Xiaomi ROIDMI 3S USB Bluetooth/FM Car Charger US $10.99 (~AU $13.78) @ GearBest

450

As soon as I found that I wanted a ROIDMI charger/transmitter cos my cars tape deck was broken to use the cheapie 3.5mm cassette method, conveniently all the deals around then had finished or I missed them.

In my quick check every few days I've found it's back on sale at Gearbest for ~$13.78. Looks like one of the cheapest prices for this item from a quick search!

Update: price increased to ~$15 even though the "sale" is still on

Don't buy this if you want clarity when playing your music file. I find the sound quality similar to listening to AM radio with lots of sound interference when traveling in the city traffic.

I read the ol' school cassette adapters were better than the transmitters in quality but sadly mine now just makes clicky noises as it turns the "tape" :(

    • +2

Do you have the ROIDMI 3S ? I read somewhere they improved the sound quality compared to the 2S …
I ordered one recently but haven't got it yet to say if they are any good. I will soon know.

It will be always a challenge to find an unused frequency.

    • +3

Sound quality is fine with mine. Maybe your car radio is a little old?

Try listening with another radio/FM tuner and see how you go. My audio was crystal clear.

Edit: I've actually got the older model (2s), maybe it's different. Mine's perfect though. Wouldn't even know it's FM.

      • +3

Used to have a 2s, gave it to my dad and "upgraded' to the 3. Now looking for a 2s sale as I found that sound quality is average in comparison and with the spring loaded metal things on the side it's too tight and has broken them so now have to fiddle to get it to connect. Anyways, I think stick to the 2s!

        • +1

when I found I missed all the 3s deals I did consider the 2s but wasn't keen on chancing if it'd fit in the car or not.
Ofcourse I didn't think the audio quality would go backwards either :S

    • In a CJ Lancer the default fm band it uses sounds louder and clearer than other fm stations. Perhaps it depends on thhow quality of your car aerial.

    • in one of my cars the quality wasn't too flash, it improved when I dropped the frequency to one of the lower channels.

  • Is there an ability to set the FM frequency. I had trouble tuning.

      • ah perfect. Danke :)

Stretchable iron pieces for better connection and not easy to cut off

What are these stretchable iron pieces and why do you want to cut them off?

    • -1

      Obviously referring to these.

  • Is this pretty much as good/bad as most FM Transmitters? EG Belkin? Mainly signal strength I'm concerned about.

    • +2

I think it's better than the belkin cheapies, but it really depends on your car's antenna placement.

My old Corolla 2011 Hatch has trouble picking the signal up when there is someome sitting in the passenger side of the car — once the blockage is cleared the sound clarity greatly improves. Turns out human bodies block radio signals very well.

Don’t buy it. I have 3s but sound clarity isn’t too great.

    • +7

      Not a reason to neg.

Time to buy a new car :)

I have one of these in my 2007 vehicle.

I was 17 with red P's at the time and naturally felt the urge to be hooligans with my friends.

I played extremely obnoxious and loud music through the roidmi on the streets at nights with the boys.
All of my friends driving could all connect to the pseudo - radio station it produces, from at least 400m away.
So I've had extremely good experiences with it. The only things to be aware of are:
    1. You need to find a good frequency that isn't too close to a radio station that already exists in your area
    2. The higher the volume is through the PHONE, the worser the sound quality becomes. But this is very marginal.

    My twocents :)

    • +2

I am 17 with red P's right now and do the exact same things

  • Can you use this with Spotify or only music files on the phone? Seems like you can only play music through their proprietary app (with support for some chinese music platforms).

    • +1

Yup, sure can. You aren’t limited to using the app.

      • Oh sweet thanks.

    • +1

Anything audio will play through it, music files, phone calls, streaming music, navigation directions, etc ….

The app is required to set an alternative FM frequency, change the LED light colour, check the battery voltage, and track what you do (block it's permissions). It can do a couple of other things but those are the basics.

It's not required, you can connect to it as a normal BT hands free device, default radio frequency is 96.4MHz IIRC.

