  • is it useful for iphone users?
Does it have any limitation for iphone?
and also for apply music as well?
    Thanks heap :)

    • wait for homepod.

      • +8

        homepod is expensive for me.
if i buy homepod, i wont have money for new iphone.

    • +1
      Keen to know this too

    • +1

I got it because it’s much cheaper and I don’t need it as a music device.
She understands me better than Siri, though iOS11 Siri seems a big improvement. The main/only limitation is that it doesn’t link to Apple Music so you will need to setup another option if you want to listen to music. I’m disappointed with the muffled and unnecessarily bassy sound, I find it’s hard to understand her without turning it up quite loud. Also mine is stuck in Fahrenheit no matter what I do with the settings. I have to ask for the “weather in Celsius” each time.
      Overall 5/10.

      • hey @LoopyLou
        one more question
Can I command it to play podcast app?
        thanks :)

        • +2

If you mean to initiate an app on your iPhone then that is almost certainly not possible.
Whether something equivalent exists in the Google ecosystem - we need someone else to answer that.

        • You can't launch an app on your iPhone, but Google Home can play podcasts. You just tell it to play "name of podcast" and it will start playing (that's what I do). You do have to link your Google Home to an service which supports podcasts though. The only problem with podcasts for me is I usually listen to my podcasts at 1.5 to 2X speed, but I can't seem to get Goggle Home to play at 2X speed

        • @changa: podracing?

      • You can use it as a bluetooth speaker with your apple devices and still have apple music.
For Fahrenheit to celsius you dont need to change any settings: just say " Ok/ Hey google change my temperature settings to Celsius" Taadaaa….

I like it for music and videos. I presently enjoying the complimentary 6 months free Youtube Red which also gives access to google music and youtube music. And the integration with chromecast is fantastic. Just say a song and play it on TV/ chromecast device. Can create even own playlist.
        What isnt to like!!!!!!

        • +1

Ok/ Hey google change my temperature settings to Celsius

Nope, no cigar. Tried asking several different ways and I just get “sorry I don’t know how to help with that”.

Wondering if mine has a different firmware fixed to the US or something.

        • +2

          @LoopyLou:
          Try this

          1.  Launch the Google Home App.
          2.  Tap the Menu icon at the top Left (3 horizontal lines)
          3.  Tap "… More settings"
          4.  Tap "My Day"
          5.  Tap the Gear Icon to the right of Weather.

You have the options for Celsius or Fahrenheit :)  I hope this fixes your issue :)

        • @Bippz01:

Yep tried that it doesn’t help!

Also cute fact, those three lines are called a hamburger.

        • @LoopyLou: You could try contact their live chat (or other forms of support) here https://support.google.com/googlehome/?hl=en#topic=7029677&c…

The last time I tried them they were quite helpful, you might have some luck there.

        • +1

@Bippz01: as per above, do steps 1 to 3 but instead of going to "My Day", go to "preferences" then "weather" then change it to Celsius and see if that helps.

        • A hamburger. Thanks, I learnt something today and I’m going to use that from now on!

      • Did you set it up via Google Home? I purchase this deal from Shopmonk last time it was on and I use an iPhone too. All the settings are based off your Google account. Mine just automatically detected region, language, time etc without having to do anything. Perhaps check your Google settings, you may be set to a region other than Australia.

      • Use them both but both Google Home and Amazon Echo are crap, not 100% design for Australian market.
Each has its own advantage, but lack in other. Don't waste your money on them, maybe good in 2 years time.

    • +7

Mate I use it and have an iPhone.
You can play podcasts through it without an iPhone without issues (doesn’t need the phone to play them)
You’ll need the google home app, google photos app & google Assistant app.
For home automation I’d suggest using IFTTT app also.
Takes a bit to get your head around it at first!
PM me if you get one and need help (I’ll try to answer during the day as I can)
I purchased mine through shopmonk and have seen zero limitations or issues either with the unit or the company, well, other than standard slow overseas shipping times.
      Best of luck

        Thanks heap @ozy

      • does this work with the xiaomi products? i have the homekit and xiaofang cameras and yee lights

        • Nope.
          Only works with Yeelights

        • Yeah I believe you have to change to Xiaomi app location for either the yeelights or camera to work..
Saying that I have seen workarounds online but as I don’t use either products I’m not 100% on it.
I use LIFX and don’t have a need for the camera, but will probably buy one if TA can post a crazy deal on it that results in an impulse buy lol

        • @ozy: yep need to set app to Singapore servers instead of Mainland China (do this first before set up or you'll have to start again)

        • +1

@lachlanww: yep set it to Singapore and it works great with yeelights. I have a heap of them around the house now.

    • Doesn't matter what phone you have, this interacts with your voice, as long as you have google account. Useful if you have some smart gadgets at home and google music or youtube subscription. There might be more functionalities for Android users but not sure about that.

Obviously bear in mind that the mini is due out soon (<$79) and the full fat version might well fall in price to meet the new Echo price. And of course, Amazon will launch here soon, and will probably bring their devices on discount.

    • how much is the new echo? does this model have more features over the mini?

      • New Echo is $99 in the US, so will probably be more here. However Amazon have a habit of doing regular deals (eg Dot down from $50 to $30) and my guess is they will do launch offers here.

The mini is just this without the speaker on the bottom (still has small one). Unfortunately it also doesn't have a 3.5mm jack (which the Dot has).

Depends what you want them for. For automation the dot is probably best. For music then maybe something more beafy.

        • hmm will probably get a dot then

    • The mini is only good in small rooms, doesn't sound anywhere near as good with music.

