    +1 for visiting your grandma

"freemoneyhunter, why aren't you talking to me? Is something wrong?"

"Hold up g'ma, just need to submit this sick deal onto ozbargain"

      • +2

Actually I signed her up to the deal while I was there, $100 bonus for….her. :)

  • Which nursing home?

    • +1

The one next to Panthers at Penrith

  • Is this for new customers only?

    • +4

What do you mean, it says the offer period is between 1st Oct and 31st Dec.

    • +4

Yeah thanks for letting us know!!!

  • +1

I don't have a landline number at home or at work, how do I appyly for this?

  • +1

It's new. Last month new applicants only get 20000 flybuys points for the black card with $99 annual fee. Targeted offer was 30000 flybuys points for the same black card.

  • $50 to grandma's day out fund on the next visit

    • +1

She is pretty much chair ridden, has been in palliative care for last 6 months. We used to take her out to the coffee club near there when we visited.

  • +7

Ironically my grandma often includes unnecessary details in her stories as well ;)

    • +29

One trick is to tell 'em stories that don't go anywhere - like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Give me five bees for a quarter," you'd say.

Now where were we? Oh yeah: the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time…

      • That's mean, it's the old folks job to do that :)

  • +3

1 point for every $2 spend is about 0.25% return. If you usually spend more than $13200 a year on your credit card you'll actually be better off getting the Coles Rewards Mastercard with the $99 annual fee.

    • +2

Yeah but this card is free so you'd just use it for the freebie stuff and cancel (if you don't use Coles Online for the free delivery).

    • +10

Apply for the free card, once it is approved, ask to be upgraded to the rewards card free for the first year.

When the year is up, downgrade to the fee free card again. Then when the deal is available again, ask to be upgraded again and waive the first year.

      It is what I did.

Ensure you are getting Merchandise Protection. It is the best part of the card and easily beats all other cards in this regard.

      • +1

I second this. 100% get the “account cover plus” 2 years price protection means I just got a $220 refund on the iPhone 7+ I bought last year on launch day. Every year Apple drops the price of last years model so it’s free money :)

        • Nice work. I guess that's the upside of an iphone, they still sell them two years on. 😉 The usual electronics I buy are not stocked after a year but I've still made some worthy claims with price protection.

The best I've done with the Coles card is when I claimed for a cracked screen on a $350 Samsung Tab. Repair quote was over $500. Coles insurer reimbursed me $350 with no fuss. I never did get the repair done. The Tab still works fine to this day.

        • how did you get $220 off?

        • +1

@ozzyoi: I paid full price at Apple store on launch day. 1 year later Apple dropped the price (like they do every year) and I claimed the $220 difference

      • does this card have that?

        • Yep, just ask for it. It doesn't cost anything if you pay off your credit card by statement date.

          https://financialservices.coles.com.au/credit-cards/about-ou…

        • @OldBugger: 1% of closing balance capped at 50, so pay your balance in full and get free insurance?

        • @Wilburre: correct. Just ensure you know when the statement date is. I've been caught quite a few times especially when a debit was made a day before.

        • @OldBugger: I always thought that you still paid the 1% (up to $50) because the balance still ‘closes’ at the end of the billing period, even if that balance is paid in full. Are you saying if the balance is paid in full every month, the insurance is free? Are you sure it’s not hidden in the transactions listing somewhere as a debit?

        • @Stix: yes, no premium is payable if paid in full. See page 7: https://financialservices.coles.com.au/~/media/financial-ser…

        • +1

@OldBugger: Ah gotcha - so the balance has to be zero WHEN the statement is produced, not before a payment is due.

        • +1

          @Stix: That's it

        • @OldBugger:
Ok but that also means that you lose the 1 month interest free period between when the statement is issued and when it is due.
But that is only a small saving of say $6.40 on a monthly spend of $3k compared to $30 by paying off early.
I recently got the black card after giving westpac altitude the flick after 20+ years.
          Thanks for pointing this out.

