  • based on the Eneloop charger descriptions, it is a smart charger yeah?

    • It's not really "Smart", it just does the job. I think you have to look elsewhere for a smart charger.

As long as they are not timed I am happy

The packet does say "AUTO OFF TIMER CONTROL" on it, right below the charger itself, so I'd take a guess that it is a timer based charger. Don't hold me to that though, it's just a hunch.

However… This deal seems to back up the idea it's a timer system and likely to overcharge and cook your batteries.

    • it is a smart charger yeah?

Not a chance. The "10 hour charge" gives it away.

A smart charger will charge your batteries in 4 hours or less, any longer and the "-dV/dT" effect becomes so small that it's almost impossible to detect. Nitecore chargers are the only anomaly that I know of, they take twice as long, but use trickery (each battery is only being charged 50% of the time) to get around the 4-hour limitation (it takes almost eight hours for AA batteries).

Here's some technical reading for the background. With this charger, the charge rate is 0.14C.
"It is difficult, if not impossible, to slow charge a NiMH battery. At a C rate of 0.1C to 0.3C, the voltage and temperature profiles do not exhibit defined characteristics to trigger full-charge detection, and the charger must depend on a timer."

Is this a good deal to get started with Eneloops? Been wanting to get some for a while

    • If you need the charger it's a great deal. $4 per battery without the need for a charger is reasonable. If you have to pay for shipping the deal is less impressive then.

Though OzBargin has been charged lately by Ikea batteries, which are about $2 per battery and apparently near enough to Eneloop Pros to be worth the investment, so that may be a better route. You'll need to get yourself a charger from somewhere though.

      • or how about hobbyking lsd batteries…

  • Going from the comments from a previous deal- the charger sucks so it isn't worth buying the item.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong but $4 per battery is great, even without the charger?

    • +1

Yeah it seems not bad, I mean a 4 pack was $12.50 in this 50% off deal as a comparison = $3.13/battery. This deal $3.06/battery albeit for a much larger quantity, so I think $4/battery for 2 is still not bad without taking into account you get a charger.

    • Not really, standard price if buying eight AA eneloops from Amazon:
      https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JHKSN5I

Comes up at US$18.99 plus US$5.34 delivery (to a ParcelPoint location), total US$24.33.

Google currently says "24.33 US Dollar equals 31.17 Australian Dollar", so AU$3.90 each. Cheaper if you buy two packs, as the shipping price doesn't double.

And you'll have to use a good credit card, that doesn't charge extra for conversion fees and for overseas transactions.
