Sanitarium Vegie Delights 50% off at Coles (Not Burgers, Chik'n Style Tenders, Smokey BBQ Burger etc.)

950

Just noticed they had not burgers and some others half off at Coles. Not sure if this is the best way to link it. It's in the catalogue but it only shows not burgers when there are a bunch of others also. Good for your meat free days or vegos.

    awesome.

  • Which ones are recommended? Dont these still have a high level of fat in them?

    • +1

They probly do have oil, yes.

Not necessarily high in fat but not really health foods either. I like the not burgers and hot dogs. All Veggie Delights in the new packaging are now vegan (some used to have chicken's ova).

      • All vegan? Really? :)

        • +1

According to the website I posted above, that's not true.

The first one I looked at, Cajun Snitty, contains egg. :(

        • +6

All those in new packaging. And some in old packaging. They've finally realised there's no need for animal products and are updating - like Quorn have recently too. Check to be sure. (They're not a vegan company - I think may contain traces if you have purity or allergy concerns.)

        • Right.. The pics on their website are all the old packaging, so maybe they haven't bothered to update their own website yet.

        • +1

@chudson: Theyve confirmed theyre now 100% vegan :) but stores may still have leftovers from their vegetarian products, which is probably why theyre having the sale… make way for new stock.

I can't see bacon eaters, liking these.. :)

      • +2

I like both. I probably wouldn't wrap this in bacon though.

Do people like the fake meat types? I have some vegan and vego friends, so I've tried some with them before but everything so far has been rank.

    • +6

As a vegan, I personally prefer some of the Quorn vegan (meat sub) products.

      • +3

Quorn is by far my favorite meat substitute or meat like snack (e.g. Chicken style pasty).

Some of the Sanitarium products are much better than the other supermarket products e.g. Ignoring Quorn, I much prefer Sanitation not burgers over most of the Fry's products.

      • If you want something special try this:

        https://www.crueltyfreeshop.com.au/products/creaturelesscomf…

Handmade so expensive, but really nice without being too similar to or reminiscent of actual flesh.

      • Quorn is the only fake meat I've found at all enticing too. You're generally better off not trying to replicate a meat meal but good if you're having a bbq or something.

    • +4

The Quorn mince makes a nice chilli/spag bol. I think they have their place, everything I have tried has tasted good so I always stock up at half price.

      • +3

Hey thanks for the spag bol suggestion, some family members are veg so I can just use Quorn, cheers! =)

    • They can be hit and miss, some quorn are good but others not for me. I reckon not burgers are pretty good. With some of these products you have to make sure not to overcook, they taste better that way.

    • As a recently turned vegetarian again.. imho nothing beats real meat it's just so good.. but if you want to feel a bit healthy and maybe body conscious there are some vegetarian sausages that don't taste bad but they definitely taste different.. unfortunately I can't remember the brand right now which is funny because I am predominantly vegetarian right now for the most part but haven't touched the awesome sausages in years mainly because they are a bit expensive.

I think they are sanitarium but plain no bells or whistles.. but the old formula could have been phased out by now with the new product range and packaging.

Fry's brand are my favourite, the schiztnels are pretty tasty.

    • +1

I find it's difficult to actually replicate a meat taste (other than maybe chicken).
The best meat replacement products tend to be those that are crumbed or in some sauce. After a while I realised that a lot of my favourite meat dishes are more about the herbs and spices and coatings then the meat itself.

    • It depends where you go.
I've been to some asian vegan restaurants who have had some amazing fake meats. I've eaten fake duck that tasted better than real duck.
However most of the stuff I've tried from stores have been foul. The sausages this page links to for example, I found absolutely disgusting.

So if you know what you're doing you can probably make some great mock meats but the supermarket offerings so far, not so great..

  • WTF is with all the serving sizes? 2 pack of hotdogs - serves 3. I thought they banned that kind of rubbish labelling?

Anyway, good idea for me, trying to massively cut down the amount of meat I eat (not overly fat, just I never go a day without red meat) so I'll give them a try.

You get 6 snags in a pack.

Hmmm true vegetarian will just take a plant and eat it raw… None of this veggies made to taste like meat stuff….. Lolll #joking!!

    • Raw hops are far more authentic /s

    • r/fellowkids with that hashtag usage

  • Anyone know the nutritional content of the new crumbed schnitzel?

Can’t help but comment that on now numerious occasions working at Coles have had customers attempt to return items like these because they didn’t realise they weren’t “real meat”….

    • +4

      wow / facepalm :)

    • +2

Lol sometimes I wish I worked at Coles or woollies instead of an office just so I could see the worst of society haha

    • Lol did they return it opened and already eaten or still in "good" condition.

Love that new range is all vegan. About time!

  • I was just thinking about these. What ever happened to the Tender Pieces in a can? I havent seem them for years!

    • Think they still have all the cans..

  • +1

I thought it was vagie delights for a moment.

  • Can't comment as I haven't tried these, but will soon.

Something I have tried, and can recommend is the Good Meal Co. Cottage Pie.

Best commercial frozen pie I've tried, with two caveats. 1. Buy on special as it's not cheap. 2. Don't just microwave it or you won't get the nice browning. Unless you have a fancy grilling microwave, in which case carry on.