      I predict:
Roidmi 4S - Brings back the mic and slightly improved sound.
Roidmi 5S - Mic is gone but it now can do QC 2.0
Roidmi 6S - Mic is back, it can do QC 2.0, and the sound is slightly improved again.
Roidmi 7S - Mic is gone but it now does QC 3.0 and has a USB-C output.
Roidmi 8S - Mic is back, QC 3.0, USB-C, sound slightly meh over previous version but it can heat your coffee.

      • So if a call comes in, it routes the sound via FM but you use your phone mic to speak? Im just wondering how it will work together with a handfree kit already in my car.

        • +1

          That's right.

Not sure it's going to work with what is essentially two hands-free kits connected. Haven't tried to connect two hands-free at once.

        • Why would you connect to this if you already have a (presumably Bluetooth) hands free built in to your car? Can't you play music via that?

        • @Jackson: not all of them like my 07 rav4 has bluetooth but doesn't support music only phone calls

        • @nobby148: fair enough, Bluetooth issues and music support not withstanding, you wouldn't do this otherwise, although I have my own strange scenario that I posted below

        • @Jackson:

Mine doesnt play music that is why im looking at ROIDMI, but ROIDMI 3S doesnt have a mic. What a dilemma.

        • +1

@KaTst3R: didn't realise anyone made a BT car kit that didn't support music streaming. That's pretty lazy considering that the BT audio profile is as old as the hills

      • The app is required to set an alternative FM frequency, change the LED light colour, check the battery voltage, and track what you do (block it's permissions). It can do a couple of other things but those are the basics.

Can you install the app, set the frequency, then uninstall it? And any of that China tracking crap goes with it even if you say gave it permissions while installed?

        • Yes, I have a 1S, 2S, and now the 3S - I use the app to set the frequency, (88.2 in my case), change the LED to blue (default green is a little distracting at night), then backup it up using TitaniumBackup and uninstall it.

I did find though, (when I was using the 2S), that when it connected via the app it seemed to add a little more loudness boost to the audio compared to when it was a straight BT connection.

If you want to use the app just disable its permissions except BT, it'll moan about can't get location, can't get network but it'll still work.

BTW, if anyone wants a 2S PM me, I have a spare.

        • @4wd: Wouldn't you want to keep your 2s incase you like the audio quality better :P
          (going off the comments)

        • @dufflover:

I have two, hence the 'spare' reference :)
(Still sealed in the box, unused.)

And I've found the 3S is subjectively the same audio-wise.

Also got a 1S if anyone wants that, (if I can find it) :D

I use the 3s in my mkv vwgolf on channel 96 in Melbourne with Android auto and a magnetic phone holder. I play tune in radio or Spotify and its brilliant. Sounds as good as mp3 through our other new car. For $15 can't go wrong. Apart from the chime it makes when connecting.

    • Quick questions here.
Can I answer a call using the 3s or I should buy the 2s if I want to use it as hands-free device?

  • I am waiting for a special deal on Xiaomi ROIDMI 2S…

  • I am currently using a 2s and it's great, however to save me having to put my phone in and out of a holder all the time I was thinking of getting a dedicated phone and mounting it in the car for navigation and music. The issue with that is when a call came in it wouldn't automatically cut the music and play my call unless it supports 2 phones at once. Does anyone know if it does, or if not is there any other solution someone can think of? The only one I can think of so far is to get an Android deck and install that instead, but it would cost a bit an require more work.

    • Why would you need another phone for navigation AND music?

Just get one for navigation, it doesn't need to be connected to the Roidmi.

Your normal phone can stay in your pocket and connect for music and calls. Set the app to answer when the phone shakes and then hit your pocket when a call comes in.

Or have it auto-answer and hit your pocket to change tracks.

      • +1

Simply because it's more convenient to control the music from the dash, and it means that my battery om my phone isn't drained so it doesn't need to be plugged in. The plan is to have a relative equivalent of what would be in a new vehicle in my old one without going to the expense of purchasing an Android head unit.

  • Thanks for this. Ordered a couple for a 2007 Astra + 1992 BMW 740 both with OE radios neither equipped with either blue teeth or easily accessible front mounted AUX inputs. Anybody know what the LED colour options are? I would like ideally an amber/red shade to match instruments designed to not cause nightblindness while driving. The blue/green colours will look hideous.

  • Purchased. Thanks OP

Hopefully it gets here in time for my holiday!

  • Thank you OP. I grabbed one.
