  • "8GB DDR4 RAM and 1TB HDD"
    1. user upgrade-able?
    2. that HDD must be SSD i think? the case is so thin

    • +6

No way 1TB SSD at that price.

    • Lolno, .8 inches is pretty damn fat

Never seen a HDD soldered, so I'd say 99% safe to easily upgrade

      • oh i c

there is a dot . in front of 8 inches.

          @tgame:

there is a dot . in front of 8 inches

Don't tell him that, he's just realised that he went from well above average to well below average. Of course the women knew this already.

    • It is HDD. I could not find anything about the upgradeable RAM.

      • +1

I think you have to open up the whole laptop to find the hard disk.

    • .8 of an inch isn't that thin, around 21 mm

  • Few questions.
    When is the release date?
Does it come with an American or Australian plug?
How long does it take to arrive?
And how good are the 8th gen processors over 7th gen?

    Hard Drive Interface

    Hard Drive Rotational Speed
    5400 RPM

      low price comes with catches

      • +1

slow rpm for the hard drive is to save power rather than reduce costs.

  • Anyone know what the trackpad will be like? Is it any good?

  • Look like great specs for the price - only the HDD needs an upgrade (ideally there's an M.2 slot, so you could just transfer the OS to an SSD and keep the HDD for storage)

It's a great machine for the price, given the large screen, low weight, and that the new i5's are quad-core. But Amazon does not know when they will get these, and Asus does not even have them on their website. It could be days, weeks, months…. Not sure whether a pre-order could be cancelled.
Without being able to see more specs on the website (e.g. will it support 4k HDMI? Any additional hard drive or SSD slots?) it's a bit of a gamble.

    • It does say this under additional information

Date First Available October 9, 2017

      • that's when it was published on Amazon. Also according to camelx3.

Most likely the same body as this, aluminium lid plastic case elsewhere which is a shame, M.2 slot for SSD expansion so can keep the 1tb for storage

  • Not super slim, not ssd but cmon it's a really cheap price.

I dunno why they just don't go 120gb ssd (or even smaller) instead of a 1tb drive… It'd be nice to see manufacturers move on up.

    • by default most programs want to install on the c drive so non tech savvy customers would be calling tech support when they run out of space on 120gb ssd and have an empty 1tb spindle drive.

    • Because if they put SSD's in all computers, they do not have a reason to charge people less for certain models, and more for others. It's not always a simple matter of "I charge you more because it costs me more". I am sure that a 256GB SSD does not cost them much more than a 1TB HDD, but they need a reason to make some models cheaper and some more expensive.

I'll be upgrading mine to SSD myself, and will be cheaper off compared to buying one which already has SSD.

It says "in stock" now, no longer pre-order.
Let's hope they ship mine soon. Looking forward to a decent screen size without the bulk and weight, while paying a budget price.

Anyone know what Asus warranty is like on this machine if we buy off Amazon?

  • Reviews and feedback on Amazon show this drive does not support NVMe SSD's, only SATA3.
A photo implies it is M-keyed. I suppose a Samsung 850 Evo m.2 should work? So confusing, with different connectors, interfaces, etc.

    • I got mine in less than 3 business days. It is SATA III interface, i'm very nervous with trying my NVMe drive on this since it would be damaged. It is a very capable laptop PC, for <550USD w/ shipping, you can't go wrong. Upgraded to Kingston 32GB 2133MHz C13 + an M.2 WD Blue SATA SSD, it flies.
+ Plastic build, but 1.7kg (!!!), build is fairly solid,
+ Battery seems to be OKay 6hrs at max,
+ System Temp is in good control,
+ Screen does not have the widest colour gamut but accurate and pleasing, brightness is average, a bit bleeding but not too bad to damage your eyes, no flickering thanks god. Good matt coating, much impressed, feel happier even my Dell Ultrasharp.
+ BIOS is UEFI, has been trouggling getting the USB to boot for a fresh W10 install, but it's fine now.
      - I wish it has 60WHr battery since the chasis space can fit more than even 80WHr for real! Or at least fit dual fans and an MX150 :) and of course HDMI 2.0 out please!

      • Did you pay for expedited shipping? Mine is estimated for 6 Nov…

  • Anyone who's already received their laptop, could you possibly grab the model number of the RAM inside it? Looking to upgrade to 16gb RAM and want to get Dual Channel right.

Also, anyone got any great solutions for the US power brick? Looks like the prongs part slides off, hopefully can grab an Aussie connector (as I see it's already 240v).