        • @Filbert: I didn't get this. So for example, I spend $1k on the card on 1/10. The statement/cycle is meant to close on the 28/10. By the 27/10, I need to clear the $1k in full? Rather than, wait for it to be generated, & use the full 62 days to not make any payments? How much is the premium?

        • @John Kimble: Thank you, I did read that. So if the statement gets generated for $1k, then I pay $10 (1%) of the statement as the premium. Hmmm. So I don't get the 62 day interest-free, rather a 28 day? That's a bit of a hassle, how do you manage it @oldbugger?

        • @lordra: what do you mean? He just pays it early.

        • @John Kimble: Gotcha, he has to pay it BEFORE the statement cycle ends & his statement is generated so no 62 days free interest.

      • Do you think they will still upgrade me free for a year if you had this card for more than a year?

        • I was on the fee free for quite a while, possibly a year. I was on the rewards before that. Then a similar deal was advertised and I asked to be placed on it. They didn't give me the $100 voucher but they did upgrade me and waived the first year.

        • @OldBugger: cool will try that, also does your account no stays the same? For price protection

        • @lufee: yes all the same. You can even use the same card although they send you out a new one, you don't have to use it.

      • Good idea.
But is it in the T&C that an upgrade to the 99$ annual fee card will be provided with the firts year fee waived?
Or is it something you managed to get by talking to coles.

And also, is bpay and direct debit is the only way to pay the card? Can it be paid at coles Counter?

      • I tried that. They said they’ll charge the annual fee upon first purchase after upgrade. It used to work before.

        • Bugger. The last time I tried it was only earlier this year.

        • how hard did you try?

        • @drose01: A few days prior to the fee was due, I rang up and said I don't want to pay the annual fee. They offered the no annual fee card which I said no, could you please waive the fee instead? They didn't budge so I said I'm considering cancelling. Still didn't budge, and I was like okay, get me onto the no annual fee card for now… :/

So I got onto the no annual fee card, then rang them back and said, I'd like to upgrade to the rewards card. they were like sure, but the fee will be charged at the first purchase and subsequent anniversaries. And I was like eh… nevermind.

      • why did they waive the first year fee? did you do this over the phone?

    • $13,200pa = >$250pw. That’s not me.

      • +1

Pay everything on credit card (where available without surcharges) and pay it off in full each month?

    • +1

Exactly. @ 2 flybuys points per $1 works out to be something like 1% cashback if you put all your expenses through it. Works for us
Well its not cash, but flybuys = coles/kmart dollars, which is basically cash if you have a family lol

  • -3

is that the ad with 4 stupid guys in it..did the same earlier in the year..it's nothing new..do a search

  • Well that's next week's groceries sorted.

  • +3

Might be off-topic, but I signed up for this exact promotion in about June this year. However, after I followed all the prerequisites of having to make a purchase and such, I have not yet received my $100 giftcard yet. I called them about it two months ago and told them about my issue, and apparently they 'escalated' it, but I have not heard anything since. What actions can I take? The only reason I signed up was because of this promotion.

    Cheers!

    • +1

Same thing happened to me few years ago, for $50. Few phone calls but nothing happened.

    • What gift card?

      • I meant the "$100 of a single coles supermarket shop".

    • +1

Don't rely on their 'escalations'. I've had limited luck with these with Coles. Try the Financial Services Ombudsman. Whether you use this as leverage or actually file a dispute is up to you.

      • Thanks for the advice. I will give them a call on Monday.

    • read this,

New customers who apply and are approved for a Coles Credit Card between Sunday 1st October and Sunday 31st December 2017 and make a purchase (excludes cash advances and cash equivalents) within the first 30 days of the card approval date will receive $100 off a single Coles Supermarket shop. $100 off will be activated on your flybuys account and available for use within 2 weeks of your first eligible purchase. $100 off will only be activated on the flybuys card quoted in the application process. Excludes Coles Express and Coles online.

    • -4

That's off topic. Go to A current affair.

    • According to KMeister, you've probably already 'spent' this the first time you shopped at coles.

  • -4

Not a great deal. Why would anyone want to do their groceries at coles. Much better value at Aldi.

  • +1

    +1'ed for visiting grandma

  • Pretty high interest rate. 62 days interest free as long as you pay it off every month.