  • I'd like to know what's the difference between the normal and the mini. I got the normal right now but looking for a few more

    • +2

      Just the speaker size.

      • Is that mean 'worse' sound?

        • Probably worse for music but better for her voice - refer my post above.

        • @LoopyLou: reviews have said they in larger rooms the mini can't get very low and is hard to hear.

    • Sound quality.
Also there is a bigger version coming out too.
(A take on the Apple HomePod quality due to size)

    • Its tiny but supports chromecast

These are great, got one a few months ago. You forget it's there for like two weeks at a time. Then when I remember it's there I say to it, Hey Google, what's my name? And it says, "Your name is Master". And then I say, and don't you forget it.

    • +1

Ivanka, you can be my master any day…

  • Does this have an AU plug?

    • +1

No it’s a combined transformer and plug, with US style plug.

      • +1

lots of deals around , how long until we start getting cheap ones with an AU pack, hate these travel adapters .

    fad…

will be replace by something better soon
    or… just use your phone..

how cool was google glass eh…

    • +6

Thought the same, tried it, love it!
I use it for home automation control and it’s great!

  • Surprisingly, Google Home Max is more expensive than HomePod. US$399.99 vs US$350.

  • I bought one about 2 months ago. It is indeed a great little gadget to have in the living room or bedroom. However, One thing that needs to be mentioned CLEARLY though is that the power adaptor/plug is for Singapore, it is not the same as Australian power adaptor/plug.

    • And for anyone that does not know, the Singapore plug is the same as the UK plug.

    • +10

How do you rate its performance in the bedroom?

      • It can pick up sound anywhere in the bedroom and It understands Australian accent as well, which is a bonus. So performance wise I say above my expectation 9/10.

        • +2

I wonder how it rate your performance..

          @jominix:

I don't know what do yoi think? Why ask when you can try it for yourself?

          @huntingforbargain:
I tried and used a live concert music as a background. It worked well as I got applauded every 3 minutes.

    • +1

Weird mine was a US plug. Are you confused?

      • Mine was US plug too

        • Strange, lucky dip I guess. Either way an external power adaptor is needed for the device to work in Australia.

        • +2

          @huntingforbargain:
You mean a plug adapter? You only need a plug adapter.

Can Google Home be used for different accounts? E.g. say my partner and I want to use this, and I say "Put Eneloop in shopping list", will it know to put it in my shopping list not my partner's based on my voice?

Talking about shopping list, is it customisable what app this 'shopping list' is going to end up or just Google apps only (in this case Google Keep ?)?

Looking to get one, but probably get the Mini as it's cheaper and from what I know, it does everything the standard version does except crappier speaker (maybe)

    • +2

Can voice train for 6 different accounts
Picks your voice and puts your atuff in your shopping list.
I add things to shopping list all week and then while shopping just open the home app and find the shopping list and keep ticking things off as I keep buying them.

    • Google home will pretty much do everything you can do with your phone. Only thing I dont think you can create calendar or reminders on home but on phone you cant use google cast via voice command.

      edit: more detail… https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/11/google-home-review-a…

Does this thing do anything or is it just an expensive paper weight that is a little less expensive that it used to be?

    • Google it and see what it can do.
I use it for home automation via voice control.
When I come home at night my lights turn on, I tell it to turn the tv on to ABC kids for my daughter and then in the mornings I use it to tell me news, events in my day and weather while I’m having a shower.
Pretty sweet really and grows better every week when I think of something else I can have it do.

A lot of USA features we can’t get yet but I can’t wait to have my shopping list fill and auto order my food for delivery from woollies/Coles when it reaches my requirements as it does in the USA

      • How are you controlling the TV with it?

        • It works with Chromecast.

        • +1

I use a Logitech Harmony hub

        • Will drive Sony Android TVs (without a Chromecast dongle) too. I use mine with a Bravia and it's great for filtering and displaying photos from your Google Photos backup….

    • +2

depends how long ago you tried it.

They seem to add new functionality every few weeks.
I ususally keep an eye on Reddit where they get announced/discovered
      https://www.reddit.com/r/googlehome/

    • +8

And yes it’s also a great overpriced paperweight too!
I have it on top of 3 pieces of A4 right now and that paper ain’t going anywhere!

  • I don't know why they couldn't just incorporate this into google wifi

  • I also didn’t know this until after I got one but you can build a google home using a raspberry Pi FYI

Tempted to build one to cut out the “ok google/hey google command”
But I’m sure one day they’ll can that due to the masses not liking the branding control

    • +1

I've thought of doing this as well, but a Pi 3 costs ~$60AU plus enclosure, PSU, memory card, you're closer to $80 AU might as well spend the extra & just buy a Home. Of course if you like RPi & fiddling with electronics go for it.

      • Agreed, more so for the getting rid of “ok google, hey google” commands to activate it taking a command

        • What would be the benefit of that. The point of those is to tell the system that what your saying is to it

        • +1

@asa79: i’d like to call mine slave.
“Slave, open the garage and turn on the garden lights”

        • For the Pi based one don't you need to press a button instead so it knows to listen for a command?

        • @whatisk: Not from what I read but again I dont have it and would only be guessing.

        • +1

@ozy: Ah okay. Could have just been the kits I've seen. Haven't done a whole lot of research into it.

  • -1

does it make my sonos and bose redundant, if i buy one?

    • Yes especially if you add a couple of Chromecast audio for seperate music zones around the house…

    • Wait for the max version if you want a better quality sound, but much more expensive.

    • Sonos one has been announced , google it

  • +3

I’m waiting for the NSA’s version, cuts out the middleman…

ok google lah - better come with the singaporean accent
