For that price they're amazing.
I actually prefer these to my CX 2.00s. Admittedly the sound is better/clearer on the Senheissers, but these feel better, and it's a bit of a uphill slope trying to get excellent sound quality with in ears anyway. If I want better sound quality, I just use my ATH-M50s instead. If I just want some tunes while walking to work or cleaning the house, I go the Xiaomis.
These are better than the $20 Sony's you get at JB and on ebay, that is for sure.

The free Sonys that came with my phone are considerably better than the pistons, imo.
Maybe the ones that came with your phone costs more than $20
It's a tough call to make considering cheap Sony (or Panasonic) in-ears are incredible bang for buck.
Well you are introducing a few variables here, and "hype"??? You're on Ozbargains this isn't an Apple forum. I go through a pair of earbuds a year or so, so I generally try to source the cheapest as I know they wont last. I have bought several pairs of Sony's (don't have model number on me) from Jb Hi-fi and they are atrocious, as in piercing, tinny sounding. These buds for $3 I'm not saying are world beaters, but for that price, the sound quality per $ value is not even close.
For this price they're great. Comfortable and good sound quality.

How would you compare to earphones that come with e.g. an iPhone?
I don't have Iphone earphones but I do have the regular Samsung ones that comes with the phone. I personally prefer this one over that since it has a more thump in the base and decent in the mid tones.
Another good thing about this is it is tucked into the ear so I can use it while working out.

I bought a set of these a few months ago and i must say they aren't great. I'm definitely no audiophile but they don't sound any better than $5 woolies no-names to me. My main pair is a set of $30 Panasonic in-ears and they are light years better than these. I get the price difference but all accounts are that pistons are among the best < $50 in ear head phones. I just don't see it.

I've had a few headphones, Sennheiser CX300II, Momentum, Audiofly af45, af56, af78, Brainwavz m2, m3, Xiaomi Piston Hybrid Pro Fresh and the Hybrid IV's.
The Hybrid IV's are $26 on ebay at the moment and clearly much better or as good as all of the above imo.
These are really good, highly recommend.

This conflicts with my experience, they are comfortable but very average at best sound wise, muddy sound and very poor to non existent treble.
I have a set of VE Monk plus earbuds and the sound quality is in a different class, they are superb for little extra cost.

I bought the $29 xionmis from a past deal and there pretty decent but my $25 Sonys are more comfortable and i think sound a bit better too. Maybe too much xiomi hype
