gotta wait for 6pm!

    • i did the same :D its at 6pm - 10pm tonight.

  • Anyone know what speakers are good for replacing the satellite speakers on z5500s ?

  • +9

No no no, OP - you've gone the wrong way…you're meant to JACK the prices when eBay does a code!

    • lol.

    • +7

We actually did really well years ago when we dropped prices during an eBay sale, as a small company we find it's a great marketing opportunity.

I'm really surprised that more eBay sellers don't do it during this big sitewide sales. I would encourage sellers to drop their prices as much as they can and let eBay foot most of the bill :)

  • Wow, great prices! How would they compare to Kef iQ3 Bookshelf speakers? I've had the Kef's in storage for a few years now since the NAD amp i had powering them blew up, but i do still need to sort out a decent desktop speaker solution.

  • Op how do returns work. Do I pay for shipping myself and is there a drop point? What if I have already trialled them?

    • +2

We haven't done an eBay return in a while and I think it's changed since we last did it but you won't pay for the return shipping and we'll give you a full refund. It doesn't matter if it's been opened - we want you to test it for as long as you need to decide whether you want to keep them or not.

      Here's the info here: https://pages2.ebay.com.au/free-returns

  • I'm an audio noob, and was wondering: would these would be good along side a TV compared to a soundbar of a similar price?

    • +1

Too many variables sorry. Without actually testing both options out yourself and doing a proper A-B comparison there's really no way of answering this question I'm afraid…. and this is exactly how people make lotsa money! Welcome to the world of Hifi :)

      • +1

and this is exactly how people make lotsa money!

Couldn't agree more with this. As example of how subjective Hifi is you get things like this

When I see things like that I wonder if we're selling the right kind of product!

        • Yes, I don't see any Speaker Cable Lifters on your website. How are we supposed to get good sound without cable lifters? (rolls eyes)

  • i've got an audioengine d1 just sitting on my table. Is it strong enough to drive the passives or should i go for the active speakers

    • The D1 isn't a speaker amplifier so it wont work with the B44s - the A44s would be the best option but you could also get B44s+Amp.

  • Needs more black

  • Anyone has any opinions on how the a44 compare to a swan M10?
Am thinking of getting the passive set with the wirings but am still thinking about it.

  • To confirm is the S6 crossover set to 150hz, or is that the optimal frequency range for the speaker? Do you have any response charts for it?

    • The crossover is set to 150hz (it begins tapering off from about 120hz). I don't have a frequency graph available at the moment but the filter is set at a decent setting for matching with many 3-4" speakers although ideally to get the most out of it you'd use DSP to crossover.

  • My brother has a turntable and is looking for some speakers for it - would the A44 speakers be good for this? Or would he need some kind of amplifier too?

Considering getting the A44 speakers and S6 for my PC setup…

    • +1

It depends on how new his turnable it is - if it has an integrated preamp it will connect straight into the A44s without an issue (You can usually find this out in the manual or by looking at the back of the turnable and see if it: has a switch labeled line-out/phono it will work or if it simply has RCA without any kind of grounding post or wire it will work).

If it doesn't have line out and only has phono out then you'll need a preamp to sit in between the A44s and the turntable.

      • I know the model he has is an Audio Technica LP120. Google says that it does have an integrated preamp. It has "Switchable built-in pre-amplifier with line-level RCA output cables". So should be fine?

        • +1

Yep that will be fine, no preamp needed - just make sure the switch at the back is switched to "line level"

        • @chiefbodge:

Is there any issue with laying the A44's horizontally? Just looking at desk space and it may work better that way.

        • @Gumley:

As long as you lean your head to the side while listening, it should sound fine ;)

        • @Gumley:

          Laying horizontally is fine.

    • He would most likely need a pre-amp for the TT.