The Story of John Smith by Lucky13.

John can attribute the beginning of his financial problems to the day he got that credit card…

    • +1

Outrageously high interest rate considering the record low rates over the last few years. Just never use a credit card for credit.

  • Silly question - but do you get free travel insurance with this card?
If not, what would be the cheapest CC with free travel insurance?
I have not been O/S for 5 years and desperately want to plan a cheap holiday, hopefully with free insurance.
I won't be doing anything radical or dangerous so just need basic cover.
    Cheers.

    • +1

      No it does not

Try Amex platinum edge which does but annual fee

  • Agreed the optional price protection is definitely worth it. Could only be bettered if it allowed protection from anyone’s price, not just the place you purchased from. Anyone know of any cards that do that?

You also get a higher flybuys point rate with their better cards which can cover the annual fee.

I do find their service is terrible. I had to replace my card due to fraudulent transactions and it took 4 promises and 3.5 months for them to get the new card to me after they had cancelled the existing card.

  • +9

Love this card for the 'account cover plus - Price protection'.
Last month I claimed $450 as Price protection refund for iPhone 6S that I bought two years ago using this card.

And yes I always pay the balance before the statement gets generated to avoid 1% premium for the account cover plus insurance. So basically it's a free insurance.

    • This maybe better than the $100 deal. Computer parts almost always drop in price within two years.

      • Yeah $100 is sweet little add on bonus :)

  • "Included Free delivery at Coles online using your Coles Credit Card" - This wins me over! Unless there is a minimum order value..

    • +1

"Receive free delivery each time you spend $100 or more" - So I'm gonna give this a pass.

    • $100

  • -1

What's the cancellation process on this one?

    • Involves beer pong. WTF?

    • +1

Ring the ph number on the back of the card, or the phone number from Coles financial online

      • Thanks. No cancellation fees?

        • Nope, none

        • @kickling:
Nice, so no catch; why wouldn't everyone jump to this bandwagon? pretty much $100 free hit on Coles grocery

        • @tempura: I dunno. Great deal to me because I do shop at Coles. Basically free $100 cash in my books.

  • Just wondering, I actually had this card last year and only cancelled it a few weeks ago. I'm assuming I am not a new customer as of now, i.e. You can only ever be a new customer once?

    • Check the T+Cs?

Eg the CBA $250 cash back was for new cardholders, they defined as not having one in the last 12 months.

Offer excludes all existing cards, switches from other card types and is not available to customers who currently hold, or have held, any of the above card types in the 12 months prior to 1 May 2017.

      https://www.commbank.com.au/personal/credit-cards/250-cash-b…

      • Yeah, I can't find it or must be blind… might enquire directly

    • +1

Answering my own question for the benefit of everyone… the hotline customer service say that yes, as long as you don't hold a Coles card then you are a new customer. No matter if you had one and already cancelled. And yes, you'll be eligible for any current promotion.

      • So It means I can cancel my card today and then apply for a new one tomorrow to get the offer?

        • That's the feedback i got from them, and yes I double checked to make sure they didn't mean anything else.

I'll be applying for one soon.

  • +1

    Just been approved.

A nice saving on delivery too.

    Thanks, OP!

  • +1

Heya Folks, this deal is very interesting but what's the catch? Is there any cancellation fee in cancelling the credit card after purchase (and of course after paying it off) ?

    • No cancellation fee

    • Never heard of a credit card that has a cancellation fee. Can you name some?

  • And I assume by New Customer, everything must be New as in you must not own FlyBuys in the past?

  • Is there balance or purchase offer for this card? I seem to remember that it did last time.

  • -2

    Any Promotion codes for this?

  • So it is 62 days interest free does this mean that I don't have to repay anything for 62 days Interest free?

    • The ‘up to’ 62 days interest free is really only for something purchased on the first day of the statement cycle.
i.e. Purchase on 1/9 cycle finishes on 30/9, statement for this period due to be paid on 31/10.
So a better description is from 28 to 62 days interest free. But the marketing dept probably canned that and went for up to 62 days interest free.
